Lyrics
She's faced the hardest times, you could imagine
And many times her eyes fought back the tears
And when her youthful world, was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders
Bore the weight of all her fears
And a sorrow no one hears
Still rings in midnight silence, in her ears
Let her cry, for she's a lady (she's a lady)
Let her dream, for she's a child (child)
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild
And if by chance I should hold her (if by chance that I should hold her)
Let me hold her for a time (let me hold her for a time)
But if allowed just one possession
I would pick her from the garden, to be mine
(I would pick her from the garden, to be mine)
Be careful how you touch her, for she'll awaken
And sleep's the only freedom that she knows
And when you walk into her eyes, you won't believe
The way she's always paying
For a debt she never owes
And a silent wind still blows
That only she can hear and so she goes
Let her cry, for she's a lady
Let her dream, for she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild
Let her cry, for she's a lady (she's a lady)
Let her dream, for she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild
She's a flower growing wild
"Wildflower" was recorded in 1972 and released the same year on the 'Skylark' LP by The Canadian band Skylark. The title, "Wildflower", is not mentioned in the song. The closest line to the title occurs as the final line of the repeated chorus: "She's a free and gentle flower growing wild".
One of my top three favorite songs of all time!!🎶❤
Victoria Canada police officer Dave Richardson went to pick up his nurse girlfriend at her place and found her crying as she had two elderly patients had passed away on her shift. She went to shower and change and Dave watched some TV while waiting for her. After a while Dave went to check on her and found her asleep on her bed. He decided she needed the escape of sleep and went home and was inspired to write this poem about her. He was a friend of David Foster (future legendary producer) who was in a band with his then wife BJ Cook. Foster took the poem to his bandmates and guitarist Doug Edwards put the poem to music and the rest as they say is history.
Lead singer Donny Gerard went on to sing back-up vocals for Cher, Elton John, and many other legends although I think he had the chops to be a huge star himself.
1973 ,50 years ago and it still sounds so beauriful. What a great lead voice accompanied by such soft group harmony. When you talk about a song written to suit a voice, this is it. Great songwriting. The lead singer was Donnie Guerard, he just passed away.
Donnie Guerard and David Foster were in Skylark!!! Donnie didn't want stardom instead he sang backup in studios for decades!!! A Canadian treasure! He sang at a friend's after-hours club before Skylark!! He passed recently and he is missed here in Vancouver BC Canada! David Foster went on to stardom !
The music of my childhood! I’m 53 and the child of two music loving parents and they played this song a lot back then! Been on my playlists my whole life. Beautiful song that I’m now learning to play on guitar.
This song is my childhood. Sleep was my only freedom.
Me too❤ 57 here.
So glad somebody finally did this song ! Thank you for that ✌️
Congratulations, you have won the award for taking such a beautiful song and stepping all over it with your constant interruptions. Wait till the end then give your opinion
I have always loved this song and still listen to this. Velvety soulful voice! great reaction guys
I love this song. I actually searched for a reaction to it and found you guys!!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Great great song. Underrated all to hell!
My dear friend and neighbor. Rest Donny. You're sadly missed.
Great friend. Great man.
I read where a band member wrote this song for his wife who was a nurse and would come home crying some days after leaving the hospital because of the sorrow she witnessed and was unable to change.
Great reaction to this beautiful song - God bless ❤
Love the song and the way he sings.
Gosh! The faces in that thumbnail!! This is a great song!
❤️🔥 a perfect song
This song is so beautiful! His voice is amazing. They’re one-hit-wonder still popular today and more appreciated by new listeners. Of course, a big, big fan of David Foster and his magic through the years❤️
Great song. Brings back memories. And the guitar work, underrated! back in the 70's,I was the odd guy amongst my friends. All the guys loved led Zeppelin and then Van Halen. Van Halen was playing local backyard parties in my are back then. But me? The Eagles were my favorite band. Linda Ronstadt was my favorite female vocalist. That never changed. Dan Fogelberg was the best singer songwriter, ever,in my opinion. And a highly underrated guitar player. His lyrics are pure poetry, you don't even need the music! But his music, and arrangements, with all the instruments that he played, separate him from everyone else. I'm was a guitar player for years, and an audiophile, for over fifty years.
I love rock. Even hard rock and metal. But back then, this song stood out. So did the Isley Brothers, "Who's that lady". And later,I really got into Carlos Santana. Why? The guitar work was different, and exceptional. The vocals, and harmonies,to me,were just as important. And the smaller bands, that didn't get any promotion? They were also great, especially by todays standards. I'm talking about Firefall, Ambrosia, the Outlaws, Poco, and the R&B bands, like Earth Wind and Fire, War, the Commodores, Blood Sweat and Tears, Chicago! They were all out there at the same time. Yes,the 70's generation had it all! From Bob Dylan,The Beach Boys, the Jefferson Starship,Styx, and Queen, to Elton John, McCartney and Wings,Tom Petty,Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton, the Who,Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer,ELO,Journey, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones,Aerosmith,Heart, man,the list goes on and on.
So now, being the old grumpy man, telling the kids nowadays that they don't know what real music is, because their music is all processed,auto-tuned,ai written,etc.. it's not hard to prove my point now, is it?
Wow, it's been a long time since I've heard this song. I had bought the single back then. Spent hours listening, wrote the lyrics down so I could sing along.
Not a fan of ballads, but this is surely an exception for me. Great reaction guys.
one of my faves...eternal playlist!!

Smooth as a banana shake?
The music is outstanding, This guys voice is over the top. He should have been in the singing bissness for years. ?? What happened to this guy?
Donny Gerrard died in ‘22 but he remained in the business as a backup singer for many of the biggest names. He tried for a so,o career, but it never happened.
