Beautiful playing, Dr. Rachel. My choice is the Powell Venti headjoint over the/my Philharmonic cut headjoint. The venti will take all the air you give it. My wife and I call our Powells with the V-cuts the tubas because of the power they exude. It is interesting to hear the other brands and what other posters have noted.

All sound great, but I thought the Powell had a better overall sound.🤔

Out of that line up, M2 is the most open which gives you more on the sound and projection across the range. That is what it is cut is for. This means either it is too much of a headjoint for you or your concept of sound is not optimizing it. It sounds to me that once you stabilize yourself on the S4 (less square than the M2), there is a sweet quality to it. The Powell sounds diffused for some reason and Mancke also. Mancke sounds like Mancke, like any other open-sounding headjoint with a modern cut which I no longer care for going into NFA now because everyone all wants to sound like either Galway or Pahud. I like my own set up which is a 14kPowell & Sheridan.

On my poor computer speakers, I liked the Powell the best on the Widor, but the Mancke wailed on the Dvorak (in a good way. Of course, I can't really tell anything on these speakers. The Mancke definitely had an interesting sound. The Powell was a bit more refined on the Widor.

To my mind the Burkarts don't suit your way of playing. The Mancke hurts my ears but maybe it's my crappy phone speaker. I liked your refined sound on the Powell although they don't work for me at all. Nice comparison. Thank you.

Sounded great on all of them. Between the 2 burkarts, I thought the m2 had a slightly freer sound, where as the s4's sound was a little more confined sound, if that makes any sense. That being said, the mancke was my favorite.

Thank you for the feedback! They each have their own strengths, which is why we love carrying so many makes and models here at The Flute Gallery- there's something for everyone. The Mancke was a personal favorite, too!

I believe the Mancke’s pt riser also made a big difference in how much air the headjoint can take and be pushed against
