    I like your video style - clean, no forced smiles, no loud music - to the point.
    could add more frames in which you show the grinder and the things you like/dislike - with a demonstration. not just listen to you

    Seriously, I agree with you 100%. I have seen way too many under trained CAFE Baristas that make such poor quality coffee drinks. Home cafe is the way to go !

    I purchased my Ode a couple months ago. And my experiences are pretty much exactly the same. This is a brew grinder, nothing finer than pour-over is really practical. I use setting 3 for pour-over. However, if you don't need it for espresso or moka-pot, etc, the consistency and repeatability of the grind is truly exceptional. I use the coarsest setting for cold-brew (it goes to 11, which amuses my wife to no end.) This makes an excellent, smooth cold-brew.
    Is it a bit messy? Yes. But from what I've seen, no worse, and probably better than other machines that use an "open" design. Using the "drop of water" method is an absolute necessity in dry climates (I live in Arizona). I also take a damp paper towel and wipe the top of the grounds lid and the bottom of the grinder head just before grinding, which helps. And you need it for wiping down afterwards anyway.
    Honestly, the only two things I'd absolutely change, are the lid of the grounds container, and the feed hopper. As noted, the lid of the container is finicky and annoying. Having it sit just 2mm deeper into the container would fix it. The feed hopper just needs to be a couple degrees steeper in slope. I find myself having to push beans into the chute over 75% of the time.
    All of that said, I love the grinder, and would still choose it. I expect to be using it for many years.

    Hi @freshly brewed! I love your videos and was wondering if you are still making them?

    Definitely agreed with a lot of your gripes. I almost never grind with the top on, which I imagine makes it louder than they intended it to be. But if I don't I know a few beans will get missed. I think they intended for the grinds catch bin to be the dosing cup as well, but once or twice I've forgotten to put that back in before turning the machine on...what a mess! Also with you on the knocker and retention. I hit that thing like 6 times after grinding and then know I'll still have to hit it a couple times before grinding the next time. I like it, but I don't know that I would have liked it as much if I hadn't been able to get it at the Kickstarter Early Bird price. There was even a bit where I considered going back to my Baratza Encore. But when my first one developed a strange whine, they sent me a new one with no questions asked.

      Yes, it’s definitely an interesting product. I agree with you on the early bird pricing but I definitely like the taste coming from the side over the Encore so my Baratza just sits unused in the corner 😥

  • @Yirgamalabar

    Any idea how the Ode compares with the Baratza Virtuoso+ for pour-over? They're priced similarly, but the Baratza can grind finer I believe.

    Thanks for your review. Currently looking for a Christmas present for myself, and trying to make a decision between a Wilfa Svart and Fellow Ode. Usually I use a simple French press the most, looking forward to buy a Sage (or Breville, as it's called in the US) Precision Brewer. I stopped using my mokka pot (which was my favorite method) bc moving out to a place where I have an induction cookplate, not gas, as before, and didn't get around to buying that transition plate thingy yet.

    I'm definitely waiting for the updates to buy one. My encore is still working strong but way too loud in the mornings. I don't need to go any finer than for making coffee with an aeropress. At this price, it seems like a steal.

    • @BrianRenshaw
      @BrianRenshaw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. The Encore is definitely a lot louder

    Thanks for the great review. I really like that you've honestly laid out all of the good and bad after one year's use. However, I hate you for making this video as I've been perfectly happy with my Baratza Encore for the past year I've owned it...now I'm considering the Ode (just kidding about the 'hate' part). I also have a Timemore C2 on its way to my house (based partly on your review of the C2, I might add). It's amazing to see how fast the Ode grinds; I previously had no idea what a difference large burrs would make. Anyway, I may be looking for a coffee friend who wants to buy a used Encore in the next few months if Fellow comes out with version 2...

    • @BrianRenshaw
      @BrianRenshaw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the speed of the grinder is insane especially compared to the Encore! Like you said, I would wait until the new burrs come out. Encore will serve you well until then and you can wait in anticipation:)

    AV Comment: The bass on the background music is disgusting. The track must have not been monitored on speakers. By subwoofer and floor standing speakers rattled something awful & not in a good way. Rant over.

    I’ll be buying some of their burrs (not sure what version) and fitting them into my mazzer SJ. $45 vs $300, same grind quality, but cheaper. Maybe I’ll save up for an ode. Probably v2 if they release one .

    How would you compare the grind quality and how would you describe the taste of the Fellow Ode vs a Premium Hand Grinder like 1Zpresso?
    Is it really MUCH better?

    • @BrianRenshaw
      @BrianRenshaw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which 1ZPresso? Which brew method is predominate one?

    • @Ddiakova
      @Ddiakova 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d love to know too. I’m looking at the JX Pro for filter only. So I’m wandering as well how the JX pro compares to the Ode. Thanks! And a lovely video, really loved it!

    • @BrianRenshaw
      @BrianRenshaw  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ddiakova you’re getting close to the same quality in terms of consistency and taste. Obviously you’re paying more for the motor and other enhancements from being a electric grinder. I think at this point your choosing between other factors beyond quality.

    You could have done this entire video in less than 3 minutes. Very repetitive. Just filling time for that 10min mark. Be succinct.
