    We’ve been using em to ferment all our compost for the past three years. Sealed in barrels. We then mix it with 70% woodchips for three weeks. It takes about 4-6 weeks for the whole process. We then topdress our raised beds and apply IMO 4 and liquid IMO. BOOM !!!! I’ve never seen better results.

    Wow, you're blowing my mind right now, I'm a pretty lazy Gardener 🤣 I've been listening to all these people talk about em 🤔for such a long time, I thought to myself why not yogurt and kimchi, sauerkraut, when those things expire ,I just put them in my garden, not the yogurt directly, but just the watery bits that come off the top before I throw it away, I usually add a lot of water to it, and I noticed a difference in certain areas where I had bought fertilizer, thank you so much matt, I love hearing everything you have to say, you're doing such a great job at getting all this information out, thank you so much for everything you do ❤️💃

    Relating to the human gut discussion around 11:00; A good tip I learned during some of my travels around, eat the local yogurt. It will absolutely help your stomach adjust to the local food.

    There is such a need for citizen scientists. Sign me up. I do love EM, lately been getting more into the brix readings, foliar feeding to increase that. I know how to use the microscope but quantifying the microbes are a challenge to me. I need to find the formulas again. I took Elaine's FC in 2020, so I have a decent foundation. I love going deep into these rabbit holes, keeps life interesting and uncovering these truths are mind blowing.
    Its amazing how much the human microbiome correlates to soil microbiome. We are from the soil.

    Matt on a more serious note: how to apply microbes to vegetables from the supermarket as to remove bad chemicals before we eat them?

      I don't know, but I'm guessing the bad stuff is inside the food as well as on the outside. I'm probably wrong, I usually am lol. But that's my guess.

    I highly recommend looking into nutritional balancing/mineral balancing as it was created by dr Paul Eck. Saved my gut. But EM did wonders, too! IMO bacteria is part of the story. The other parts are light, water, magnetism, but most of all mineral BALANCE and interactions. Look into ionomics, ionic mimicry with heavy metals, etc as it was discovered in soil science by William Albrecht. It’s all tied together! All the best

    I am completely lost in all that I learn about composting, EM and now in what I discovered through the techniques of JADAM (JMS, JLF).
    Dr. Elaine Ingham stresses the absolute necessity of making aerobic compost and also the importance of aerobics in the preparation of oxygenated compost tea. All this to obtain good microorganisms.
    However, with EM and fermented forest litter, we make anaerobic preparations (EM1, bokashi, etc.).
    JADAM JMS is a kind of anaerobic compost tea, JLF is a fermentation of a set of plants that are left to ferment for months in water anaerobically.
    Yet these anaerobic preparations also produce good microorganisms to inoculate the soil and feed the plants.
    I confess that I no longer understand anything.

      I did DNA testing on Elaine's star students and their compost ALWAYS contains the EM microbes. All Elaine's Compost ALWAYS Had the EM microbes in it: th-cam.com/video/vD5ebuyEaHk/w-d-xo.html

    Also acetobacter destroys glyphosate! At least Stephanie Seneff says that. Acetobacter is also in vinegar and kombucha. For a few years i lived in a place which was very heavily contaminated with glyphosate, including the well water (i found out about it only after having already lived there a couple of years and been very very sick). Soon after moving to that place I started to brew kombucha and drank it like a liter (a quarter) per day.. and i think it greatly contributed in my survival out of that situation 😲 i love beneficial bacteria 😏

    Hi my friend I started a journey into microbes over 12 months when I was told I never smoked real trichomes in my life I realised we are just upside down plants a vessel for microbes i watched a coulpe of Elaine's videos I felt connected to her somehow it wasn't untill I passed some clones of a invassive pine tree to a friend that I come home and the tree told me thank you for passing me on Elaine gave me to your father i felt crazy but done my research and investigations and realised she was actually here in Townsville at that time at JCU and did know my father it's crazy to me that a tree told that and it was right

    Great information! How do I make this EM myself and making sure that the LAB, PNSB and Yeast are added in the right ratios?

      The term EM is a trademarked term for their product, so I just want to point that out to distinguish the difference.

    Hi Matt, would you have any info or knowledge if EM has been effective in rice paddies (Asian region) which would require anaerobic microbes than aerobic (I am a newbie about the subject and I assume that rice crops are usually submerged in water most of the time and the soil has to be mud). I have also come across some info about "bokashi balls" (which will have EM), to supposedly clean bodies of water and hence, I am now thinking that EM will be effective as an alternative fertilizer (in place of expensive chemical fertilizers) for poor rice farmers.

    We are with you 1000% Matt Powers! I am so happy and proud that you have met your goal already, but I say we keep it going! Everything Matt says in the above video is true, we really can change the world for the better and improve the health of ourselves and others, through the soil. The soil is the linchpin!     YA know Matt, you DO have something there about foods from other regions. I now know, that foods that are grown in one country and brought to the US doesn't sit well with my gut. Especially the oils. Yet, I can get exact same products from another country and they don't bother me at all!

    Outstanding info, Matt. IMHO we should be applying Acromobacter (spelling correct?) on every square inch of soil possible if it breaks down glyphosate.... glyphosate is in our rain water and snow fall now. Meaning it has contaminated our entire water cycle....and Acromobacter could be a holistic way to reverse that ?! That's huge.....and wonderful.

    This is interesting stuff, but it is pushing me even further and further into believing that “EM” is about as unhelpful of a term as “friendly microbes.” It’s not even something that is semi-coherent as a community to me like a “scoby” it just seems more like an industry generic name for any arbitrary selection of the minority of endemic active microbes we are capable of identifying. And really, if they’re so endemic to all environments then why does anyone need to inoculate with them if they aren’t in thoroughly abused soil?

      I believe it actually is a brand name technically, or at least it's meaning is specific to the mix of microbes it contains.

      @@johngrunwald3029 yeah and that’s the problem as i see it: plenty of people believe EM is a very specialized selection hand-curated by a groundbreaking researcher and then by commercial operations, and then on the other hand lots of people say or hear “EM” and imagine the common LAB production with no spirulina or other additives, and here now I’m not sure why Matt is using it to talk about seemingly everything endemic that we have not specifically identified as a pathogen and that has some potentially beneficial impacts under the right conditions.

      @@johngrunwald3029 100% it's a trademarked brand name - that's why it's important to highlight the microbes at work in it and Regenerative Soil, the book, goes over how to make your own DIY biofertilizer mixes, but everyone is using EM and knows the term, but it's just a term for these microbes AND they're in all high quality compost, so it's really available to everyone at all times.

      There's soil consortiums that express dominance as the IMOs and simply consume the EM because the soil environment outside their preferred pH/Eh range. Mapping out all of this hasn't happened yet - that's why the database is so critical. I'd LOVE to DNA test all the native soils of all the major bioregions where folks are growing food right now. That would be UNREAL, BUT it doesn't exist yet. Soon though ;) with this database, we'll unlock a flood of information!!

    That mimosa is susceptible to fusarium fungus also but I believe there is a bacteria also . The Latin on it had 4 words species name with the last being aureus by why don’t I write things down and quit relying on memory ? Anyways , fusarium isn’t good to have around for sure in a nursery . I can tell you an easy fix I’ve found though for damping off of new seedlings . Works within the days length for me on maple seedlings . If they look droopy and sick and are leaning over , mix 1 tablespoon of h2o2 to a gallon of distilled water and mist the seedlings lightly . They stand back up and usually don’t give any more trouble when in that critical stage and only seed leaves .

The list starting with The Farm Lab, Denver Soil Consulting etc. When i tried to google these Companies I was unsuccessful? I find that a little concerning? Not sure what is going on? Not one of them came up? Do you think they are being blocked somehow?

    We have an invasive , foreign invasive tree that is susceptible to a bacteria I’m gonna go look up again now . I think the thought of using biology to wipe out an invasive species is much better than laying waste to everything with a dangerous herbicide any day . This plant I’m referring to is in the bean family and was introduced here from Japan many call a mimosa tree . They make Beans , live and die fast but spread everywhere . I’d like to use the wood for compost . A non native pioneer species that I’d love to meet its demise here because it has the ability to take over like Chinese privet or Chinese tallow trees . Thanks for your videos Matt . I learn more and more every day.

    Matt, you are so inspiring! I'm pinging right now with excitement... this is great. I'm a fan of EM insomuch as, I believe, it can lure people into connecting more with the soil and their body. To live a probiotic life :) I'd be interested to know about milk kefir too, did you know that apparently the grains cannot be re-created by mixing the individual species of microbes together. Have you done a vid or planning one on KNF and the sequencing?

    I'm drinking my EM's too and somehow since I started with I have the feeling that I'm less hungry. Hard to explain, but I have the feeling my body is using my food more effectively and getting more of it. Moreover a nice side effect: Your poop doesn't smell bad anymore :D

    Matt, how does the human consumption EM compare to the many microbes found in milk kefir? Wouldn't mk be a much less expensive option, and also a lot fresher with a guarantee of all microbes being alive? Or is there something specific in this product that has health benefits that differ from the milk kefir microbes?

      Kefir whey is what I use, it's a clear whey as opposed to a yellow from milk

      Water kefir looks a bit similar - smaller yeast size, but I need to still sequence them. I was looking at it yesterday.

      @@ThePermacultureStudent - water kefir is similar, but less microbial action. Even milk intolerant folk can usually consume MK, especially if introduced slowly. It's a great healer. Can't wait to hear the results. I use MK whey to spray for leaf mildew. The residue from rinsing out the MK jars goes in the compost or directly around plants. Can't wait to hear your results from sequencing both. :)

    Hey Matt, very interesting. Thank you. In regard to the TeraGanix label claim that it is straight LAB, Eric Lancaster seems to have claimed more than that, back in Dec. of 2017. Perhaps I'm reading more into his words than I should.
    On the Soil King TH-cam Channel, a video entitled: "Soil King Showcase Season 1 Episode #9 ( EM1 & TeraGanix)", it features Eric Lancaster, TeraGanix VP (at the time). From 4:36 to 8:36 of that video, he explains what EM-1 is, according to TeraGanix.
    At the 5:30 point, he denies TeraGanix EM-1 is nothing more than "straight Lactobacillus;" with nothing else in it. He says, clearly: "It's a mixture of groups of microbes," "not just a straight Lactobacillus product. It's got a lot of lactic acid bacteria in it; but also has photosynthetic bacteria, and yeast in it, which not only provide enzymes and amino acids, but also help the plant to uptake" (... those plus minerals more efficiently). Did you ever run tests on it? Or is that legally "forbidden", as reverse engineering a patented product? I have no legal knowledge there.
    At the 8:32 point, Lancaster says that "all the microbes in EM-1 are on the FDA GRAS List," implying it's not just LAB; but more to his contextual point, that they, (not it,) could be used in (human) food," technically; which he backs up by drinking a shot of it, LIVE on set.
    If I may ask a basic question, please: Is LAB facultative? If there is photosynthetic bacteria in there as well, would they be facultative as well? Are all the strains in the other bottle, for human consumption, facultative? None that are aerobic?
    Is straight LAB alone able to wipe out a WhiteFly infestation? That's what TeraGanix claims and that it makes a great foliar spray, not as a "pesticide", but as an metabolic bio-stimulant of immunity & nutrient density, making it more resistant to pests.

      I work with Teraganix now as an affiliate and like those folks a ton. I do DNA testing with the most accurate methods currently available - the Oxford Nanopore Technology. Of course there was more than LAB in there BUT it's guaranteed to have LAB on the bottle and on the label - that's Teraganix's label, but that means it does not necessarily have PNSB aka rhodopseudomonas palustris which is an expensive ingredient and a key component in the effects of EM. That's why I recommend EM-PRO as it is guaranteed to have PNSB. I tested EM-1 and found 12 counts out of 10,000 of PNSB - that's effectively nothing, but that doesn't mean it isn't effective. As we learn more about Stem cells, we learn their secretions are what actually heals the other cells - they don't become anything, SO the generations of EM-3 etc. into EM-1 contain all the history of the microbiology in the solution. This aspect is something that only has occurred to me in the past month and I haven't even shared it with Teraganix yet - but it has to be a factor. SO, I love them. Their products are AWESOME. I do DNA testing and microscopy work extensively on EM and the biofertilizers in it individually. I create my own biofertilizer with a much higher level of PNSB than even EM-PRO but I buy pure cultures of that and add it in as well as water kefir for a huge diversity of LAB. Teraganix products rock but they are made for you - I experiment and study, so I take things apart and combine new things and in new ratios to study them. My work is about creating clarity in this space. That's why I test so much and share so much.

      Seems like two different types. The purpose of making compost tea is to encourage aerobic microbes whereas the EM 1 seems to boost anaerobic ones. If you added EM1 to the bucket that you are brewing your compost tea in I think the aerobic microbes would overwhelm the anaerobic ones.
      Better to add them both to the soil.

    I am curious as to whether a literal shot of compost tea could supplement missing gut biology if simply drank? Obviously, eating food grown with good compost is ideal but what of a more direct method?.

      PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT - compost is NOT for the gut. I've DNA sequenced it. We want what plants pick and choose to embody for the most part - there are somethings in excess that can accumulate that don't hurt plants but hurts us but that's hyper specific like aluminum in some plants.

      Have you read the tests of what happens to EM over time? I've DNA tested in the soil and in the extensions and the IMOs crawl into the extensions and push out the original EM members and establish their own ecology ;) So, I have some data on that and I'm collecting more.     Great video, Matt. Would sour dough starter be a good source of EM? I've already got a bunch of that and it sounds like the culturing process for EM (from rice water) is sort of similar. I'm sure the ratios of the various microbes are different but I imagine they're mostly all still represented...?

      Lactobacillus, comes from milk or cabbage fermentation. Ferment milk for a week, discard solids, separate the clear liquid aka LAB. The saccharomyces and the purple and cyanobacteria will typically come once you anaerobically ferment biowaste with the LAB.

      As a related aside, I have successfully made bokashi using sourdough starter diluted into some water, drizzled over each new addition of food waste into the bucket. I mixed a bit of sourdough starter and water for each new food waste addition.

As a newbie, I have a quick question.... would brewers yeast be present in spent brewers grain? Would this in theory be an easy method of beginning Bokashi? Would Bokashi Composting in theory maximize yeast presence?

      This in the form of LAB + additives is the starter of typical Bokashi product. Bokashi will not maximize yeast. You will get multiplicity of microbes. If you smell it, it typically will not be ethanol, but a strong mix of acetic, propionic and butyric.
