    FYI: The overhead for SFO's trackless trolleys is not catenary, it's direct-suspended. The only place I've seen catenary for trackless trolleys is Russia (the good 'ol CCCP).

    Why does it have to be in the middle of the road?
    My city uses similar system to hook up the poles on the wire, but they're usually set up on the stations, where the trolleybus can stop without blocking the traffic and "hookup" while taking passengers.

    If it's off the wire, how does it drive away? Stored power? Anyway, what a contraption. Have no idea why SF still has trolley buses. Maybe because it's SF.

    • @m0istl0la97
      @m0istl0la97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SF has trolleybuses so they can have "Cero emissions goal by 2035 or 2040"
      Plus trolleybuses can easily climb steep hills of SF better then gas buses.
      Also yes the trolleybus has a small 20 minute battery if its discharged

    • @jamesrobinson8768
      @jamesrobinson8768  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      These buses are new. And are rated for 15 years, but will probably live beyond their expiration date. The 40-foot trolley-buses will have the steepest highs to climb, and the most strain, so I'm not expecting them to have a longer lifespan. Trolley buses usually last 20-25 years versus 15-20 years for diesels. Because they are more rare than diesels, trolley buses cost more but last longer. There are also fewer makers of trolley buses (although they are just buses with electric propulsion rather than diesel).

    • @dand7422
      @dand7422 ปีที่แล้ว

      in my country operating a diesel bus is 95 or 90 rubels while trolleybus is just 15 rubels trolleybus in my country has been since 1950s or 1960s
