While DMC 2 is still being negatively received, I feel Lucia was a welcome addition to the series who many fans, including myself, would like to see more of. She's sefless, heroic, and likeable.

I hope they remake it someday, confirm Dante's attitude in the game is due to his loss of purpose, and keep the characters but expand the dialogue and bring the combat to proper modern DMC standards.
I think erasing it is also a bad idea, we should elevate it so that it can be loved like the rest.

I understand DMC 2 was originally set to be the final chapter, but that got retconned after DMC 5 came out. Thinking about it now, I say 2 can still be placed at the end, if only because Dante was the only character to be seen again. Yeah, I know that would mean Vergil, Trish, Lady, and Nero and his friends never came back after 5, or after the 2008 anime... But, I think it works.

  • @blaarfengaar

  • @duwanggang5931
    @duwanggang5931 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

It's also worth noting that during the time period DMC2 takes place, not only had Dante 'supposedly' killed Vergil for good, but he'd finally achieved what he set out to do years prior, Avenge his mother. Achieving your life's ambition must leave you pretty directionless afterwards. Add this to the fact that Trish had left him and gone solo during this time period as shown in the anime. It makes perfect sense for Dante to feel pretty depressed. I like to think him becoming a pseudo-mentor figure to lucia managed to pull him out of his funk and encouraged him to reconnect with Lady and Trish.

I think dmc2 deserves a remake. There is so much potential especially with how it fits into the current timeline. It'd be a chance for them to actually finish the game and give it depth. The development of dmc2 was rough. We dont even know who the original director is. It really needed better staff and more time in the oven.
The setting is really unique compared to the other games with it mostly being gothic and dark cityscapes. I think the RE engine could make it look amazing.
Why remake a game thats already perfect when you can give a lackluster game a second chance?

Things I love about Devil May Cry 2. Im not starting in one place, going to a new place, then going back to the first place. It started costumes that can all be on one file. Dont have to start all over again. If you put in the Super Mode cheat the drawback was no regenerative health. Started Bloody Palace. Started Chapter Select. Where Devil May Cry 1 started changing devil arms mid game, Devil May Cry 2 started changing guns mid game. Started shooting in two different directions. Could shoot rain like. Created the Majin/Sin Devil Trigger mode.

I think DMC2 had a lot of good things going for it! it was the first game to give you very different DT transformations, it gave us a great female character who was also playable and I wish they'd bring her back, and I really like Dante's look in the game.
I think what held it back was Capcom being super weird about how they handled sequels to their new IPs at the time. Both DMC and Onimusha got sequels that were completely different from their first games, because they were given to totally different development teams. Not to mention DMC2's original director leaving the project partway through. Its honestly pretty impressive that DMC2 turned out to be any good at all.

I never bought into the hate for this game, the only way I found out about it's quality was due to playing it myself, my conclusion since it's that the game was mostly disappointingly boring gameplay-wise, but as usual with hate bandwagons, people started overreacting towards it's lacking qualities, it also added up the revelation about it's development hell, a common thing I see tbh, when people get to know something is unfinished they seem to always use it as a negative regardless of the final product's quality, like it happened with MGSV, I think it's a shame that the ammount of effort the artistic team put in this game always goes underappreciated

It was revealed that Agnus from DMC4 used to work for the Ouroboros corporation. There has been multiple statements in the DMC lore that Demonic power corrupts humans weather it is in the presence of demons, demonic items like the devil arms etc. Arius was able to harness demonic energy and use it very well. He was able to summon a demon powerful enough to push mid game DMC2 Dante into going devil trigger (That is mostly a power scaling thing that I'm not gonna try to write an essay explaining that here. Plus Arius' company could've provided the world the means to be able to fight demons.

I'm gonna go out on a limb about this game. I think the hate is kind of unjustified. Now, before anyone tries to rip me to pieces for saying that, here's why I think the hate comes off as completely unjustified: I'm not saying the game is perfect, no game is, ever, but the way I see it, the hate people seem to have for DMC 2 is basically them saying this: "This is trash because we don't like it. If it's good enough for us, it's good enough for you." I know that sounds so oddly specific, but fanbases can work on some real bullshit logic that just sounds better in their heads.
Saying a game is bad because you don't like it isn't good enough, and there are sadly a lot of good, or at least decent games, that fall into that same category a lot. I won't name them here, because that's not the point I'm trying to make. Point is, fanbases have really weird mindsets when it comes to games in franchises that are considered 'black sheeps'. Sometimes, opinions will be too embellished for me to believe them.
Edit: Something I forgot to bring up, Dante is a bit more lax and less chipper in the 2008 anime as well, which takes place in between DMCs 1 and 2, so blame that if you don't like how Dante is portrayed in 2.

I will say, I think Devil May Cry 2 has the best aesthetics in the series. That's purely subjective of course, but I just can't get enough of its style that's like a cross between an old school anime and the cover art of a metal album. It's so over the top edgy that it actually comes off as very comedic, like you just know someone had a blast drawing everything. It's like an 8th grade boy's notebook doodles were turned into a video game, and I daresay I don't think I've seen any other game quite like it.

There were so many things I appreciated about this game, from Dante's downer and quieter personality after going through what he just experienced with Vergil.
The enemy designs aesthetic wise were really amazing and well thought through. They really looked Demonic and otherworldly. I honestly prefer DMC 1 and 2's enemy designs to DMC 3's(despite DMC 3 enemies working better in gameplay)
Also, the gothic style was toned down from DMC 3 onwards in my opinion. You could take almost any level from DMC 2 and it wouldn't be out of place in a horror game.
I also like the story, characters, and the little twist at the end with the coin flip still shows Dante is cocky, but true to his character.
Finally, I'm glad they kept the theme going on through all these games of "all this crazy sh*t going on, and it's just another Thursday for Dante".
This game wasn't the best, but what it did well, it went all out.
(PS. DMC 2 might just have the best Dante outfit in my opinion)

You make it sound like it was planned character development lmao. It's inconsistency. The team that made dmc2 didnt know the character at all, and really anything that made the first game great. Creator Kamiya didnt even know they were making a sequel until they had already begun development, they just didnt tell him. Thankfully Capcom realized dmc2 was a mess in the making and brought in Inafune to try and salvage the wreckage. Dmc2 was already ruined but Inafune managed to turn it around with dmc3 onward.

Call it objectively bad if you want, I still had an objectively fun time playing it. The art was cool, the music was cooler, the battle system I personally forgive on the basis that it did what sequels are supposed to do and give you a new experience while holding onto a familiar formula, that's more than some other game franchises can say. I'll admit it should have stayed in development a little longer before being rushed out, but I liked the ideas it had. The final boss was kinda lame though, but I liked some of their boss ideas leading to it. Like seriously, when was the last time you fought a skyscraper demon? People tend to forget that it was kind of a dry year for games with only a few good ones like Tony Hawk's Underground, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, ect. Most of them were lame sequels and sports games, so this was a welcome reprieve for me back then.
That said, I'll take off the rose tinted glasses for a minute and say it was definitely rushed and admittedly was a weaker game in the series compared to later games. But that's kind of the point. You gotta mess up a few times to figure out what works. Plus, the story itself was kind of playing on the safe side, making it pretty dull near the end. So yeah, even after all those nice things I said, it still needs a proper reboot with a few adjustments to basically everything. Adjustments being the keyword.

I appreciate you making this video essay about Devil May Cry 2. I love the vibe of that game even if the combat is very repetitive and the main antagonist descends into Saturday Morning Cartoon absurdity.
I love the smooth animations and motion capture of Dante in it. And the Instruction Manuals Details about the history, culture and lore of the place that we were going to in Devil May Cry 2 was incredibly fascinating and interesting to me.
I also realized how depressed Dante was and detached from life he is post DMC1. Especially with how he chooses to remain in the Demon World at the end of the story.
But one thing that really bothers me about the Japanese culture and mentality behind the Devil May Cry franchise is how undeniable pro Feudalism it all is.
In the prequel and the sequel, human men who seek to become more than human are presented as being awful and terrible people who are supposedly defying the natural order of creation by seeking to surpassed nature’s imposed limitations upon them.
But the half-breeds of human and demon are the only ones in the right, supposedly. This reeks of “Gatekeepers Mentality” does it not?!
And then Nero is born. The grandson of Sparda. And the franchise ends with this one bloodline of Sparda being the supreme bloodline.
If that’s not racist af, what is?!

All the legitimate 1234 revealed the history and lore of the series.
Each game realed more about the legendary dark knight Sparda
Whos tale was wrapped in a vale of mystery.
Throughout each game what he done over the past millennia is solved through Dante and Nero's adventures. While in the reboot Sparda is nothing but a gimp. In DmC2:DMC5 the bait and switch feels disconnected and contradicts what was established before. It's what you get when you make a new world from the amalgamation of two drastically different universes.
That hack itsuno loved the reboot and wanted to do a sequel but to his dismay couldn't because it flopped as it should.
So here we are with a lackluster tale that shrink and confine the world to a brotherly conflict when that was never the case to begin with.
Instead choosing to deny use all of what could have been a great expansion to the word of Devil May Cry.
DMC 1 Dante's the end of his quest for vengeance, DMC 2 was Lucia's story, DMC 3 was the beginning of Dante's story, and DMC 4 was Nero's story.
DMC "5" is a mess an amalgamation.
Bayonetta 1 in my eye is more DMC5 than that crap. As the true successor from the create of the original creator of DMC.
Itsuno ruin what could have been a grand finally Dante's inforno level story an yet he chose to leave by cutting a fart. That's how I'll remember him as a big fart as we all should. Goodbye big fart.

@MilestheDirtyMindedGoblin2099 The childhood rivalry concluded with Dante defeating Vergil after his self-realization as a son of Sparda.
He started off with "I don't have a father" to "We are sons of Sparda".
Fulfilling his duty as the sole protector and carrier to his father legacy.
He got his retribution after defeating Mundus the demon king responsible for killing his mother and brother. DMC 3>1 is Dante journey while the other games aren't his story he's just along for the ride.
DMC5:DmC2 isn't a sequel more of a contradiction and retread.

This was a great video. On paper, it seems DMC 2 had something going for it, the art and writing team evidently put in genuine effort. The technical side is where the game fell, mostly due to a rushed schedule, and because of that, the art and writing didn't get to be fully realized. It's still a bad game, but it's nice to see that they at least tried with that they had, instead of the rushed cash-grab many think it is.

Gosh! The gameplay of DMC2 is such an interesting subject though? Because it's a huge precursor to later games!
DMC2 gave us the moves that eventually became the Trickster and Gunslinger style. (Jumping into the air and then shooting your guns downward. Or standing on the ground and shooting each gun in a different direction. Using the spare face button as a dedicated improved dodge roll over the standard lock and and press jump while holding sideways. Running up and along walls for increased mobility.)
And DMC2 gave us a powered up Devil Trigger form, with its own special attacks and abilities. Some of which are strangely similar to the Sin Devil Trigger abilities seen in DMCV!
I know that all of these abilities are underdeveloped, and the game is badly balanced around them, badly balanced even to the point where many players just did not know that some of these moves even existed in the game! But it's clear that these ideas were the basis for what eventually became core to later games in the series.
I don't know if I want to see DMC2 get a remake though. Can it even be remade? Do you keep Dante depressed or make him fun again? What does that mean for the wider fiction? How much can or should the gameplay be revised? Would Dante keep his Majin Devil Trigger? What does THAT mean for the fiction? I changed my mind. I'd love to see a remake of this game, because then that would mean lots of new discussion about where or even if it fits into the series. My favourite theory has always been that DMC2 is an offshoot timeline where Vergil never had a son and never escaped hell, so Dante is completely alone and has nothing left but to go to hell! I'd love to see what would happen to that theory if we got a remake.

  • @saltyshrimppasta
    @saltyshrimppasta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

My biggest issues with DMC2 are thus:
1.) The combat is weak, but mostly because it’s too easy. Most bosses can be burned down with the Devil Trigger, but even when you don’t use it, you can ultimately just shoot them to death from a safe distance. The bosses don’t really test your reflexes, except for Argosax (God what a stupid name). The dedicate dodge roll and default air combos are welcome, and DmC would take these even further years later. It was also the first game to introduce Dante’s sword “Rebellion,” the concept of an end-game boss rush that every other game in the mainline series repeated, and they changed Yellow Orbs to be resurrections instead of mandatory consumables to reload a checkpoint instead of retrying the mission.
2.) The camera is somehow worse than DMC1, which is an achievement. There’s the one boss fight on Dante’s story against Bolverk where the camera feels like it was designed to keep him out of frame.
3.) There’s a serious lack of direction that the other games don’t really have. The scale of the areas is unnecessary and makes it too easy to get lost, especially since some doors require a button prompt to progress, but an overwhelming majority do not, making it hard to know if you’re missing something to progress.
My headcanon is that Dante was extremely Jetlagged from the trip over and the plane only had decaf, so his change in character is because he’s too tired to give a shit about anything.

Well it actually tried stuff such as making dodging easier thus you dont suffer from dumb camera angles, made a sick outfit for dante and and a sweet customizable devil trigger with an additional majin form, it introduced the rebellion for the first time, introduced moves such as double jump, bullet rain and shooting each weapon to different directions, made weapon and gun switching a lot more easier, it also had different sword combos as well(but they forgot to add a tutorial for each of em for whatever reason), wanted try something different by making dante serious just this once so yeah it wasnt really bad when you look at this way. However we cant ignore some facts such as bad story, difficulty being too easy, huge vast areas where you run for a couple minutes doing nothing, fucked up with how op guns were when they actually tried to make him as powerful as how they were cannonically shown in cutscenes, chopper boss fight and stupid minions like tanks and etc. If they fix these problems, maybe remove a couple boss fights, add new enemies, fix the story difficulty and how weapons work ı m pretty sure ıt ll be one heck of a remake just like re4

Devil May Cry 2 has some interesting ideas and themes.
Sadly the gameplay and presentation are holding it back. It is, as you said, unfinished.
Lucia is by far the best element of this game.
I like her human and devil trigger form and I'd love to see her in either a remake (like Resident Evil 2 and 3) or have her back in Devil May Cry 6.
Maybe she will even appear in the new animated series. She deserves at least that.
Also something I just realized watching your video: Dante has white hair, and red and black clothing; Lucia has red hair, and white and black clothing
Since you mentioned the DmC Reboot (in text only), I would be interested to hear your opinion of the Reboot.
While I understand why fans disliked the story and the characters in that game, we have to remember that the Dante in that game is essentially a pre-DMC3 Dante (in an alternative universe).
The Vergil's Downfall DLC started with Vergil dying from his wound from his fight with Dante, and ends with him being strong enough to kill all his inner demons which in his mind hold him back, and the armies of hell kneeling to him.
This DLC really sets up a DmC 2 which in my opinion could have had some elements of DMC3.
I still think it's possible for DmC 2 to happen, even with Ninja Theory being part of Microsoft now. I'm sure they wouldn't have an issue with the game even being released on PlayStation.
Since multiple games from Microsoft already are on PlayStation and Microsoft even said that they will keep releasing games from the Blizzard acquisition on PlayStation.
And I think the DmC and DMC games are different enough for both to co-exist.

I strongly dislike DMC2, but I also dislike that whenever the new games want to reference the series's past they only really go to DMC1 or DMC3, and *maybe* DMC4 when Nero's involved. DMC2's story is a potential wellspring of inspiration with the right eyes even if the game play is painfully boring, and I'd love to see Lucia come back.

Finally someone defense this part of DMC. And it is my FAVORITE! I played all parts and a lot of times!
This part has much more improvements from first one than depravations.
    And here is improvements:
    - much more quality fighting system. Because you actually always can avoid/dodge attacks. Yes, first one is a bit more difficulty but more unfinished, because it is pretty bad when you cant avoid attacks. In this part it is really worked out good. Yes, because of that it is a bit simplified, but it is high quality.
    - improvements in movement system. run on walls, dodge in any direction is very good stuff. And guys, the reason why 4th part doesn't have that in Nero is most likely because you reported that dmc 2 is bad, so we loose a lot of good mechanics from that part. This part is really close to souls like games, and it is times of PS2.
    - devil trigger is much better. You don't waste huge part of it during activation, it is wasted much less when you only walk, and it consumes more on attacks. Also flying system much better, you can change position vertically, what is really good too.
    and deprevation:
    - the only one for now I can say, and this is little bit less variation of attacks then in others. But lets be honest, first one has not much more attacks too and everyone loves that part 😁

U could just avoid attacks by jumping in dmc1, whoch was enough. Also, a downgrade is that instead of improving on the consistent delay combos from dmc1, they decided to add this weird directional combo system that really didn’t work as well. The balancing is also awful, compared to the first game. The guns are almost always the best options. The weapons are also a downgrade. Dmc1 had 3 swords, 4 if u count yamato but that’s omly if u play with LDK costume, but atleast it had ifrit. Dmc2 has just swords. Also, instead of unlocking moves throughout the game with red orbs, that has been replaced with a generic and worse level up system. Oh yeah and the level design is worse aswell. Instead of the tightly crafted levels from the first game, most of the levels in dmc2 are these big empty forgettable spaces. The enemy design is shit aswell. They are super passive and are just so unfun to fight against. Oh yeah and the attacks just feel worse. The animations are worse and much slower (expecially stinger, what the hell did they do to you). The only positives are the devil trigger and without dmc2, we wouldn’t have dmc3, dmc4, DmC and dmc5.

@@B1g_B0sssss with some of your arguments I agree, like some maps are a bit boring.
About jumping I remember that in dmc1 I wasn't able to do that, but maybe I'l try again.
Anyway, my main thought is that this part is little bit blamed to much. Like there are things for what you can like it.
For me its exciting fights, great graphics and easy gameplay. dmc4, 5 & remake better for me, but this one is smthing unique.

@@tematoscybersage5626 the easy gameplay is one of the reasons this game was hated. Also, exciting fights? U mean the bosses? They suck ass.

@@B1g_B0sssss how to say, they looked cinematically for me.
It was easy for me too, but I am hoping that in next difficulties it will be more challenging. But I anyway looking at it positively, it is part for me, in which I can just chill and relax.
anyway, it is pretty subjective and depending on taste. But for me, as a fan of dmc 3, 4, 5 & remake it is pretty cool part. Also I like souls like games.

I played part of one of these games as a toddler, it was the one with the mannequin spider looking things & those weird gibbety corpse enemies, whichever one that was. It was quite fun.

DMC 2 and the reboot had the opposite problem
DMC 2 had everything right except the gameplay
DmC had everything wrong except for the gameplay
Also, even as a kid with no knowledge of these themes, I remember walking away from DMC2 with some understanding that this was an older, more tired Dante who had surpassed Sparda, so, it got the jist of it's narrative across to an 8 year old fairly well.

Yeah no, this video didn’t really convince the viewer that DMC2 is good, rather it just reinforces what everyone already knew about DMC2: A game with wasted potential that had no direction for most of its development until the very last stretch where it was rushed to be something playable.
