The advanced tutorial has you put Magos contrast all over but it is diluted with the contrast medium so it acts more like a wash than straight contrast.
I used a can of wraithbone to prime. These are beginners sets so aimed at people new to the hobby, that don't want to buy absolutely everything to find out they don't like it after all. Basically you should be able to do the job using just what's in the box. But a few optional extras sure do help.

You know, until I opened the box and looked at them it never really stuck how small they really are.

Funny they didn’t reply to this one. Buy some primer.
Usually I stick with priming it wrathbone spray can
Is that not what you're doing by basecoating the whole model?
