    Thank you for the presentation. That was excellent. I’m taller and longer arms than most in our 6 man. Sometimes in a race we stroke at such a fast pace that I feel like I am at times shortening my stroke or arm paddling to keep in synch. Does it make sense to use a shorter paddle to offset this issue? Thank you!

    • @K2NOPS
      @K2NOPS 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @brettfaryniarz581 yes that can help. Reducing the distance from pinky to blade top. Adjusting the stroke to reach less and or exit sooner other variables to throw in for sync.

    I did KW last year in an OC6. 12 miles felt like forever! I can't imagine doing it in big washing machine chop on a prone board. I almost quite Nish last year (I can't remember if you were at that one) because it was so rough at the outermost marker that I hulied due to breaking wave that flipped my boat over ama. But I remounted and limped home!

      @philsch6192 both at the same is most time efficient and smoothest... but having the more stability savvy person go first, then keep their legs out to stabilize is an option... or the opposite where the less savvy person goes first and the second person holds the boat or assists there as needed. Any system can work with a plan and knowing the pros and cons of each.

    [ 7:00 ] Those two drills really seem to help in building muscle memory for hip rotation ( let's call it 'hip drive' -- though some might call it 'leg drive': it's subtle, but the legs do a fair bit of work in transferring power to the canoe ). The impact, during the ensuing regular stroke, is quite dramatic, in terms of movement fluidity and pull quality. I am convinced. 🙂 P.S. It wish we had a side view, instead of the rear 3/4 view, which is a bit less helpful for demonstrating technique ( with a gooseneck holder? ) -- kind of like that Tahitian slow-mo huti roa: th-cam.com/video/4jWLfXpkyCo/w-d-xo.html

    I've never heard of the "ice pick" analogy. Poor analogy because I'd think it would lead to a lot of arm pulling instead of driving the paddle down as in the "pole vault" analogy.

    • @K2NOPS
      @K2NOPS หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Lehmann108 that's another good point! It's flawed in a lot of ways... the only concept is bringing the vessel to the blade which admittedly is hard to conceptualize for a true first timer! I say it's from the "old school" since I heard the tip in around 2012 before getting into paddling and filling into a corporate dboat team

    Really appreciate how you explain the breakdown of the entire stroke. I’m learning to surfski,unfortunately on an old pro level boat so I fall constantly, but when I’m able to stay up and paddle I’m going to try and utilize this info. I’ve got some rotation but def not enough due to boat balance.

      If its too tippy you are in the wrong boat, When people buy a boat that is more for experienced people and think it will just take time to learn. Wrong by doing that you develop bad habits and you probably won’t be able to paddle it correctly which means your balance will still throw you off

  • @namolokaman2393
    @namolokaman2393 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interesting. So, the reason paddlers progress faster in a one-man is essentially because of feedback being unmuddled? From personal experience, it is indeed much easier to _feel_ the use and benefit of various stroke types in a one-man-especially with a speedometer-and crucially _when_ and in which water conditions to apply them: from short and fast, mostly front-powered strokes ( huti pe'e ) to get the canoe out-of-the-hole and planing, to longer, typically slower, more seat-centered strokes ( huti roa ) for maintaining acquired glide and velocity. For example, two days ago, I was wondering what might the benefit of a mostly aft-powered stroke ( which I dubbed 'Huti Roa-Type 3' )-a stroke I saw K. Jerusalemy use in his v1, in a video recently-and discovered empirically it is a good stroke for going upwind, into swell and chop, because it makes the bow lighter, while saving energy. In team paddling, however, individual performance can be harder to isolate because of the need to sync with others, which can mask personal inefficiencies or strengths. This can slow down the learning process since paddlers have less direct control and may not feel the nuances of their technique as clearly. P.S. We should also mention that in a six-man-or more-paddlers are supposed to match the stroke rate, and _style,_ of the stroker, but, if you are in 5th position, you are doing a copy of a copy ( note: #2 is copying #1 ). So, that introduces an additional layer of 'signal degradation', making it even harder _to feel_ what you are doing, beneficially or not. Not so in a one-man.

But GoPros before GoPro 5 and after GoPro 11 do not have GPS. Here is my low-tech, cheap solution: a $15 CYCPLUS GPS speedometer-ordered directly from China- which I mount directly onto the dry hull, near or above the pedals ( depending on cockpit configuration ), with... *blue poster tack!* I have hulied a bunch of times, including in breaking waves, and have yet to lose it. Notes: To fully waterproof it, I use some of the poster tack to cover up the charging port flap and side button. This device does not have strokes-per-minutes, but it does gives me: the current speed in mph, time elapsed since it was turned on and in motion, and the maximum + average speed reached. I find it quite valuable in testing different strokes for the conditions, as well as a sanity check to confirm I am _actually making progress_ when going upwind in the ocean ( sometimes, one wonders ☺)!

    One aspect not fully addressed is paddle length. I was watching a YT video recently about MARERE, a Tahitian paddle manufacturer ( one of Shell Va'a's suppliers ), in which they indicated that off-season _training_ paddles are a bit longer. I presume this is to maximize pull ( 'huti' ), and aerobic training. Also, Tahitian clubs known for favoring specific stroke types ( i.e. high-tempo over longer, slower strokes ), have paddles to match. Personally, having a longer pull, I tend to deliberately pick the high range in terms of weight ( wood ), paddle length and blade surface area during the training season, and switch to lighter (carbon fiber ), slightly shorter paddles ( like 1" to 1.5" shorter ) with a bit smaller blades for races. Another point is that older, typically squarer, OC blades require precise water entry to avoid the dreaded 'kaplunk' cavitation sound. In contrast, newer teardrop-shaped blades-which have become standard-are more forgiving, allowing greater leniency in form ( which may or may not be a good thing! ☺).

    • @K2NOPS
      @K2NOPS หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TLeaky-v1p no it doesn't drag unless your exit is poor. Regardless of where you hold it you can drag the boat with a bad exit. Choking up and burying deeper is more leverage! But if you can't handle the leverage then you'll go slower. If you watch the latest blog video on OC training you'll see my hand chokes up a lot and the boat speed wouldn't be where it is if the blade was dragging.
