I was at this show with my girlfriend at the time who is now my wife. We were 22 years old and we took a train from Pittsburgh to New York to see Whitney at MSG. We didn’t even have a plan on how we were getting back home. We didn’t care, we just wanted to see Whitney at her only US show in 1988. As I watch this video and hear her voice I vividly remember how awesome she sounded as her enormous voice soared throughout MSG. She was so incredibly beautiful in person that I have yet to see a photo that accurately captured her beauty. For her encore I Wanna Dance With Somebody, she changed into jeans and danced around that stage with so much energy. I can still remember that big beautiful smile that filled the place and captivated you just as equally as her talent. I guess her beauty was part of her talent because you never got the feeling that she was trying to be beautiful or sexy. She just was.
This was the second of at least ten times that I saw her. The last being at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State University in July 1999. Every time that I saw her live was a different experience because her performances were always indicative of how she was feeling. That was part of her genius. She gave you herself and she was always great. Thank you for posting this video. It is a reminder of what true talent really looks like.

WOWWW I love this story! I really wish I was around during that time especially late 80s Whitney because I’ve always heard that the videos doesn’t even remotely capture the sheer power and beauty of her voice live

@@michaelhouston3709 Saw her at the Sand’s in Atlantic City in the 90s. The shows were only about 800 people. I saw her 3 times in the same week in 93 and 3 times in the same week in 94. I was nervous in 93 because she had just done 5 shows prior in New York at Radio City Music Hall but she blew through the Sands like a tornado every show. She changed up the set list each show and masterfully sang the songs differently each time. Totally a pro. In 93 she was in the tabloids around that time for being overweight because she had Bobbi Kris a few months earlier and the diet pill mess over Janet Jackson. We sat at a table in the front row and I have to say although she was a little heavier than I had seen her prior she was absolutely stunning up close. She was one beautiful women and her voice was unbelievably powerful. I took some photos that night but they took me back stage and confiscated my camera but I managed to keep a roll with a few shots. My wife and I stayed at the Sands and were able to meet Whitney, Robyn and Bobby. I waited for hours for Whitney to come out. They finally brought her out through the kitchen. She did have a room in the hotel and her people were all around throughout the week. My wife ran in to Cissy in the restaurant and she came and got me to talk to her. She was incredibly nice and she took her clean linen napkin and signed it for me but oddly enough she signed it Cissi Houston. Robyn was very pretty and seems so kind. My wife talked to Bobby and he was surprisingly cool. Nice memories of laying on the beach and seeing Whitney Houston. I also saw her father in the casino but he was unapproachable. He had people around him that wasn’t having any interference. Bobby was in the casino just casually gambling but when Whitney came down they closed off the area. Just a little insight to how special this lady is. I love music and a lot of other female artists that I am very familiar with. NOBODY comes close in my opinion.

People need to understand how hard that should of been for Whitney Sitting down.
The abdominal wall (or the abs) need to relax when we breathe in. Sitting down makes that difficult. As a result, we cannot take quick and deep breaths. There are times when sitting down to sing is unavoidable.
This is just another example that proves Whitney was unstoppable.

Just another reason she was a superhuman singer. She was well educated on physical stance and posture (like an opera singer) when it came to singing. Singers we think of as 'great' and "Whitney-like' (Mariah) are absolutely not. Whitney sang with her entire body. No one else did (or does) do that. Watch the remaster of Who Do You Love from WHH. When she does the opening "WHOOOOOOO" she is holding her mouth in a very precise way to get that sound no one else could get. And don't get me started on melisma or I'll be here all night. After Whitney came Mariah who taught an entire generation of singers who to DO IT WRONG. Only Whitney could (make it seem) effortlessly use that technique.
