FINALLY I can add Phil Ochs "Changes" to my play list . There' an F#m to Bm smack in the middle of every verse.. a beautiful song with a tough chord change.
Thank you so very much! This was super easy and now I can get through a ton of different songs without bashing my head into the wall because of that godforsaken bar chord! That worked out perfectly! Thank you so much!
There are other chords that can help get away from the open / first position chords. Try out some chord inversions played up the neck for a little variety.
Instead of the 4-3-2 fingering for F#m7, it seems to me it would be better to use 3-2-1, so that you can slide your (fatter) 3rd finger a bit towards the B string to mute it, since it is not part of a F#m chord.
I know this video was five years ago, but I'm wondering about your finger choices for the f#m - its such an easy transition between E major and f#m if you just use your second finger on the D string and 3rd finger on the G string and wrap your thumb up top for the E string. For me, I'm all about quick and easy transitions. But you may be used to playing finger twister like that and more advanced than me. Either way thanks for the shortcut and video!
Thanks for a great lesson! I can't barre, not because I'm lazy, but because my fingers are old and messed up. Now I have more tools in my guitar toolbox!
Hello ! thanks for your video, i'm trying to play a song from a singer named NNEKA, "your request" and it sounds Bm7 , but what she does on her guitar is not just a chord maybe .. i'm learning guitar and i realy like to know what she's doing with her right hand , if you could maybe listen and tell i'm desperate to learn this song ! thank you !
Hi Mauret, her first chord is Bm7: images.app.goo.gl/p6e3RRB9sK6yoAzW9 and then she changes to F#7: images.app.goo.gl/Ngx6hQ8cpckTB3cH6. She also plays G7 in the chorus which is just like the F#7 but up one fret. Hope that helps!
Ha, glad it helped! Also, remember .. for every hardcore guitarist who judges your manliness, there are 100 others who will recognize your awesomeness!
Hey Karen, for the Bm chord you can pick / pluck every string except the 6th string (Low E). For the F#m chord you can pick / pluck every string except the 5th string (A). Hope that helps!
Hey , you're doing great thanks for sharing 👍 Can you make tutorials about Barre chords too and please make playlists on your channel , it's easier to find exact content
Hey, unfortunately you can't use it for other 6 string minor chords. It's unique because of the open strings we're using (which happen to work with the F#m in this case).
I totaly disagree, Bm and Bm7 both have their place ln music, but not as an alternative for one another, try starting "Hotel California" off in Bm7, you'd get laughed off the stage.
It sounds like you’ve been playing for a bit, Paul? This substitute is mostly for beginners who struggle playing bar chords. Definitely not a bad thing if bar chords are easier for you 👍
Guitar Coaching Online - Yep. I understand the bar chord being more difficult from a strength stand point. But the dexterity for the version you mentioned is perplexing. I’d jump to the 7th fret and play it there if I was looking for a simple version.
Right on - yeah, the 7th fret version is a nice one, too. When I'm working with beginners I usually start with the open position chords, but that variation (7th fret Bm7) is a great one to learn - especially once they're comfortable moving around the fretboard. Thanks for your feedback.
Thanks for your feedback, James. We’ll have to agree to disagree :) I find the difference to be very minimal and use it all the time as a performer. Just my opinion, though.

So great to hear that! It’s no fun playing your favorite song and having to skip a bunch of chords. Glad this helped!
I'm left handed and it's hard for me to play the bar chords, I'm so happy that I learn something new and easy
Awesome! I'm glad to hear that. Keep strumming!
So I am not the only one with this problem

Funny I was needing an alternate to these two chords in a song that's on my must play list. Talk about timing. Thanks brother!
Thanks so much! I really look forward to trying this on tunes I’ve been skipping.

Thanks, the Bm7 is just what I needed.

Hey, I'll definitely work on that. I need to give my TH-cam channel the love it deserves :) Thanks for your suggestions!
Can I use this technics for any 6th string minor chords or just for the f# minor ?

For and even easier Bm7 - make a regular B7 and simply lift your index finger.
thanks for uncomplicating these chords for my learning ...nice Duncan Africa by the way...love them
Awesome, glad you found it helpful. Hey - and thanks, I love my Duncan Africa guitar!
Your head like guitar head
it’d be nice if you said the number of the string too-
Great suggestion! Thanks for the feedback, Peri.
I can’t see which strings your even playing ☹️

Use a capo!
I actually find your Bm7 more difficult to play than the standard Bm7. 🤷🏻♂️

Bm7 and Bm AREN'T "interchangeable" ...very different sound
