I learned to play the barre F in the summer holidays 1965. It was slow, painful and the best move I EVER made. Anyone struggling, really try to stick with it. It really IS worth the effort. Bear in mind too, your guitar's action needs to be reasonable, if it's too high the pain and difficulty are magnified. Last hint. To learn to place your fingers correctly takes oodles of practice so consider down-tuning the strings a couple of semitones so the E becomes a D and so on. This reduces the tension and makes the fretting easier, also it improves confidence, the more confident you become, the better the result. One last comment, there's a TH-cam of Eric Clapton playing and discussing his 000-28EC and he makes a truism - the better quality the instrument, the easier it is to play. Took me 40 years to buy the best instrument I could reasonably afford and my playing has improved immeasurably. Good luck . . . thank you Tony.

Takes time and practice them every day no matter how bad it sounds. You'll get there. I used to give up every week. Took me about 9 months to get decent at barre chords. A little bit every day.
Sometimes it really just depends on the guitar quality as well. I had a 160$ Spanish guitar for a while and here and there I would get buzzing (and I've been playing for 7 years). Now there was this one time I tried a really expensive guitar and it sounded like magic.
I had been playing (mediocrely, I grant you) for about 5 years before I ever even *heard* of Barre chords. Having been playing for a bit first might have made it slightly easier, but it still took some time and practice. Just keep going! And I know that a year later, now, you've probably conquered them, but a little extra encouragement never hurt, right?
I want to thank you for the tip about pulling the body of the guitar toward you with the strumming arm. I tried that and immediately I went from having a muted string or two to playing the f barre chord clearly. This is a major milestone in my guitar playing. So simple yet so profound advise.
I've struggled with barre chords for years, and just assumed I wasn't built to play them. Literally 2 minutes in to this video and I've played a clean F chord. This guy is absolutely amazing!
What just happened? A few years ago i stopped trying to learn how to play the guitar, because the Barre chords were too hard for me and hurt my fingers. My teacher told me to just keep practicing but I had other stuff in mind (video games, girls etc.). I just saw how you used the index fingers SIDE to press down all the strings. I was using the flat palm side of the index finger. Tried using the side and now it's completely fine... Why didn't my teacher tell me to turn my finger a bit? It makes so much sense...
I love your tip about playing partial barre chords because it encourages players to keep going and practicing even if it's not perfect. It shows even as a beginner you can modify so the chords still sound nice and that's the kind of thing that keeps new players playing consistently. That in between when things just sound bad is hard, and I think that's when a lot of people give up.
Tip: An F position on the 1st fret (where the F chord actually is) also has wider frets and a stronger resistance from the strings (Ever tried to do a bend on a 1st or 2nd fret?).One could try the same F position on higher frets which are narrower and where the strings feel a bit 'looser'. 100% is a way around barre chords...just use your thumb to barre the bass note, and you can hit every note of the F chord without having to do the full finger barre, only need to barre the high B and E with that index, simple I dont understand why people dont do this.

I've been playing for a year or so, and I can tell you something guys: Barre chords are not the worst thing in the world. It takes a lot of practice and real effort, but with enough patience you'll handle them. Don't let something "simple" like this stop your musical learning, this is the best thing in the world. Good luck. Thanks for this videos, Tony, they're helpful.
Using the outside, boney part of the finger. 1:30 seconds into the video. This is a great tip. Takes getting used to, but you will do it naturally with a little practice.
I can't do that finger roll ever since I broke my wrist. Lost mobility forever :/ Really saddening cause my bar chords come out plucky when I try doing them quickly.

I can finally continue on my guitar journey after almost giving up.

I’ve been playing guitar for around five years and really struggled with barre chords with getting them one day and doing the same thing the next and the high strings being muted. These tips seem very obvious to me now and have gotten me into the swing of barre now. Very helpful for people who are only just playing guitar and find barre in their music sheets.

Okay that whole push pull with the guitar definitely gives the extra lil push I need to make those bottom notes solid. My wrist still hates me but we’re working on that
This was great, been searching for "natural major scale guitar" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Vonizabeth Strumming Magnitude - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got cool success with it.
Beginner guitarist here and that piece about applying your picking forearm to the body to apply pressure to help your index finger is pure gold! I've been watching videos for while and no one has mentioned that part. Thanks!
Yeah, the finger roll is priceless and new to me (after 45 years of guitar playing.) Down the road any tips on anxiety reduction with regard to bar chords might be nice - I find that while daydreaming on the couch I form them in a timely, almost effortless manner - but when I think about them (e.g., anticipate a transition while recording or performing) too much, they start sounding raunchy. Thanks again!
I’m relativity new to guitar but could relate to your over thinking some chord or thing your trying to do it and then Stress to me is the ultimate killer of guitar playing!,! ,When I try really hard and get stressed/ mad I absolutely cannot play whatever I’m working on So what I actually realized is if you are getting frustrated and stressed and over thinking it just let it go and come back to it ... another little tip is Wine will help way more than a Redbull Guitar is not something you can Power through , you must Relax and enjoy it Even if you have to practice over and over try ending on a positive note never in frustration and if your frustrated with what your working on stop and learn a new Riff or piece of a song that inspires you and makes you feel good and Happy then end on that cause you will want to pick it up again 👍🎸🤔😍🎸🎤
Your very first tip set me free !!! 😄 I was playing the bar on the meaty part and getting the same results you described...SMH. THANKS Tony, way to go! I’m brand new to guitar..about 2 months now. Progress but I’m trying to find somewhere to land in a routine. Again..Way to go!!!
What helped me the most was thumb placement. A fellow guitarist saw I had the meat of my thumb way up high on the neck. He instructed me to move my thumb down to the middle of the neck. That tip helped me to squeeze the neck properly and get clear sounding barre and "grand barre" chords. The "grand barre" is what I call using just the ring finger to bar the D, G and B strings. It gives you even more chords to bar up and down the neck.
I have the shape for major and minor barre chords memorized, with 6 string and 4 string variations. I can platy them and sound out all strings, but I struggle with prolonged playing (espcially with making demos more recently). One of the best tips I heard that helped me get comfortable with getting comfortable and having the strength for all strings is getting into position, strumming a few times to ensure good sound, then taking your hand completely off the fret board and relaxing, even shaking your hand out. Make no mistake, you'll need to practice with some regularity and over a few different sessions to really get comfortable. When your hand gets a little tired, take a break and try to find another chord in that shape or a minor variation (this helps learn the fretboard too). Find the next chord, rinse and repeat. I'm still building up hand strength myself, but I learned my bar chords in about 2 weeks of focused practice! Keep up the good work and you'll be ready to play any song in no time, and unlock a lot more options for strumming and muting string with all your fingers!
Very helpful for us new players out there. Been playing for 7 months, can make Barr chords sound clean but can't get them done quickly. Someday maybe.... Great vid...please keep it up
Though I can't duplicate what you are doing yet, understanding the importance of doing it is very valuable. You explain things with a lot of clarity and thanks.
Just played my first Barre chord using the tip where you pull the guitar closer to you with your other arm. Such simple advice, yet extremely effective. I cant thank you enough.
Thank you for the F bar chord tip. That F has always giving me problems. Never thought to use the bone sideof my finger. Now I feel like a bone head LOL
Hey, dumb question. When you barre, the finger should press on all the strings or just 1? For example, the f. Is barring the low E with his fingertip or is his finger pressing all 6 strings? I'm a few months in...
Hey, have you tried to ONLY fret the low E, H and high E string with the barring finger? Since the other three strings are already being fretted with the other fingers, it helps to focus the strength on the strings that need fretting with the pointer finger
First try placing the index finger and make sure it sounds well then place the other fingers in the respective frets.. Practise about 15 min for 8 to 10 days and you're ready to play the barre chord (That's exactly what i did)
O my word! I haven't been able to make a bar chord since I first tried playing (20 years ago) and your tip about pushing the body with the elbow worked! I feel like the neck is about to snap off but all the string rang out clear as anything! I'm gobsmacked, thanks!

Barre chords are the worst thing in the world.
The bit about using the side of the finger helped SO much!
Your finger roll technique is something that I will be practicing the rest of my days. Thanks Tony.
Finger roll technique!? I don't see one
Using the outside, boney part of the finger. 1:30 seconds into the video. This is a great tip. Takes getting used to, but you will do it naturally with a little practice.
Sounded like he was talking about a roll picking pattern.
I can't do that finger roll ever since I broke my wrist. Lost mobility forever :/ Really saddening cause my bar chords come out plucky when I try doing them quickly.
My bar chords come out plucky when i try to do them slowly too : ) Keep working on them. Sorry to hear about the injury, my friend. Hopefully you get some of that mobility back. Maybe not all of it, but just enough.
I have my wife push down on the barre and I do the rest. Easy Barre Chord. I am simpler than you.
Mason Barker What a supportive wife.

2 steps to perfect BARRE chord: 1. you will need to have wife 2. ask her nicely
Using the side of the index finger rather than the ‘meaty part’ has made a huge difference! It opens up the pinky and ring fingers to fret properly
This is by far the BEST guitar tutorial I have ever seen and I know now, how to play barre chords without getting frustrated. Thank you!!! 😁
thank youuuu i'm 1 month of playing the guitar i've been practicing basic chords yesterday i tried barre chords, earlier. started playing barre chords i'm not good at it but i made progress
Can I just say, i’ve been stuck on bar chords for months now, been playing for about a year (self taught) but always just avoided them, then tonight i decided to sit down and try them and whilst watching your video something just clicked and now I am definitely on the way to mastering it 😂 They sound so clean!!! Thank you so much, you’ve thoroughly earned a sub today :)))
(2) I've been playing for 3 yrs and still couldn't sound the bar chords right;-;
hows your bar chord now its been 1 year?? update??
@@derry9755 Very consistent! I haven’t been playing as much as I’d have liked to but I’m happy with my progress!
@@maxw2132 and what about now? :)

"F" is the T-Rex of chords.
Thank you so much Tony! I have looked at so many videos on barre chords, but they all would go straight into moving chord shapes. This is the first video to actually help me improve my technique and actually play a barre chord. I still can't believe I just played one without much buzzing or muffling. I can finally continue on my guitar journey after almost giving up.
Wow the picking arm clamp technique got the bottom strings ringing! Really helpful thanks
Makes the strings play sharp be careful dont use too much pressure. 🎸🎸😎
Leo Ivanovic yessir!!! I feel like I can now teach
playing guitar for 5 years and I never really understood what I'm doing wrong and why they aren't sounding good. Searching for tutorials, everyone just says "lol this is what a bar is" while you actually show how to play that stuff efficiently. Thank you very much.
after 20 years of (inconsistent) struggling with barre chords, your 'pull back with the strumming arm' trip is finally letting me make some progress. Thanks
When I pull the guitar back with my elbow really helps. Thanks a lot.
Played my first true barre chord because of this video, I wasn’t moving my index high enough. Thank you so much god bless
What s terrific tip....great work mate,,, I've just got use of my left arm again....after not being able to use it much for the last two years....combo of a fall and cancer...but with your tips,,,I am actually getting somewhere....as I retrain my arm and fingers....so THANK YOU ....Dave in Australia
Good on ya Dave. Hope its all still going well for you guitar wise and the BIG C. Hi from up here in NQ.
Okay that whole push pull with the guitar definitely gives the extra lil push I need to make those bottom notes solid. My wrist still hates me but we’re working on that
That second one really helped me so I just want to say thanks!
Never even considered using the "bone" of the finger lol! Life changing. I appreciate you and your beard of wisdom.
shared your video to my friends! awesome tips!

Thanks!
Just don't do it too much, you'll bent the neck back and that raises the pitch just a bit.
Who else just struggle and cramped there whole wrist and just had a breakdown
😃👈😤😣
how do you not do that :))
It hurts so much 😭😭
Him: I want you to rotate your index finger to use the bone-y part of it… Me: HOW? *cries in cramp*
Hello carpel tunnel. 🙃
Nobody told me to use the side(ish) of my finger when barring after hearing this from you I can bar 10x better thanks!
Dale Gentile i still can't do it
The b string is muted every time
I can't even get the side of my finger down, well I can but then I can't use the rest of my fingers. I guess it doesn't work for everyone.
skankhunt420 I think this is amazing, some strings still get muted, but it’s much easier!
Literally came here struggling so hard to play the f barre chord and then after this I can actually kind of play it !!! Thank you SO much
Yeah, the finger roll is priceless and new to me (after 45 years of guitar playing.) Down the road any tips on anxiety reduction with regard to bar chords might be nice - I find that while daydreaming on the couch I form them in a timely, almost effortless manner - but when I think about them (e.g., anticipate a transition while recording or performing) too much, they start sounding raunchy.
I like the sound of this guitar, it's very mellow.
The pulling the guitar in with the picking arm tip is gold!
gonna buy my guitar so I can start practice and follow this steps.
I'm still struggling because of my inexperience and lack of finger strength, but this definitely did help a ton!
Try thumb bar chords it's a lot easier for some people
Oh I see now
Let me just...

This guy is such a good teacher.
UTTERLY AMAZING TIPS...ESPECIALLY THE PART WITH THE BONE PART OF THE FINGER.........!!THANK YOU !!!!
Tony! Thanks so much, just the first tip helped me so much. Im out to practice these even more.
Thank you for being approachable and explaining everything so calmly. Definitely helped me!
Very helpful for us new players out there.
Been playing for 7 months, can make Barr chords sound clean but can't get them done quickly. Someday maybe....
Great vid...please keep it up
Ken P keep practising and DONT GIVE UP like I did. You have to work through that plateau.
Though I can't duplicate what you are doing yet, understanding the importance of doing it is very valuable. You explain things with a lot of clarity and thanks.
Good tips. Specially the “pull/push” one
As a beginner, I loved this video.
Just played my first Barre chord using the tip where you pull the guitar closer to you with your other arm. Such simple advice, yet extremely effective. I cant thank you enough.
Amazing tutorial. Really hit the spot at what a total beginner like me struggles with.
Pulling with left hand instead of just pinching was a revelation for my barre chords
Thank you, an excellent explanation on barre chord structure. I'm 81 years old and struggle but I feel confident this lesson will help.

I feel kinda dumb for not realizing all these things lol... you’re a life saver, dude
the amount of songs you just allowed me to be able to play.. thank you bro . thank you .
Thank you for the F bar chord tip. That F has always giving me problems. Never thought to use the bone sideof my finger. Now I feel like a bone head LOL
Same here. It's frustrating
These tips work well for strumming but it still sounds muted when I try to finger pick the B & high E string :(
Hey, dumb question.
@@natureinthecitymusic H?
@@tymartin2293 he’s probably got all six strings, but listen to the full lesson . . . you can do a partial chord.
@@glorioskiola thank you!! I have a friend who I hadn't talk to in a while that will teach me. But yes, I got frustrated and didn't finish the video.
Your first tip has already helped so much with that dreaded F. Thank you for what you do!
Also brining the guitar neck up into a more classical guitar position helps me to fret guitar chords.
i'm left handed but am playing a right handed guitar. i can't even imagine how hard it'll be for me to have my non dominant hand on the fretboard.
Same but it’s kind of just muscle memory when I firs picked up a guitar I never really struggled due to me being left handed
Then why not play a left-handed guitar instead?
@@violetsky5202 i had to make use of what was around since i didnt want my parents to buy a new guitar.
The "push pull thingy" is BRILLIANT...thanks...I'm practicing...
I have big fingers, but my fingers aren't that flexible
First try placing the index finger and make sure it sounds well then place the other fingers in the respective frets..
Practise about 15 min for 8 to 10 days and you're ready to play the barre chord
(That's exactly what i did)
I feel like barre chords really are the gate keeper and you made them a little easier.
Thank you
you gained +1 subs from me . Thanks for this!
5:32 Hi, I'm Saul Goodman.
O my word! I haven't been able to make a bar chord since I first tried playing (20 years ago) and your tip about pushing the body with the elbow worked! I feel like the neck is about to snap off but all the string rang out clear as anything! I'm gobsmacked, thanks!
I was applying so much of force on the guitar that my thumb bone is crying now..😂
I think the key to guitar greatness is in the BEARD!!! We need beard to play guitar to his level.
I would, but I'm a woman and am not able to become a bearded lady. That would be kind of cool though. I mean, I guess if us girls took testosterone hormones or something we could get that epic beard.
@@infinitesprings
Then buy a beard wig and play your way to become the next big guitar hero hehehe just kidding... i guess playing guitar really is not for everybody. I play the guitar since 1996 but i cannot qualify myself as the best. I'm still in a beginner's level category.
