My fave scene is when Maximus & Juba are on the roof of the north African compound where they're held following ab arena fight & they talk of their coming afterlife. Juba says if he dies his wives & kids won't follow him for many years. Maximus says his wife & son are already waiting for him, & he's ready to join them there. Juba nods, it is good that you will join them, but not yet! And he smiles. They laugh together quietly. Powerful scene. His love for his wife & son is the center of his existence. His work now in the arena is to honor his promise to Marcus Aurelius.

One of my all time favourite movies! May not be brilliantly accurate by any historical terms, but everything about it, from cast to score to cinematography was sublime!
That's what was great about old movies they didn't have to be historically accurate because we just wanted to be entertained.. lol... nowadays everybody wants documentary level accuracy when movies are made.
@@blitzwarzone342I can’t say I agree that new movies would be more historically accurate. Modern movies tend to be worse, because too much green screen, special effects, lack of good dialogue, lack of interest to properly introduce characters that we care about.
Everything about this movie is world class. Story, acting, directing, editing, costume, score, sound design... They could literally have stored it for over 20 years and release it today and I would've been equally impressed! Timeless classic! 🤩

The single greatest line in the history of the motion picture industry !! Only thing that comes close is Tombstone, where Wyatt goes to see his dying friend, Doc Holiday in Colorado. The dialogue between Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, powerful stuff.
The writers of these lines captured the purity and intensity of Maximus anger...perfectly...and it terrified Comodus...the best lines delivered, the best way...in any film I have ever seen.
As a historian this movie was so awesome and entertaining I didn’t have to try and entertain myself by picking apart the inaccuracies. A good story doesn’t let you concern yourself with the asinine
The fact he uses his shield for both offense and defence is what sets this apart for most fights in my opinion. Its such a small detail but makes all the difference.

This movie was Crowe at his Zenith...it had to be a lot of work and training to do this film...never mind it doesn't follow history very well...Ceasar saying Comodus was "not a moral man".....oh boy, some inventive writing there..but well acted by Richard Harris. My fav movie, fav actor. Lost count of how many times I've seen this: "what we do in life echoes an eternity." Yes it does. Choose wisely. Eternity waits for everyone ready or not. Choose God.
In reality professional gladiators rarely fought to the death as it cost a lot of money to train them. The signal to kill was thumb up not down. The Romans had female gladiators. A professional gladiator earned as much for one fight as a legionare earned in a year. The professional gladiators were the premier league sport stars of their time. One last thing weapons were often blunted to minimise serious injury.
Not usual for gladiators to fight to the death as they were expensive to train and keep. Dignitaries would often arrange a gladitorial fight in order to entertain/impress their guests. If they wanted a death then a lot more money needed to change hands in order to compensate the owner for the loss.
You obviously didn't see him in Master and Commander, a film about a Napoleonic War British Navy ship hunting and being hunted by French ships. It's better for the history than Gladiator, and the sea battles are gritty and realistic, and Crowe played that role brilliantly too. It really should have got a equal. Not beloved as Gladiator, but just as good IMO. Check it out.
