For years I thought Leonidas went over board for kicking dude in the chest into the pit, but when dude told him to "choose his next words carefully, they could be his last" nah dude was disrespectful first.
Agreed. It was a message, but it was an ultimatum. Leonidas chose to send a strong a message back, and was ultimately killed for what he stood for. He knew that moment was a deciding factor, which is why in the movie he checked with his Queen first to ensure it wasn't just his emotions taking over. He looked around at the people he knew would be involved in a massive war if he sent that message.
@@ashasrumman4935 oh yes I probably should have mentioned that I am not referring to the actual history. Just how awesome a character he is in this movie.

This was the Classical age of Greek civilization. United Greek armies defeated the Persians. After that Spartians and Atinas started to fight each other to claim all Greece peninsula. And ironically Spartians needed to help from Persians. Although Spartians were the stronger site with this help, both side started to weak during the battle. And finally Macedonia appeared strongly and brought an order to the peninsula. This was the begining of Helenistic age of Greek civilization and first appearance of Alexandre before history.
This is not a fairy tale like pirates of the Caribbean or the mummy or troy, this is history not exactly how it happened but still real history, the whole west should be grateful to these people that we live today free in democracy.
It is honestly about as realistic as most of those films, from the depiction of Spartans (heavy armoured infantry who lost wars as often as they won), to the composition of the army (less than ten percent Spartan with others doing the bulk of the fighting and 3-4 helot slaves for each Spartan), to Leonidas (who was a 60 year old and wasn't fighting on the front line) to the cause of the war (the Greeks funding rebels and bandits in Persian territory). It's a *superb* cinematic film but aside from "there was a battle at a place called Thermopylae" (which also means hot springs not hot gates and there were no cliffs) its basically bollocks.
That's the actual inscription on the monument of Leonidas in modern day Thermopylae. "Ὦ ξεῖν’, ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε κείμεθα, τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι", which means: "Stranger, tell Spartans that we lay here, staying faithful to Sparta’s laws."
Salutations to Xerxes, the king of kings, who made the Greeks polite forever. According to Napoleon Bonaparte, the pride of the Greeks is not to be crushed under the hands and feet of the Persian army
Just realized how the narrative of “center of culture europe” vs „the barbaric east“ is depicted perfectly here. The achaemenians were a pretty far developed state at this time, but is shown as barbaric and less developed, while enslaving all their people. Sparta used alot of slaves too, comparing the insane wealth of the persians with the small hellenic city state. I know its just a movie and all, but I would love a persian perspective on this, its a shame we dont have any records.

@C420sailor 😂😂😂😂 big facts that's why that kick to the chest was personal

The Xerxes character was absolutely perfect. From the costume, intro, making him enormous, and the acting. Really phenomenal.
