I don’t agree that platinum is so much harder to work with compared to gold.
The answer to me is in history. Historically, platinum was more expensive than gold. That has changed in recent years.
But brands don’t care and they still charge much more for platinum watches. Why…? Because they can. They make less of them.
Same as for limited editions which are just dial color changes.
Brands will do what they can to charge more.
Gold watches and such are best bought on the secondary market at a discount. IMHO.

This may be part of the reason. But the real reason is status and perceived exclusivity. Brands know that the Rich will pay more to have the status symbol that is an all gold or platinum watch. It’s the same as fashion - the alligator designer handbag from Hermes maybe seven times more than the regular one.

Platinum is harder than gold but scratches easily and is harder to polish.
I'm not quite sure that's the watch is twice the price because they make less. I'm sure the opposite would happen if the gold version was twice the price of Platinum.
Simply put they charge the prices because they can. Then market the he'll out of it. Their steel is almost as soft as 14ct gold. Thats why it polishes so well and a scratch magnet. I guess Rolex will be calling it a precious metal soon.

I have a very close relationship with my local AD going back many years. I noticed an interesting trend that every time there’s a new launch, there’s a short window where the new models become available to my AD and then suddenly stop shortly after or at least the supply gets significantly reduced. I have noticed this trend with the OP launches in 2020, deep sea challenge, then the OP celebration dial and the 41mm green datejusts to name a few. I would be interested to know your thoughts on this, particularly on restricting supply just after launch and also general about Rolex supply to the market. I feel rolex is trying to pitch itself more towards a patek style market in terms of exclusivity… 🤔

@@samuelburton5576 when no one buys the precious metal versions….yes they will offer discounts and it won’t be so well publicised. JFI 20% discount pre Covid was not unheard of.
Very educational…I learned a lot about the different metals used in watch making. I always thought platinum was coveted because it is harder than steel. Now I know it is softer.

@@landandair2179 just keep trying everywhere even when you are away on holidays and breaks, you’ll pick one up eventually. I bought a 40mm Explorer as a walk in whilst on holiday in Spain in March, they had various other steel watches for sale.
Talk about used prices. Thats all we can get anyway

The steel Sub is 9k with the green bezel it's 9.5k. Surely that's not worth and extra £500.
Then you jump to a white gold sub, that's almost £39k. The materials and time surely can't equate to a 30k premium. Not sure where there a question in there, but I guess I'm saying the disparity is marketing and branding

@@dannysimenauer5745 and this is where they get you my friend. White Gold isn't rare, it's made from yellow gold which also isn't rare. There's an unknown quantity of gold we haven't mined under the earths surface. There's plenty of gold. Rolex are the Apple of watches, marketing branding and heritage is everything. That's what you're paying for. Nothing more nothing less.
There's less Silver on the planet than Gold. Golds price is artificially kept high

Lets do some gold math. A normal Daytona costs 13'200£. The 112 grams of pure gold in a gold Daytona costs 6500£. Total about 20'000£. But a gold Daytona is 36'000£. The difference of 16'000£ is called the sucker tax (because only suckers would but such a watch).
I don’t want to say you’re wrong, and I don’t own a Daytona. However, gold is beautiful and combined with “I am proud to of achieved…”, you fill in the blank, then I could see buying an all gold watch. Plus think of the status it earns at the AD!
Can say the same thing about steel watches !

@@Jungleman707 I agree, Rolex in its strategy to move up market is getting uber pricey. JLC jacked up its prices 40% about 2 years ago, and I think JLC sales dropped. If Rolex buyers don’t go for the gold models maybe Rolex will adjust their prices downward too.

It's quite simple, Rolex charges what they do because they can. No matter how many watches Rolex makes, they sell every one. Not only that, no matter how often they raise their prices, people continue to go back wanting more. It makes no sense but this is the state of the typical brain dead Rolex collector.

What the f r u on about, platinum has always been more precious & expensive than gold, not the bs u're spouting. The following is case & point:- Platinum is also usually more expensive than gold. Why is platinum more expensive than gold? More than 1,000 tons of gold are mined every year, but only a little over 150 tons of platinum are mined in a year. This scarcity makes platinum more expensive than gold most of the time... It may be harder to work with but it's got f all to do with polishing. Everybody & there dog knows platinum is a more premium precious metal & you always pay more for any platinum jewellery, than gold. Also precious gems r a total jewellery industry manufactured scam, massive money when u buy but worth nothing when u sell...
Thanks for the comment but please check your facts first. Platinum is a lot cheaper than gold as a material. Check any metal dealer. Platinum jewellery is more expensive because of the work involved.

My first post stated that even though platinum may be harder to work with, it's always been a rarer & more premium metal over gold. Just walk into any jewellery shop & try to buy anything platinum cheaper than gold. Thought someone like you in the trade would automatically know that, along with anybody that's bought a piece of platinum jewellery but it just feels like your reply is being deliberately ignorant at this point.. Platinum may be spot price cheaper than gold but there's less of it, that's why you pay a premium when it comes to buying anything made from it... Jeez never thought I'd have to educate someone actually in the trade...
The question from the viewer was why do some watches in certain material that is cheaper cost more than ones made out of material that is most expensive. Love it or hate it, platinum is less than half the price of gold at the moment however you will find that it's more expensive on finished jewellery and watches. At one point platinum was more expensive than gold at spot but not for a while. As much as I am always open to learn something new, this is not one. It is a purer metal true, that's why it's softer but in regards to pricing, it's all to do with the manufacturing and the fact that it felt more premium in the hand and has an ever lasting white just hence preferred on jewellery. I am in the trade and I am always happy to be educated by someone but unfortunately this is not an education for me.
You'd give a dictionary a headache. The point is what makes platinum watches & jewellery worth hundreds to thousand pounds more than gold to say it's just manufacturing & polishing is making u look ignorant & then to double down makes u look arrogant, even if it's your channel. The reasons are, it's scarcity, historical market forces, it's industrial history & it's exclusively. You sell watches u don't manufacture them so to talk with some know all authority on the subject just makes you look pretentious...
