    What I liked the most about this episode is that we never see Matt Smith make the toast to "The heir for a day". I wouldn't put it past Hightower that it was a sincere, somber toast that he then manipulated into something more malicious.

      Exactly my thoughts. He’s a shades-of-grey character, but his love for his family is never really in doubt. He was extremely somber at the funeral.

      Exactly! They show LOTS of gore and brutality, but then shy away with an "heir for a day!" line. This literally means Daemon doesn't mean it in a demeaning way. He has always been blunt, he said they just grieve differently, and it's true cuz he is a different person. He likes to fck and see people fcking, so that's what he did to take out his stress. He also did it when he was reprimanded with his City Watch actions, he went to Street of Silk to fck. The whores and his Gold Cloaks just see it as their absolute win cuz their fave person, who spends time with them like they are his equal, will be an heir.
      Also, I don't even know why Viserys ranted Daemon wasn't grieving by his side or Rhaenyra's when he did not even talk to this daughter after Aemma's funeral. He's beaming with hypocrisy.

      In the book its not necessarily him mocking the baby. More like stsking his claim. Also its from otto who obviously hates him. So its never said of he did it in a bad way. And the show, shows him sad before he gives his toast. Like he was honoring his nephew. Also a fun fact is that he does love this brother. As kids they were really close and its y viscerys loves him so much. B fun going forward

    I expected Matt Smith to be good and of course he was but the performances across the board surprised me. Paddy Considine was the standout for me but also Milly Alcock was excellent which I wasn't expecting. I agree the show felt connected but different to GOT. Very solid opener.

    • @AdoreYouInAshXI
      @AdoreYouInAshXI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I had heard a lot about Milly Alcock being good in the first episode, so maybe my expectations were a bit too high... but she was nothing special in this first episode, imo. I was a little underwhelmed. But not disappointed. Hopefully she really steps it up in later episodes. Paddy Considine was fantastic though, and Matt Smith was pretty damn good too. I also think the actress that plays the older Alicent Hightower will be really good.

    They really left the whole "heir for a day" situation very open though, Daemon seemed to be grieving for his brothers situation ever since the funaral and seemed sort of sad when he was confronted about it. Makes you wonder how exactly he said it and in what context.

    • @kiera_rdh6697
      @kiera_rdh6697 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I like that they left it intentionally ambiguous. He probably said something like “although he was only heir for a day, we toast to him” but it got twisted out of context by Otto and Daemon knew there was no way to explain the context to his grieving brother without looking like he’s just making insensitive excuses. Such a sad scene.

    Something I loved to see was callbacks in the costuming to how Dany was styled in the later seasons, once she was more established as a dragon rider. I appreciate the ambiguity about whether or not daemon said "heir for a day". In the book, as with everything else, it's unclear weather he actually did say that or whether Otto merely planted the rumor that he did and uses it as a way to have daemon sent away. In not letting us see whether he said it or not in the show, they get to keep the ambiguity intact

In return, Daemon should have been the monster that Otto makes him out to be and poisoned Otto or set up his death in some way or another. It would have saved us a lot of trouble. But show must show...

    • @ThatAnimalBlundetto
      @ThatAnimalBlundetto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly this. It's interesting how the scene about what Damon said plays out. We as the audience never actually hear him say it. As he's beginning to mention the death of the baby and the Queen, it cuts to Hightower telling the king what happens. Even if we are to presume he said it because he doesn't deny it when asked- that also could be read as him disappointed in his brother believing the rumors.
      A big part of the text is even when we are reading it, we really don't know what the truth is. It's written from the perspective of a person that cites two extremely deviating sources.

    I'm surprised a good number of people missed the fact that the Maester said Aemma would die regardless. They could try to extract the baby but she would likely die from blood loss, or they could not try to extract the baby and both would die anyway.
    Viserys didn't choose the baby over his wife. He chose to put his wife in much more pain and agony (probably?) in the hope that he could save his son. Still a messed-up decision but he knew she would die anyway.

    • @souleylove

      Most definitely more pain and agony. Not sure if anyone else caught it, but I thought this part of the episode gave a really cool little call-forward when Viserys is referring to the words of the Baratheon knight and saying that “tongues won’t change succession” when, in fact, the Targaryen succession would be usurped ~170yrs into the future, stemming from the words of a Baratheon.
    Edit: I also felt like the hesitation of the Baratheon to swear fielty at the end of the episode was intentional.

    *Top* *10* *Favorite GOT/HOTD* *Characters*
    1. Bronn
    2. Tormund Giantsbane
    3. Jaime Lannister
    4. Tyrion Lannister
    5. Davos Seaworth
    *6.* *Daemon* *Targaryen*
    7. Euron Greyjoy
    8. Olenna Tyrell
    9. Walder Frey
    10. Khal Drogo
    I did like Cersei and Littlefinger. I thought they played the game the best. Tywin was great but he was a terrible father willing to throw all his children under the bus. Mastermind of the Red Wedding. Great leader. Bad dad. The actor who portrayed Tywin was fantastic. I can imagine Tywin as if Count Dooku being a strict father.
    I also liked Stannis Baratheon. In the Battle of Blackwater, he was bad*ss fighting near the front line. Killed dozens of people. But they pretty much nerfed his story in the show. I liked The Hound but also thought he was a bit overrated. Same with Gendry.
    I never liked Daenerys and Jon Snow. Sorry. Like Sesskasays (Jessica), I was Team Cersei. I think Daemon by himself is more charismatic than Jon/Aegon + Dany combined. I'm actually not interested in that Jon Snow series. He's a good character but I never found him that interesting. He's like Ned Stark. Good man but is he really interesting?
    I grew to like Sansa and Melisandre in the final season but grew to hate Arya who was my favorite after the first 2 episodes of the show. I did like Hot Pie even more than Samwell. I wish we got to see a young Barristan Selmy but the old man version of him who killed a few Sons of Harpy was pretty bad*ss already. I love Ser Friendzone, Jorah Mormont, but had to take him off my top 10. I liked S6 when he had greyscale but confessed falling in love with Dany.
    I'm aware Bronn and Tormund are just paper-thin, cartoon characters but they're a lot of fun. Tormund became a dumb comic relief once he started crushing on Brienne but he started off a more serious character when Jon Snow fought the wildlings. I like Jaime the most in S3. But after that, he was pretty much useless. Same with Tyrion. Awesome in S1-S3. Got dumber or more useless after he killed Tywin.
    Daemon is already ranked 6th and it's only been ONE episode with him. I got a good feeling he'll be at least one of my top 3 favs once the series is over. Unless the writers make him look unsympathetic once Blood & Cheese happens. It really depends on how the writers wants to portray him for a TV audience. They might whitewash/nerf him to keep him more likeable.
    Daemon Targaryen has the potential to be the GOAT character from GRRM's books and the poster boy/mascot for the entire franchise the way Darth Vader is to Star Wars. The writers better do him right unlike what they did to Dany 🤦🏻‍♂️. I've heard Matt Smith has some creative control over Daemon which is great to hear.
    More HOTD characters should start reaching my top 10 the more seasons we get. And they don't necessarily have to be good. Cersei was an evil c**t and she's one of my top 15-20 favs because I love Lena's performance so much. Same with Aidan doing Littlefinger. Sometimes it depends on the actor and how they perform their roles. Doesn't matter to me if they're good or evil characters. Darth Vader and Joker are villains and people still love them.
    I can talk Game of Thrones all day long. This is coming from someone who came to the party late. Didn't catch up to the original airtimes until S7 in 2017. Never read any of the books. Originally thought it was too boring and complex for me to care about like LOTR initially. Now I can talk about its good and bad qualities because discussing it can be very fun.
    HOTD's series premiere drew 10M viewers. Most in HBO Max history. So it's going to be popular no matter how bad GOT ended. People are addicted to its deep lore and awesome cinematography. I do think HOTD is really about FAMILY. It's similar to The Godfather films. It's a family drama. Daemon has Sonny's temper but very loyal.
    Viserys wants people to like him. Daemon doesn't care but seems to care what his brother thinks about him from his eavesdropping. He'll do crazy things but still deeply loves his family. Well, his blood family. Targaryens. Not his wife.. 🤣

    The characters here feel more relatable. The characters from the GoT series were, not over the top but a bit too fanciful, so to speak. They always seemed just a bit more exaggerated as opposed to what's happening so far in House of the Dragons. I think the House of the Dragon's characters seem so far to be a bit more grounded in having a bit more depth. Even the vicious scenes and viciousness of characters didn't feel out of place. I like this. No real character excesses. It all seemed appropriate because it was well written and well framed. Here's hoping they keep it up.
