  • In the age of horse drawn vehicles market wagons were used to transported farm produce from the rural to urban areas. Sometimes the wagons doubled as a stall from which the produce could be sold. In towns and cities this type of wagon could be used to transport manufactured goods to local or more distant markets. Market wagons had steel spring suspension that made the ride a lot smoother than the more simple farm wagons. This fantastic little model is from Dutch manufacturer Artitec and is specifically sold as a German market wagon (art. 387.57), but similar types could be seen in most countries in North West Europe in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Here in the mid-1950s, which is the era I am modelling, horse drawn carriages were quickly being phased out, but there would still be a few around, like this farmer fetching sawdust at the sawmill to be used in the horse stable. Please visit my blog www.sundborg.wordpress.com for more on my plans for a layout set in Denmark in the mid-1950s.
