Akiras other works include a lot of high tech stuff, so, he wanted to inject some sci fi into his most popular work, and what better way than to continue on from the journey to the west with a journey into space. And linking the main character directly to space through his brothers arrival is very organic.

Z is great but for very different reasons, and is a lot more action based than adventure than OG is.
Its the mid to late 80s feel of that anime. For some reason its just so nostalgic
