Well, it was never mainstream. I don't think most radio stations gave it much airtime, except for Break it Down Again, but even that didn't get a heck of a lot of attention. In the US, that is. I like Roland's solo work (including the stuff, post-breakup under the TFF name) better than the newer re-united TFF stuff. His work was very creative and he really had the vocal chops back then.
I love that you love this album. So I have a present for you. Roland Orzabal is a hermetic scientist. A true alchemist, and like all true alchemists he's filled the album Elemental with secret knowledge.
Tears For Fears need to get inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. One of the most underrated, under-appreciated, overlooked groups of our time. Their music is mood-setting, spine-tingling, heart-wrenching, and thought-provoking. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are a phenomenal duo, the former carrying this incredible song and album of the same title by himself, cementing his status as one of rock’s living legends. I can never get enough of TFF!
I’m so with you -TFF are Highly deserved - they have such incredible musicality & delicious voices! I’m rediscovering GREAT music I knew from the 80s like The Hurting & Songs from a Big Chair.. and songs I didn’t even know at all & songs I kinda only knew a bit like the music from Elemental which I recall from watching 90s MTV!

Roland worked with Gail Ann Dorsey first. Oddly, it's my fave TFF album by a pretty wide margin.
People don't appreciate real music anymore. Now, their favorite "artists" use auto tune, computer-based filters, and twerking to sell records.
