  • Auto Detect Ethernet Driver in RSLinx Classic on any version brought to you by Online PLC Support
When it comes to understanding on how to use RSlinx classic, it is best to understand one of the leading drivers that are used these days primarily because 90% of devices are now Ethernet-based so knowing how to connect and connect fast is essential.
Communication is often the blocking point that stops people from knowing programming and doing well with it.

How will I create communicate between my laptop & my SLC 5/05? Here is the scenario in my case:
    1. When I connected ethernet with the SLC, signal LED of the module turned ON, but no device found in latest version of RSlinx.
    2. IP address of the module is unknown.
    3. I have used BOOT DHCP tool ( Version 3.05 )of rockwell using different subnet mask, while there was no any sign of Mac address of my SLC. However it showed only Mac address of my ethernet adapter whenever I connected ethernet cable to my module.
    4. I have tried using both automatic & manual IP address from IP4 configuration of my ethernet adapter properties.
    5. I have used one crossover cable between my laptop & module. No switch or router in between.

      1. this depends on the RSLinx driver used. Use the Ethernet Devices driver then manually enter in the IP address of the SLC 5/05.
      2. Get the MAC address of the processor from the side to it then use BootP server then connect to the processor when turned on & enter in the MAC address to find to IP address.
No need for cross-over cable, laptop nic cards are smarter these days.

      Try a different Ethernet driver

What if the devices have a yellow question mark with a red X over them?
Would there be any way that I could changed the ip addresses on the ethernet ip modules so that I can auto detect them using this function of rslinx?
    Thank you.

Make sure you can ping the device.
      CMD ping

@@ShaneWelcher it wont ping, even though the ethernet ip card shows the correct ip address.

@@ShaneWelcher it seems like the modules lost their assigned ip address but they still show the IP adress. The adress still appears in rslinx but it won't connect. I have pinged both addresses and no response from neither.
By the thank you for sharing and replying.

@@adalmadera25 use Bootp to put it back in then turn off Bootp & DHCP

@@ShaneWelcher I am able to connect to the factory adress on the module thru boot p. I have typed the ip adress that is supposed to be for one of the ethernet modules. Then I hit disable bootp... which is done if power is lost or plc is turned off it does not loose its IP adress, is that correct? Do I have to do anything else, because I ping the ip adress and I get no connection.
