Hey MyPlayHouse. You were right about one thing. You need to select the bootx64.EFI file in order to boot of the USB thumb drive in the hypervisor port. I suspect Lenovo/IBM writes something special on their Hypervisor keys which the BIOS detects. Because if you want it when the system boots up and goes through the different options, for me it's Windows Manager, and Embedded Hypervisor, both says "none" before my serve boots. The other thing is I know you can install the stock ESXI 6.0 U2 on your x3650 M3's and older but for me I use the IBM ISO it will hang on initializing IOV which I have to disable by using "no OIMMU" at startup. My X3560 M3 is fully updated with the latest firmware for all 3 sub systems. Bios, DAS, and IMM.

Wish I could play with hardware like that just for fun, you wouldnt believe how much Lenovo charges for ssd drives for systemx here in Brazil. I use the same approach here as for esxi installation, usually do it in a USB stick. It saves spaces and IOPs just for the VMs, also once esxi is loaded it runs on RAM, so the usb stick sits idle most of the time (I also save the logs into a hard disk). Cheers from Brazil!

    bro, at last i bought 3 servers- Hp DL 380 G7, dell R710, IBM X3650 M3.
    1) All the servers are equipped with X5560? eventhough i told them to provide me X5650. will this ok for esxi 6.5?
    2) i want to buy one rack. which one will be better for this to occupy? 600 x 800 or 600 x 1000? 22U or 27U. i have couple of cisco routers and switches too. what will you suggest? i dont have more space in my room too. i dont want very bulky racks. at the same time i dont want my kids to play on it.
your video and suggestion really helped me.

      Hi axxo axx
Thank You very much! Yes the Intel Xeon 5600 series is fine for the VM ware ESXi 6.5,,and so shout the 5500 series be. I have also installed it on the 5400 series without issues.
remember to fully patch the servers, before going to the 5600 series.
I think my rack is a 600*800,,, servers are often about 750mm deep.

hi morten, i saw in your setup that the ssd disks was set as non-ssd, is that right, and would it be any advantage to set them as ssd disk type?
also, have you looked at using normal sata ssd disks in your servers? they are a lot cheaper, are bigger, and most probably faster than enterprise disks. samsung 850 would be some of the best comercial ssd disks.

    • @MyPlayHouse

    Two things
1: How reliable would you say it is to run a server off of a USB drive? I use a USB drive to boot my FreeNAS box, but in the ~1year I've run it I've already killed a USB drive. To be fair it was a really old, and pretty cheap one. But I did manage to kill it after ~6 months.
2: Do all (modern) servers have the remote management thing? And do they all usually have the ability to remotely turn on a server (even when it's completely off)?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi steaker1705
USB - very good, but best for OS that does not run much from the USB
MGMT - server usually has it, and you pay more for better features.

      HI
Well I like ESXi,, I am not going to tell you that Hyper-V or XEN or ProxMox or any of the many other, suckes.
For someone that have never tried virtualization Hyper-V is probably the easiest way to get started. When I startet on this MS was fast asleep in this area. so I startede on VM-ware workstation 4.51, went to VMware Server (Much like ESXi but running on top of a MS server) and then on to ESXi 4.0,,, which was brand new when i started.
Check out more of my videos on ESXi,,, If you have some hardware that will run it,,it's so easy :-)

but they compared VMware and Microsoft's virtualization solutions. In the end it's actually a matter of taste, Hyper-V 2016 will add lots of the features that were exclusive to ESXI and XenServer till now.

I will try the Hyper-V 2016 anyways. The only thing I`m missing in Hyper-V, are better support of normal graphics cards, to push through the VM`s. We are getting so much graphicsperformence for a low price in 2016, so why should`nt we be using it in the VM`s too? :/

I hope you are well in cool Denmark :) Here are the news from Geneva Switzerland, I haven't slept properly for days, since postage arrived :))) All the fun :)
You were right: VMWare Runs like the wind !!! on HP proliant DL380 G6 :)
Virtualisation is just an amazing step forward, Thanks Thanks Thanks !!!!!!
Just minor issues that all my virtual machines (Win + Unbuntu) have no sounds at all for now :) .... maybe because there is no sound card in the server ?? ... looking for a fix now or just Virtual Hardware devices can be achieved maybe ? ... otherwise ... I will get a sound blaster PCI card ?
The new SSD are in place 240GB Kingston X2 in Raid0 Array, on the 410i 512MB controller .... Fast, Fast, Fast :)
for the GPU, My PCI riser has in fact a big PCIe slot on one side - so it should be able to take on the GPU ?easy? - that i still need to buy - prob. I will go for an nvidia GTX950 2GB -
    What do you think ?
One mistake a I have done is that I missed the oportunity to install my ESXi 6.0 update 2( latest non-HP) on the SD card slot inside ... Now it is on one of the HDDs arrays bootable, not sure I can fix/move this to SD easy ?
Et voila , have a nice Week end !

      Hi
There is many Hypervisors out there now,, VM-ware, Xen, Hyper V, Promox Oracle VM, Red Hat KVM.
I can't look at them all, :-) If you like XEN, use XEN, that is also a great Hypervisor. I am more into the hardware. The hypervisor, I show what I use,, and know a little bit about. :-)
      Thank you for watching! :-)
