Yes! I have seen the painting in person!! It is absolutely massive!!!!! MAAASSSSSIVE!! And stunning! We had been taught about it before hand but it’s still a shock. The feeling of intrusion from it is amazing. I’ve never been huge on art but it’s on the top of my list! Still gives me chills!

I saw this painting in the Prado nearly 20 years ago. Of course I had seen reproductions, but I was blown over by the real thing and I never knew exactly why. It's huge, that's one reason, but I was so mesmerized by it. Only few pieces of art have that kind of effect. Thank you for this

Thank you for your video. I suspect the endless interpretations speak to the nature of the painting itself. To paraphrase Foucault, it shows the turmoil at the heart of the modern Cartesian subject of science at the very historical point of its inception. In other words, modern subjectivity is based on an illusion that Las Meninas makes explicit. The subject of the painting is the disarray in us. I too was mesmerised when I saw it in person in my early 20s. It draws you in and disturbs in a most compelling and brilliant way. The genius of Velasquez is there on the canvas. Thanks again for bringing to light this masterpiece.

as a sociologist I view this painting as a classic representation of 'framing the subject' - the academic term is appellation. Erving Goffman wrote extensively on how the spectator (the third person) is an active social agent, Foucault talks in terms of integration of the third person whose interaction is that of observer not participant, except for the painting to 'work' it requires the participation of the third person. It is a fascinating work of art, Velazquez was way ahead of his time.

Delightful interpretation! As a painter myself, when I hear what people see in my compositions I am intrigued. Much of painting is of course conscious effort, evolving technical abilities and experimentation with materials, but much is from unconscious sources. I learn something from comments, and realize the work has a life of its own with the viewer making personal connections. I have just provided a gymnasium for the eyes and mind.

A fascinating insight into this work of art. I should think that Velázguez would be quite amused to hear what has been said about his painting over the centuries!

The more research i do regarding this painting the more questions i have. Could Velazquez just be looking at a large mirror and painting what is reflected? The small mirror on the back wall with the King and Queen are just a reflection of a painting of the two of them on a wall to the side of the large mirror that Velazquez is looking in to.

Yes, Las Meninas is a GREAT painting, one of the greatest, that I dearly love, but that DOES NOT diminish the genius that went into La Gioconda. I would not compare them. It is difficult to see the Mona Lisa because there are always crowds around it and it is so small. One can much better appreciate the Mona Lisa from a high-resolution photo than seeing the painting at the Louvre. Most people are usually disappointed since they can't see the details at the Louvre. Las Meninas is a large paint that one can examine in great detail at the Prado. However, The Mona Lisa has a plethora of hidden images that, not even, art historians and experts have seen.

Of course you are right. Art is not sport and competition is completely irrelevant here. But on TH-cam we do compete for the viewers' attention and titles are designed to arouse their curiosity :) Have a look at my video on Mona Lisa and thanks for stopping by!

Thank you! According to history, the entourage of the Infanta included two dwarfs - Mari Bárbola, and Nicolás Pertusato - the figure on the very right - a boy, despite his long hair (see his clothes). It is a fascinating painting with so much in it - including the bizarre ways of the Spanish royal court at the time.

A great painting because of ... a lot of theories and speculations, but we painters certainly love painters painting themselves.
It's maybe the greatest painting of history, but certainly not the greatest painting of the Prado.

seeing as how 'they' chnaged the mona lisa, it is just a matter of time before all paintings, and whatever else is changed...but I know for a fact that the woman they show now, the young girl with a smile, is not the mona lisa...the mona lisa is a 40-50 year old woman, and she looks like she either isn't to happy to be painted, or she is wondering, 'Why me.'....the mona lisa, the real mona lisa, the woman has a quirk, like a scoffing smile...not a real smile...her quirk is on the right side and it smooths out as it goes left...actually, if you were to switch the mona lisa with the woman from the 'Farm' american painting...I always thought the man from that pic would have had a good thing with mona lisa...they both look miserable...LOL...but the mona lisa today is not the mona lisa of what I know....nope nope nope...God Loves YOU...

  • @albertodejuan6104
    @albertodejuan6104 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, the Mona Lisa is no big deal in the history of art for starters. It's value is just a massive marketing campaign to visit the Louvre. Las Meninas truly is one of the masterpieces in the history of art, for many reasons.

    It's a collage.
    THE END!
    Artistic interpretation. A vision.
An artist painted a bunch of components on a canvas. You can dissect anything into oblivion.
This is how to do it.
    Most over though piece ever.
