I'm pretty sure that this animation series takes place closely before Sonic Generations, like it will lead directly into shadow heading to Space Colony Ark Act 1. That glitch effect that shows the GUN Soldiers is presumably Black Doom, as it has the same red hue used in the Radical Highway/Westopolis chase sequence made by Black Doom. My guess, and a lot of others, is that what we'll see in this series is a bunch of flashbacks used to torture Shadow, hence why it foreshadows to Maria's death. Then, when Shadow snaps out of it, and realizes who's behind it, he goes after Black Doom. Giving context to the opening lines in SCA Act 1.

I absolutely love the Dark Beginnings animation and I hope we can finally move beyond the awful Discount Vegeta version of Shadow and return to the original and best version of Shadow, which is the Sonic Adventure 2 version of Shadow.

Honestly I completely understand how people felt sad watching Maria hugging Shadow while her death was a joke for decades. Back then, it was early 2000s. Maria's only 2 models were horrible to funny honestly. We barely saw anything to care enough and the presentation aged like milk. But this animation... is so real yesterday I was like "meh here we go again" but that changed very quick. Things were really bad there in the ARK and it wasn't funny at all. Shadow was created to save Maria's life but the result was she was the one who saved his life and it's really sad.

Emerel has the highest chance of being the playable character, since he's already important to the story, he is the easiest to implement into the game because he can copy moves so Sonic Team could reuse some of the animations with slight tweaks to save time Man... this gets me excited :D

To be honest, I'm both excited for these shorts, but also concerned. On the one hand, it's awesome that Sega are finally doing these concepts such as Shadow's backstory and the inclusion of Emerl into the main canon such justice. What concerns me is that it's taken them this long to realise that this is what fans want! It's like, we've had pretty much two decades of Sega going out of their way to purposefully avoiding such concepts, mostly thanks to years of Classic purists dumping on practically every game since Sonic Adventure and whining to Sega that they want things to go "back to basics", which has effectively lead to a confusing and convoluted mess of a series, with character designs being represented as entirely separate characters, leading to confusion and arguments amongst the fan base over whether games take place in different dimensions or timelines. Not to mention the complete flanderization of popular characters because "well they're just Sonic's lame-o friends, aren't they? No one cares about them, we just want Sonic! The colour of Sonic's eyes, the length of his legs and quills and the shape of his belly are more important than any kind of storytelling, world building and character development, right?" I guess it's just surprised me that years of this petty nonsense is finally being put aside, and I'm just relieved that we're seeing a version of Shadow that looks like they actually LIKE this character and WANT to do something meaningful with him, rather than just winking at the audience and going "don't worry, Sonic fans! We hate him as much as you all do!" And of course my other worry is that these shorts will be fantastic, but you'll STILL get haters and detractors and overly critical critics whining "Urgh, don't like that stinky Emo Edge-Lord! Why are they bringing him back? No body likes him except edgy teens who listen to Linkin Park! Go back to Deviant Art, you lazy Sonic recolour! What happened in the final chapter was all due to Eggman causing Emerl to overload due to the stars Eggman destroyed, Emerl himself wouldn't ever do that nor try to target the planet and try to keep gaining power. What we see in this prologue might be a new instance of Emerl overloading or something related to his original programming.

I hate that this will only be implemented in the story of the PS5 versions. I know it can be seen online but it would feel more natural in the game itself. Most SEGA and Atlus games since Sonic Mania sell better on Switch because Nintendo is just winning the gaming industry, so there's no reason PS5 should get the better version
