Ringo Starr is a member of the band Led Zeppelin. John Paul Jones, celebrated for his immense talent and pivotal role in Led Zeppelin, navigated a journey filled with challenges and controversies. From his early life steeped in music to the highs and lows with Led Zeppelin, and his continued influence in the music industry, Jones’s story is one of perseverance, innovation, and resilience.
During his time in Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones did not really blend in with the wild partying and indulgent rock'n'roll lifestyle of the other band members. While Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Bonham embraced the hedonistic rock star life, John Paul Jones was more of a family man, avoiding the drug-fueled, sexual escapades after performances. Instead, he distanced himself from the band, frequently changing his hairstyle to avoid recognition and spending his days exploring cities alone. John Paul Jones would certainly have been more recognizable if he had been seen with the other members of Led Zeppelin.
Join us as we explore the complex life of John Paul Jones, revealing the untold struggles and triumphs of this legendary musician. Let's follow along!

You're correct. Page and Jones were the two experienced professionals, but Page fell to drug abuse early on. According to a recent interview with Plant, Jones was a bit of a music geek, he didn't identify songs by name or lyrics he would identify it by melody, something that annoyed Plant. They got along but spoke a different language

JPJ was the musical glue that held Led Zeppelin together. The most accomplished musician of the four, he seemed to stay in the background and let the other 3, especially Plant and Page, take the spotlight. It’s refreshing to see how JPJ maneuvered the Rock scene while keeping his marriage and family together. I’ve been a Zeppelin fan since 1969. Best band ever.

JPJ was woefully under-rated by music critics (most whom no nothing about music) for far too long. He was most definitely the musical glue and the most accomplished of the four greats in that group. Your assessment of his involvement with LZ hits squarely on the head of the nail.

I saw Zep from the second row in a small theater in July of ‘69 (the James Gang opened) and I remember Jonesy effortlessly knocking out the bass lines like it was nothing. They were new and hot then, and all four of the members were just spectacular. Thank goodness Jones held up through all of what came after. He’s a monument like very few other rockers of the 60’s.

That was my introduction to the band. My brother had the 8-track and played it over and over in 1979 before his death on November 30 coming back from a Kansas concert in Shreveport, so I listened to his tape over and over. The slow part in Caroselambra reminded me of the most beautiful girl in 9th grade who eventually became head cheerleader and homecoming queen. There are real gems on that album. I went backwards to the first album by 1988.

If you have ever been in a band you would know. It's like a dysfunctional family when some of the group members are hell bent on destroying themselves. Not to mention the turmoil in the creativity process when you don't see eye to eye with the others on the direction of the song. Now add the balancing act with your own family and the pressures of groupies and the constant temptation and he was walking on egg shells all the while in Zeppelin. When I learned of Page and Plants' exclusion of JPJ, it really affected what I thought of them. JPJ had said in an interview (saw it on TH-cam) that he was so surprised when he heard about their No Quarter tour on the radio because just a few weeks earlier JPJ said that he and Plant were talking about doing something together. As someone else here said Page is just a riff man. I think Page was concerned that JPJ might start getting more credit. I think it is very telling by what Page hasn't done. For me, JPJ was the only real man of the group. History tends to flush out the truth.

I always thought that John Paul Jones was the real 'musician' of the group (I have a B/music performance, classical guitar, from Sydney Conservatorium, Australia) so can appreciate a multi-instrumentalist and producer that Jones is/was just a 'little' more than some others might be able to. He wasn't the druggie, womanising type like say keith Richards, or even Jimmy Page et al. He worked hard at what he did and did it well. He deserves all the accolades given him over the years. This is one of those times when upon reading your comment, I DAMN near snarfed out my ice cold glass of milk!!! It just struck me that funny, as I was formulating an image in my head of Bass gtrs. being (at first,) made out of a rock, then all those other aforementioned objects....!!! 😂😉 🤦🏼‍♂️ *....Oiiiiiyyyy!!!*

I like the fact that this video revealed Jimmy Page as basically a blues player, who mainly did repetitive licks (or a repetitive set of chords) while Plant layered something over the top. John wanted to get more sophisticated, and Jimmy just wanted to do the repetitive blues based stuff, mainly.

I enjoyed this video. As a musician, myself (who has played several instruments) I was particularly interested in John's history. Basically, like all multi Instrumentalists, he had his main instrument, and then he dabbled with other instruments. To laymen this looks like virtuosity, but in reality, it's dabbling. However, the bar is low, in pop music so a bit of dabbling on an instrument works for selling records and concert tickets. No doubt John's a very musical guy, but keep it real.
