The reason some of Midas’ games have anime characters is because they got the license to some games from japan, for example, the fighting fury game was ported from japan.
All things considered on that Kotobuki racing game, I do think the environment graphics are really quite good for a PS1 racer. Considering how I've seen other, far better PS1 games have a shitload more texture and polygon warping than this MiDAS thing leads me to believe they must have had at least a few decent programmers in their staff. I remember seeing the Japan exclusive Snowboard Kids Plus on PS1 have just the absolute worst texture warping I've ever seen. It had mountains looking like they were sinking into the ground and massive world geometry pop-in, when the N64 original had much smoother textures and no pop-in at all, not to mention more level detail in general. So, the fact that Kotobuki has far more stable graphics than an updated port of an N64 game by better developers should speak volumes.
Yeah it does look good, just generic as fuck. Plus when you're releasing PS1 games during the PS2 era, I'd say they had the technical limitations figured out at that point.
Coming back to this video after a while, I actually remember that there's a _singular_ decent game Midas published - Penny Racers for PS2. Fun, quirky and fast Japanese racing action. It has a sequel called Road Trip Adventure (that was actually released FIRST in the west - whoops) that's actually a straight up cult classic.
Got to love that when I went browsing in my local game stores recently I found Kotobuki Grand Prix and other Midas shovelware (and Anubis the 2nd by Data Design on Wii) I'd not seen until now after re-watching this video. XD Didn't pick them up as there was more interesting games and consoles to open opportunities I didn't have before. But its surprising as I'd never seen them, heard of them or bought them as a kid but I see them a lot now when collecting.
A very enjoyable set of review! Some nice nostlagia both from your channel ( The ''Did you know'' thing) and from my own childhood (Heracles, I used to really like the game as a kid, then I lost it) and of course some nice humor. From the gross looking shit to the part at 21:46, which would normally be an outtake. Good decisions throughout the whole video.
I don't think this makes much of a difference but Fighting Fury is actually based on a manga called Grappler Baki. I guess they changed the name for the game's international release.
Funny thing about that Heracles game... They had another series called 'Cocoto'. There is a game called Cocoto Platform Jumper, which is a reskin of War of the Gods. They did the same thing with the kart racer from each respective series. Pinnacle of laziness...
