I've been playing/performing/recording a long time. I've seen at least three marriages break up because of the 'band thing'. Two of them, including my musical partner of twenty years were given ultimatums-- "It's me or the band!". Serious stuff. On the other side is my beautiful wife of 31 years. She comes to every gig she can. Buys me things like guitars, amps, pedals on special occasions. She supports my passion ... and I support hers unconditionally. My wife's comment: "Why would I ever take away something you love to do?" Yep ... I am a lucky man.

One time my ( bipolar ) girlfriend got really fed up with my guitar playing, so she cut off all the strings with a pair of scissors, then THREW my Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster outside into the January snow, no kidding! I had to go outside to fetch them. That was 30 years ago, and that was my first and last relationship with a girl.

I've got the kind of wife who says she loves it when play...but only if I'm playing for just her, or entertaining our usually drunk nonmusical friends at campfire "scream alongs". When I'm in a band (especially when I'm getting regular gigs), she works diligently to sabatoge it, usually with the "this band is more important than me isn't it. ..it's them or me" approach. Little does she know just how spot on she is during those moments! ;-)

In my experience, a girl finds out you play guitar and thinks “oh that’s so cool!”. The same girl becomes your girlfriend and suddenly expects you to never play your guitar because she needs your 24/7 attention.
The one that’s really supportive and wants to learn but when you try and teach her/him they go on a rant about how stupid guitar and and absolutely hates it for about 10 mins then wants to try again and then this repeats

Mine was just indifferent to what I did most of the time unless it caused a problem, however she could be supportive and she'd rather have seen me happy, even if she didn't understand something but I was the same, hell she even supported my tongue split and my piercings, she even did my piercing in the most sensitive of places when I couldn't, as worried about hurting me as she was, as long as I had made sure she was OK BEFORE I did it. If I left the room to play around on guitar she was fine, as long as I didn't crank it up when our baby was asleep or something and she was a music fan, liked me doing covers or original work if it sounded good, we used to sit and sing love songs to each other and we made plenty of time for couples activities, even just cuddling up, having a take out, etc (she was absolutely the best at the etc! Amazing! ) She didn't need to be thrilled about anything else I did, or me her, as long as we supported each other and made time for each other and our family and weren't completely selfish! Sometimes it was best not to buy a new guitar even if she was permissive because if I knew we'd struggle, that's when it would soon become an issue, especially if I were to always be the one getting something and her always sacrificing, it's got to be equal, even when she was happy being the one to give up something for me as I wouldn't want to be selfish, I mean I love her!
I'm lucky, my wife is the one who bought me my first guitar after she found out I had been wanting to learn for years.
