Another good one. I really feel like I missed out on not going to Machu Picchu and Cusco 10 years ago. Great to see there are other less touristed places nearby worth visiting. Looks like an interesting place to try for a week or so. The temperatures would be too extreme for us also to spend too much time there. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! If you're looking for a good place to live in South America, I recommend Florianopolis (Brazil). It's a sub-tropical island right at the Atlantic coast in the South of Brazil, connected to the mainland by a Golden Gate-like bridge. It has mountains and a large lagoon in the center of the island which is great for wind- and kitesurfing, it has a sweet water lake and is surrounded by many beaches, which each have their own unique vibe, several are excellent for surfing and one place (Joaquina Beach) has some large dunes that also offer sand boarding. You can enjoy many beautiful trails sprinkled all over the island.
I've been to Cusco 3 times. In 1997, 2007 and 2023. 1997 we felt in love with Cusco so organized and clean, everything was just beautiful. 2007 we started seeing a bit of more population and unpainted homes and more visual difference of standard living. 2023 unfortunately Cusco has taken a turn to the worst - people are just building and building, making a small Lima with out painting their homes, trash, chaotic. Surely the years did not go well for Cusco and its neighboring invasions. Hoping that it changes soon but is out of control at this point. In 1997 all those buildings that now days you see build on the mountains, were not there. Tourism has unfortunately had a positive and negative vibe for Cusco - on one hand it helped the economy of Cusco on the other it brought in people from the surrounding areas who want a piece of that economy.
Thank you for this! --- The whole world is growing in terms of population... It's an uneven event... Some places do a good job of building out amazing infrastructure while other don't... It seems like in Peru, they're just letting people build the way they wish. --- We had one tour guide sharing their perspective of this and how the city has gotten a lot bigger recently. --- I suppose, we'll return in the mere future to assess out it is then.

Honestly, if you really wanted, a whole month might be worth it. There is that much to do.

Thank you for this! --- Oddly... We have skipped over Brazil, but we're going to have to check it out for sure.
