I am like half way through Trails in the Sky but I don't know what SC and FC are.
Are they sequels to the story or just remasters or something?

@@Masterpain33 Two years, too later but I highly recommend you don't. That is- if you haven't played anything prior. CS3 is literally mid (around 50-60%) grandstory, and there is 7 entries prior that are required to experience CS3.
thank you for doing this,the series is very intricate in it's world and characters and haven't seen a series with this much continuity or care as final fantasy or suikoden.
Freddy Martinez Final fantasy is garbage of late to even compare a great series like trails to the likes of unfinished trash like final fantasy is an outrage. Suikoden remains good.

Freddy Martinez I know it's been ages since you posted this but I totally get what you mean FF is like the granddaddy of RPGs for people in my generation. Suikodenn didn't is definitely the one I like the most. Oni is looking to do a recapitation on it in 2018 so excited!!
FF really HAS lost a lot of its lustre over the years. I'd say that the series has become a bit of a dead horse. While I've liked most of the games in the series, at least to some degree, I think that many would have met more critical success as stand alone games from SE.
Being an FF title comes with certain expectations in the meta and the gameplay. Games that really deviated from that-like 8, 12, and 13-have been really divisive. But I don't doubt that people would consider several of them absolute gems if they'd been flying a different flag.
One of the things that the FF series has never strayed from is mixing it up and trying new things. But that's also exactly what the die hard fans get up in arms about. Though it still sells units, so what do I know?
Personally, I really think that the series should probably be retired, and allow the properties they would have previously assigned a number to come out as their own individual games (or franchises if they intend to have sequels).
Regarding Trails, though. Just, wow. It's an incredible series. And the prior LoH games don't put the same expectation(s) baggage that being an FF title comes with. I'm really excited to explore the other countries in the current world with the Cold Steel games.

My GOD, you are amazing at explaining. I'm watching these so I could play cold steel but man did you really make me love this game off an explanation alone.
I was near the end of chapter 2 but didn't play for several months, so the first 12ish minutes of this really helped refresh my memory of all the events up to that point. This is great!

Thank you for this. After playing Cold Steel 1 and 2 last year I did pick up FC and got halfway through it, but I simply couldnt find myself enjoying it much. I sadly dont have the time to play through such long games without enjoying them, but I really want to play the other two CS game so your summaries are really helpful!
That's exactly where I'm at, and I read that as the Cold Steel games progress the other games' stories become more important to the Cold Steel narrative. A nice video summary (or 3) of the Sky games is just what I needed, and with the 2 Crossbell games finally getting a proper Western release maybe I'll give those a try someday but I'll at least be able to play through the last 2 Cold Steel games with a better knowledge base.
This. I played the ToCS games and was incredibly hooked. The first one was slow for me, and didn't fully click till I saw the cliffhanger ending. Now I want to go back and play the old games while waiting for reverie, but FC is for sure not clicking for me. I don't see it clicking too with the lack of voice acting, the gfx, and the gameplay. Now my only consistent gaming time is at night, and games with text that are slow burns don't click as well for me.

Damn, now I see why this game got its praise.
The 1st part of the story isn't that grand with all things considered. I mean, its entirety is like a subplot in other big RPG (for example, Bart's subplot in Xenogears) but still, they managed to make it feel grand and fulfilling. And that sequel hook on the final part is enticing as hell.
Damn, if only I got time to play these. Can't wait for the others part's RECAPitation!

That said Trails of Cold Steel 3 is currently slated to release in Japan this year (Xseed has kept quiet about an US release date yet).
And I have to clarify the video in that Sky was actually divided into two games and Sky The 3rd was developed independently when they realized they may want to create a bridge game to ease people into the Crossbell and Erebonia arcs (and leave several mysteries open for answers). So the games that were actually created together but split in two were First and Second Chapter.
And my personal opinion you HAVE to play the Trails of Sky arc first. It's your introduction into the universe and it will actually be extremely underwhelming to go back to it after playing the others.
You don't have to play them in order, its a single world but the stories of Sky and Cold Steel are just loosely tied together. Start with Cold Steel 1-2 (PSN has it). CS 3 is out in Sept. If you like those games go back to Trails in the Sky 1-3. Also for a 90min movie of a 70 hour game the anime is well done does a good job summarizing Sky 2. Sky 3 is supposedly a side story (never played it).
The anime summarizes Sky 2 well... ha. I'll just have to agree to disagree with all assessments. Sky 1 and 2 lose a lot of impact once you know it's main beats and secrets (secrets Cold Steel takes for granted and makes zero attempts to hide). And Sky 3 introduces a lot of the mysteries that both Cold Steel and Zero/Ao tackle (for example the fight between Osbourne and Olivert is officially declared in Sky the 3rd, and it is central part of Cold Steel's story). And the battle system is the weakest so honestly playing Sky last is just underwhelming all around. If you have the opportunity to start with this trio of games you SHOULD.
Now Zero/Ao and Cold Steel 1-2 are the ones that can be rightfully played in either order and nothing will truly change. They both hint at each other in equal magnitude so there's no actual issue of CS making the Crossbell games lose impact. What is certain is that you need to play the Crossbell games in some form before CS3 because a lot of CS3's content is coming from Crossbell's story. There are fanprojects for Zero and Ao and Zero actually has a sort of complete fan-release, while the fanproject for Ao is halfway through far as I know. Also,Xseed has been hinting at a secret Trails project which is doubtful to be CS3 (since CS3 is hardly a "secret").
Zero and Ao doesn't seem to be likely to be brought over to the west yet, so it got skipped over in favor of a 3d trails game.
Which is kind of weird since Cold Steel 3, involved Crossbell being invaded, which if we got this game released in the west before the Crossbell Arc, it would be weird plot wise as it would be missing story content from the 2nd arc.
Arc 1 focuses on Bracers (Militia).
Arc 2 focuses on Investigators (Detectives).
Arc 3 focuses on Soldiers (Academy Personnel).
I recently started with the Trails of Cold Steel arc, this video is a great help in getting all the details back to memory.
I'm still playing the Second Chapter. I hope I'm done with this series before you get to the third one. But gosh, those games are singularly so very long if you go for 100% completion like I do.
That said, I'm very pleased you are covering this game. Famicom has made some great games over the years, and the writing parallels with another favourite series of mine: Ys. Great job on this video, and it came much sooner than I expected! Maybe time is passing faster than I thought.

Also, the Lorence fight is winnable. You get bonus BP for that (And slightly different dialogue!), but you need to have a damn good plan to survive his powerful attacks.

I only ever completed about 70% of the game. But decided to take a long hiatus to cool my mind. I heard about the remaster, and actually played all those .hack games back in high school. I also played Golden sun and its sequel, but never getting around to the third game on DS. Good suggestions, I will likely get to them in the future.

This is exactly what I needed, thanks. I played through this game years ago but never continued the series until recently, since the rest weren't released on Steam yet. I figured I'd pick up at the second Sky game and the details from the first would all come back to me. They... really didn't. I was pretty much lost every time a character was referenced. Now I feel thoroughly caught up.

omg thak you, I played this before but forgot most of the plot, now I can get the second chapter on steam.
I had owned this game for like 3 years but the older gameplay style and somewhat slow start made me not really play it until I finally had nothing else to play and loved it! The story and characters are amazing and the gameplay grew on me. (Although I prefer the “Trails of Cold Steel” battle system to “Trails in the Sky’s”.). This video reminded me just how good this game and story was! And that ending!!!!! I still need to play the 3rd chapter and I just got an English-patched version of the “Crossbell Arc” games. This whole series, Sky, Crosbell, and Cold Steel will go down as one of the masterpieces of JRPG story. And the best thing is, you can come in anywhere in the series with maybe minor spoilers and go play the others.
Bestelle and the Liberl arc truly were peak Kiseki.
I absolutely adore this game and it's following chapters, and hope you wl eventually do the remaining 2 games

thanks for this. Still a little hard to follow. I started Cold Steel 1 on a whim, then completed it, did 2, then 3 just yesterday and started 4 just today. This is in the course of about 4 years because I was playing Cold Steel 1 on/off for about 16 months. With 150hrs clocked in and same with 2, 170hrs on 3. Thats why I didnt really fancy going too far back playing Sky and Azure. Just more money but also more and more hours and grinding lol but at least I have a decent grasp now

I just beat CS1 and started CS2 i decided to watch a recap on Sky since the Sky games aint on PS4 (or i would have started from there) i was so damn enagaged the whole time now i kinda dont wanna watch SC and the 3rd i wanna play em. Falcom handles these stories so well. what a twist with Joshua at the end

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky was one of my most fateful steam sale impulse buys and responsible for the most lost hours easily. Now we just have to wait as long as it took SoonChapter(tm) to get translated for the next recap.
One day I was looking for a new game, and Steam recommended Cold Steel II which was a new game available. I was like, "I will give a try, but I will start from beginning". I Dug around the net, found that Sora FC was the first of the series. I was like, "Okay, I will give a try, maybe is a good game to play when Im bored".
What I didn't know, that game is a masterpiece, every single one of they. After finishing Sora FC, i got Sora SC right after beating. I couldn't stop buying the sequels until I reached Cold Steel 2 (CS3 wasn't available).
And for my luck, Zero was almost translated on PSP version (and I beated after CS2). And 3 months later gurenheyakara released the Ao translation. Which made the series complete for me.
