    I would absolutely love to restore it!
    Perhaps demolish the totaled portion size, and restore the areas with a strong foundation?

      No bank or investor would ever bankroll a rehab of a property such as this unless it had very significant historical value.
      Level it and build a country club.

    When I was a kid and my friends and I went into an abandoned house usually to get out of the rain - we never destroyed anything - what we did was to begin to clean it up !
    When we were caught by the owner of the property, he was shocked when he came in and found the gang of us cleaning our hearts out. Guess he expected looters or vandals but in my day we country kids never thought to destroy anything - we always wanted to make it look better. so what's with kids today that they are so destructive.?!
    This mansion would be in great shape if they only had the roof fixed ! That one thing alone would have saved it ! Its not all that old as old mansions go.

      If I was homeless I'd get a bunch of us together fix that roof and move in and good luck getting me out and no court is throwing me out it would be a gun fight to the end

    After going through all the comments on this page, I can honestly say Sally that you are a much nicer person than I would have been on many of them. I enjoyed your video and have spent the better part of the past 2 hours learning about the history of this amazing residence. Makes me wish I had the millions to restore it! What a location! Can you just imagine wandering the grounds next to that beautiful river and the peace it would bring to your soul! If I ever win the lottery....

    From the looks of it, that building still has potential. If you cover the roof in tin and keep the rain out, then you can start on the inside renovations. Leave it as a wide open space but "tastefully" do the walls, ceilings and floor.

    Congrats on getting permission. I admire your integrity. Too many of these adventures by others are flat out trespassing. Calling something abandoned does not make it so, ask the owners how they feel about that!

    I live 3 miles from here. Unfortunately Sally has her facts quite incorrect. This isn't the mansion but instead is a very tiny piece of what was the estate. Most of the building burned down and was raised. My great grandmother was the cook for the original owner.

    • @SightseeingSally
      @SightseeingSally  7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +Theresa Miller - Apparently the Alexian Brothers (and several local newspapers) have their facts incorrect as I used them as references for my video (see my comment pinned to the top of this feed). Also, I did speak with the current owner on the phone and the caretaker in person. I did my homework. Perhaps you misunderstood something I said in the video?

    • @SightseeingSally
      @SightseeingSally  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +r linde - yes, it was. According to the Alexian Brothers website, the monastery was built by the Alexian Brothers after Mrs. Frank (Jennie) Peters turned the mansion and the surrounding property over to them per her late husband's request. That's cool that you worked there. What was it like inside?

    • @SightseeingSally
      @SightseeingSally  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +r linde - And, no I did not. I connected with the current owner who, after speaking with me, put me in contact with his groundskeeper.

    Wish I had Billions of dollars I'd buy and restore that house. But as I'm single & my only child an adult, I'd have to make it a vacation home for family & friends to stay in, Or it would also make a great B&B, lots of things to do fishing boating swimming, hiking, lots of fun things.
    A good retun on an investment too. Imagine the partys that place could host too. They restored Selma mansion this can be restored as well.

    Sally - thanks for posting this fascinating video of a home that i am certain had once been a beautiful residence. I live in Bucks County, PA. There are several very wealthy families who own residences in Bucks County. Consequently, there are persons who have the financial assets who could refurnish old buildings. In New Hope, PA was the relic of an old paper mill along the Delaware River. The ruins of the mill which sat on the banks of the Delaware River in New Hope, PA was refurbished and built into luxury apartments.
    This is true of some of the old factory buildings that are located in Hatboro, PA. (One of those buildings refurbished had been an Amsco toy factory where my mother worked in her youth. The factory was converted from making toys to manufacturing materials utilized during WWII. Mom worked at the factory during the war. The old derelict of a building had sat vacant for several years. I was delighted when it was saved and refurbished into apartments and offices.
    There are buildings in Bethlehem Pennsylvania which were formerly owned by Bethlehem Steel. There is a new shopping mall and a casino in some of the refurbished abandoned buildings that were owned by Bethlehem steel.
    I sincerely hope that someone could take an interest in this part of Americana and refurbish the mansion of your video to be enjoyed and used by future generations.
    Here are two links to a very special place that has fallen into disrepair. Gingerbread Castle, in Hamburg, New Jersey was a special place I visited with my family when a child. I think you would enjoy exploring the remnants of a magical place filled with wonder and awe. We hope that one day; the old castle will once again bring delight into the world of children, parents and grandparents.

      The construction of the building is masonry and steel which us why it is still standing. It is potentially structurally sound and could be saved though it would require a complete structural engineer's evaluation. Had it been built of wood, it would be long gone.

    Impressive. The fact that the lawn is mowed so closely, suggests someone does in fact own it, even if it is property of the bank. It may have been gutted, after the fire, with an anticipation of rehabilitating or remodeling the interior. The steel girder and support make for a sound structure. Property records are public documents and will tell who owned it, for how long, and when. Always a fascinating experience to do a title search on property.

    Hi Sally, Back in the day... this mansion must have been magnificent! The first thing i noticed was, how the water was seducing in a warm and gentle way. The mansion you toured had rooms that were very large and impressive. At one time, the owner must have been very proud of his estate. The view of the water fall from the terrace is beautiful! Thank you for taking us along on this tour with you. It rocked every step of the way, and was very interesting hearing hearing about the hostage situation. :)

    It's unfortunate that the current owner can't restore the windows and other damage to the exterior so this building can be protected again. But I'm' guessing in such an isolated location, one couldn't secure the building and vandals would probably destroy what the owner could spend so much money to protect. I also wonder why a mother would build such a huge estate for a family member. It's one of the most magnificent places I'm seen. But I would have used so much money to help destitute causes around the world.

    • @nonyabizness7355
      @nonyabizness7355 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      For Nunna Urbiznez; Actually I think there may have been a very distant connection between our ancestors. When our ancestors immigrated to the colonies in 1730, as indentured servants, our foreign name was just too long and so our branch of the family wanted a more "Americanized" name and shortened it to Bizness. Formerly the name was Urbiznez, the Russian spelling. Our second cousins twice removed kept the family name out of respect for the family patriarch; Shovitup Urbiznez. Of course there were tensions between the family members, because of the name change, so they parted ways. The Urbiznezs' became the wealthy part of the family because they invented the ruler and other items that were used in offices and teaching facilities around the world. To this day their rulers can be found at Walzmart and other major retailers. The Bizness part of the family made their way from NY to MO and became farmers. Also the Bizness part of the family fought for independence while the Urbiznez part of the family stayed neutral because of the relationship they had with the Crown. They were selling their rulers and pencils to England. The Urbiznez part of the family stayed in NY by their factory, where they had cheap labor, and now their name is printed on almost every ruler ever made. From the research I did I was able to determine that the Urbiznez' family branch was able to retire in Arizona and play golf while the Bizness part of the family just stayed in a four state area and farmed until they literally dropped dead of exhaustion. Drawn by the silver rush of 1879, a few of the Bizness family ended up in Colorado. Those silver prospectors lost all their wealth in the silver crash of 1893 and eventually made their way back to MO to work in the largest potato chip factory ever made. The few that remained behind in Colorado worked in telecommunications and the car rental business. One of them owns one of the largest car rental companies in Denver and is very wealthy. However, the one in telecommunications went from job to job due to the rapid rate of technical evolution in the industry and the downsizing decade. Many of the telecommunication jobs were outsourced to India. Most of that industry in Denver was managed by a crooked CEO who manipulated reports and eventually was jailed for his crimes. Nonya Bizness lost 25.000 to this crooked NY CEO. In my research I found that the poor sister of Ritzy Bizness, Nonya, lives in a two bedroom apartment taking inbound calls for a large cable company, at slave's wages. She was actually named after the female patriarch of the family; Nunna Urbiznez. Of course my name was Americanized as Nonya. It appears that you are also named after the female patriarch but you have the classic spelling. The name is unisex and can be for males and females, you know, like Bobby or Bobbi? In addition, the poorer sister of the Bizness family, Nonya, married into the Dumbazzes family whose family name will live on for centuries. The Dumbazzes patriarch, Stupzid Dumbazzes went from wife to wife and eventually ended up with 20 children by different wives. He never paid child support so many of his offspring ended up uneducated, lazy, potz smokers and expected women to take care of them because of their stellar good looks. The Dumbazzes branch lived in the hills of Arkansas and two sisters and two brothers came to Colorado to live with their other sisters. The poorer of the two Bizness sisters of Colorado met her former husband at a Karaoke bar in Denver. He was so good looking and 10 years younger that she just could not resist his charm. He was named after the patriarch of his family Stupzid Dumbazzes, and like his male namesake, expected Nonya to take care of him like she was his slave. Nonya eventually wized up and got rid of Stupzid Dumbazzes but kept his name because she was too lazy to get her social and driver's license updated. She also wanted to keep the Dumbazzes family name so she could be reminded to never fall for a handsome Dumbazzes as long as she lived. She also named her child with her maiden name of Bizness so that her child would never be a Dumbazzes. The moral of the story; never change your family name because you will end up as a Dumbazzes. True story only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. Are you sorry you asked cuz?

    Very interesting and educational. Thanks for taking time to show us this magnificent mansion. Just some friendly suggestions for future videos:
    1. Bring extra lighting. The natural sunlight was not enough to showcase the details of the walls and ceilings. Some of the rooms came out way too dark to appreciate what you were seeing.
    2. Consider holding an external microphone. When your husband was standing more than 6ft away from you, I could barely hear your voice especially outside and during the mowing.
    3. Consider holding a clipboard with some notes or a script. I appreciate you trying to memorize all the history of the mansion, but it's difficult to recall all of it in chronological order when you're "on the spot" recording. You paused many times thinking of what to say next.

      To further on Dunhill's reply, you have to ask yourself what type of video you require.
      My feelings was that the footage was similar to a real estate where the presenter in nearly every footage. Sorry to say that you moved your hands like a windmill because you seemed like a "fish out of water".
      My two bits would be that you make two type of footages, one is with the presenter speaking and the second is slow panning shots. Keep note of what you're about to say on a notepad to every footage for post production.
      Post production is the real key. It is tedious work but every so necessary. Sony Vegas is great at this and purchase a quality condenser microphone or a Shure SM Beta 58 microphone to ensure good sound recording quality.
      Music... Please choose your music very carefully because this can make or break any video footage

It can happen when they are water damaged,....be careful. All the questions are good ones around 14:20 and it was likely related,...anyone who would take a hostage or try to squat by force for rights,....would burn it to the ground. The old "if I cant have it nobody will" would be the first guess,...and devalued land would be the second,...but if they were found out,..what good would cheap land be if they were in jail for arson? Thanks for your work, I'sure that you will pick up the advises the people left on the comments. I think that there is a very interesting story behind the original owners that can be part pf a second part of this video, also you found people that lives near the place that can add value as seems they has lived there for years and also worked for the mansion owners. The point that I'm wondering is, for which reason the original owners gave this millonaire property as a gift? They were part or the church? Did you find any fire signals? I could not see on your video any burnt place. It is not strange to built a three floor house where a disability person lived there (and seems that no elevator was included, when I guess that the original family aparently has no budget issue) so the question is: the second floor was built latear by the monastery? The walls os this second floor seems to be unfinished, unlike the ones on the first. Please return with a second part of this story!

      @@claudermiller She explains all of that (sort of) in the video. After the original owner abandoned the house, it was purchased by the Alexian Brothers (a Catholic clerical order), about 1950, and they used it as a monastery to train young priests (novitiates). In 1968, the Alexian Brothers decided to relocate from Wisconsin to Chicago, and they abandoned this building. The waterfall outside that can be seen from the upstairs is known as "Monastery Falls", because of its proximity to the monastery. After the Alexian Brothers moved to Chicago, the building was no longer serving as a monastery, and the Menominee Indians felt that the property should revert to the Indian tribe. The Menominee Indians planned to use the house as an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center. The Menominees acquired the place for $1 but couldn't afford the upkeep, and turned it back over to the county. It's been deteriorating ever since.
