I don't get the hype for FMAB, I mean it's a solid anime but I don't think it's even top 10, it pales in comparison to other series e.g. Monster, LOGH, Steins gate, Bebop etc.

I love FMAB, but the fact that the fans go out of their way to give series like Gintama, Fruits Basket and AoT a 1 rating just to keep their favorite anime at the #1 spot is just pathetic. Who fucking cares what's at the top of the list. What matters is what YOU rate the show.

I was just talking about this with a friend earlier today, but it really annoys me how people treat the MAL rankings. They act as if it's a joke, but then their favourite series gets into the Top 3 and they become toxic elitists who belittle everyone "below" them.
Same goes for the ones already in the top spots, calling it "defending their throne." Like, guys, it's a ranking website, and an anime one no less. Don't get so worked up, you feel me?
It's not like MAL is the most credible site either. How many people have watched FMAB for example that don't use MAL? The people that don't like a given series would probably not go out of their way to go rate it on a website.

Other person could say, use IMDB then, but, IMDB for anime? We all know it is not a page aimed for anime.
The same I could say with IMDB, what if someone didn't like Breaking Bad? and because of that, that person didn't score it. Not because of that the site would lose credibility.

I always thought MAL was super wrong so I don’t really ever pay attention to it lol. FMAB is actually the only one in the top 10 that I really really enjoy.
My Anime List has one of the shittiest and most pretentious top reviewers I've seen so I take everything I see there with a grain of salt. Its like shit in the sideways, you see it and smell it but refuse to acknowledge its existence. I dont give a fuck if people dont like a certain thing thats fine by me since everyone has their own opinions, but jesus christ stop writing a glorified 6+ paragraph essay which can be summarized either as "I didnt understand it so I hated it" or "I just dont like it lol".

Every fandom consists of people, duh, the same species we all belong to, there isn't a fandom that consists of a special breed, a breed that is different from other people, that is entirely toxic, or entirely weird...etc. Anything you said about the anime community can be said about any other community; the comic community, the gaming community or whatever community, they all contain people and they all have good and bad people

FMAB (the English Dub) is amazing, but I agree that people on MAL shouldn't be review bombing other series just because it may surpass it 💯.
I love the dub, like vic was the perfect voice for Ed but The sub is still really great. Just fmab dub just mostly agreed to be superior.
I love the sub much more, as it didn't spoonfeed me every single detail as the dub did. I do however really like the dub too, and I think they made an incredible effort even if it didn't live up to the original.

It’s a nice info base too for looking up where you heard certain voice actors before. And I’m actually guilty of watching some shows just because it had a top tier cast of voice actors (like Bungou stray dogs or Durarara, which both ended up among my favorites) ^^
I mostly use it to keep track of the anime I watch and to look at what new anime to look forward to but I must say people on MAL are basically like people on Twitter. I mean just look at every anime reviews on that site, like seriously their takes are terrible

A good story is satisfying to read because of the plethora of interesting and well written characters.
Saying that only one character or a specific team of characters carry the show is a little bit of an exaggeration ..
While the truth is every character has an important role in a story. Even characters that were present for 10 chapters or so but their small time spend with the protagonist
Helped to further develop the protagonist as a character meaning that their presence were important..
To sum it up i just wanna say that removing a single character or arc from a story will definitely make the story completely different and it will most likely lose its balance
yeah but it's annoying to see people say Askeladd carried the Vinland Saga anime, like what they don't get that he is the main character of just that season, of the prologue arc, Thorfinn isn't, but there are other well written characters in it, e.g. Canute, Thorkell, Thors, that drunk priest, Thorfinn etc. Sure Askeladd was the best character by far and he stood out more but what I mean is if you take out Askeladd from the story, it doesn't make the story completely different, it makes it become non existent. You cannot remove Askeladd from the story since he is an integral character. So many dumb people out there. Moreover, many people shit on Thorfinn in this arc and find him unbearably annoying, heavily unlikeable, and I'm like that's the point, he's not meant to be likeable but that doesn't make him badly written at all.

Like it won't make sense if a generic character picked up that special weapon thing during the war and suddenly know how to use it. Like the plot needed someone to use that weapon and of course that is where Tenten is used for. Even if you magically replace Tenten in thatt situation, the character that will only suit to replace her part shall be in the end is like a ninja weapon specialist. In short a Tenten 2.0.

I really respect the fact that you said that there are similar people on berserk as there is to fmab, that they can't accept that people have different taste, it is something i have seen lately "oh whatever you are reading now, berserk is better on 5 different levels" for example Not many people today would say that about the fandom of their favorite medium when talking about others mediums faults!

@@kennethmendoza1350 i think a part of it is that by there very nature berserk or rick and morty wont be as popular as lets say pokemon because of the audience and the aformed dark elements. And because it isnt that popular people think its special because its unique.
So they feel they have to "convince people" that its worth it, and also to validate spending time on it, i mean i wonder how many berserk fans found it by chance and how many did by being told its super awesome and makes you a "true" anime fan. or something like that.

That's why I never felt part of the anime community,they take everything as a personal attack when you criticize their favorite or tell it's not your thing.Guys,chill out,just because I don't like something you love doesn't mean I consider it trash that offers nothing good on the medium it represents.Also,the majority loves the things I don't enjoy or love so congratulations,you win and I lose.At the end of the day,it all comes down to personal preference.After all,art is subjective.

I said the Lion King remake wasn't very enjoyable to this girl when I was in college and she was like "You can't imagine how hard that must have been, could you do any better?" Like....no? Because I'm not being given a multi-million dollar budget to do it at all. Some people always jump to defend anything that's criticised with aggression, I didnt even say anything bad
I'm scared to watch the remake but I'm interested to see what they did with the lion king. I will always prefer the original movie because I grew up with it. I used to watch it constantly on VHS as a kid. But I also feel nostalgic for the original 101 dalmatians and it's live action counterpart for the exact same reason. It's just a matter of opinion and theres no need to get riled up about it.
I am a MASSIVE FMA fan, I first watched FMAB when I was 12/13 years old, and it was honestly the first anime that really had an emotional impact on me and stuck with me till this day, part of the reason I think it had such a big impact on me is because during this weird and transitional period of my life, it was one of the very few pieces of media that treated me like an adult. It is easily my favourite anime of all time, and it disappoints me to no end to see people who seemingly love this show as much as I do, and are as passionate about it as I am, act so childishly towards others who don’t share the same opinion about it. It almost makes me ashamed to be a fan of the series when I see how these “real fans” treat other anime’s and their communities.

If you really want to make FMA fans crazy, start comparing the 2003 anime to the Brotherhood or the manga. You don't need to have another series rank above it for that.

FMA:B still top tier to me after all these years. Tried to show it to my friend and it didn’t grip her; showed her Beastars and she loved it. It is what it is.
As a side note trash talking a series is only fun when you do it with your mates as friendly banter. Taking it so seriously just means you need you probably need to work on social and communication skills

Im a die hard one piece fan, and I'm fine with people saying it's boring. The same thing with any anime I like, AoT, FMAB, etc. I don't enjoy AoT anymore, BUT i can admit it was well written for 90% of it. I liked the ending, but I didn't really enjoy the anime past season 3. Im good with that, most people should be, the issue is when people consider something bad for superficial reasons and think they're objective. You can be bored by Code Geass, One Piece, Fmab, AoT, MHA, idc; but as soon as you start hating on the writing without any genuine reasoning then you should keep your mouth shut. If you can create genuine criticisms, though, for example: One Piece's lack of death, I'm happy to accept that. I can admit every story has it's flaws, and I think that's a good thing to point out, but that doesn't mean that One Piece is "mid." writing wise, one piece is nearly perfect, in my opinion, but if people can point out flaws I am one hundred percent down to accept that. Just stop acting like how much you enjoy an anime means that its bad or good. You need substance

A small part of MAL community is just like that. I know you said you knew that "every fandom does that", but I am still going to talk about this point. The fandom is pretty inactive since well it aired 12 years ago and hasn't had anything new (probably won't). It's true that many anime get review bombed when they get into the top, we have seen this recently. Yet everyone blames only and mainly FMAB fandom, they mostly don't even mention other anime fandom (maybe AoT but that's it). I have seen how toxic the other fandom are maybe even more than FMAB fandom itself, many insults to FMA and people saying overrated (we can see many examples in this comments section), memes and useless posts raging, encouraging others to review bomb FMAB as payback. Last time I checked the stats of FMAB (about july) it had 19k 1s, and now it has 22k. That's a 3k growth in a few months of a somewhat old anime. Yeah, when checking the stats of other anime we have seen FMAB fans and other anime fans. But we cannot really blame the fandom, it's really vague, one could be using bots, and people would think that it's the whole fandom doing this. I would even say FMAB is mostly a chill fandom, they receive criticism well, they know that people can like other things more. Why do I say this? Well, I've checked forums in MAL, the subreddit r/fullmetalalchemist (the latter is really great). I don't like to compare it with other anime, but I've seen other fandoms many times more obsessed with scores and they collectively trash on other anime and its fandom.
My advice would be just to not care too much about stats, ignore the fandom when watching something.

Look I finished FMAB 2 years ago and I almost Loved everything about it. I have witnessed multiple times how a show managed to get past FMAB in fruits baskets, Gintama 2015, steins gate, and AoT and immediately went a few places down after less than one day.
Granted in AoT‘s case for its final season people were spam voting 10s after just the first episode aired so I get that but for the others, just …. Why.
I mean I personally don’t very much care for MALs tops anyway because a lot of my favorites rank nowhere near it and stand at some ratings between 7.4 - 7.9 (seriously try watching some in that span, you’ll find TONS of hidden gems) j but every time I see stuff like that I just have to facepalm, like just stop.

@@Ash_Wen-li yup have a lot of those in my top 25-30-ish, even among my top 10, my number 5 literally has a rating of 7.4 (Shinreigari) and I found another one this week that had I think a 7.7 in Humanity has declined. Sadly, there are no translated light novel volumes for that and since i don’t know Japanese I’ll probably never get to read the ending to that ^^

It's very ironic the fact that the mal community can't understand the personal preferences of a "MY anime list" (expecially the Jojo community), I loved the manga of fma and I think that the series is a good adaptation but I Always roll my eyes every time I hear "it's impossible to not like it"
It may sound strange, but aren't JoJo fans focused more on making memes and talking about how gay their favorite story is than arguing with others which manga / anime is better? I don't know what's going on on "My Anime List" or other sites like that, but in the rest of the internet they usually don't care if someone tells them JoJo sucks (at least from what I noticed). Well, they will probably even answer something like: Yes, JoJo "sucks" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), and then go back to making Shitpost memes.

Do you know Charlie (penguinz0)? Some year ago he mentioned for a brief moment, during one of his stream, how he didn't like part 3 and 4 as much as part 1 and 2, and Twitter fucking exploded and people made fun of him for weeks. To this day after years have passed there is people making fun for his "bad take".
The worst thing that could happen to a person in the anime community is not being obsessed with the most popular show, also that why I stopped watching at reviews.

My favorite anime and manga of all time is One piece, and i have been in MANY debates about the quality of many different anime and manga series. I have seen sooooo many toxic, close minded, childish and annoying people and fans of all sorts of series, INCLUDING One piece, that i stoped care about it.
All i want is enjoy thees series the way they are without being constantly told that: an anime is trash, or has bad animation, or has an unfitting ending and bla bla bla.

I recommend Masked Man, to see FullMetal Alchemist (2003) first, then watch Brotherhood. Trust me, you will appreciate it, man. I have found issues on both stories, but both shows express the same themes and ideas of the manga. I am not a huge of FullMetal Alchemist; I think it is a 7/10, in my opinion. In my outlook, the 3 best stories ever to exist is Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Vagabond. Also, I forgot the honorable mentions of Monster, and Urusawa's work. @@Z3RO_Myth Well, I respect your opinion. I don't think FMA 2003 is perfect, neither is Brotherhood. Both suffer from writing flaws that I do have issue with. The manga is also not perfect, as well. But despite their flaws, I appreciate their existence. Also, FMA 2003 takes liberties with the story; but at the same time, it adapts most of the themes but in a different way. FMAB is my third favorite anime of all time. A show that shaped my taste and will always be one of my favorites. Myanimelist community fucking sucks. If you care too much about rankings, then I suggest you shift to Anilist.

nah, it went downhill in the final arc, there were issues before the ending.
Take away final arc and half of blatant plot with one dimensional boring characters and then Aot will be only good

This video definitely hit the nail on the head in regards to the current discourse in the anime/manga community. Most conclusions I see now about an anime or manga are either “this series is trash” (or “this series is mid” to get the same sentiments across while sounding less aggressive) or “this series is the GOAT” and they almost seem reactionary towards each other. It’s honestly gotten annoying and I think it’s a product of the hype culture that we’ve built up over the years. But like, I just want to read my fourth wall breaking comedy manga about a guy in happy relationship with 100 girlfriends who are all cool with the harem in peace. I don’t need someone coming in and telling me why Attack on Titan is a far superior manga because of how it has deeper themes, or that Fate is a better series because it has individual variations for all the girls from 18 new universes added in the exclusive Samsung smart fridge gacha game which is now canon. I don’t care.

Def agree on you with FMAB. I like it, it's quite good, tho I've fallen out of love with it over the years. I wouldn't call it overrated as I feel like that's such a hollow statement, but the fandom's undying adoration for it does get under my skin. It's treated like it's the word of god for anime

I definitely agree with your points here Masked. Any series is gonna have issues that people may or may not like. The problem especially since 2012 I've noticed is people generalizing when others say they don't like something. Like seriously just like whatever you want who cares whether or not someone else likes or dislikes what you do.
With you reading certain American comics Masked such as Spawn have you considered checking out any Star Wars Dark Horse comics. I think you'd enjoy Crimson Empire or Purge considering your taste.

I take the stuff I like way to personally. So when people say they don't like "said thing" I feel like shit. So videos like this are a good example of how you shouldn't invest so much of your self into the art you enjoy. Just wish I was better at catching myself and doing something more "productive."

This is so true. For One Piece they tend to put certain series against each other on a scale, let’s say, instead of on the steps of a staircase. The staircase can go on forever, having many steps going both up and down. You can have one show be your absolute favorite but there could always be room for another series on the step above it. What tends to happen with talks about One Piece is whenever an individual has a series as their top they always bring up One Piece with it, saying stuff like “Mid Piece” or whatever. Like why? This happens all the time on TikTok but I have I feeling it’s not the only place this sort of thing happens. You have no reason putting two series on a scale and while praising one of them, you downplay the other show on the scale. Just put them on a step and LET IT GO.
