For anyone interested the plane did indeed crash land in Shetland in 1981. It crashed due to landing gear failure. The aircraft suffered damage on landing and as a result it wasn't economically viable to repair it. No one was seriously injured.
Because of bad weather the aircraft diverted to Sumburgh. On approach the pilot tried to lower the landing gear but all three gear legs remained up. The aircraft overshot and circled while the pilot used the emergency manual system, but only the right-hand leg extended and locked. Further attempts to lower all gear legs were without success and the pilot made a gear-up landing. The main cabin door could not be opened but the occupants evacuated the aircraft via the overwing emergency exit. Damage was minimal and once lifted onto its undercarriage, the aircraft was moved to a stand. It remained there for some months until a French team arrived to remove the four Astazou engines and other useful parts. What was left was abandoned in a quiet part of the airport. It remained there for 26 years until the runway was extended, but instead of being scrapped it was saved and now resides in a private garden in North Roe in the north of Shetland.
Interestingly, to any aeroplane geeks out there, it was a Potez 840, a 1960s French four turboprop engined 18-passenger executive monoplane, the last aircraft to use the Potez name. Ultra rare. Only eight were ever built.

The aircraft with the registration number F-BMCY is a Potez 840, which experienced a significant incident on March 29, 1981. Operated by the Club Aéronautique de Paris, the aircraft was forced to divert to Sumburgh Airport in the Shetland Islands due to poor weather. During the approach, the crew encountered a technical problem with the undercarriage, leading to a belly landing. Despite the challenging situation, all seven occupants survived uninjured, but the aircraft was deemed damaged beyond repair.
Did the same research before reading the comments... Seems it's a bad callsign / registration number. While I found the information you stated, I also found another current one with a tragic incident. A tragic incident occurred at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 29, 2024. No way my favourite TH-camr has finally gone the Shetland! I grew up in Shetland until I was 17 now 21 I never would’ve thought Sir Bald would go to my home island !!🎉
my birthplace also❤ nice to see Sir Bald pronounce it correctly at top of video! ( for those that don't know it's Shetland/ Shetland Isles, NOT shetlands) thanks Ben for visiting!
You didn't go as far north as possible in the Shetlands. You can take the ferry to Yell and then to Unst. On Unst (the northernmost of the Northern Isles of the Shetlands), you will find Skaw, the northernmost settlement of the United Kingdom. Just to the northwest of Skaw is Out Stack the northernmost point in Britain, at 60.86 degrees North latitude. It's further north than all of the capitals of Nordic nations (save Reykjavik). Nearby is Muckle Flugga Lighthouse, which warns passing ships of the rocky coastline and small islands nearby.
Clune Park was a thriving community in the late 19th century and early 20th century when shipyard workers needed accommodating for during a busy era in the business. A primary school was built in 1887 to teach the worker's children. The church beside it was built in 1905 in a Gothic style. The Clune Park area consisted of 430 flats in 45 four storey tenement buildings. The majority of the flats were small, with 69 bedsits, 310 one bedroom flats and 51 two-bedroom flats. As a result the area had one of the highest densities of housing in Inverclyde. Over the years, the decline in shipbuilding caused many to leave the area. With the apartment population falling, the church closed in 1997 with the school following suite in 2008

The reason the closed hotel has the 'open to non-residents' sign is that until the late 1970s you could only get a drink on Sundays in hotels and then only if you were a 'bona fide traveller'!
My cousin from Dunfermline visited us here in England when he had recently turned 18 (UK drinking age). When I came in to the living room around noon he was sat reading the newspaper."Tam" I asked "are ye no fir the Pub today?". "Ha Ha" he retorted snidely "it's Sunday". "And?" I questioned. "Pubs are shut on Sunday" was the stern reply. "Not in England they're not" was my informed response. The draft from his hastened exit of the room turned a page on the abandoned newspaper! Wherever you're suppin' Tam thanks for the memory.

I live in Port Glasgow!! Clune Park street went dowmhill in the 90s/2000s- it was filled with drug dealers and addicts, the houses were even sold on auctions for as little as £2000. Landlords scooped them up,filled them with anyone on dole as they get their rents paid by the government (guaranteed cheque every month for the landlord) and then they let the houses rot , didn't repair them, didn't do them up inside etc. There was murders , someone was killed and body hid in the floorboards too. Its said that those landlords are basically hanging on to them so theyll get bought out for the land as they're too dangerous to live in ,too old and rotted to fix up and make liveable again. You should have went to Ferguson's shipyard, you were right next to it at the statues or Newark Castle was right there too, for history of the town. Also ,its a pity you didnt get any interviews in the auctioneer after the game, the despair would have been amazing to see 😂😂 Enjoyed the video! 🍀🇮🇪

It's pretty shocking to see what the British establishment has done to its own nation and its people. No politician should be exempt from responsibility. They all share an equal measure of responsibility for our nation's decline into a 3rd world sewer. It's pitiful. That includes the Scottish establishment
Last time I checked, politicians in the UK are elected by the population. Who, in general, seem to have no problem with the ~50% (and increasing) government expenditure to GDP.
Yup we would like to see more diversity in middle, east, Pakistan and India also the south east Asian countries aswell....lets make, pallystein, yeman, Lebanon and south Africa Great again.
What I don't understand is we complain over and over again about a housing problem, yet thousands of buildings stand empty. Why didn't they use those buildings for new housing before they all rotted away?
the main housing problem is that there aren't houses in areas people want to live. to be blunt, there is a reason why those houses were abandoned-there are few jobs, the shipbuilding and port industries that caused this town to grow are a shell of what they once were. people want houses in oxford, cambridge, london and the like, not here.
They do, thst plot is being redeveloped. Have a look at the Glasgow subreddit for flats a s houses with damp problems and bad insulation. That's why some are torn down for redevelopment.
@@hoixthegreat8359 All you say is true, but a better government could still use those areas, by making special advantages for industries that don't have location requirements to settle there, or by moving government business to more remote locations, increasing the workforce. This has worked in my country, when the textile industries died because everything was being made in bangladesh and vietnam, new IT and electronic industries got there instead, with tax cuts or other benefits to make it worthwhile for those companies to make that move.

The industry has dramatically declined, however, recently business has picked up again, due to the new orders of the new line of frigates, for the Royal Navy. Hope to see you back again Bald 👍
One of my most memorable vacations ever was a driving tour of Scotland, my wife driving and me partaking of as many drams of single malt per day as possible. From several days on Islay, then working out way up the west side through Oban past Ben Nevis into Inverness, on to Glen Morangie and up to my Castle Varrich near Tongue my forebearers clan Mackay. Damn we missed the ferry to Orkney Islands and Highland Park, maybe next time. Traversing south through Speyside lost count of the distilleries. Did stop for Iain Burnett’s truffles and stocked up, pairs well with so many single malts. Finished up with Stirling Castle before heading to Glasgow to catch the train to London. All of the Scotts we met and interacted with were amazing, welcoming and friendly. Best vacation ever!

The aircraft overshot and circled while the pilot used the emergency manual system, but only the right-hand leg extended and locked. Further attempts to lower all gear legs were without success and the pilot made a gear-up landing. The main
cabin door could not be opened but the occupants evacuated the aircraft via the overwing emergency exit.

On approach, none of the three landing gears were able to be lowered, so they had to land without the landing gear extended. The aircraft is a Potez 840, a French designed 4 engine 18 passenger plane. Produced between 1961 - 1967 there was only 8 ever built. It was diverted to Sumburgh because of bad weather but the landing gear failed to deploy and on the 29th March 1981 at 2pm, it landed but overshot the runway, suffered minor damage but was written off, it then remained at the airport for 26 years until it was moved to the private garden. It had 7 souls on board but all escaped alive.

The reason the closed hotel has the 'open to non-residents' sign is that until the late 1970s you could only get a drink on Sundays in hotels and then only if you were a 'bona fide traveller'!
And have a drink after 22:30 at night, hotels had different licensing rules back in the day🍺
My cousin from Dunfermline visited us here in England when he had recently turned 18 (UK drinking age).

This has worked in my country, when the textile industries died because everything was being made in bangladesh and vietnam, new IT and electronic industries got there instead, with tax cuts or other benefits to make it worthwhile for those companies to make that move.
the housing problem is because of mass immigration, not lack of houses
