This video wasn’t planned, but I put on new strings for the upcoming Lateralus cover and suddenly thought “Why not do another Tool remake?”. I never liked my original Stinkfist cover so I decided to cover it again, this time with improved tabs, improved sound and improved uh, whatever. I’ll put all the new changes/corrections in the description. EDIT: Justin plays the high D during the intro (and again at bars 23-26) on the 5th fret of the A string. It's the same note though
LOL. I just saw this and thought "how the hell did I miss the fact that Leo's covered Stinkfist at some point?!" Then I noticed it was only posted 3 hours ago. Nice work, as usual.
Appreciate the update on the tabs, especially the tuning, stinkfist is such a fun song to play, and you can tell that even though JC didnt write this song, he had some fun playing it for the record and making it his own.
Oh I play this one. As usual, I see many of my little mistakes, a new song to improve on my side. Especially the quartal chords and the rythm in the bridge at 3:52. Thanks ! (and didn't remember you already did it, I must have learnt it before I saw your youtube channel ^^;)
you played some parts that I've missed or played a bit off.. Also what do you think about playing the B (9 on low D string) as a power chord around the 3:30 part? That's how I hear it, I reckon it's in there. Great playing as always, tone is good too. I'm going to have to re learn some parts that you shed light on for me, thanks. Haven't covered this one yet and you've inspired me.. I better slap some fresh strings on....
Thank you! Honestly I'm not hearing any chords there at that part. We'd be looking for a higher F# and I don't hear that in the studio version. Still, play how you want it!
@@LeoBassCovers2 yeah fair enough maybe it's the B minor in the guitar part that kinda 'thickens' that part that makes me wonder if the F# is in the bass as well.. it would fit with that chord too. It's these details I like geeking out over in tool's songs! I'm always open to changing how I play based on new revelations. I won't play that chord if it's not in there! haha. I'll check some live clips. I'm probably wrong but I like investigating.
th-cam.com/video/AMX5_KPxyXM/w-d-xo.html so... I think he does play it only on the last B of each bar. At 3:47 in that live clip that power chord is held and easy to hear, before the next part.
I think Justin is clearly having fun in this one, changing it up slightly. He's doing bends on the B, he randomly switches to only playing the F# at times, etc. Can't forget that musicians change it up live so that it stays fun. Another explanation is that a band evolves and eventually finds better ways to play a song. So while the F# may not have been there in the studio version, he added it later on and now he plays it during the live shows. So the F# fits, it all makes sense and he DEFINITELY plays it live. But I am not convinced that I hear it in the 1996 studio track.
@@LeoBassCovers2 yeah I agree with everything you said there bro. I heard him say in an interview / podcast that he has developed how he plays songs live and he did say something like, damn I wish I figured that out and played it that way on the album. The extended stinkfist is so good, so too the extra middle part they throw in during schism live, very cool
It would be fun to see the covers of live extended songs like stinkfist, schism or lateralus, those extended live sections add "extrajuice" at the original ones...and they are really fun to play too
A remake of a cover AND A LATERALUS COVER? Along with the previous Kyuss cover, 2025 is already being a great year on this channel lol! Not to greedy with your incredible work, but I'd sell my soul to have the live version of Jerk Off covered, as always, great stuff Leo ❤️
@LeoBassCovers2 th-cam.com/video/l2_pH8rr750/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mKOREejTf5rCWCy3 It has a crazy extended middle section, sounds like some early version of The Grugde or something like, super hypnotic
Thank you! So at first I remembered that somebody once mentioned that they downtuned the high D string for some reason. That didn't work for me and once I realized that basically all my Aenima covers are slightly out of tune, it only made sense to me that most of the album is in A=442 or somewhere around that. Eulogy is also really, really out of tune compared to A=440
Thank you! I was having trouble with the tone until I switched on the DSP Parallax plug-in which completely transformed into this tone. New strings do help a lot and a certain way of picking also benefits the tone. As in, if you pick too lightly, it's not going to sound that great
It is yep. Standard tuners are tuned to the frequency where the note A4 is tuned to 440hz. Some bands, however, tune slightly above or below that. In some cases, the tuning changes slightly due to how the album was exported. In a nutshell, this song is tuned slightly higher than a normal song in A=440.

Can’t wait for laterlaus
Upcoming Lateralus cover you say?!?!?!
YUP
After all of these years, finally Lateralus cover
How are you getting THAT bass sound? What amp? Are you running effects??
I recently learned that Paul D’Amour actually has the writing credits for this song! He is also credited on Eulogy, H. , and Pushit
Well there you go. There’s not that big of a distinction between Paul and Justin’s bass playing on tool to me
pretty sure the bass we hear on the album is justin, however
LOL. I just saw this and thought "how the hell did I miss the fact that Leo's covered Stinkfist at some point?!" Then I noticed it was only posted 3 hours ago.
Nice work, as usual.
Oh the old Stinkfist cover was from 2018 or something, it was a horrible video so I had to do this.
Thank you!
A classic!!! Thanks as always Leo- hope you are doing well!
Thank you! You too! :)
Oooooo love this! This song always seemed so simple with the old tabs. Glad to see more added to it!
I'm so glad I could finally do this! The song become even more fun imo

Also, can't wait for the lateralus cover

Care to share how you're getting that monstrous tone? Absolutely brilliant sounding!

Cool stuff leo, could i interest you in some metallica? (Specifically battery or welcome home sanitarium)
what does A=442 mean? is that some kind of special tuning?
It is yep. Standard tuners are tuned to the frequency where the note A4 is tuned to 440hz. Some bands, however, tune slightly above or below that.
