"I'd buy that for a dollar!" Fun Fact: Nancy Allen first arrived on set when Paul Verhoeven was shooting the deliberately cheesy sitcom "It's Not My Problem" which appears on television screens throughout the film. Allen was initially horrified to think that she had signed on to make a film with an incompetent director. Movie Magic Fact: Most shots of Robocop and the police car show him getting out or preparing to get in. Peter Weller didn't fit into the police car in full costume. When he needed to be in the car, he wore the top part of the costume and sat in his underwear. To maintain the illusion that RoboCop wears the entire suit while inside a car, most shots show his robotic feet exiting first. Fast Thinking Fact: For the attempted rape scene, writer Edward Neumeier originally had RoboCop (Peter Weller) shoot past the victim's cheek, hitting and killing the rapist. While getting ready to shoot the scene as scripted, Paul Verhoeven noticed that Donna Keegan's legs were spread apart, giving him the idea to have RoboCop shoot between her legs and hit the rapist in the genitals. Neumeier loved the idea and that was how the scene was shot.
Starting Paul Verhoeven trifecta of sci-fi commentary/satire on society, I see. Now you need Total Recall and Starship Troopers to complete it. Then they remade Robocop into a PG-13 sludge with no edge, wit or idea what it wanted to say.
The 2013 was trying to say something about automated warfare (ie drone strikes), but completely fumbled it and wasted some solid talent in Kinneman and Haley.
I love that you picked up on all the not-too-subtle messages from the director. His genius continues in TOTAL RECALL, BASIC INSTINCT, STARSHIP TROOPERS and the misunderstood SHOWGIRLS. I know he has other good movies, but those are the 4 I recommend. Oh and also HOLLOMAN... which you need to watch before SCARY MOVIE 2.
Robocop 2 was pretty cool too, just skip Robocop 3. I'll add Flesh+Blood to the list, released in 1985, a movie happening during medieval age, with the great Rutger Hauer, a very realistic movie during this era, I let you imagine how brutal this one is...
@@ShreeNation in my opinion you are most company hater i think i can feel it durinng your reaction but paul is not simple guy as you think you must understand ocp is creator of robocop and he done so many great archievement after painful death and resurrection and he save so many inccent life too (if he just human being he couldnt) i think this context borrow from bible (like passion of christ) so ocp is unethical company and greedy yes i agree and murphy is not deserve die like this but also his sacrifice make hole new brave world and new chapter of detroit its really painful to watch but this is the life we living paul want expression that massage
While they were filming this scene, Paul Verhoeven asked one of the EMTs that was acting in the scene if it were really possible to save someone in that bad of condition and they told him that they had saved people in far worse shape than what Murphy was in.
This is my favorite movie of all time. It has everything, action, drama, comedy, a good hero you root for, disgusting bad guys you hate, an interesting story, good music, good effects, it was ahead of its time. I think the movie does perfectly everything it wanted to do. It's not just "robot shooting and explosions", it's about greedy companies, what is being human, how Murphy gets turned into a "product" but he regains his humanity. The scene at the empty house is so sad!, it's heartbreaking, and it's amazing the actor managed to perform emotions and let us know how the character feels and what he is thinking without a word, just with movements. In general he did a great job considering he was most of the movie stuck in the robot armor with most of his face covered. The ending is great, the moment he is asked his name and he says "Murphy", it's like he recovered his humanity and identity, he's a person again, he's not a product anymore. And it's gradual, over the movie pay attention to his voice. He starts with fully robot voice and mannerisms, but as the movie progresses he sounds less like a robot and more like a normal human. By the time he removes his helmet he stops sounding like a robot, when he talks to the bad guy in the final battle or when he talks at OCP, his voice and way of talking is fully human. Obviously the city still is a mess, the evil corporation still owns the cops, it's a cyberpunk setting, the bad guys already won even before the events of the movie happened. Try "Starship Troopers" and "Total Recall" next. There are Robocop sequels but they are not very good. 2 has good ideas but is not as good, it's not as consistent in quality. 3 is just an horrible unwatchable mess, and the remake is the kind of movie OCP would make for PR and marketing reasons, it's the "robot shooting" generic action movie the original isn't.
You are one of two internet reactors I've seen who seems to get what the director is saying in this film. I can't tell you what a relief that is. Thank you.
ED-209, the 'future of policing', is nothing but armor, guns, and a menacing voice 😅 It has no way to detain a suspect or even make an arrest... Verhoeven's satire is always on point 👍 Corporate greed, police brutality, commercialism, and even the viewer's love of gore/carnage are all taken shots at in Robocop.
Also, notice that the ED-209 wasn't programmed to threaten a person pointing a gun at a civilian. It only activates when you point the gun at ED-209, showing that protecting the innocent isn't a priority.
Glad to see you responded to this so favourably---it really is an all-timer. Just an extraordinary piece of work in every respect. One thing, re: the backup units not showing up at the steel mill. They repeatedly called for backup, and the dispatcher kept either giving them meaningless E.T.A.s or telling them that backup units were unavailable. This wasn't coincidence: In the preceding scene, Bob Morton told his boss that they'd moved prime candidates for the RoboCop program to other areas according to risk factor...which is likely why Murphy wound up getting transferred to that precinct in the first place. He even mentioned to another cop that OCP was "moving a lot of guys around". The lack of backup units could well simply be because of the out-of-control crime in that district...but it's just as likely that OCP engineered such circumstances to provide suitable casualties that can be used for the RoboCop program, as Morton suggested.
I assume the dead plants with the photograph in his old home were there since his funeral. The photo was probably partially burned by a melted candle. The movie had in fact an happy ending, with Murphy regaining his humanity. They don't show Lewis after being shot, but Murphy did say they'll fix her, implying that her injuries were not fatal.
Hey Shree! Not sure the criminal at the gas station recognized Murphy's face, with most of it covered. Maybe. Maybe the voice too. But most people miss that, when Murphy was at the old factory where the gang was, remember how he said, "Dead or alive you're coming with me."? He then repeated the same words at the gas station. :)
Hey Shree, I can remember it like yesterday, when Robocop came out. The theater lobby had a full blown 7-foot version of ED-209 staring you down. -------- It was so next level marketing, so super cool. Ed -209 was definitely the future of urban unrest passification. Love it.
I love the idea of world building through showing TV programs and commercials. 6000 SUX legit sounds like the name of an 80's sports car lol. In Total Recall, his next movie, the director subverts the idea of product placement. A large hotel chain asked to have their name removed when they found out their brand would be used for a hotel in the "Red light district"
Such an awesome Cyberpunk Sci Fi Action Adventure film! It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing. Before Peter Weller was cast as RoboCop, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the role, until Weller was cast as Schwarzenegger and most of the other actors had large frames. Weller couldn't eat any solid food except for Yogurt, Ice cream and Oatmeal and even had a protein shake during his lunch period. It took the effects team 10 hours to get Weller in and out of the suit! They even put an air conditioner in the suit to prevent Weller from passing out. It was 110 degrees in Dallas Texas where they were filming. The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippett whom did VFX work for Star Wars, JURASSIC PARK and Starship Troopers. The film was a box office success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.
@@ShreeNation always a pleasure seeing you react to classics, now I'm torn about if to recommend you whether to react to the Robocop sequels or to recommend a two part animated movie based on a comic that cemented itself into pop culture history The Dark Knight Returns parts 1 and 2? that is of course if you're up for it, if not I'll wait for your next reaction, keep the awesome work coming.
@@ShreeNation Peter Weller got finally his doctorate in art in 2014 🙂 so thats his senior citizen life . being a doctor of art history . Director Paul Verhoeven golden era was 1987 Robocop - 1997 Starship Troopers , over the top R rated movies , inspiration of some Sam Peckinpah movies . Sam Peckinpah , The Wild Bunch 1969 , based on real gang in 1890s US , end scene , Battle of bloody porch , says about all .
the first movie was filmed in Dallas, Texas. the second was filmed in Houston, where I live, and there were times when I could visit the set where they were filming and watch.
Hey Shree, I think the question you had of Robocop keeping his memories and part of his old self is what gives the plot the extra depth and staying power to be such a classic '80s action flick. ------- The fact that 40 years later seeing Murphy grapple with the transition from regular person to Cyborg still captures our attention to this day. ------- Also, Clarence Bodeker is such a great awesome classic over-the-top villain. ------- He just likes to kill, make money, and wield power. Simple yet effective.
I also look at Clarence and his gang as another form of law enforcement since they were technically employed by OCP (by the second in charge Dick Jones) to enforcement of OCP's agenda for Mega City 1 just as the police on their payroll, they were no different despite being the "criminals". Also did you notice Murphy's memories of his marriage were altered from when he was dying and when he was walking through the house as Robocop? Like maybe his marriage wasn't so rock solid, and he was remembering an idolized version, and I always liked that he and Anne didn't have some romance, yet there was very much love there. Lately I've been re-evaluating what it means to be "in love" or someone being the "love of your life" as it doesn't have to be romantic, involve physical attraction or blood relation
@Shree Nation Hey, just returning the favor, you got me to look at Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom from a different and fascinating perspective with your review of it. Like I said in my original comment, there was always something a little off about Murphy's memories of his family life to me. I saw this movie when I was 10 back in 1990, and even then I noticed it all being weird. Why was their house in such disarray, photos burned, why was context only added to his memories after becoming a machine, while going through his house, an added contextual cue that faded away as he passed through his wife's face. Paul Verhoven is pretty good at unsaid clues in these movie's, that if you think about it recontexualizes parts of the story, or at the very least opens them up to reinterpretation. And not to spoil anything, the second movie doesn't really do much to follow up on any of this aspect of Murphy's marraige unfortunately, but it had a different director with Verhoven not being involved, so that's fine, what we do get in part 2 as far as his wife is concerned is fine, I guess, Lol
OCP is employing criminals to change public opinion into allowing them to take over the police. OCP is playing both sides so they can build Delta City. Mega City 1 is a reference to Judge Dredd, which RoboCop was based on.
Somewhat disagree. The crooks were not employed to enforce OCP's agenda but rather Dick Jones (the Second in Charge) agenda. OCP's agenda would not include killing Bob Morton for example. The President of OCP wanted Crime GONE from Detroit - Delta City. Dick Jones was the one with the Criminal Connection. In all honesty I prefer it that way, I mean the President is not exactly a moral paragon (look at how he reacts to the "Glitch" at the start) but he is not an out and out evil character either. The President and OCP embody GRAY Evil (Corpo Evil) or just unfettered Capitalism , Dick Jones and Clarence embody BLACK - Evil ( Criminal Evil).
Oh man, I saw this with my dad when I was 11, and we thought it was gonna be just some Rambo bullshit. But when the satire & humanity kicked in, I knew, even at age 11, this was more intelligent than the regular macho nonsense.
If you thought THIS was an episode of *Black Mirror* check out *_Starship Troopers_* by same director as this movie, Paul Verhoeven: You’ll recognize his style for graphic violence, anti-Fascist/Capitalist rhetoric and using propagandist commercials as world setting narration! A MUST SEE! (Also, *_Total Recall_* his third masterpiece)
I watched most of his movies including his Dutch films before he came to America. He's a world reknowned filmmaker before he came to the states. Excellent filmmaker, no holds barred.
Welcome to the world of Paul Verhoeven (pronounced with U like in ‘hooves’). This director is famous for a weird combination of nudity, strong political message, blood and very black humor. If that attracts you, I recommend his magnum opus “Starship Troopers”. You laughed about the ads in this movie - “Starship Troopers” brings that to another level. P.S.: Responding to your comment at 54:37: The humour is most clearly not unintentional. Verhoeven is a Dutch director known for his leftist views; on his visit to Hollywood, he could make movies that basically no one else could pull off, and he trusted the intelligence of the viewers to find out what the movie was about.
This was my favorite reaction of this movie. You really get the point of the genius buried under the rest of the madness. You said you watched it a couple of times after your 1st watch, and I would have loved to watch your 2nd and 3rd reactions to this same movie. Certain parts can only be really understood on the runback.
There's a great visual joke during the scene where Robocop arrests Clarence - he's not hitting a man with glasses 🤓, he's hitting glasses with a man 🤣🤣🤣
Peter Weller trained with a mime teacher for 6 months to invent movement for Robocop, but the suit was late so when they tried it on, none of it worked, it was so bulky and heavy Peter could barely move.. so last minute at the start of shooting... they had to start from scratch... it shut down shooting for a week. It was gonna be a very fluid, snakelike, breakdance kind of style. They had to slow it waaaay down and make those tight accent-stops to each movement.
While I'm an unashamed fan of Paul Verhoeven much of the anti-corporate-ness was already in the script. His take on it was turning RoboCop into the tale of a modern Jesus Christ. Seriously, all of his movies are great. They can be enjoyed on their face, or they can be considered for their deeper meanings. One will never go wrong in watching a Verhoeven movie.
Regardless where the story takes place, they filmed it in Dallas, Texas. During the early bank robbery chase, you can see the distinctive Reunion Tower in the background (looks like a ball on a stick). I've driven the same road. That tall OCP office building is actually Dallas City Hall with a painting on top. The front of the building is really at a sharp angle like that, and so they didn't have to build a set for the front of the building when Robocop arrives for the final showdown. The blonde news anchor is Leeza Gibbons, who had a Dallas magazine show on WFAA-TV in the early 80's, but by the time this movie came out she was the face of a popular national show called Entertainment Tonight.
>endings that look happy but are actually dark >Dark humor >Satire of right wing politics and status quo, specially in the US that still exist to this day >Satire of brainless action movies >Extreme violence >Putting men and women in equal places >Casual nudity Welcome to Paul Verhoeven's movies, there are 2 more Hollywood movies after this, Total Recall and Starship Troopers
The girl did not die. She is in the sequel. I got to know Nancy Allen just a bit in the eighties. Her career went nuts after Dressed to Kill or Blow Out or whatever. She took it all in rather sublimely, like a kid on an old-fashioned playground. Total Recall is a very good Verhoeven film.
56:16 "What's driving me a little insane is that he's still trapped in that nightmare, isn't he? He's still _owned_ by a corporation. There is still crime, rampant in the city. They still are probably gonna go through with, uh, the police replacement thing that they're gonna do." Well, there _are_ sequels.
“Robocop” came out during an interesting time in U.S. cinema. Hollywood started satirizing yuppies, consumerism, and corporate culture more explicitly during in movies like this one, “Gremlins 2,” “They Live,” “Die Hard,” “Secret of My Success,” “Bright Lights, Big City,” and “Wall Street,” among others. However, “Robocop” might have been the funnest ride. It took a non-American director to help bring this biting satire to life, someone outside the gates with a fresh perspective. As for the Essential Verhoeven, his only other films that are must-see to me are “Total Recall” (which also has some corporate satire) and “Basic Instinct.” “Starship Troopers” satirizes the military nicely, but as sci-fi, it’s Sy-fy Channel-caliber dreck, i.e., a bunch of model-turned-actor 20-somethings running around trying to look like adults.
41:59 - Murphy's human personality resurfaced at the right time. That's why the Directive 4 protocol didn't shut him down hence him escaping. 53:10 - Robocop faked his pain scream. It was meant to lure Clarence into the reach of his USB knife.
I paused the reaction and started going through the comments for this. The movie is not unintentionally funny. The funny is meant to be there, just like the commentary on 80s corporate greed and other things it more or less predicted.
Oh My Dearest Shree...Thank You so very much for this one today! 🥰 This is one of My Most Favorite Movies of All-Time, and IMO...one of the Best Movies that has Ever been made! 👍 This first came out when I was only 5-years-old, and I have Loved & Admired RoboCop ever since. . .
@@e.d.2096 Thanks for coming today, "You're Welcome" and remember to look up Shree's Reaction to Your other Favorite Film, "2001: A Space Odyssey!" I'll see you later on Jen's Channel, I think today's Reaction is "Anchorman."
The star Peter Weller was also in another funny sci-fi movie: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. It's about a dystopian future where's no law and order. Another funny cop movie is Remo Williams. It's about a former NYC cop who learns martial arts and comes back.
oh oh, my favourite part! 50:53 if you pause EXACTLY when murphy's shots land on the windshield of the van you'll get why his gun is called the auto-9 :)
The holy trinity for Paul Verhoeven is Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers in that order. That’s the order they were made in. Deeper cuts or guilty pleasures are Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Hollow Man, in any order. Past that you have his native country films which are different. He’s a great filmmaker, you can’t go wrong.
Seeing the medical team trying to save Murphy through his eyes triggered my PTSD once. Back in 2015, I spent 7 months in hospital because of a bleed in my small bowel. I needed a unit or two of blood every other day for MONTHS. One night I fell asleep and I wake up thinking I had to sit on the throne, but I found I was way too weak to even sit up on my own, so I called for help and a bedside commode. I don't remember getting back into a normal position on the bed rather than my legs dangling uselessly over the ledge and the lights were still dim. Next thing I became aware of was I was screwing my eyes shut as I had been in so much pain and I thought I was having an accident on my bed, but no, it turned out to be ALL blood. It's horrifying to know exactly what is happening to you (dying) and not have anything you can do about it except trust those who are trying to save you. Once I was stable enough to be moved into the ICU, I asked the lead nurse of the Rapid Response Team that saved me how close I had been to dying. He was reluctant to answer but I convinced him to spill, and he said when my nurse had come into take my blood pressure, the machine failed to find one 4 times so they had to find it manually. He said when that happens, it could have gone either way, and had it not been for the fact that I had been playing tennis like a fanatic as I had when I was 19-21, which at 32 put me in the best shape of my life. My resting heart rate was 40. The nurse said had my heart stopped, they doubt I'd have been revived. I needed 7 units of whole blood, another 4 or blood products like platelets and the like. The first friend who came to visit me after I let everyone know what happened and I was alive was then and is still an EMT and when I told him what the nurse had told me about right on the edge, my EMT buddy confirmed it. I know it was PTSD as I had seen the movie several times and was never bothered by that scene... Well one day I was watching it again and out of nowhere, when seeing it through his eyes really brought back those memories I want to forget. It hit me like a Mack Truck. I broke down and cried and it almost felt like I was still back there fighting to stay alive. On a different note, This movie was an excellent satire. Robocop was also a Christ figure and he was murdered, and resurrected, and "walked" on water near the end after That 70s Drug Lord, flipped his car and shot Officer Lewis and had a ton of steel beams dropped on him.
Hey Shree, When Clarence gets arrested, he suggested to the director, Verhoven. How about I spit blood and say "Just give me my f-ing phone call". ------- Verhoven smiled and said Yes! This is sick! I Like it!". --------- For sure Director Verhoeven loved to make the action as over the top as possible, just like in Total Recall.
Robocop is kind of how Europeans saw American at that time. A movie like Independence Day is how American sees it's self. I saw this in theatres aged 15. This was a big hit in the UK at the time. It is a reflection of future shock that the Republican party is going full OCP at the moment. The story does address more corporate mentality and emotional fallout in Robocop 2. Not as well executed but still worth a watch. Weller developed a full set of 'robo' movements for the character over months. 6 weeks before filming, the armour was scrapped in favour of the one we see in the movie, forcing him to re-work all the movements in a short time. Director said that he regretted doing that to Weller. It's a good movie that if you just want an action movie, it has it. If you look a little deeper it's insightful and cutting. 10/10
OMFG Shree I adore you! ❤️ your reactions are top level as I always tell you. I've loved this movie for over 30 years and it's got so many dark and deep levels added in comedy and action and satire. Practically Orwellian. And you've just given the perfect commentary on this epic classic. Thanks so much. I've missed you my dear 😁 peace ✌️
Omg thank you so much Andy as always for your kind words and your support ❤ I'm so glad you had a good time and Orwellian is definitely the perfect way to describe this film! Missed you too ✌
You're right Shree about this movie and it's political message. Paul Verhoeven was born in Holland in 1938 and being a young boy during the Nazi occupation he saw first hand the horrors of fascism. His most famous American sci-fi/action movies from the 80s and 90s all had an under current about American society's flirtation with fascism through capitalism. In fact, right around the time his sci-fi epic "Starship Troopers" came out in the late 90s he said in an interview he saw little difference in the fascist society of Nazi Germany and the capitalistic society of modern-day America. Bold words, but I tend to agree as an American myself. The U.S. has never really been in danger of being overtaken by a leftist, socialist movement but slowly turning to the far right of the political spectrum and secretly embracing fascism.
In many of his movies Verhoeven does bitting social commentary. In Starship Troopers it's that a militaristic society will eventually turn fascist, and here it's extreme consumerism. Also, he is known for not shying away from either gore nor nudity and his movies are pretty violent, but there also a ton of dark humor as well. Others of his American movies worth the watch are Total Recall, Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct. Seriously, the scene where Robocop shoots the rapist in the nuts through the woman dress is super badass. Also, props to Ronnie Cox and Kurtwood Smith (the dad in That 70's Show) who do wonderfully sleazy and ruthless vilains while Miguel Ferrer does a wonderfully devious, coke sniffing protagonist. Peter Weller is great as Robocop.
@@LordVolkov Lol, the most over the top eidiculous sex scene ever and Elizabeth Berkley has been ridiculed for her over the top acting, but let's remember that Verhoeven always injects social commentary in his movies so her performance might have been on his demand. And let's be honest, a completely naked Elizabeth Berkley is not something any man will ever complaint about 😉
@@davidmeir9348 I unironically enjoy Showgirls as the satire it is. It's a ridiculous lambasting of 'sexy movies' on a level of parody that the Zucker brothers could never comprehend.
This is quite literally the best reaction i've seen to this movie, not only are you not scared to call him a cyborg but you're not scared to understand that he's soul trapped, massive respect, my dumb ass works on ships at sea and people like you give me actual hope for humanity (plz dont feel like you need to respond if you don't want to, your reaction was damn good otherwise :P
@@ShreeNation Keep being great, also as a quick asside, lots of people wonder why criminals don't just shoot him in the mouth? It wouldn't work, that's not actually his face, it's synth skin stretched over a metal skull that's made to look like his og face and mouth, organic looking eyes too (ocp thought it would make ppl more comfortable in the event that he had to take his helmet off in piblic X_X). The only things that are left are MOST of his brain, a partial spine, a partial nervous system and partial digestive tract. You were totally right in that the creator of this was kinda horrified by his own story, but felt it needed to be told, sry for the rant lol.
Glad to see a deep analysis about Robocop, most people just enjoy the action and don't care about the deep issues in this movie; corruption, greed, and, IMHO, the most important thing; the loss of humanity, when you said his soul was trapped in this thing you just nailed it 😉
I really enjoyed your reaction for this movie, and to answer your question about RoboCop's armor....its titanium laminated with Kevlar..VERY strong and tough. I like this movie, for the fact that OCP tried to control RoboCop, but he didn't allow them to control him, plus he solved his own murder..power of the mind.
Great you mentioned his soul being trapped in a robotic body. Paul Verhoeven mentioned the exact moment his soul was "awakened" was when he remembered his murder.
There are so many great things about this movie. I was 14 when it came out, and my grandfather took me to see it. He was into classic science fiction (Isaac Asimov, Poul Anderson, etc), and he HATED Robocop. Me? I couldn't get enough. It works on so many levels. It's a fantastic science fiction film, it's a great action movie, it's a tragic revenge story, and it's an absolutely hilarious satire.
When Omni Consumer Products goes bankrupcy, its either bought by Wyland-Yutani or Umbrella Corporation... That is my feeling about it. But on the film: I love this film. There´s so much more in this film that just action and explosions. That is why I rate Verhoeven so highly. Especially his "trilogy" of Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers.
They did call for backup but they were gonna be there in 15 minutes or so. He recognized him from the line "Dead or alive, you're coming with me" (which has become an iconic line today). To be fair, If I saw a real life cyborg as a kid I would think that would be freaking awesome too! 😃😉 This is one of my favorite movies, love it! Shree, you need to check out the trailer for the upcoming Robocop: Rouge City video game, it looks awesome & it has Peter Weller voicing Robocop himself! 😃 You need to watch Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall 🙂 Basic Instinct is a good movie & Starship Troopers has its moments. Also, ironically the secretary became Kurtwood Smith's (Clarence Boddicker) wife. The remake sucks, not worth watching, lame PG-13 piece of sh*t! The 2nd sequel still have some pretty cool gore moments & action, but it's not good. The problem is the script, which got heavily rewritten. The 3rd movie is ok, but it's very tame & not good either, in fact Peter Weller turned that movie down to be in David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch instead, which was a much better move & you should react to it, it's really good 🙂
6:55, its somewhat played for gallows humor here. But who in their right mind would have a fully loaded prototype inside of an office building for a demo? Good grief Dick Jones and McNamara's team REALLY didn't think this one out.
So the real estate thing. You'd think a real estate agency would clean things up before trying to sell the house. So my headcanon is in this world, you rent the robo-realtor thingy and it's up to you to fix the house up. As long as they're getting money for the rental, they're not pressed to sell the house.
Greatest movie of all time. The reason why he says "police officers dont strike" because as you saw in the previous scene calling the lawyer and his client scumbacks showing he believes in higher moral duty to the people.
Hi Shree,my good friend Tom Hoffman recommended me to your channel for this reaction. I looking forward to more reaction videos from you . If Tom says I should be here, well that's good enough for me. I just subscribed so look for my comments in the future. By the way I do make an appearance in this, just thought you should know. I'm actually more bark than bite
Welp, you got a sub for a fantastic take.. well done. So refreshing, intelligent review. So grateful to watch a review where the person totally gets it. You missed a couple things, but so forgivable considering how sharp you are. THANK YOU
Great reaction. What this depicted was Murphy was a cop at heart he wanted to make the place safe for people. Nancy was a great female character she was strong and compassionate. She saw Robocop as he truly was a MAN, not a machine. Also, the computer didn't override him it just reminded him of deep down who is he when it said Uphold the law. Murphy still had free choice to kill. Murphy chose to let him live and remained a cop. Also, yes OCP bought the cops, but cops like Sergeant Read and Nancy were cops to the bone. The didn't give a crap about OCP. You will see more of Sergeant Read (who I loved as a character in these as he was good mentor to the other cops). Overall, this movie is about if man is mixed with machine do we treat them like hardware. As you saw Nancy didn't think so and that is how she got through to Murphy. She cared about him as a man.
The line "Bitches, leave" wasn't in script, it was improvise by Clarence Boddicker actor. But director liked this line so much that he called the girls, who played hookers, "bitches" for the rest of the filming.
Something maby people don't know about Robocop is that it was heavily inspired/influenced by the British comic book character Judge Dredd (started in 1977 and still going). Robocop even uses some of Dredd's phrases, such as "Your move creep", "Dead or alive, you're coming with me", "Stay out of trouble" and "Come quietly or there will be trouble". So far, the most "true" Judge Dredd movie is the 2012 "Dredd". The 1995 "Judge Dredd" has more of the comic's aesthetic, but lacks it's soul (quickly becoming a by-the-numbers Stallone movie).
it´s funny and has some good scenes..... but Dredd(2012) did blow it out of the water.. . Dredd has a lot more nods towards reality, and still catches the Judge Dredd comic book feel...without geting too much into it.... sadly there is no sequel....
At 45:24 The receptionist (Joan Pirkle) is Kurtwood Smith's wife. They've been married for 35 years. They actually started dating during the making of RoboCop.🤩
An important aspect of Robocop is the lead-poisoning. Because of the leaded fuel, everyone in the 1980s was going crazy. Scientists theorise that this is what caused the huge spike in crime rate, school bullying, etc. Movies from that era are sort of unique, because they are like time-capsules.
it was the writers (Ed Neumier & especially Michael Minor) that hated "corporate greed" and corporate fascism & so they incorporated this into their brilliant story, (which can be found on the making of retrospective) , every so often comes a film reflecting & commenting on the times we live in, and this was life in the real life 1980s, greed & corruption, with NO regulation unlike before, and where that inevitably leads.
Total Recall and Starship Troopers are by the same director and are great movies The actor who plays Dick Jones is in Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 with Eddie Murphy he has a totally different character in these movies... he is also in Total Recall and has a similar character to this movie
I would love to do a RoboCop cosplay, down to the opening thigh compartments and sliding gun holsters, but that would be time consuming and expensive to replicate.
Ultimately, it’s about Murphy’s humanity being stolen from him by a corporation and his quest to get it back. That’s why it ends with him saying his name, he has finally taken his humanity back.
i like Robocop 2 also, it was directed by Irvin Kirshner who made the Empire Strikes Back, i think George was busy making MIdnight Madness (1980) hope you can watch that one too Shree, it's really funny
Cyberpunk (which this is an awesome example of) is an extension of the noir genre. The idea is for social dysfunction to be represented in a beautiful way. It can be thought of as a distillation of Westerns, Samurai epics, or knight adventures.
the scene where the baddies get the assault cannons? the explosions were so close that the actors got sprayed with glass and other fragments earning them an extra 500 dollars for stunt pay.
Peter Weller no doubt was sweating in the parking structure shooting scene. The full suit was so hot that I think he passed out a few times and in just a few minutes. In some scenes he was only wearing the top part of the suit. Eventually they had to make an air conditioner of sorts so he could actually wear the suit the suit without dieing from heat stroke. The backup earlier may have been delayed because Murphy was a candidate for the Robocop program, he just didn't know it. That is why he was sent to the worst district, to maybe get killed so they could put him in the machine. There was basically the brain and enough organs in there to keep it alive. But since the brain uses about 20% of the body's oxygen and nutrients, there would have been a fair amount. Cyborgs and brains in the machine have been around for a while, too many to list really. One of the more ghoulish was in the Shadowrun roleplaying game, a game set in a future of high tech where magic had returned. They were called "cyber zombies". In the game, a player could get all kinds of cybernetics up to a certain limit, the closer you got to the limit, the more of your "essence" you lost. A cyberzombie used magic to go beyond that limit. Very expensive, very nasty magic. The brain had to be constantly stimulated by a special device to remind it it was still alive because the soul was trying to escape the magical bindings keeping it there. This is one of the few game settings to consider that. Most other had some kind of rating for sanity or the like.
I love your Sci Fi reactions. Glad you enjoyed Robocop. My dad took us to watch this at the movies. I dont know if he knew it was rated R. LOL. IIt is still one of my favorites. Love the satire because it makes it more realistic. Real life is satirical. I highly recommend you watch Verhovens masterpiece "Total Recall". Its my favorite. Its kind of Blade Runner on Mars. Blade Runner being my favorite movie of all time. Phillip K. Dick Science fiction stories where the soucres for both Blade Runner and Total Recall.

I was 17 when Robocop came out. Seeing it in the theater was AWESOME!!!
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
Fun Fact: Nancy Allen first arrived on set when Paul Verhoeven was shooting the deliberately cheesy sitcom "It's Not My Problem" which appears on television screens throughout the film.
The genital shot is such instant karma lol! And Weller is basically working like most of us at home, wearing just his underwear 🙃
LOL! 🤣
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
The one with Nancy Allen, lol 🤣😜 & love how they came up with the genital part at that moment, that was a great change! 🙂👍🤘👌
@@ShreeNationlol😂
That fictional sitcom predicted reality TV like nobody's business.
Starting Paul Verhoeven trifecta of sci-fi commentary/satire on society, I see. Now you need Total Recall and Starship Troopers to complete it. Then they remade Robocop into a PG-13 sludge with no edge, wit or idea what it wanted to say.
I can't wait!
The 2013 was trying to say something about automated warfare (ie drone strikes), but completely fumbled it and wasted some solid talent in Kinneman and Haley.
Couldn’t agree more! Those Verhoeven movies are amazing!

Thank you for mentioning _Showgirls_. It really is a misunderstood masterpiece.
Thank you for the recommendations, will check them all out 😍
@@ShreeNation recommend robocop 2 it’s a good movie 😊
Robocop 2 was pretty cool too, just skip Robocop 3.
I'll add Flesh+Blood to the list, released in 1985, a movie happening during medieval age, with the great Rutger Hauer, a very realistic movie during this era, I let you imagine how brutal this one is...

you are most company hater i think

and he save so many inccent life too (if he just human being he couldnt)
i think this context borrow from bible (like passion of christ)
so ocp is unethical company and greedy yes i agree
and murphy is not deserve die like this
but also his sacrifice make hole new brave world
and new chapter of detroit
its really painful to watch
but this is the life we living
paul want expression that massage
While they were filming this scene, Paul Verhoeven asked one of the EMTs that was acting in the scene if it were really possible to save someone in that bad of condition and they told him that they had saved people in far worse shape than what Murphy was in.
Wow! The human body truly is incredible 😲
The doctor of the ER team in that scene was an actual ER tech.
Thank you.
Much appreciated 🥰
Who’s the other one?
ED-209, the 'future of policing', is nothing but armor, guns, and a menacing voice 😅 It has no way to detain a suspect or even make an arrest... Verhoeven's satire is always on point 👍
Corporate greed, police brutality, commercialism, and even the viewer's love of gore/carnage are all taken shots at in Robocop.
The lawless will comply! They have 20 seconds! That means YOU TO.....Patrick!
Agreed!
Patrick...I do hope you know that I'm joking 😅
Also, notice that the ED-209 wasn't programmed to threaten a person pointing a gun at a civilian. It only activates when you point the gun at ED-209, showing that protecting the innocent isn't a priority.
@Shawn That is such a great point!
Thank you for explaining. What a sick, psychopathic corporation!
There's a deleted scene where there's news footage of Lewis recovering in a hospital bed.
"The movie had in fact an happy ending," No, she is right stating that it is a false happy ending. Murphy regains nothing.
I see, good catch!
Hey Shree, I can remember it like yesterday, when Robocop came out. The theater lobby had a full blown 7-foot version of ED-209 staring you down. -------- It was so next level marketing, so super cool. Ed -209 was definitely the future of urban unrest passification. Love it.
Love that!
I don't know about the 6000 SUX sounding like a sports car. I always read it as "Six-thousand Sucks." It just sounds like a parody name to me.
Wow, Weller has gone through so much for this role, in the end it paid off and gave us his wonderful portrayal of Robocop! 👏

Clarence Bodicker also thinks all the kids in the 70s are on dope. This can be cured with his foot in your @$$!
"This movie is so unintentionally funny..." Aaaahm... Girl. Those are COMPLETELY AND 100% INTENTIONAL... Please, try to keep up 😅
35:25. Wow.... a dvd. That's cool.
"Let's waste some time together."
>Watching the original Robocop is never a waste of time. I'd buy that for a dollar!
Wow I didn't think of that, they never showed us his true relationship with his wife. Thanks for pointing it out! ❤ 👏
It's called Delta City
Can't wait! 😍
Love this director already, can't wait to check out Starship Troopers! 😍
This was my favorite reaction of this movie. You really get the point of the genius buried under the rest of the madness. You said you watched it a couple of times after your 1st watch, and I would have loved to watch your 2nd and 3rd reactions to this same movie. Certain parts can only be really understood on the runback.
Thank you so much ❤🙏
There's a great visual joke during the scene where Robocop arrests Clarence - he's not hitting a man with glasses 🤓, he's hitting glasses with a man 🤣🤣🤣
Oh...that is Clever!!! (LOL) 👍
Hah!
They had to slow it waaaay down and make those tight accent-stops to each movement.
btw, clarence and barbara @45:22 went on to be a happy couple and marry IRL :D
Aww 😊
It was a happy ending, Murphy reclaimed his humanity. Him saying "Murphy" with a smile let us know that he has accepted his new life.
Thanks for letting me know 😍

Welcome to Paul Verhoeven's movies, there are 2 more Hollywood movies after this, Total Recall and Starship Troopers
One of the bloodiest, goriest and most violent classic 80's popcorn flicks. You've just got to love it.
56:16 "What's driving me a little insane is that he's still trapped in that nightmare, isn't he? He's still _owned_ by a corporation. There is still crime, rampant in the city. They still are probably gonna go through with, uh, the police replacement thing that they're gonna do."
Well, there _are_ sequels.
Before you die, your life flashes before your eyes, this process is called living 😉
You were such a delight with this. You absolutely nail the take Paul Verhoeven was going for and you really appreciate what this movie accomplished.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed 🥰
41:59 - Murphy's human personality resurfaced at the right time. That's why the Directive 4 protocol didn't shut him down hence him escaping.
53:10 - Robocop faked his pain scream. It was meant to lure Clarence into the reach of his USB knife.
Shree, you could have let the music play at the very end after he said his name , it helped staple it in that he now has a consciousness
It's a pretty smart movie. Nice to see people who see it for what it is. Also, it's definitely supposed to have funny moments.
I paused the reaction and started going through the comments for this. The movie is not unintentionally funny. The funny is meant to be there, just like the commentary on 80s corporate greed and other things it more or less predicted.
Starship Troopers is the second best satire in Paul Verhoven’s verve, and Total Recall is his best Sci-Fi. Definitely watch both.

The holy trinity for Paul Verhoeven is Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers in that order. That’s the order they were made in. god, that's a one-liner that should be in an actual action movie lol
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry you went through that, and that this movie triggered those painful memories! 💔 I'm glad you are alright now!
Brb, going to binge on everything Paul Verhoven has made after watching this 👏
@@ShreeNation Now that's some good binging.
@@ShreeNation Me, patiently waiting for Shree to film a reaction to Showgirls 😏😁
@@LordVolkov
Lol, the most over the top eidiculous sex scene ever and Elizabeth Berkley has been ridiculed for her over the top acting, but let's remember that Verhoeven always injects social commentary in his movies so her performance might have been on his demand.
Shree I love you so much. To say the Ed-209 debut was the worst power point presentation of all time is HILARIOUS.
I was speechless.
😄❤
well the way, Ed209 points really has power...
Thank you so much, that means a lot 💖❤
When this came out, we laughed our asses off when the big robot fell down the stairs too.
Congratulations. You just watched one of the best movies ever made.
Thank you so much 🙏
Great you mentioned his soul being trapped in a robotic body.
Subtle detail, the more Murphy comes back, the less his voice is digitized. A subtle clue of him regaining his humanity.
Great catch!!
I love how bookworm stopped to grab his textbooks as he fleed the gas station. A true scholar. What a man.
Chad 😎
This is one of my favorite movies, love it! Shree, you need to check out the trailer for the upcoming Robocop: Rouge City video game, it looks awesome & it has Peter Weller voicing Robocop himself! 😃
You need to watch Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall 🙂 Basic Instinct is a good movie & Starship Troopers has its moments.
The 3rd movie is ok, but it's very tame & not good either, in fact Peter Weller turned that movie down to be in David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch instead, which was a much better move & you should react to it, it's really good 🙂
Will definitely check out the trailer to Rouge City :)
6:55, its somewhat played for gallows humor here. But who in their right mind would have a fully loaded prototype inside of an office building for a demo? Good grief Dick Jones and McNamara's team REALLY didn't think this one out.
15:34, that isn't the chief of Police. He is simply a desk Sergeant for that particular police precinct.
So the real estate thing. You'd think a real estate agency would clean things up before trying to sell the house. So my headcanon is in this world, you rent the robo-realtor thingy and it's up to you to fix the house up. As long as they're getting money for the rental, they're not pressed to sell the house.
Wow, that makes sense 😲
Greatest movie of all time. The reason why he says "police officers dont strike" because as you saw in the previous scene calling the lawyer and his client scumbacks showing he believes in higher moral duty to the people.
"What a disastrous PowerPoint," is my favorite description of the ED-209 boardroom scene. 🤣
😁
Still one of the most brutal deaths in cinematic history. I mean they took Murphy out like a mob boss.
True, it was horrifying.
Hostage taker, "Kiss the mayor's @$$ goodbye!"
RoboCop: "No kiss yours goodbye."

@Breath of Fresh Air most people miss the humor and satire, the warnings of corporate greed. She did not
Great reaction.
Haha, love it!
Masterpiece of a movie.
They DID call for backup, they are so understaffed that they could not get there in time.
Im new to the Channel but I LOVE seeing people watch this Masterpiece for the first time! Great Reaction, "Now Give the Gal a Hand!!!" 😆
Glad to have you here :) Thanks for watching!
45:17 In real life the guy playing Clarence and the actress playing the secretary are married with kids. They met on the set of this movie.
At 45:24
The receptionist (Joan Pirkle) is Kurtwood Smith's wife. They've been married for 35 years. They actually started dating during the making of RoboCop.🤩
Aww how sweet 🥰
I know its already been commented but the three Paul Verhoven sci fi classics to watch are Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers
Wow, I had no idea! Thanks for letting me know 😮
it was the writers (Ed Neumier & especially Michael Minor) that hated "corporate greed" and corporate fascism & so they incorporated this into their brilliant story, (which can be found on the making of retrospective) , every so often comes a film reflecting & commenting on the times we live in, and this was life in the real life 1980s, greed & corruption, with NO regulation unlike before, and where that inevitably leads.
Fun fact.
That suit took ten hours to get into.
Also, if you pay attention, the more humanity he regains, the less robotic his voice becomes.
Wow!
Total Recall and Starship Troopers are by the same director and are great movies
The actor who plays Dick Jones is in Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 with Eddie Murphy he has a totally different character in these movies... he is also in Total Recall and has a similar character to this movie
Can't wait!
Your remarks about how influential US police is is way scarier than the corruption depicted in the movie
Peter Weller became an art history professor but he continues to work as an actor.
I would love to do a RoboCop cosplay, down to the opening thigh compartments and sliding gun holsters, but that would be time consuming and expensive to replicate.
And probably very hot to wear during summers.
@@ShreeNation I have no doubt about that, unless I find a way to rig a fan inside the helmet or something
Will do :)
Cyberpunk (which this is an awesome example of) is an extension of the noir genre. The idea is for social dysfunction to be represented in a beautiful way. It can be thought of as a distillation of Westerns, Samurai epics, or knight adventures.
Wow 😍
the scene where the baddies get the assault cannons? the explosions were so close that the actors got sprayed with glass and other fragments earning them an extra 500 dollars for stunt pay.
I saw Robocop about 20 years ago, and it was much better than I thought it would be.
Omg, I feel so bad for Peter Weller having to go through all that :(
I love your Sci Fi reactions.
Thank you so much ❤ Will definitely watch Total Recall!
4:55, OCP isn't privatizing the US Marines or any of the US military. They are simply making themselves the go to provider of military hardware.
