It's a sarcastic line that isn't referring to himself. They paint being a working class hero as something to strive for but that's exactly as far as they want you to go while staying in your box, the top of the working class but still just that, working class. That's at least how I see it, rather than john Lennon saying "I'm great, I'm great"
