  • When I was a kid in 5th Grade, in 1973 I remember we had a science fair in Groveport Elementary School. For me it was a no-brainer to do my project on Dinosaurs, huge fan. I remember having some toys set up, with information on the creatures. I had a stuffed alligator my brothers had given me (had no idea where they got it) and I created a creature called a Diatryma with a wire hanger (yes, wire hangers :)), foil on the "skeleton" to give it a bit of shape and covered that with clay for the final form.
They had us all set up in the sports hall/lunchroom and teachers from the high school and I recall OSU walk around and ask us questions on our chosen field of study (I recall one student did his on firefighters, since his dad was a fireman for Groveport, and another who did his on photosynthesis; both did incredible jobs). When all was said and done, we three were chosen for first place in our respective fields.
I still have that ribbon and school brochure 51 years later.
But let me tell you, I would have killed (figuratively, of course :)) to see this exhibit at COSI back then, if they had had it. I mean, a full skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, various bones and fossils, a stegosaur, a Triceratops, various skulls of other creatures and then, a room demonstrating the eventual evolution of certain dinosaurs to today's birds. This was something we had no idea of back when I was doing my little project. I mean, the Diatryma was akin to modern ostriches and other flightless birds, and we knew of the archeopteryx back then, incorrectly thinking it was a bird when it was actually a dinosaur with feathers.
But this exhibit is loaded with examples of skeletons of small dinosaurs and ancient birds with feathers, and a couple of large dinos with feathers. If you or your family are remotely interested in dinosaurs, then this exhibit is the place to be.
If you are interested in the Titanic exhibit, the rest of COSI is included in the cost of a ticket. If you aren't interested in the Titanic you can save money off the cost of admission and still see the dinosaur exhibit. Either way, it's a great way to experience science and history, and perhaps inspire that budding scientist or archaeologist to go further with their learning.
