  • It was the spring of 1974 and residents of the Alaska panhandle town of Sitka woke to a surprise. 3400 foot mount Edgecumbe, towering over the city, was belching thick, black smoke. Little did the worried residents know that local resident Porky Bickar was following in an ancient tradition.

Henry the VIII was supposed to have been so fed up that he ordered his Fool to be put to death. Though in apprecation of past service he asked the Fool how he wished to die.The Fool thought for a while and replied, Old Age.

A variant on that tale is Giulio Cesare Croce's Bertoldo. The Duke sentences Berttoldo the jester to death by hanging. Bertoldo asks for one last wish; this is granted. His wish is to choose tree from which he is to be hanged. He never found the right tree before he died at the age of 83.

The only real April Fool's joke I ever played was on my mother by causing her to go into labor on April 1, weeks earlier than planned, and then further messing with her by not being born for another 36 hours, on April 2. She always said I was her favorite April Fool's joke.

April fool's day holds a very special meaning to my family. My great great grandfather John Benjamin Lockhart fought for the Confederacy. He was captured by the Yankees at the battle of Vicksburg. They shipped him down to New Orleans where he was held prisoner in the old Federal Mint that had been converted to house POWs as laborers. Having access to tools, John managed to hide a chisel in his clothes and sneak it back to his bunk. He used the chisel over the next several weeks to work on the mortar between the bricks 🧱 and create a hole in the wall. March 31, 1864, after lights out, he finished making the hole large enough for himself to fit through. He kept the chisel and grabbed most of his other personal items and prepared for his escape. It was after midnight when his chance came and he bolted for freedom. He almost got away totally undetected. But as he reached the edge of the compound he heard a guard shout out the alarm. "Prisoner Escape! Prisoner Escape!" Then another voice in the compound yelled back, "April Fool's! You didn't trick me!" John kept running and succeeded in his getaway. He returned to his home and family in the West Florida Parrishs of Louisiana and sat out the remainder of the war as was then the honorable practice. John swore until his dying day that he hadn't planned for the escape to happen on April Fool's Day. It was all just a stroke of good luck. Official military records were doctored to cover up the embarrassed Yankee's mistake. He's shown as being released at the end of hostilities. But everyone knows that he was back home before the end of the war and we still have the chisel with "U.S." stamped on the side as proof of what actually happened.

Family history stories are the best. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, my dad, who'd been in the National Guard and then, when his three-year enlistment was up, in a new group called Army of the United States. Congress extended the Regular Army, the National Guard, and Selective Services enlistments for 18 months but nothing was said about the A of the US. Dad's enlistment had ended on 30 November 1941, but he couldn't be released until this point was decided. Finally, they decided that the 18-month extension did not apply to men in the A of the US. His new discharge date was 6 December 1941. He served from 7 December through the end of the war, fighting in the Pacific. Not quite an April Fools Day joke, but a story my dad told everytime he heard anyone saying things like "I'm so short, I have to look up to look down."

@@davidstoyanoff actually not. My grandfather died when I was a toddler. I heard it from my Aunt Inez Caldwell and my Grandmother Lockhart as well as my Dad. I'm the one who started the tradition of the March 31 story telling. My father mounted the chisel on a nice plaque and engraved a brass plate with the date and a short description about the origin of the chisel. The last time I saw it was when my Dad gave it to my oldest cousin for safe keeping.

The hands down most famous April Fools prank here in Sweden occured way back in 1962 when the state television aired a PSA on how you could watch color TV on your non-color set by strapping a nylon sock over the glass. The best one from Denmark was a news report in 1983 about chocolate easter eggs with real, living ducklings inside.
It was supposedly a new production from a chocolate manufacturer in Århus, with financial support from the government and EU because it was a job creation project.
Animal welfare activists protested fiercely, said the report.
And they showed footage of chocolate eggs with cute little ducklings in them.
"Isn't it dangerous for the ducklings?" asked the reporter. "No no!" answered the manufacturer, "the chocolate eggs has air holes in them. The ducklings can breathe easily. We can send them to the end of the world."

A college friend of mine used to love to prank me every April 1. The last straw came when he called me at 2am and told me our friends had had a fire and told me everyone was going over to help them. Half way over I realized 2 things: 1) last I heard he was in California, and 2) it was April 1. I went by their house and of course there had been no fire. I had a year to plan my revenge. During that year, he was dumped by the love of his life "Ann Smith." Come next April 1 I called the operator and placed a collect call to anyone to my friend in CA. The operator asked who was calling and I said, "Ann Smith." She was doubtful, but made the call anyway. My friend answered and when the operator asked if he would accept the call from "Ann Smith" there was a joyous "YES, YES, OF COURSE." "April Fool A**hole" came my first words. There was a long silence, then, "Stay right there, I'm coming to kill you." If I weren't laughing so hard, I'd not have had to ask him to repeat himself. It was about then I heard the operator drop out of the call. It took him a decade before he pranked me again, and never again at 2am.

I moved to Sitka the following year, fell in love with the place, the people and the man who brought me there, and stayed for 20 years. I knew Porky, my husband had gone to school there with his sons, and yes he was quite a character. The volcano spouting all that smoke was only one of many he pulled over the years. The last years I was there I drove tour bus and that was a favorite story for all of us drivers to share. I still have the newspaper clipping with a photo of it from the Sitka Sentinal that we drivers would carry on our tours to pass around, especially on rainy days when the volcano was hidden by clouds. Porky didnt get off scott free however. He got a hefty fine for polluting and had to clean it all up. Which of course he did. But he said that every dime it took was well worth it. You know, it's kind of funny to think how many pranks become part of different sectors. Mechanics, masons, radio operators, farmers and more. In my time in the military as an armored vehicle mechanic I've seen some pranks that can be funny. Checking an armored vehicle's armor for "soft" spots by tapping with a hammer. Sending new guys for muffler bearing oil when a diesel engine shows signs of engine blow by in the exhaust, which is normal to a point, or even sending commo guys for a can of squelch to fix the radio. Sending a newby for the fence stretcher for barbwire fences being put in. The list can go on forever honestly. It's just funny how these pranks transcend generations of the people pulling them and they keep being pulled.

They demonstrated the effect by plugging in various electric appliances into outlets installed in tree trunks. It was so believable that a California Power executive, thinking the energy shortage had been solved by this new green energy, called the producers for more information. Sadly, it was a prank, the trees had just grown around electric boxes installed too close to the tree.

This is a rather famous one from my home town, San Diego, CA. I just so happened to be listening to them that morning. At least that radio station can honestly say, they paid for their humorous in-digressions. Another stunt that they pulled was a live concert the next year up in the back county. Mind you half the musicians they were playing were either dead or dead.
A disc jockey for radio station KGB-FM in San Diego, California, went on the air on April 1, 1993, and told listeners the space shuttle Discovery would be landing at a small airport nearby instead of Edwards Air Force Base. As a result, over 1000 people crowded tiny Montgomery Field, backing up traffic and prompting hundreds of children to miss school. In fact, Discovery had yet to even depart from Kennedy Space Center. (In addition, Montgomery Field had a 12,000 pound weight limit for aircraft. The Discovery weighed roughly 170,000 pounds.) A furious police department billed the station for the manpower needed to redirect traffic.

I would really like you to talk about George Seldon, he patented the "automobile" which caused all the early auto manufacturers to pay him a royalty for every car they built. Except Ford who refused. They went to court and eventually won and changed the patent procedure to be more specific in their patenting procedure. It’s a very interesting story

Another layer of that joke is that there is a real plant called marsh mallow, although marshmallows, the confection, generally do not contain any marsh mallow, the plant. The marsh mallow plant may have been part of the recipe for marshmallows at some time in the past, although I’ve never seen any period documentation of this.

The problem of legitimate news on April 1st - on April 1st 2016 my mom texted me that she'd bought a Tesla, this being when Teslas were all high-end luxury cars far out of her budget (though she did really think they were cool). I immediately thought it was a prank, responding with something like "Ha ha good one!" She had no idea what I was talking about, not even considering it was April Fools day. Eventually we got it all cleared up - It was legitimate, she'd put a refundable deposit on the newly announced more affordable Model 3, which wouldn't arrive for two and a half years.

Never heard of the Swiss Spaghetti Tree before. The young women pickin' that spaghetti were obviously trying not to smile.
Amusingly enough, I once grew a type of Chinese bean that grew up to three feet long. Several of these climbing beans grew up into the branches of a tree that stood at the edge of my garden and, you guessed it, produced over a hundred yard-long beans which hung down like..... Hmmm, I can't think of a good simile.
My very rural (ahem) neighbors didn't know what to think of it. None of them would try any of this strange and possibly dangerous new vegetable. Curiously, only the tree-climbing beans were edible.
The ones on the trellises were tough and stringy. I think the shade provided by the tree was what made the difference between having tender beans and having green shoe-laces.

Back in the 90s Discover magazine put prank articles in their April issues. One that fooled me was the story of hot-headed moles that lived in Antarctica. They used their hot heads to melt tunnels in the snow under penguins. The penguins would sink under the snow and be eaten by the moles. I actually believed this was true until the next April issue. It's not often you're caught out on your research, Lance, but I spotted two things...
    1) Charles IX of France didn't do anything in 1434 since he wasn't born! (He became King in 1560. The typically 16th century costume should have shown you the approximate date.)
    2) Geoffrey Chaucer didn't live in the 13th Century, but the 14th. (Now that you certainly should have known!)

According to one French instructor I had many many many years ago, the modern April Fool's Day is pretty much associated of course with the Vernal Equinox, but also, with the conversion from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, because of the # of days that were "lost" on the calendar with the changeover. Dunno how much truth there is in that, but it's worth considering. Ah and reference to Charles IX moving the start of the year to Jan 1 sorta might have a tie to it, as the old new year dating back to the the Roman Empire was tied to the vernal equinox. That's why the months of September, October, November, and December, are months 9, 10, 11, and 12 according to their names.
Maybe all these traditions combined. Who knows.
