  • Five days after moving in, we find mysterious and magical things in our very old townhouse in Amboise, France. We also make a fabulous brocante haul. If you love old houses, antiques, and all things French, come along on our adventure! We're a Texan couple restoring a maison bourgeoise and relocating to the Loire Valley of France.

Welcome to France! Amboise is such a charming city. My husband and I moved to Rennes, France, in 2006. Still here and still loving the life we have built. FYI: there are several Facebook groups for American expats living in France. We found these groups and the information they provide invaluable as we were learning to navigate life here, especially the first several years. I wish you all kinds of joy as you settle in to your new home.

I'm from Ireland and spent a year just outside Rennes (a great city) back in the 90's restoring my parents then holiday house. They retired and moved there full time about 12years ago and they now live in Chateaubriant.

Hi from Blois ! My dad is a cabinetmaker/carpenter (ébéniste to be exact !). If you want some advise about the house and her story, let me know ! I’m sure he would love to help discover more about the art/painting of the house, and can show you around the best place to renovate this kind of house. He did the same in Blois on a typical Loir Et Cher farmhouse 😊

It's a very intriguing house, lots of features looking like they are very ancient but showing dates starting early 20th century, could have been a reminiscence of a Renaissance house, as all the castles and great homes in the Loire valley are from that period.

    8bre is Oct-ober
    9bre is Nov-ember
Xbre is Dec-ember. Roman numeral ten. Hope this makes sense to you! Bonne chance!

unless you have discovered what the 'double button' light switch with red light - here in Germany the heating/boiler system uses a red light switch. red for on, the opposite being...not on. :-). Our system is oil based. if yours is as well, you need to turn off the system when 'filling the tank' and it needs to stay off for a few hours for sediment to settle. Also, find the person who services that system - call them. the previous owner should know and be willing to tell you. Congrats and welcome to expat life!!

Are you considering taking out the batons on the walls and applying a Lyme plaster to the walls? It would definitely require at least 3 coats, but it would be beautiful when finished. May I also suggest a hand sander rather than an industrial sander if you DIY it. You can really tear up a floor.

It seems like you might have a comb dish and a sponge or soap dish. Are there drainage holes in the round piece? A sponse pot has normally a bowl with an inset with drainage holes. The comb vessel misses his lid. Sometimes these sets also have a chamberpot.

I was surprised, in one of your earlier videos, to see all that amazing Victorian interior architecture in your home. It's rare to find such lovely and well preserved examples.
6:34 If you are not familiar with the name Eugene Viollet-le-Duc you may want to look him up. He was a 19th century architect and scholar who popularized the Gothic revival in France. You may be able to learn something about the meanings of the ornaments in your home from his books. By the way, he was also responsible for the restoration of the Chateau d'Amboise as well as many other important renovations.

The house is fantastic and seems to be gothic revival. If tat is correct then the painted curtain seems to represent te images of painted curtains common in te medieval period

We went to IKEA to get things like dishes, a bath mat, one big rug, and two chairs. 😅 We aren't outfitting the house with IKEA, don't worry. We just needed a one-stop shop to get a lot of basics! We had literally *nothing* in the house. Thanks for watching!

@@AustintoAmboise Could you tell me the ball park cost of your 1850 house, please?? Are there any smaller, cheaper places in Amboise??

The pricing of homes in Amboise is varied of course, based on size, location, condition, etc. We were lucky to find a house and garden of this size right in the old quarter. It seems to be a bit of a rarity. But here's the website for the realtors that sold us this house, Nestenn. You can browse their listings to get some idea: nestenn.com/?action=listing&prestige=0&transaction=acheter&list_ville=37400+Amboise

The date is October 24th of 1902.
RD maybe for Roger Dumée - born in may 1879 in Amboise -; one of the two last members of the family who had been living there in the last half of XIXth (plus domestic servants) & beggining of the XXth century.
Looks like he still inhabited there in 1911 with his father - if not here, at least in the same street. Inhabited in Geneva in 1913. Did not respond to the order of general military mobilisation in 1914. Died as a civilian prisoner in Germany in 1916.

Well done guys - great progress getting up that carpet and what a find in that little alcove area in the library. I hope your washing machine arrives soon. Imagine there is a laundromat in town? Will you be purchasing a car? I cannot imagine all the things you need to learn to get going in a new country.

      @AustintoAmboise  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Merci beaucoup! There is a laundromat, so that's a good backup. We're hoping to get by without a car. We plan to get electric bicycles for getting around locally, and just rent a car occasionally when we need to. A lot of trips can easily be done by train, but we'd need a car for visiting more out of the way places.
