    • @HwarangOfFaith
      @HwarangOfFaith 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Cesar Millan put dog training back half a century by spouting the nonsensical bullshit he made up without any sort of evidence. iMonikah is correct in saying that Millan is dead wrong about dog behavior. Cesar's entire dog training philosophy of the 'Dominance/Ownership' theory is patently incorrect and absurd...
      He incites cult-like following and his followers responds with logical fallacies when presented with counter-argument as you just did, saying how you have a friend who's a dog training as if that's an argument. There are many sources that expose Cesar and his ignorance on the internet. Do your research before you dominate and own your dog like this moron.

    • @louiscyfer6944
      @louiscyfer6944 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +realhumanbean and what argument did you make that is not a logical fallacy? monica certainly didn't make a counter argument, and bringing up an anecdote to illustrate a point, that is an example, not a logical fallacy. you dont even know what a logical fallacybis, you just heard that word and thought to yourself, "i can sound meself some smaartdts if i just say them word." now make an actual syllogism.

    • @iMonikah
      @iMonikah 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** "What is your argument against dogs being pack animals? "
      Try every single research paper about dogs in the past 10 years. Just google it? Seriously, I already gave you links. Stop being so fucking lazy. It's a FACT that dogs are not pack animals now. It doesn't matter that they are descended from wolves, they have COMPLETELY different behaviors.
      If you want to debate that Cesar's methods work, then I think you're wrong but at least there's something to debate there. If you want to debate that dogs are pack animals, you''re just embarrassing yourself because pack theory has been disproved for yeaaaars now.

    • @louiscyfer6944
      @louiscyfer6944 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      iMonikah have you read every single research paper about dogs in the past 10 years? i know i have read at least several that mentions nothing about dogs not being pack animals. others mention that they are, in fact dogs form packs when abandoned or running loose, a tendency that causes problems in rural areas and suburban areas with abandoned dogs.

      @White CIS Cum No, you're just one of those people who goes too far in the other direction and thinks that non-human animals don't have emotions at all.
      Which would also mean that they don't have instincts. The difference between human emotions and instincts is the degree to which our more complex minds and modes of thinking enter into it and shape what we're feeling.

    It's funny that Cesar clearly explains why dogs don't get "jealous", and yet people still insist that they do. Cesar is a very smart man. Maybe he just goes over the heads of some people, or they're just programmed to be contrarians. They accuse him over and over of things he clearly doesn't do and has explained in umpteen different ways. So I think any "jealousy" in the argument is coming from humans.

      Elizabeth M Well first of all people really want animals to be like us and feel the same thing.
      A lot of things we do for example drugs like smoking weed, it is a natural behavior that animals also do (for example Dolphins get high by using a puffer fish) so it’s not a human thing like we want it to be but a natural thing.
      And don’t forget that a lot of humans always thinks that what they know is the truth and that they are always right and never wrong.
      I believe that Cesar knows a lot about dogs and i learned a lot from watching his tv shows.

    When I brought a second dog into the home with the lab, I was concerned about the behaviour between them. But they get along beautifully. They walk together three times a day, they eat at the same time, they sleep near each other every night. The only time I've had issues was not long after I got her all of a sudden the lab was sat in a very tense position in the corner all the time and everytime anyone (dog or human) went near him he'd run off. Very strange, since he normally loves humans, and he had previously been fine with the cocker spaniel (they had been for walks together before we brought her into the home). Took him to the vet, turned out he had a wire embedded into his cheek just beneath his skin, so we couldn't see it. The cocker had kept trying to lick his face and he'd run away. As soon as he had the appropriate vet treatment he and the cocker were happily playing with each other and he was back to his normal confident self:)

    This is at least somewhat a matter of what you mean by jealousy. My cousin asked me to house sit his two dogs. One was outgoing and friendly with new people, the other one went and hid and didn't want anything to do with me. I decided to simply ignore the shy one and played ball with the friendly one. Pretty soon the shy one's "jealousy" overcame her shyness and she came out and wanted to play too. Cesar may label that something else, but to me the best word was jealousy.

    • @CptSmokeAlot
      @CptSmokeAlot 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That seems like trust or insecurity more than jealousy. The dog was being left alone which is a learned behavior of coping, natural dogs are pack animals. What you call jealousy I would call instinct. The dog instinctually wanted to be a part of the temporary pack that you just formed with a member of it's current/former pack. The dog probably didn't want anything to do with you at the time, which is okay sort-of. Once the other pack member trusted you or accepted you as a pack leader the more submissive dog followed the more confident dog. You want to praise the shy dog once it joins the pack so it learns THAT is what you're looking for.
      The best thing I learned from Cesar Millan is that a dog is a dog not a human, and while it's nice to paint those human feelings/emotions onto our dogs it can allow them to develop undesirable traits like whining and other out of control states.

    • @AlmostEthical
      @AlmostEthical 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest that human jealousy is no less instinctual than those of other animals, even if we add layers of complexity.

    The definition of jealousy is: Feeling resentment against someone because of that person's rivalry , success or advantage. Jealousy is a human thing , you people are confused . Do you think that a dog would be jealous of another dog if you feed one dog fresh meat and the other dry food ? The only thing the dog does is claiming or protecting like any other animal would do like birds, reptiles fishes, amphibians insects..ect, ect. if the dogs was jealous it wouldn't allowed the other dog close to Cesar at anytime. You know..? Like an ex girlfriend who stalks you after you told her to it was over and when she sees you with another girl calls you and tells you she is gonna kill your new girlfriend ? That is jealousy !

The chimp who got the cucumber became jealous of the one who got the grape and threw the cucumber at the scientist who was feeding him..

    The interesting thing of this matter is that probably we should define jealousy in a different way, because if being jealous means becoming possessive, then yes, we could say dogs are jealous and when humans are jealous is a sign of possessiveness, no more. Isn't it?

      That is interesting, but only really applies when, for example, a person is jealous of another because they spend more time with their mutual friend, in which case the first person is being possessive of the friend. But jealousy can also be applied to a person being jealous of another's achievements, in which case it has little to do with possessiveness..

      Envy some times people also mistake Jealousy with Envy which is a close second to jealousy.
      Envy is when someone has something success, a lover, a home a family, a dog, anything and they feel Envious that you have that nad they don't. how ever, that doens't always equate to something bad and Dogs Might have their version of "envy" which or what Humans like to call "jealousy"
      My dog likes to go over to some people and jump in their lap and get pettings, while she looks back at her brother, and when he sees this, he jumps into that persons lap and pushes her off, and then just continuously jumps into their lat wanting attention too. he won't chase or push my dog off, but he will if there is a cat.
      That could be called "jealousy" even though it really isn't. a lot of association with "jealousy" is also Negativity. jealousy can turn into resentment. dogs don't resent anything.
      Dogs don't have that particular ....feeling i guess, Resentment is more human than dog.
      people forget that Dogs,, aren't human. they can be family, but they are not human beings. and thus don't feel thigns like We do
      So, do dogs "feel" or "get" jealous of other dogs or humans or other animals?
      ...

    • @hahna77
      @hahna77 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      xGlassxAngelx My dog gets both jealous and resentful. If I love on another dog and ignore her attempts at stealing my affection away, she will literally cry and sulk and even turn her head and ignore me for a while. Once I was loving on the other dog and she jumped into my mom's lap and made a big display of talking and licking all over her, while occasionally looking back at me to see if I was paying attention. As much as I respect his other techniques and info, Ceasar, you or none of the other naysayers will ever be ever to convince me otherwise.

    I'm planning on getting a German Shepherd. But I'm waiting for the right time. I feel like I know quite a lot, but not enough. There are also obsticles. Such as, when I get a puppy it will need a lot of my time, but by the time I will know enough to get a dog, I will have a job (I currently go to school, where I also have a "training dog" that is a German Shepherd). Anyways, my point is that I learn a lot from you. I'm currently reading your book about the puppies you brought home (it's in Swedish, and I'm not sure of the original title). I've always loved German Shepherds. They're wonderful dogs. We've had a family dog, but she was mostly my mother's, and my mother was the one who raised her. She, the dog, had some issues and I was never really into that breed (I've met others of that breed as well).
    It just bugs me how a lot of people get dogs without really knowing much about them. They think that they will know everything necessary to raise their own dog, because "they know people with dogs" or they "had a dog in their family as a kid" or even worse, "dogs are cute. I want one, so let's get one".
    A girl I was friends with very recently, wanted to get a dog too. She said she wanted a German Shepherd as well. I asked her out of curiosity: "Why a German Shepherd?" She gave me no good answer really, except "they're cool". That was fine I suppose, but then I started talking about how I'm not sure which breeders to trust, so I can get the most healthy dog as possible (I've also heard, read and learned in "dog practice class" that quite a lot of German Shepherds can suffer from hip dysplasia and such). What did she tell me, then? Something like this: "Nehh. Who cares? Just get a dog from any breeder. Really any dog can get sick. And just enjoy the time you get with it. Live in the now." So... that pretty much ended the conversation.

      @Stettafire 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IDK. With any breeder I'd say make sure you can see the puppies and the parents beforehand. See what condition they've living in. Are they in a comfortable safe environment or are they cooped up in the shed with nothing but the concrete floor to stare at? Keep an eye on the breeders too, what are their attitudes towards the dogs? Are they indifferent or do they seem to genuinely care? If you have any reaosn to suspect the dogs might be in danger, report them to your authority in your country. In the UK the RSPCA and in the US the SPCA.
      Also, make sure you get your puppies when they are the correct age, a breeder trying to give you dogs that are too young is a major red flag. Plus, bare in mind that the mother should be at age 1 or higher, if they are younger then that, that is also a red flag.
      Also, be weary of hip scores, they are quite commonly faked and the process of getting the hip score requires the breaking of the hip.
      Sign of a healthy dog is a shiney coat, bright eyes. The parents shouldn't have a dull coat or dim looking eyes. That's a concern.
      I had a german shepard rescue who was saved from a puppy mill. She had a tonne of health issues and behavioural issues that took a lot of work to work through. German shepards are traditionally working dogs so they need a lot of excercise or they'll eat your house (I'm not exaggerating).

    Jealousy is a human emotion. Dogs don’t feel anything like that. They’re not capable of it. Any more than they are capable of feeling guilt at chewing up the couch. I’ve always thought it was bizarre that people will argue until they’re blue in the face that in fact their dog experiences a full range of human emotions. I thought these people are just...mistaken and need helping. But I think I’ve realised that that isn’t the case. What I believe is happening is the person has formed essentially a surrogate romantic relationship with the dog, and accepting that the animal is not feeling any of the emotions that are being projected into would undermine the persons view of themselves and a major relationship in their life. I feel more sympathy for them now, but I don’t think it’s possible to change their minds. And the poor dogs are doomed to live in a state of perpetual anxiety and stress.

    Interesting pint of view :-) I think that the difference between claiming and jealousy that Cesar is trying to portray here is that dogs claim also other things, like food for example. Seeing claiming as a dog behavior, and not necessarily as a human emotion like jealousy, and using that in order to get the dog out of his state (pushing him away) can be quite useful. Thank you, Cesar.

    All he did was explain WHY the dogs are jealous by saying its the human's fault. It still means that they are jealous. He simply called it by another name.. by terms which actually define jealousy itself (dominance, possession, etc). Jealousy is when you have fear or anxiety over an anticipated loss of something of value to you. I like Cesar, but he is human and thus fallible.

      Cesar is a very smart man, but he lacks the professional scientific terminology sometimes and uses colloquial terms to relate it to the general public.
      Im a masters student in conservation biology and have insight into predatory animals, genetics, and their behaviour. Cesar just has a problem relating scientific behaviour of pack animals (that he knows very well) to the public.
      Dogs are possessive, not jealous. Jealousy is a unique semi-complex concept to humans that involves the feelings of the one giving affection, the one receiving affection, and especially the absence of the individual's affection and tying it all together. It's not simply about possession, we go further and tie that to subjective feelings. When Cesar said "The dog wants what the other dog has" That sort of isnt the right way to convey what the dogs were feeling. for example when Cesar Had the female dog with him, she claimed the space and affection around Cesar (possessive) and Junior (the other dog) was just roaming around and got too close, Junior didnt "want what she had" he just got too close to her possession. Junior didn't care the absence of affection and thus was not Jealous of her, and the female dog simply cared about not losing here possession NOT taking into consideration what Junior would feel if he were the one getting affection instead (that would also be jealousy). Dog minds don't get that complex (not because they're dumb but because evolutionarily they dont need to be that complex, theyre not humans)

    • @jimgadsden2459
      @jimgadsden2459 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omar Morales Luna So what you are saying is, if I have 2 dogs and one bone and I give the bone to one dog, it becomes that dogs possession. The other dog now wants to possess the bone.
      That fits my criteria for what jealousy is. It's just the doggy version.

  • @kcartesius
    @kcartesius 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Your own dogs just come to say hello to someone they like, it's not about "claiming" then, it's about just being and exchanging affection. Genuine friendship is above the "Alpha pack leader logic" and doesn't require permission per instance anymore. Junior is an approved and trusted family member, Loretta isn't, and so, she is insecure and slightly competitive.
    My bull terriers entered my personal space one at a time or all at once - no competition at all, no permission needed, just "family" existence.

    I think I have to politely disagree with this one. I agree with claiming space, but oh dogs ARE jealous FOR SURE. Have you seen the video of the jealous great dane? My dogs won't come 100% of the time if I call THEIR name, but if I call the other one, they come 100% of the time I call their sibling's name. They claim the space the other is trying to get (but they don't have an aggressive bone in their bodies)they roll on top of me.I do need to work on claiming my space though. If our dogs's favourite chair and couch are taken they will stare at us until we move our legs and if we don't, these 70 pound labraddooddles will climb right on top of you and sleep there. I've been watching a lot Of Cesar so I'm learning. My pup definitely sees me as a pack leader more than my 3 year old. We got her at 8 weeks old. Second sibling gets away with NOTHING.

      +Blessedmommy73 I get what you're saying. I think maybe it's more that the dogs just don't have the same reasoning as we do. IDK how to articulate it but I think it's more dominance (not aggressive, but a dog pack , pecking order thing) than jealousy. We tend to humanize our dogs , projecting our opinions on to them to explain behavior. Maybe your dogs are just showing the alpha, beta, etc, roles. And it looks to us like jealousy.

Jealousy is the fear of losing something of value to you. When another dog threatens to steal your dogs possession (food, human, toy) and your dog gets upset, thats jealousy.
