  • Wow this day was by far the most gruelling ride I and John have ever done. We rode the mountain trail from Espinama to Sotres (potentially the harder direction to have travelled) and under estimated what lay ahead.
This is part of the trans European trail (TET), and I did it on road tyres.
    Please enjoy and subscribe.

If it ain't a challenge it ain't an adventure lol. I now have total respect for the boys and girls that make it look easy lol

Bravest thing about this video was taking a KTM that far in the wilderness without a break down truck

Fair play for taking on that trail with road tyres on. So jealous seen it many times on here and it's one I would live to explore. The bike is a heavy one but in Enduro mode with decent tyres on they are great off road. Just wish they had adjustable brake pedal position for when standing up. Think you did it the right way round as seen others do it from opposite end and struggled up the rocky hill and paddling up hill is hard!. Its roads like that, that give you memories that you will always remember and laugh about.

Yes the rear brake lever is in a really poor position. I wonder if it can be adjusted

@@stevesherlockrides had a look at adjusting, it’s possible but looks a bit of a mare to do. SW Motech do an adapter that looks good. Keep meaning to get it and test it out.

Tbh I hardly use it on the road unless steep declines

Crikey you were brave or mad riding that trail on road tyres. Well done though, some of the gradients are well steep and the surface is pretty loose with rocks and gravel so easy to slide especially with the road tyres on your bike. Agree you have to go back but with proper off road tyres.
It looked hot when you rode it. It can't have been easy handling the weight of your Multistrada V4S slipping and sliding beneath you.
If you think this trail is good you gotta do the Ruta del Cares which goes from Cain to Poncebos and follows an aquaduct cut through the mountains. It is mind boggling how they cut through all the rock to construct it. It is a stunning trail.
The Espinama to Sotres trail is actually the GR202 walking trail. If it becomes any more popular with bikers then there is a risk that they might be banned as the Picos are a National Park.
The weather was pants when I was there at the start of May for two weeks. Only had 4/5 nice days out of 16. I got out just before another storm was due to hit and it turned very cold again. I rode back over the Pyrenees and up through France managing to dodge the torrential down pours.
Thanks for making and sharing your film.

Thanks Alex, it was borderline silly doing it on road tyres but I am so glad I did it. We did try and get to Cain via the 'Rusty Road' I think it's called but will go back there next time.
How does the Cain trail compare please? Is it a Road tyre trail or not etc?

@@stevesherlockrides Hi Steve, Thanks for your reply and sorry for my delay in replying.
The trail from Cain to Poncebos, the Ruta del Cares is a walking trail, very well appointed. Cain is the end of the road as I am sure you know but you can walk through a narrow gorge heading north from Cain which widens out as it approaches Poncebos. It is a fabulous breathtaking walk through the mountains. Each way is about 4 hours. I started at 9am from Cain and was back at around 4:30pm.It makes for a very good day off the bike using the legs. I would go as far as to say it is the best one day walk I have ever done. Some people stay over night either in Cain or Poncebos and return the next day.

Sounds awesome. The guys I ride with wouldn't usually sacrifice a day on the bikes for a walk unless it's of beer involved lol. Does sound ace though.

@@stevesherlockrides Yes, I can highly recommend it. I can't ride day after day hours and hours in the saddle. I feel pretty crappy if I don't get some exercise periodically, plus I like hiking especially in mountains. I like to have variety.
So I am super pleased I found and did this walk when I went to the Picos at the start of May. I would be gutted if I'd subsequently found out about it and not done it having been in Cain. The beauty of this one is that it is a very good well maintained path, not particularly hard or technical, winding through stunning scenery. You don't need to be particularly fit although it helps, no special equipment. In summer you can do it in T-shirt, shorts, trainers or sandals, hat, sunglasses and sun cream. Take a bottle of water as well. Just a day's walk if you return same day. You can have lunch in either Cain or Poncebos and then return. A very good day off the bike. The area is great for hiking as well as riding bikes. There are nice places to stay in Cain as well although there is no campsite although I camped at the back of the supermarket in a field with the huge mountains all around. The owners were super friendly. The people at the Hostel there were also super friendly and allowed my to camp in their field/car park at the side although there was no shade so I chose the field at the back of the supermarket. But it was start of May pretty low season so not heaving with people meaning the situation might be different in mid summer. I liked Cain very much as I did the whole region.
Now I look back at my pics almost one month ago and think "Wow, stunning!!! I really walked there?" I can highly recommend it.
Yes of course I love riding on the brilliant roads in Spain, not all brilliant btw as I rode on a few ropey surfaces, but that walk has given me memories I shall never forget as indeed most riding does in Spain. I loved the coast road from Bilbao to Panes, the whole area really. I will definitely do this walk again when I go back to the Picos again in October as it is so beautiful.
Riding in Spain and elsewhere although great fun is not the be all and end all for me. There has to be variety. The exercise also makes you so much fitter and more comfortable so when you do have a few days in the saddle you are so much more able and comfortable.
Anyway Steve it's a great walk in an area of outstanding beauty. Wish I had filmed it and then could put it on YT. Maybe next time. I took lots of pics though but you cannot post them here.
Would love to do the TET in northern Spain, but on a much lighter and more manageable bike say a Honda CRF300L or KTM 300EXC.
Thanks again for making your videos. Hope you manage a return trip on your bike with more suitable tyres.
      Sorry for the essay.
      ATB.
