This is hands down the best video I've seen on... well all of the topics discussed. I'm so tired of the boating community spewing so much outdated and inaccurate information. It's amazing how often you will see people telling someone they're going to die if they get X boat or don't get Y boat. IMHO, if it's seaworthy, and you enjoy sailing it, it's the perfect boat. I'm personally aiming at the "performance cruiser" catamaran as my goal. Something that is a happy medium of spaciousness/comfort and performance. I was originally not interested in daggerboards because I didn't want them sticking way up out of the deck when they are up, and didn't like the idea of sacrificing interior space, I have to admit, between captive enclosed daggerboards and their various advantages over standard cat minikeels, I'm starting to feel more and more like I want to go that direction.
Thank you so much for sharing your plans and for your kind words! My personal opinion is a lot of sailors would been much better of with a easy handling modern mass production yacht and just go out sailing instead of an old expensive upper fixer. Anyway I’m excited to hear about your catamaran!!! Performance is also comfort in terms of how a performance cat slice through the water. I’m jealous every time I’m out sailing with friends lucky to own a modern performance cat. Don’t worry to much about the space inside! Most of the time your outside anyway! Cheers 🍻
Great episode, with this fresh view on an old debate that never seems to end. But as you said it is a personal choice in the end. I liked all the effort you put in your videos, congrats. Cheers.

wow! that was great. I have spent my life cruising in small boats. the smaller the better. the reason is I love cruising all the time and hate working in pointless jobs. I have never even thought of shopping in your price range. My boats cost the same as one of your winches. I agree that project boats are for people who prefer boat building rather than sailing and partying. I bought a 45ft wooden ketch once and ended up a victim of deep water marinas etc, never again. I would love to have your budget to choose such a fine yacht. I believe in the Moto, go small, go cheap but go NOW! I have seen so many people stuck on marinas for years until their boat is perfect. I get the best I can afford and fix it as I go or learn to live without things, like engines, lol.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 It doesn’t really matter price or make or even size as long it’s classed for its purpose and well maintained. Enjoy and have fun! Cheers 🍻
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻 Not every video will be like this as it’s crazy lots of work. But planning on sail trim and how to use backstay tension in strong winds etc. Cheers 🍻
Thank you so much. Although you make your video as casual as it would appear, I find so much distilling knowledge packed into it that halfway through, I subscribed without hesitation - a first. You are brilliant. Thanks for sharing your deep knowledge so humbly.
A well presented and delivered summary of your boat buying choice. I particularly like your choice to only spend 50% of your cash on the boat and to keep the remainder in the bank for running costs etc. Some people spend too much on the initial purchase and don't maintain the boat. I hadn't thought about the practicalities of an aft cockpit, dinghy garage and swim platform, they make a lot of sense.
I have been watching other sailing channels for yrs. and i have to say, your quite enjoyable as well as knowledgeable, and you are so correct in not defining what others should like. i am adding you and subscribing..i see a great journey ahead.
Thomas you just taught me so much! You've also shown me that my own research has been valid. I came to the same conclusions that you have about many things, like what's more important to me about my boat (if I can ever afford one). I really appreciate your vlog, your humour is great and you're always informative. Not boring at all mate.
Thank you 🙏🏻 But please remember Im no expert! Only sharing my experience in my journey. Im glad you enjoy my dry humour🤣 Thank you for watching and cheers from Be Free🍻
Hi Thomas, just came across your video and want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience and input. Watching your video just broaden my views and options. I actually learned something today and that my friend is a good (no, scratch that) a great thing. Hope your journeys are safe.
I have lived comfortably on three boats all 22 feet long. Then I got had two 30 feeters much better. I would say you should be looking at 30 to 45 feet. You have to consider can all marinas take you. Like one of my home countries, Portugal, my final boat will be a 45 foot Lemsteraak type.
It’s all down to preferences and the level of desired comfort and budgets. I agree with you around 40 feet is a good size for live aboard. From 45 and up things skyrocketing in running costs and maintenance. So I believe you have some valid points. Thank you so much for being here 🙏🏻
This was great, far from boring! I thought it was short and couldn’t believe it was already over! I’m going to check & see if you did the other one on your opinions for your own boat, rigging, etc.
Thank you so much for your inspiring and kind words 🙏🏻 Now and then I upload more technical videos and how I do things. Trying to be transparent in my experience and decisions. Thank you for being here! Cheers 🍻
Not boring at all.... .. Very interesting as I am (as an old bloke) looking to go cruising. Comfort is a biggie .. but I want to sail fast too. Access to the water for boarding and swimming is an important feature often over looked. I get the following sea stuff in storm conditions but as you say when most of the time is spent at anchor..........?? Great vid and would love more. Cheers
As you spoke about the reasons why you wanted a bluewater boat like you now have, I kept saying Yes, Yes! I am finally able to listen to someone that thinks much the same way as I but has more knowledge on the subject than me. Unless one is well off, finding such a boat that is affordable may be a challenge. Thank you for this episode and I hope you will make more talks about this subject!
There is always compromise, regardless of budget. Your wants, your abilities, your plans all count. So even if you and I have similar plans, our optimum yacht could be very different. Which is very much in agreement with what you were saying. Still it is good to get other peoples opinions. I really like the way you repeated, that you were after a yacht for you.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment🙏🏻 Twin rudders have been around for at least 1 if not 2 decades already. Even more conservative yacht builders do this now. All the best🍻
Thank you Thomas. You made a number of very good and interesting points. I'm looking forward to the future subject videos. Some of the sailing channels I follow have experienced major mechanical and accident setbacks over the past year. Lightning, groundings, transducer failures with flooding, catamarans cracking in high seas and even an anchor falling overboard while underway (while still attached with chain). Really crazy stuff. No wonder the insurance rates are so high.
Thank you for your feedback 🙏🏻 Risk of something happening will always be there. It’s all about trying to minimise and one of the reasons I have my check list before leaving marina or anchorage. My check list have saved my ass at least three times. Last time before leaving marina in Grenada. I wish the insurance companies could have a better discount systems. But that’s another topic😅
Funny thing about Kon-Tiki: If Thor Heyerdahl had actually used the raft design (longer & narrower, with fewer logs, a sort of lug or lateen sail & multiple daggerboards) recorded by the first Spanish explorers along the NW coast of South America, his raft would absolutely have been able to sail upwind. The first one seen by the Spaniards was as capable as their own caravel, both in load-carrying & windward performance, & was being operated by a family in coastal trade. There is also archaeological evidence on most of the accessible beaches of the Galapagos Islands that early American voyagers went there & back frequently.
I have to disagree with you Sir, it was not boring. I learned a lot. Too bad I can not smell the Sea and taste the Salt like you Sir! :-) Beautiful Boat!
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻No need to call me Sir just say Thomas... I’m very casual. Imagine if it was possible to share the smell on TH-cam. Who knows one day some artificial reality video with smell and taste will be available. Not sure if it’s a good thing though... Take care and all the best! Cheers 🍻
@@SailingwithThomas Hello Thomas, thank you for you casual answer. ;-) And here I am naively thinking you would invite me on your Boat. :-) How do you say? May the Wind be always on your Side? We Landratten in Germany say Mast und Schotbruch but me too stupid to translate. :-)
Not boring Thomas, great video! I've been looking forward to hearing your opinion. Good humour Well explained mate! The sounds you're using are excellent Keep up the great vids
Very informative. I came to the same conclusion in my research. I settled on a 4-cabin Horstman trimaran. I get most of the upwind sailing capabilities of a monohull and most of the space and comfort of a catamaran. However, I had to spend some time and money in refit to bring it up to modern standards. Your conclusion is same as mine tho, 90% of a boats life is spent at rest. My boat is rock solid in an anchorage while the cockpit is bone dry during sailing in any storm.
So well researched and explained. Subbed instantly... After months of debating and leaning towards getting a catamaran, in one powerful video you have me considering monohulls too...!!
Tak for taking the time to entertainingly explain the science behind your selection criteria. Great video!!! Looking forward to further informative videos along this vein.
Love your Norwegian heritage inspiring you to use a Norwegian word here and there! I’m happy you enjoyed this one. It will definitely be more deep dive into topics in the future. All the best and cheers from Be Free🍻
A very good lesson on yacht selection. I may not agree with your choices, but I can respect them. I actually took a course on yacht design and planned on designing sailing yachts. I have discovered that there are so many sailing yachts already available that there is not much need for my training. In my opinion, any monohull that can recover from a 120 degree knock down is safe enough for blue water passages, providing the keel, the rudder and the rig will stay intact.
I am interested in learning more of your decisions for the design and builder of your yacht, to include accessories like water maker, and skiff garage, etc. Very informative for us considering which style to choose.
Thanks for this great video Thomas, really good tips and thoughts. looking forward to the next video. you really opened my eyes on a few things, cheers
Beard was a nice touch Thomas, could almost smell the salt and hear the seagulls. ...that was a joke. 😎. You may have mentioned it but was your boat brand/model. Thank you for expressing your views and experience so well
Hey, hey Thomas. Just found your channel and I’m a new sub. I am a wannabe sailor and I found this video and your opinions and experiences absolutely outstanding! Be safe and fair winds.
Thomas, now who else would I learn from than your Norwegian Viking Heritage. And I certainly did digest so much information, (actually viewed this episode 3 times) just so my 70+ year old brain could compute most of it. Yes, Is so much for an armchair want to be sailor to learn and retain such knowledge. So now where to find someone to lend me a sailing dingy as a starter..LOL As always mate, another champion episode. Fair Winds & Happy Days. Next we'll learn all the deck duties. Cheers Thomas.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 I’m really happy you enjoyed this episode and found it interesting. Inspiring to know. Thank you for being here and for watching my videos! All the best and cheers 🍻
No need to apologize, this was not boring but interesting. Would love to hear back how you can keep her up, heard bad numbers concerning part costs for bigger boats. Love you took your own decision based on your own thinking. Fair winds!
Thank you 🙏🏻In a year from now I will have enough data to make a trustworthy yearly running cost figure. After 5 years I guess the average will still be a lot but not as crazy as this year😅 I’m going to do a total refitting on all standing riggings...
Nope. The man who starts selling items for boats at a reasonable price will become a broke man very quickly. You think boat stuff is expensive because of greed. But that is not true. It is expensive because of low volume. There just aren't that many boats compared to, say, cars or cell phones or computer monitors. There is no huge pent-up demand of billions of sales waiting for the price to drop on boat parts. Especially cruising boats.
Hello MR. Thomas. I wanted to thank you for the video. So far in my Journey,of trying to find good information on types and why. You explained thing's very well and easy to comprehend. May the wind be at your back ,and the sun in your face, and may you always have a full sail. Thanks Friend.
Nicely done Thomas. Balanced and without judgement, just facts and what drove your decision. I’d love to hear a little more about your boasts specs and the compromises you accepted. Things like draft, sail plan, autopilot vs wind vane, etc. Also, liked the humour. My first video and now a subscriber. I’ll be back. Fair winds.
I remember watching a Hobie Cat trying to make the narrow entrance to a marina with a mild following breeze. When the captain realized he was not going to make it, he tacked to a broad reach with intention to quickly tack again (a dogleg) into the opening. Apparently, broad reach was its best point of sailing, because that Cat launched forward as though a bolt from a crossbow and drove the prow of one hull into the space between two pilings before the captain could react. After some some effort he was able to get his boat unstuck, but I had never before seen such acceleration under sail. Impressive!
That's the best analogy! Especially for those who don't know any different and are looking to buy their first sailboat. Unless they are motorcyclists (and car) riders! Then they'll know. This analogy just broke my years of swinging between mono and cat. For sure motorcycle adds another "je ne sais quoi" to the road trip.
I'm loving all these details, your channel is one of a kind and you're ever so slightly broken English actually helps me to understand because I have to focus and make sure I catch what your saying lmfao Keep it up!
Ha ha🤣 Thank you 🙏🏻It’s sometimes a challenge to explain what I want because it’s not my first language. So I’m happy you can turn it into something positive! Love it🍻🍻🍻
By far the best comparison, choosing speed and upwind performance are the way to go, avoiding rough weather through speed and more accurate predictions (Windy) would be my choice!
I just finished Kon Tiki and I’m reading Aku Aku now so I loved seeing the raft and especially knowing that you were actually on it. Easter Island is now on my bucket List! So is seeing the raft!
Hey that’s amazing! I read a lot about this when I was young dreaming of the adventure I’m on rigg now. The KonTiki raft is on the Heyerdahl museum in Oslo. The one I was towing and also onboard was the replica made for the cinema. All the best and cheers 🍻
Nice. I also would be a solo sailor (if I had a boat) and so that is an important topic for me. I was initially thinking multi-hull because less roll at anchorage. But maybe not now. I certainly am in the "no sail-drive" camp.
A cat normally sits pretty nice in Anchorage but so do deep keel wide body Modern mono. The sail drive is something I did not want either, however its possible to find cats with straight shafts. Not many but they do exist. Most important for me end of the day was budget and running costs. Cheers 🍻
Not boring at all! Maybe a little controversial but that is what makes it very interesting. I would like to hear a lot more about your thoughts. Thank you for this great video!
CONTROVERSIAL??? What is controversial is that people want or people talk or write about things like there are all these absolutes. They may has "custom yacht" or "blue water cruiser" - yet they are just guidelines or general concepts. I loved how he was showing "Tiki" as a custom yacht - and also his 10' sailboat when he was a kid as a "custom boat". What is controversial is all the controversy for nothing. It is like the GD Church of Woke Outrage and Fake Virtue took over one year (2019?) and they are only almost happy when you get canceled ... yet they are never really happy at all. It is only misery they love to inflict on the heretics, infidels and apostates of the world. You know, REAL humans! anyway, fair winds!
This is the first of your videos, I watched the whole thing, and now I am subscribing. I watch quite a fee S/V TH-cam channels, one thing I've learned is there are very few set in stone rules for sailing, outfitting and type of vessel, it's all about the sailor and what works for them.
Nice episode, you put a lot of effort into this. You are mostly correct, there's nothing particularly wrong with sailing production boats. The problems arise less when sailing and more when running into things. Top personal preference, I like submerged objects to bounce off of my hull and rudder without any damage :)
Thank you 🙏🏻I hear you and understand your arguments. If you look at the statistics the risk is there but very small. Still more dangerous driving a car
@@SailingwithThomas Depends on where you sail. West coast of Canada as well as Alaska waters are full of floating trees, some 50-60 meters long. I've hit three (at speed) and was glad for my strong hull each time. Kelly-Peterson 46 hull #005.
"Since most of my life, I've had enough of this sh*t". Lol! Amen brother, amen.

Cheers
Thank you for watching and your kind comments🙏🏻 I’m for sure planning on more untraditional content from a sailing channel. Cheers from Be Free🤣
I don't think that was boring at all. I enjoyed learning. I love your videos, thank you for taking the time to make them.
Thanks Thomas.
Interesting topics you touch on here.
Great information, not boring .
Go for all the other topics you sum up at the end. Experience is always valuable. Cheers.
Thank you 🙏🏻 Im planning on some more deep down topics but not every time as its crazy much work putting this together. Cheers 🍻
You have demonstrated a lot of common sense with your views. Thankyou, I found this video very informative.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words. I’m happy you enjoyed it and will make more in depth videos in the future. Stay safe and healthy 🍻
Thank you Sir 🙏🏻 I’m happy you got my point and enjoyed this video. Cheers 🍻
A nice, brief overview of various home designs. I had not even heard of a twin rudder model hall. The advantage makes so much sense.
Perfect timing for this video. Thank you ! New sub!
I watched it till the end! Great episode. Love it ❤️👍
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Fascinating. Love the animations and the comic comments.
Great video!! Your opinions seems to be very clever... and very respectful!! 👍 I will stay tuned! 👌
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 All the best and cheers from Be Free 🍻
Good humour
Well explained mate!
The sounds you're using are excellent
Keep up the great vids
Great video! Thank you very much. Very interesting topic (for me) 😊
Great video, very interesting!👍
Had to watch this again and it almost blowed my mind! I have some rethinking to do…
Thank you 🙏🏻 Im happy to know you enjoyed this one all over again. All the best 🍻
You make perfect sense! I agree with your advice. Thank you, Thomas. Stay safe.⛵
Thank you so much for watching and for being here! Your kind words are much appreciated. Cheers 🍻
Enjoyable informative presentation Thomas, thank you.
Smartest advice ever - set a budget and then buy something for half the budget, saving the other half for maintenance/ running costs.
Thank you! It’s a lifelong experience put into action. Thank you for watching and comment. All the best!
Thank you for watching and also sharing this🙏🏻 Sounds like you have a great boat👍🏻 All the best and fair winds! Cheers sailor 🍻
Lovely scenery. What a beautiful lifestyle
Thank you 🙏🏻 All the best 🍻
So well researched and explained. Subbed instantly... After months of debating and leaning towards getting a catamaran, in one powerful video you have me considering monohulls too...!!
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’m happy you enjoyed this episode. All the best 🍻
Enjoyed hearing your perspective, I am curious as to why you did not want a furling mainsail? Thank you.
Cuz sooner or later they will jamb. Period.
Good information from someone with experience. I've definitely contemplated mono vs multi and I'm glad you choose mono.
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’m really happy you enjoyed this video. All the best
Great video Thomas! We love your humor, your stories and how your channel and you are evolving with every video.
Thank you 🙏🏻 Your feedback is much appreciated. I’m happy you enjoyed this episode! Take care and all the best 🍻
Loads of great info, thank you👍👍
Thanks for this great video Thomas, really good tips and thoughts. looking forward to the next video. you really opened my eyes on a few things, cheers
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏻 Cheers from Be Free 🍻
What a great video. Loved all the information. Thank you! 👍🤙💖
Thank you for cutting through the myths!!! Lucky Man!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻Glad you enjoyed this! Thank you for watching and being here! All the best 🍻
Thank you so much! Welcome onboard and cheers from Be Free🍻
Great information life to short to not look outside one little bubble thumbs up master your journey
Thank you for watching and your comment 🙏🏻 I’m happy you enjoyed this episode and found it interesting. Cheers 🍻
One of the best videos of the year so far. Instant subscribe.
Wow! Thank you so much 🙏🏻 Cheers from Be Free 🍻
Excellent content and the outro song was a classic touch. Good vibes.
Fare-well brother.
The man who starts selling items for boats at a reasonable price will become a very rich man very quickly.
Thank you you so much 🙏🏻 Makes me happy you enjoyed this episode! Cheers from Be Free 🍻
Fair winds.
I have subscribed to your channel after 5 min. of watching. regards and love from Switzerland.
Thank you so much and welcome to my channel! Much appreciated and happy you found my channel. All the best and cheers 🍻
Brilliant comparative explanation with personal reasons included. Good lesson for the uneducated masses (me)
Thank you Sir 🙏🏻 Makes me happy that you enjoyed this episode. All the best and cheers from Be Free🍻
Impressive!
Wow sounds interesting😅 Yeah the Hobie Cats accelerates like small rockets!! I love to sail them. All the best and cheers from Be Free🍻
I have never been exited about catamarans.
It’s like choosing a car instead of a motorcycle when you actually want to ride a motorcyce😎
Ha ha 😆 To funny!
Thank you so much for watching 🙏🏻
That's the best analogy! Especially for those who don't know any different and are looking to buy their first sailboat. Unless they are motorcyclists (and car) riders! Then they'll know.
This analogy just broke my years of swinging between mono and cat. For sure motorcycle adds another "je ne sais quoi" to the road trip.
I'm loving all these details, your channel is one of a kind and you're ever so slightly broken English actually helps me to understand because I have to focus and make sure I catch what your saying lmfao
Keep it up!
Thank you for watching and your comment🙏🏻 All the best and cheers from Be Free🍻
Good video and nice arguments. Good winds and stay sailing, nice yacht you got there.
Thank you for watching and for your comment. All the best! Cheers 🍻
It takes a brave person to go aboard a floating compost heap in my opinion . Kinell .
Very good Thomas! I think you found your YT comfort zone.
Thank you Peter 🙏🏻 Still hate putting my face in the camera... Cheers 🍻
Very informative Tomas. Thank you.
Thank you Ron 🙏🏻
I enjoyed just the Facts per your wants. I’m going to start following you for more Truths!
Thanks again for just being you!
Cheers 🍻
nice talk! hope to see more of that...
Thank you 🙏🏻 It’s most likely coming more videos similar to this one. All the best 🍻
Thank you for s very interesting (give yourself more credit) informative video, I look forward to your next video.
Yeah, Chris White's Atlantics are so cool boats, so is his Hammerhead 54 - Pure gems
👍🏻 Cheers Thomas, BTW you are a sailing thinker :)
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’m totally with you the Chris White’s are really cool cat’s 💪🏻 Cheers from Be Free 🍻
You do bring up some valid points 👏
Thank you for not only subscribing and watching to the end, but also your kind words! All the best and cheers from Be Free🍻
13:47 is gold. Thank you for all the great info. I really enjoyed this
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed this episode. Cheers
I would say your opinions seem to dovetail nicely with what I would want from a boat if I just took to the seas.
Thank you for watching and your comment 🙏🏻 All the best 🍻
Thank you Thomas, very good video!
Subbed even though I'm a motoryacht person. I learned alot thanks for posting.
