  • This is a video about the unfortunately very common phenomena of "Oversimplified History".
    My video basically is a response to a video by Michael J. Knowles: "Germany: The Worst Country In History".
    By the way: The minister of the Interior of Bavaria recently reported the lowest crime-rate in Bavaria in 32 (!) years. I couldn't include it in the video anymore.

    Thank you for such a well informed (sources to verify ) video. I have seen Michael Knowles before and he does a lot of fear mongering. The sad thing about his oversimplification, cherry picking is that a lot of people will believe him. I have not seen this outrageous video before; however, I will watch it and inform him of his ignorance. I have my degree in history ( focusing on European history from the Germanic tribes through to modern day). While studying Anglo Saxon England I had to read up on Germanic tribal laws. So , Yes England is largely a Germanic country as is most of Western Europe and central Europe. First thing I noticed was when he said Germany for 2000 years has been the worst country, That is pretty good for a country that is actually younger than Canada. Thank you for the recommendation on the book "Sleepwalkers" i will be trying to find this book. On a happier note, I will be coming to Germany and visiting Nuremberg in May and i am so very excited because it has been a while since my last visit.

      On a funny note, with Michael Knowles conception of history, he probably actually believes that Luther ate a “Diet of Worms”. Just a bit humour for this Saturday

      although I find the claim of Germany's origin to 1871 equally oversimplified. What happened in 1871 was that a unification happened under the banner of Protestant Brandenburg when the Habsburg Catholic Austria had failed to do so in parts because of its more multiethnic principality to aim for something similar. Just because the German lands/fiefs were very autonomous we still have about 500+ years of a core of them being in political entities sharing customs, laws, language and foreign policies. Just because something turned into a failed state after 1648 with high autonomy to its regions does not mean it was no state. In many ways the HRE around 1400-1600 developed very much along the same lines as France, Spain and England. By contrast it just failed at removing power from the high nobility the way those more centralized kingdoms managed.
      So yes, modern germany was officially founded in 1871 but we had the German Confederacy before that, the Federacy of the Rhine before that, the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation before that and the German kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire alongside the Kingdom of Italy and Bohemia before that. They all saw themselves as continuity and replacement of the thing before.
      Also it bears mentioning the modern concept of nationhood is a thing of the 19th century and was not a thing even in the centralized absolutist monarchies of Spain, France and England before that time. Even modern French is a recent thing from the second half of the 19th century. Before that France had widespread and heavily distinct dialects among the population.
      Overall all that is even more complex than we give it credit for.

    No "country" is even 2000 years old, the oldest continuous nation I can think of would be England maybe, with 1066 being a starting point as we've never lose any part of England at any point since then, where as other countries have been conquered or lost territory since then.
    Imo learning bad or incorrect history is worse than not learning at all

      The oldest country in the world is san Marino.

    • @MasterIceyy
      @MasterIceyy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@___E San Marino has the oldest government, not nation, as it was conquered multiple times. Cesare Borgia briefly invaded and ruled San Marino in the 1500's
      It would later than be ruled as part of the papal states in the 1600's, although the republican government was kept in charge, it was administred as a papal state. so it's not the oldest continuous nation.
      Japan would be a better contender as the islands were technically ruled by the Imperial family since 660 BC till today. they are the longest continual reigning royal family in world history, as the Japanese Emperors have never been overthrown or replaced
