LL was basically the 1 st rap superstar as far as crossing over to mainstream America just like Run DMC as a group, but after his 80’s run, but to his core he was an 80’s New York hip hop star and artist, once the 90’s came the music shifted away from the 80’s rappers and it happened to LL also as a rapper, but he started acting and kept his brand going in that space consistently since then as an actor, also as a dude from the south (Louisiana) I recognize that New Yorkers look at LL in a more legendary light as an Emcee compared to other parts of the country
I think the '80s rapper who held his own the most lyrically through the '90s and beyond is the Kool "Genius" of Rap... tbh, I think he's the only '80s rapper who has gotten increasingly better through the years, until he peaked around the mid '00s. Most of the '80s rappers were only great during the '80s, so I get your point. Slick Rick is still ill when he drops, but it's like nobody cares. Nobody talks about Slick Rick anymore, because it's so rare when he drops.

I really don't have any push back with LLs claim other than him being The Most Important EVER.. I would be more specific and say of The Mainstream because as long as he was inspired by someone Great BEFORE him he can't say ever. CAZ, Mo Dee and Mel are crazy Important and without them L wouldn't have dreamed of rhyming to that level of greatness before them so I would say The Mainstream is it. He's definitely The Man.. Not too many fucking with his contributions

There was only one group that put hip-hop on the map! Where everyone in elementary school, Jr high school and high school knew every word to every song! In that group was Run DMC!!! it changed the way we walked the way we dressed and it gave us a pride about ourselves!
Just heard the new album. Waaaaaaaaayyyyy better than I thought it would be. He rapping like he never got signed. The flow is just as good as it was when he was young. Pleasant surprise.
I think some of these younger dudes are checking for older rappers now. Just look at these videos where they do reactions to older songs. I live to see younger dudes listening now to Mobb Deep or artist like that.
He didnt tell a single lie. He was the first to do the ballad rap when that was unheard of, the fashion, the crossover dude did it all when noone else was brave enough to go against the grain. Now everyone can benefit from it

LL has a valid argument to be made. From the 80s he was the Gold standard. Stayed relevant in the 90s ans even adapted to the new style. Even 2000s had a few hits and adapted. Will Smith another one alot of people dont realize just how mich he accomplished
I love LL... He has an argument for most iconic solo MC of all time. But Whodini's One Love dropped and blew BEFORE LL's I Need Love. Run DMC rocked dookie chains and had an Adidas sponsorship before LL did either. Sure, he was the first artist on Def jam, but Sugar Hill Records was Def jam first... And had signed nearly all of Hip Hop's legendary pioneers from the '70s many years earlier. Moe Dee spit "I'm The Greatest, but not Ali, I'm Kool Moe Dee" years before LL ever coined GOAT. Also, there was another solo MC who was first to go Gold, first to be signed to a major label, and first to be considered a sex symbol... Jheri Curl and all... His name was Kurtis Blow. So I admire LL's confidence as well as his contribution to Hip Hop, but his account of Hip Hop History is let's just say... Selective.
As a former Kool Moe Dee fan, you are correct on most of what you stated however unlike DMC or The Fatboys, LL was solo...Kurtis never blew up nationally the way Uncle L did, atleast not in Illinois mid 80s, we got BMX out of Chicago and they played rap, wasn't no MTV Raps out yet.

Yeah I notice Milennial parents (under 40) don't expose their children to a lot of classic 90s hip hop and r&b or even stuff before that smh. Generation X (44+ and up) does but it's split in that generation because the older side leans more r&b while the younger ones basically grew up hip hop from the the golden age on up.

People would be saying LL Cool J is the GOAT if he hadn’t made 14 Shots to the Dome. That album was garbage! Luckily for him that album didn’t kill his career as he came back with a vengeance with Mr. Smith.
No one is taking LL out of the GOAT convo in 2024 because of one album from 1993. The reason he's not included in that list more often is simply mainstream popularity and recency bias.

We need to keep having these conversations because I’m really tired of the younger generations thinking that know and created EVERYTHING! And are unwilling to listen to ANYTHING!
9:00 "Cause they need that to solidify themselves." Bro found a spot to be defensive and took it 😂😂
He bridged old school with the new school and stay relevant by collaborating with up and coming talented rappers.
If you're a genuine Hip Hop head...you know the impact and how really dope Ll Cool J is
Between Him and Run DMC as the most important rappers/artist in hip hop.
Y love natural long hair. All my live from grandma, my mother to my sisters, has natural long hair, and the shortest length to the shoulders Thanks LL
Good comment.
YO Mecca . Here's a few names to consider WHEN you start your OWN podcast . ( " Hip Hop Historians " - " Knowledge is King " - " Our Culture " - " 1520 Sedgwick AV "- " Reminisce ova You " ) .
LL NEVER LOST A BATTLE 💯💯💪🏿
I know I’m old head but the first hip hop record I ever heard and brought was The Sugar Hill Gang Rappers Delight
Me to my brother
LL is hip hop,top 5 regardless of any list, did all the things the rappers do and enjoy now!
He has an argument.
Love the intro
🔥
Yes he’s one of the most important rappers in rap. His new album is fire
There was only one group that put hip-hop on the map! Where everyone in elementary school, Jr high school and high school knew every word to every song! In that group was Run DMC!!! it changed the way we walked the way we dressed and it gave us a pride about ourselves!
LL is the GOAT hands down
I went to a Sting concert during the summer, he killed it at 70!
I Need Love was LL's 3rd love song !!! He made two love songs for I need Love. LL been doing this Rap stuff since 1985 💯💯💯
"Do you agree" is crazy, this question doesn't need to be asked 🤦🏿♂️😂
Just heard the new album. Waaaaaaaaayyyyy better than I thought it would be. He rapping like he never got signed. The flow is just as good as it was when he was young. Pleasant surprise.
Pac was the most important. LL was definitely necessary
I think some of these younger dudes are checking for older rappers now. Just look at these videos where they do reactions to older songs. I live to see younger dudes listening now to Mobb Deep or artist like that.
Hip Hop started for me with LL Cool J "I Can't Live Workout My Radio"!
He definitely is the GOAT❤❤
Give LL his 🌼
Can't be mad at LL for that statement.
YES HE IS.
Lots of people have been clicking on the Premo content thinking it's Dj Premier!!! Premo don't even know Premier!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂 yes i did too
He didnt tell a single lie. He was the first to do the ballad rap when that was unheard of, the fashion, the crossover dude did it all when noone else was brave enough to go against the grain. Now everyone can benefit from it
If I'm not mistaken, the first rappers to get their own movie were Kid N Play
Maybe their "own" movie, but ll was acting in 85. (Krush Groove) house party came out in 90
LL has to account for all the eras who doesn't know he's a rapper turned actor
For her to be offended when he said she got one on and she did have one on sums up the lovely ladies!

LL Cool J IS THE GREATEST
LL has a valid argument to be made. From the 80s he was the Gold standard. Stayed relevant in the 90s ans even adapted to the new style. Even 2000s had a few hits and adapted. Will Smith another one alot of people dont realize just how mich he accomplished
That's the difference one is rap one is hiphop
Depends on how you define most important. LL is up there. You also have Kurtis Blow (Hip Hop's first superstar to get a record deal).
The first and only rapper to have hits in 5 decades. End of discussion🤷🏿
Do you know how long a decade is😂
LL Most important!!! yes, he can take claim to this mantle. Get him on the show!!!! LL hard as Hell!!!!!
LL owns his catalog also
Based on what LL has done, he is the GOAT. L laid the blueprint for what some rappers was able to do.
Cap. 2pac is the most important rapper to ever existed and the most influential
💯
Only to yall younger folk😂
@@seansimms8503 lol
LL really is the GOAT
LL is the GOAT!
I know LL is the finest rapper of all times 😊❤
Love the question Where did Hip Hop begin for you. Your conversations are enthusiastic and I find myself reflecting even after the video for example because of yall ima go slap LL's Def Jam run and G Rap on Rawkus I feel bad I forget the album titles right now that's why yall platform so vital love what U do ❤❤❤❤
Won't argue with him sayin that. He was my first favorite rapper. And Run Dmc was my first favorite rap group.
LL, gets 💯 of my respect, the guy is leviathan.
Dope intro by the YOUNG GUNNA in the beginning I was gettin tired of " I'm so special"
Appreciate the detailed breakdown! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
Been here for rocking my peers.uncle l is goat
I love ❤️ it 🥰❤️❤️
The parents ain't playing the
Old school that much at home or in da car. Mofos playing the shit their kids are listening to
Yeah I notice Milennial parents (under 40) don't expose their children to a lot of classic 90s hip hop and r&b or even stuff before that smh. Generation X (44+ and up) does but it's split in that generation because the older side leans more r&b while the younger ones basically grew up hip hop from the the golden age on up.
1st hip hop superstar. LL is def da Goat mc..Hands down. He bridged crazy eras. Mid to late 80s. Early to mid 90's. Into the 2000. And whoever saw him being this level of an actor? That show him n Debbie Allen had was ok. Def for it's time. And he hasn't stopped elevating. Hasn't even begin to stop. LL is him. And I'm a Jigga fan. Be clear
LL is a great but the most important idk about That
Agreed
My mother had a Rodney O Joe Cooley album in da cribb and LL
I absolutely agree with what LL said. I think its a 3 man race between LL, Melle Mel, Rakim!
When I broke all the records. I reached out to everyone. I can't wait. Everyone. Same thing. But my catalog lives forever on the blockchain and web3 as NFT's. First Digital Artist; Ever. (8/25/2021)
Yea cause every artist you heard never had a trash album under their belt?
False. It was an underperforming album that got made up for with the success of Mr Smith 2 years later.
@@jaredsouza4631You talking but you ain’t saying shit.

I have a cousin in Canada that has 300 wigs...since the 70s...she has a separate room for the wigs.... 😂
LL is still rapping 🎤
We definitely know the history of hip hop being from Milwaukee and we ain't bias over here we listened to everything
I was born in 85 but used to spin and that Jordans fact is correct because he's rocking black and red Jordan 1s on the back of the "radio" album cover
