I use Duolingo to teach myself japanese and I did encounter this inserted agenda. I was learning a sentence and it was basically this. “This is john and his husband Jeff”.

Home discipling like you, I agree that I have changed from the pressure I felt early on when I educated at home. We are Graduating our third child this next year. I have re-evaluated each year and now feel a freedom that I have never had before-thank you Jesus!

Ahhh, you are a breath of fresh air, Julie! I wish I could just bottle up all your freeing ideas and remember them all throughout the homeschooling year! We also use a lot of TGATB for math, science units, handwriting, and we absolutely love all their wholesome novels. (we must have almost all of them by now). I bought the Maturation unit as well, and just use bits and pieces of it as a reference at the appropriate time with each child. (they definitely don't need to know everything all at once;-)) Thankyou so much for making this video! Cheers for the next year of homeschooling!
We have been filling our personal library with TGTB novels as well! Such wonderful treasures, especially since I have trouble finding wholesome books at the library these days
Wow, I thought I was messing up my homeschool since we have only done interest learning for over a year. But you really helped me to look at it differently and in a positive way. Thanks, things have been very hard for me and just relaxing really helps. No pressure. I'm going to collect all that my child has been doing and document it in my lesson planner. God is good.

Amen, we did the box learning too. Now I have 2 high school kids and we do a lot of read and discuss instead of sit down work. They do sit down for teaching textbooks and typing and grammar. But my kids also learn other stuff. And I consider our Friday errands and such as school. And we consider our responsibilities at church as learning. And they can do art and music whenever they want. My son has special needs and so learning is hard, so I have learned that it is best to read and discuss everything and my daughter loves that too. Awesome way to school

Amen amen amen. We been homeschooling 12 years simply is better. We have always homeschooled and I also homeschooled in high school. Went to Public school k-8th grade and then my parents pulled us out and started homeschooling. I loved it.
My first thought … I am old and have no reason to listen to this, a first with your vlogs. 2nd thought… this is really interesting how she does this! I have followed you since right before Lydia was born. 3rd thought… I wish I had been homeschooled exactly like this and wish all my grands could be. I do have a DIL who homeschools 3 of our grands and I will share this with her.

My first time here. Also my first year doing homeschool. I thought I wanted to try a more classical approach to learning, but am worried about pushing my children to a point that they hate learning! I am thankful to have stumbled upon your channel. I feel overwhelmed with my four kids and love the encouragement of moms who are handling more than I am. Welcome Amanda 💕 I’m glad you found us. For the first year especially i recommend doing minimal basics and then just enjoying being together and learning from life. It will help you set the tone that “homeschool is enjoyable!” which will make the whole process a lot better for all of you
Totally totally enjoyed and hearing how you allow your kiddos to learn naturally and to what interests them. I am a retired pre and kindergarten teacher and that is totally how we taught. Follow their lead and let them learn from that. Your kiddos show their confidence in learning as such. Great on you and Jason. Thank you for the share.

Enjoyed hearing all your info. Since this is our oldest daughter's last year of high school we are looking into options. We have found through one of our libraries they offer over 600 online continuing education courses for free. They have lots to choose from. You earn CEU's. This is offered through a larger library in a different county than ours.

You may notice from all my comments in different places that I have "spent the day with you", Julie, virtually at least ;) This video has been just what I needed to kind of put the "seal of approval" on all my thoughts whirling around. We are doing so many of the same things this year as you that have held on as our favorites through the years. My oldest has done Dave Raymond's American History and he did Modernity this past year and he has loved it... except when it came to any writing assignments or projects. He is asking to do Antiquity this coming year, but I am going to let him just watch and read and not require any of the extras. Again, trying to bring the delight back into his learning. We have liked many Compass Classroom products for my oldest. He started one of the writing courses this past spring, Writing through the Wardrobe (with the author of Bark of the Bog Owl teaching) and it was the first time he told me he was enjoying a writing class. He has talent in writing, but too much of the sentence diagramming and such trips him up. Anyway, I hope Leo will enjoy it as much as we have! I also just recently discovered Campfire Curriculum and we are using some of those units as well! If Bella ever does videos, I would love to see a video on caring for rabbits... we are going to be getting a pet rabbit in September (hasn't been born yet) and I know Bella is the expert. You can give her a nudge on that ;) We need to get going on making a hutch that will withstand -40 wind chill here!

I’m going to write down that writing course to remember for the future. It may be a good fit for Leo too. This is my first year using any Compass Classroom products so I haven’t checked out any others. So many great resources out there!

I would suggest that the first math book you had for Bella is something that all your children will benefit from once they get to that level. It is more life skills math and often not covered in other types of math. Just a suggestion.

This video is fantastic! I'm new to homeschooling my 3 children and there is so many suggestions and curriculums that it makes my head spin and I can get overwhelmed by it all. I was watching Our House and learning about RC and saw your video on the side. I'm so glad I clicked on it! Your views and how you teach your children is very much like how I wish to teach mine. Their ages are 12, 11 and almost 7 so I like how you clump your middle kids into the same age brackets as mine are. It makes very relatable for me. I've taken many notes from this video and I feel so much better and more at ease with what I will be doing, going forward. We like to watch Nest family Bible cartoons, superbook, etc and then read the passage it covered and compare to see how the show did/did not stay true to scripture. I’ve been thinking to do this with the Chosen.
Brilliant curriculum choices. Seeing how you support your elder children's interests is so inspiring, even as homeschool parents it's so hard to change our thought process of we need to pass exams we need to go to college instead of following what's in our hearts. Julie, thanks for sharing your curriculum plan! I got excited over everything you shared! I didn’t have the opportunity to home school my children. My youngest is 43. I would like a do over because I believe home schooling is better compared to what they are teaching children now days. I agree about the colleges. They are indoctrinated there and it doesn’t go along with my values. There are a few that do not do that. I love how you let each child learn the way that’s best for them. You don’t get that in public school. You and Jason are wonderful parents. Your children are lucky to have you as their parents. Continued prayers for you and your family. 🙏🏻♥️🙏🏻
Thank you Sandra! Yes there are so many great resources for homeschoolers now. Even when I was homeschooled as a child there wasn’t a whole lot of support for my mom. It’s amazing how times have changed.
I have heard about that Julia Rothman book you were referring to... the "Every Body" book. I agree with you... NOT for kids. I don't know if it's marketed toward teens or what (I can only hope it's not but people are introducing all kinds of garbage to kids these days) but that is not even appropriate for teenagers. I'm 33 and even I don't want to read it. Just looking at the cover grosses me out.
My son used Duo for Spanish for 2 years before we started to see questionable content. I am unsure if he leveled into the topics or if they only started integrating them at that time, but there were some themes that he and I were no longer okay with and we stopped. I have seen in forums that others have noticed the same trends in other languages, so I believe it is a theme in the platform as a whole, which makes sense.
It does make sense. I think eventually I’ll transition my kids to an official Latin program

Your idea about using voice texting into a notepad on your phone is awesome!! My now 25-year-old was a very reluctant writer (around age 10) but she had a lot to say so I would have her dictate to me what she wanted to say, I would write it down, and then use that as copy work. So, same idea but yours has a modern twist! Love it! I might try that with my youngest who is 11 and is also a reluctant writer. Right now, I’m doing TGTB’s Paleontology science unit with my 14 and 11 year old daughters and my 9 and 7 year old grandsons. I really like the new format with the journals. It is SO simple to use and all of the kids were so excited to do this unit. :) “Boyhood and Beyond,” is a great book!!
Yes they’ve made some great changes to the science units! I was happy to see them as well.
Awe I love Little house on the Prairie the books and the tv series!! My daughter and I are watching the tv series! We’re leaving for Central Wisconsin soon with limited internet so I’ll have to finish watching when we get back in a week!

Love it! We read as a priority, too. I have two boys, 13 and almost 17. They independently read, but we read together, as well, me to them and them to me. I currently use The Lifepac Curriculum, but we move at our own pace.

I have just 3 children not many like you do. We've homeschooled them for 9 years now. Two are girls, one is a boy. I don't know how to homeschool the boy at all. He is 12 now and he hated 'school' last year. I know something has to change but I don't even think he has a lot of delight in anything at this point. I love listening to you talk, Julie. Your homeschool sounds like a delight, something mine hasn't had for awhile, it seems like.
It may be a good year to take a homeschool “jubilee year”. My friend Amy Roberts wrote about that on her blog. If you look up her name and that term you’ll find it. Basically it’s just a year where you completely change things up. Sometimes it’s worth “losing” an educational year in exchange for a regained enthusiasm for learning. 💕
Pam Barnhill talks about how she doesn’t teach formal composition until middle school and I like that idea a lot. We do copywork, narration and dictation a lot and something new this year we are centering Bible history and science around for now is notebooking the Jodi mockabee way. She has a $13 PDF to explain it and I absolutely love the idea of simplifying things eventually and letting go of some things to use notebooking as a way to review, practice and delight in art while using other subjects as the focus. Thanks for sharing. Love seeing where other people are at mentally and I agree with your stances a lot. We also homestead and it’s hard to find homesteading channels that share their homeschool journey.
Writing with ease really helped my son build confidence in his writing. We don’t do formal writing yet but we will dip into writing and rhetoric this year for a schole approach to creative writing.
Julie, I have watched you for a while and love your take on education. I just happened to get on this morning looking for something completely different and see this, as I have cut back my TH-cam TREMENDOUSLY! Anyway! My oldest (8th grade) is A LOT like Bella. The teacher that evaluates her every year brought up alternative paths for high school since she isn't college bound either. We have zero requirements here for homeschool subjects or high school requirements. We stopped after 7th grade math and went to the Humble Math books and Simply Charlotte Mason Your Business Math. It has been a game changer for her! She is seeing how it applies to everyday life and jobs! Just wanted to suggest that for you! My daughter needs to see the practicality of things to fully grasp things. I have tried almost every math program there is for her and all of them were busts. This is the first one that she truly enjoys and is understanding. We also opened her her own checking account to keep up with. Just wanted to share! 🥰

Hi there, I love your videos they are so real. I thought you had mentioned a lady that prints and binds for a good deal but can't remember where.
I absolutely loved this video Julie. It was so refreshing! It helped solidify some things in my mind as I make decisions for the coming school year. I realized we'll be using a lot of the same things 😊 Teaching Textbooks, a variety of things from TGTB, maybe Story of the World, YWAM books, (love those!) and of course lots and lots of good books read together. My aim is always to keep it simple, I believe less is more, but it's so easy to get caught up in the rat race of having to learn certain things at a certain time... especially as my older ones are reaching high school age. I cannot even tell you how much it means to me to hear someone be so relaxed about it! It's what I really want for my children but I keep second guessing myself. My oldest is 15 and I bought what I thought we needed for him last year... he got through barely half of it. It made me feel like a failure, but I was determined not to make him slave through bookwork all day. I wanted him to have lots of free time to pursue his own interests, and he really did learn a lot on his own about video editing and computer stuff that I don't understand 😉 It's so amazing what can happen when we take a step back and entrust our children to God and watch what happens!
So thank you for every minute of this video, including your can of worms! 😀 You're the type of person I would love to have a long conversation with in real life, but for now this will have to work 😊

Thank you for sharing your heart here! There is such a great temptation to feel like the high school years have to be so serious and so packed with work. I have found in my own experience as a homeschooled high school kid that less is more. It’s much better to let your child do less… so they can enjoy it and let it really soak in, than it is to cram so much on their to do lists that all they can do is struggle to keep up and look forward to the day when it’s all over.
Keep following your instincts! You know what’s best for your kids 💕

We homeschool very similarly! And my eldest 14 yo boy is very alike yours! I through mine in level 7 since middle school is just a repeat of what they learned in grammar age, and it’s been good so far. The reader was way too easy for his reading level but everything else is very doable. I don’t follow their schedule but it’s a good program
Have you heard of the author Barbara Edtl Shelton? Her focus is delight directed learning. She’s written 7 books on the subject, has a website and speaks at conferences (C slowed that down!) She’s my sister. Your philosophies sound SO similar!!! I’ve just always wondered. :)

I’ve been reading the Tuttle Twins new history book with all of ours and the “What’s your Bias” teen book with our oldest. Highly recommend 👍🏻. Also the Brave Books I HIGHLY recommend 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.

The ywps books every month they put on a birthday sale for the heros. I grab them each month to grow our collection. They also have a book club for each month.
You are so wise in finding ways to support their learning. We had issues with Duolingo in French on the app, but not on the computer version. Have you looked at Brigham Young University (BYU)? They are a Christian university but they also offer online middle & high school classes as well as concurrent enrolment and some degrees online (mostly through their Idaho campus). I got my bachelors through their Hawaii campus so I'm happy to answer any questions about it. How do you have the kids listen to podcasts- do they have individual devices? How does your family use TH-cam for learning but not have screens on all the time?
These are great questions! It’s interesting to hear that the app version of Duolingo was different than the computer version. Good to know!
I have not checked into BYU. But I will put it on my list things to look at.
We do allow screens during the day for productive use. All of our devices are locked and only my husband and I know the code. So if a child was wanting to listen to a podcast or look something up they have to come to us and let us know what they are wanting to use the device for. We have two iPads and multiple laptops, as well as a cell phone that we got to leave at home when our older kids babysit for us. We also keep devices out in the main area to help everyone stay accountable. Technology can be a great thing when it’s used for good purposes!
You are on it julie.. no public and definitely no college- online if you have to unless you want your kids to start thinking they could change their sex , not work, and live in a socialist world and lets not forget the drugs . Your kids are perfect keep them that way . God Bless

This was an encouraging video in so many ways. I definitely find myself getting wrapped up in all the different curriculums and the need to do more and then I watch your videos and you just give such a breath of fresh air and a realism of why I homeschool. So, thank you! ☺️ I do have question, how do you keep active toddlers independently busy while you homeschool your olders?
In regards to Bella's math, I thought of something I thought I might mention...I recently discovered a math company called Denison (Denison Algebra). They have a Consumer Math course that looks really good for grades 10 and up, although they do recommend you complete their Algebra 1 and Geometry course first.

Oh, Julie! I envy you so much (in a good way, for sure😉) We don't have this precious freedom in education, in our country. It is restricted by the law. The amount of subjects, our kids have to cover and be examinated through school years, is overwhelming. Despite the interest or abilities - you just have to do it. (Languge, literature, algebra, geometry, biology, chemistry, geography, The second Languge, informatics, history.. 🤯)
Geometry and carpentry skills are what I am trying to learn more about now as a homesteader. Using Justin Rhodes, Joel salatin and plans from perma pastures farm is helpful. If she practiced working on building projects that would be SO helpful for her in her future. That is something I’m wanting to teach my kids. I keep adding to my comments haha but also follow the lady who was on Alone and has MS. She has a herbal medicine book that looks amazing!!

I was really hoping my 14 year old would want to step away from VLN, it's a homeschooling academy through our school district, and start homeschooling more like this. I let him make the decision and he wants to stick with what he's been doing. I start preschool homeschooling with my 4 year old. He's a late talker, so I'm really hoping and praying he will do good. He seems to be interested in letters and numbers, and he's always loved coloring. I figured 1 hour a day sitting at the table with his big brother will really encourage him to want to learn. I'll definitely go the route you're going with my 4 year old. Wishing i would have with my older 2 kid's...it was this Covid crap that made us pull them from in school learning. My oldest graduated this year and she's actually so glad to be done with school, she just wanted to join the working world and now can go full time. All my kid's are so different in many ways.
Good and beautiful has an assessment test just for future reference. And it’s spiral method so it will progress as the levels go up.

I took a business type math in highschool. I couldn't stand geometry so my mom found a workbook that included depreciation, mortgages, how to add & subtract, multiply & divide super fast. I have no clue what the title was because that was 15years ago😜.

Have you heard of Apprenticeship University? It’s something we are looking into for a couple of our kids. Durenda Wilson talked about them on a podcast a few months back. They might align worldview wise closer to where you’re at. Thank you for sharing so much good info! I have really enjoyed all of your content, but especially your homeschool content, over the years.

You popped up on my FYP and I think it's because we have so much in common. We are borderline unschoolers but my educational background makes it impossible for me not to plan and prep a curriculum. I just make it very flexible, mild and geared towards already known interests because I agree a lot with unschoolers they just don't agree with me. Also I have a Silas and he is 11 😂
This strategy is called relaxed homeschooling.

I don’t have children and I’m unlikely to (due to declining health) but I wish I had been raised this way as I’ve lost my love of learning from being in the public school system (plus moving between two countries during my childhood and schooling years). Do you have any advice on where to start from an adult perspective of gaining back that love of learning?
Thank you so much for sharing your heart Jessa. i’ve actually been thinking over your comment for a couple days. I believe that The motivation to learn new things is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. I would think about things that interest you even a little bit. Pick one of those and try to learn something new about it. Let that lead you to more new things to learn. The more you practice your “learning muscle” the more delight you will begin to get in the process.

My kids were using Duolingo and my mom was as well. Until she told me she saw a same sex couple in it and she stopped and so did we.
Recently I ordered my first TGTB science unit, and, while upon purchase I was basically aware what the course entails, in assembling the unit I'm struck by how dryly-written and information-heavy the course can be (and all that cutting and pasting! 🤢) As another mother preferring living books, I'm curious how you reconcile this aspect of the course. I'm also curious how you manage all the experiments -- the bane of my homeschool second only to math, heh.
I realize you're not quite there yet, but along the same lines, do you have any preliminary thoughts on high school-level science, which tends to lean on boring textbooks by default?
Thank you for another encouraging video! You always manage to bring me back to earth -- or perhaps I should say, you help release me from its hold -- in terms of expectations for my children's education.
I have used TG&TB, as well as Apologia (for HS,) science for the last 4 years and I agree with you about being dry and heavy! One of my only complaints of TG&TB (their LA used to be too heavy too but they have been working hard to balance them both.)
One way we work around it, as Julie mentioned, is by doing some sections and not others. We skip around and I also have been known to take weeks to do one lesson when it's super heavy and dry. I will check out books from the library (or ones I already own, living books) to supplement when the lesson is just *too* dry and boring. We also have gone on tangents from the curriculum and taken months to come back to the main book. It's all good! In fact, we've been doing Botany for about 2 years now on and off, usually during gardening time and seed starting. We also did the Geology Unit last year and only made it thru about half of it before our break. We'll go back to it in one week when we start up again.
As Julie said, make the curriculum work for you, don't feel constrained by it but use it to find their interests.. the rest of education is the children finding and learning what they want or they won't retain anything.

As far as TGTB science, I use it as a resource to explore a topic. I do have a child who loves cutting/pasting so she does that stuff… but the rest I use as a resource for me. I read parts of it to prompt discussion but I never feel like I *have* to read/do anything in a curriculum. I consider them just an aid to me, the “lead learner” in my home.
Oh also… for high school science. I’m still working this out. Bella has just fully immersed herself in animal husbandry, which means she’s studying so many science disciplines on her own so I haven’t felt a need to supplement anything else for her at this point.
Leo just turned 14 so we’re just at the beginning with him. He is almost done with this Physics and Chemistry course: allinonehomeschool.com/science-year-4/ He really enjoyed it.

Welcome! So glad you joined us. I have found that when you delay starting a more “formal” homeschooling it actually can be a lot better than the child. As they get older it’s a lot easier for them to pick up concepts. I think overall as a culture we introduce things too early and the child just has to work a lot harder to learn it than they would if they’d waited a couple years to begin

Agree with not buying “curriculum” that incorporates the counter culture’s indoctrination on required victimhood. (And other doctrines that undermine our healthy beliefs.)
Does your state have laws that tell you what subjects you must cover each school year? Do you have to keep a end of the school year portfolio with attendence and quarterly grade record? We have to do this in Kentucky. We do get to choose our curriculum though.
Hi Missouri we keep samples of work and log hours, but we aren’t required to show any of it or check in with anyone
I love your channel and have been watching you for years! I'm homeschooling for the first time this year and I'm really nervous. I just had my 5th baby who is 6 weeks and colicky, if he's not nursing, he is crying. Any tips on handling schooling with a high needs baby?
I wear my newborns in a baby wrap (a moby or sleep wrap or something like that) almost all day long. They are less fussy and I can get things done with both hands.
Also, if I have a high stress situation like you have now I don’t do a regular homeschool routine. There is no law that says you have to homeschool on a public school schedule. You can start on January. Or you could just pick one subject to start and add a second one in a month or two… gradually working your way up. You are in charge! Try to forget everything you have been taught about what “school” is. There are so many ways to learn. This might just be the season for reading books to your kids and letting them play or draw while they listen. The rest can come later 💖

Homeschool regulations vary by state. In Missouri we keep a log of what we do/how long it takes, plus a portfolio of work samples

I'm knew here and your approach is different from mine, so how do you deal with high school and credits for getting a diploma, etc...? how do you keep up with that? I guess you have highly motivated kids, too, since they search and learn on their own?
I recommend this book: amzn.to/3vwg4zf for documenting high school in a way that colleges would accept/appreciate. It’s a step by step book that makes it easy!

How do you keep track of hours with so many? I’m still struggling to remember to keep up with MO logging after moving here two years ago. Especially for unschooling subjects.
The simplest thing to do is just keep a notebook open on your table so that it is easy to write things down as the day goes by. Just do a quick note of what’s been done and how long was spent on it. It does not need to be elaborate! If there are subjects that are done the same every day just write that once at the beginning of the notebook so that you don’t have to keep rewriting it every day. You can fill it in later if needed.
