From a rather small boat anchor to a great running little machine, thank you I was truly at my wits end. You saved my sanity and my reputation. My customer was told that her Bernina was a sealed unit and never needed oiling, everything was varnished over and all it did was hum when the pedal was pressed. Hours of cleaning later and it is reborn.
Many thanks David G. Morgan St. Albans VT.

Hi Neil thanks to you I figured my Bernina 530-2 problems out ! since i bought it 8 years ago
I haven`t sewn all that I planned to but after making new curtains for the kitchen the intrest for sewing woked again especially since the machine did allright sewing the cotton cloth for the curtains, I found som old prodjects but decided to sew some vests and underwear in very thin
jeresey the machine emediatly started started skipping when zig zaging the strechy fabric and I remembered why I didn`t sew in such a long time.
then I checked out how to adjust return motion and ended up with a machine that did not sew just chewing the thread and piecering fabric.
Anyway I made a clamp from wood to adjust lift loop and when I understood the problem s thanks to your brilliant videos and knowledge of thoose machines I didn´t fully apreciat the
Bernina quality before now ! I`ve sewn thin nylon and swimwear lycra with beatyfull result thanks to you.
    Greetings from Sweden .

      Hello Johan Ohrvik:
My congratulations for your success with your 530-2 Bernina. In your case I can see that loop lift was off as your machine was a second hand purchase. It sounds like you have done an excellent job resolving your problem. I'd like to add to my reply to your post a note for others regarding loop lift settings on 530 and 730 Bernina sewing machines. As follows:
"Do not assume that loop lift is out of adjustment on a 530-2 as it is very likely not. I suggest that one look for other simpler problems. For example, look at the needle you are using. A slightly warped needle can cause skipped stitches. If the clamp screw has repeatedly been over-tightened by the use of a screwdriver, the needle may not hold it's position. If the needle height had been changed by a neophyte of sorts, this will also cause skipped stitched especially on the right side. Go to the needle height explanation and see what the hook point looks like. Loop lift will only be faulty if the setting had been changed or the fixing screws loosened at some point. It is nearly an impossibility for loop lift to come out of time under normal conditions.
Thank you for your inquiry and best wishes,
      Neal

Thank you so much for sharing! My Bernina 830 stopped zigzagging and I couldn't figure out why. While following your video, I determined the pivot axle was seized or, at best, filthy! After cleaning and oiling the entire shaft my machine is running smoother than ever.
Thank you for giving me the insight I needed to fix my machine! It's sentimental to me (it was my grandma's) and would be expensive to replace.

Thank you for the amazing detailed video! I didn’t understand any of it but that’s ok :) I was watching it to hopefully find out if maybe the timing is the reason my 830 record model is tearing upper thread very often when I am going slow turning all sorts of corners m while sewing dolls etc. if you know what it could be-I greatly appreciate your response!

Thank you very much Neal for your very quick reply and the different informations you gave to me : well understood for the different steps and that's what I've started with. But the problem is still the same : the feed dog blocks in the advance movement back and forth. As the fist bead starts for the reverse bead, there is no sewing advance : the feed dog lifts, but it doesn't move back and forth. The needle stays on stitching the same spot. Moving the toggle lever doesn't change anything. Thank you for your help. Sorry for my bad english, I'm living in France.

This one takes a little finesse along with a strong solvent like lacquer thinner or even acetone. Great care must be applied so as to prevent the solvents from attacking one's skin and avoiding vapors. Also, do allow the solvents to spill over onto the dials, knobs, Do not use pliers on the knob to prevent damage to the knob.
      1. Remove the top cover
      2. Use a 6mm wrench to loosen the 6mm hex head screw on the needle position detent block found on the end of the needle position shaft just inside of the machine. Add some solvent and try and work the needle position knob left and right until the shaft is loosened enough to slide out of the machine. Clean off the shaft so that no sticky residues remain.. Clean out the 6mm bore using a q-tip with solvent until clean. insert the shaft back in place and check for any remaining stickiness. Repeat the process until clean. Reassemble and make sure that only the slightest axial play can be felt when detent block is tightened. Make sure that the hex screw is tightened on the flat on the shaft end.

Dear Mr Lund, thank you very much for your high level and very helpful instructions . Could you please give me an advice on an issue on my last purchased 730 Record . It’s a 1963 model, and after cleaning, oiling, motor maintenance, it's working very well. I unfrozed the buttonhole mechanism (17-18) successfully ; and then I tried to perform a buttonhole following carefully manual instructions, but an issue appeared I couldn’t fix : on start of stitching, the cloth didn’t move at all. Actually the feed dog lifts up and down, but there is no advance. I don’t understand because the feed dog works perfectly back and forth in any other functions with knob lever (22). Thank you very much for your help.

      OK, here we go:
      1. Engage the small buttonhole buttonhole lever. (This little lever is one of two levers that are located on the front right corner just below the hand-wheel). The little lever has a buttonhole symbol on it.
      2. Pull down the toggle lever of the stitch width dial and swing the lever against the frame stop on the right. (stop=little brass eccentrics on the machine face.)
      3. Lift the stitch length lever up until the lever stops.
You are now ready to begin sewing a reverse bead (first bead).
      4. Begin sewing the first bead to your desired length.
      5. Stop sewing with the needle up to your desired length.
      6. To bartack, swing the toggle lever all the way to the left hand stop and then hold down the material tight to the needle plate to prevent the material from feeding. Tack no more than four times.
      7. Second bead: Swing the toggle lever back to the right hand stop and sew an equal length of the previous bead.
      8. Bartack: Repeat #6.
      9. Tack left: To tack or lock the bead end to prevent the bead from unraveling, pull the toggle lever out and away from the stops and then swing to the far left position (straight stitch position). Lift the stitch length lever up to its stop. Tack two or three times.
*Always use a new 705H needle size 80 or 90. You should use the following needle brands. F&L Bachmann Swiss made for Bernina, Schmetz, Groz Beckert. Needle quality is paramount for sewing buttonholes in Bernina machines. A used, slightly warped needle will typically counteract bead densities.
This may seem confusing so perhaps I should make a video for 730 buttonholes.

The 540 machine is much the same as the 530 but differ as noted: Double transverse rotary hook whereas the 530 uses the CB type of oscillating hook, 540 has a flat bed, and associated components. Pretty big differences. Tools can be made for adjusting all Bernina machines.

Enjoyed video, very information. Can you do video on a Bernina Activa 130? Mine keep going out of the hook timing and within a couple hours using it goes out again. Repair shop is 60 miles away, one way, and each time I'm charged $120. Getting very expensive. If it's something I can do myself it would be very helpful.

Thank you, Neal! You do an amazing job of explaining things. We have 2 730's and 2 830's. They have been in our family for generations. We had one of the 830's serviced just prior to moving and have found that it is totally messed up. It is not tuned correctly and, breaks threads constantly. I am very technically inclined and have serviced many kinds of machines. I am not afraid to dig into a machine. We now live out in the middle of nowhere and don't have the ability to easily get our sewing machines serviced. So i have decided to do it myself. I was wondering if you know where I can purchase some of the specialty tools you reference jn your videos?
Also, the button hole knob on this 830 is totally frozen. Would you know off hand what the most likely cause of that could be? I have since been able to get some movement, by cleaning and lubricating. It is still very rough and difficult to move but i can now fully rotate it.

I am having an issue where my Bernina 830 won't move up and down. I got it on ebay but it was just serviced before it was shipped to me and I've seen a video of it working taken right before it was shipped. I've done all the trouble shooting I can find online and from friends, it is out of bobbin mode. (bobbin mode does work) It also can move left to right. But any piece associated with the needle moving up and down is rock solid not budging. Do you have any videos about this topic?

Hi there, I've got a Bernina 730, I've changed the stack cam gear as well as the vertical gear, I also adjusted the needle timing from the vertical gear and the zigzag and straight stitches are working well, however when I use the lever to use the other patterns, it doesn't do the other patterns correctly because the timing of the needle is different. Could you help me to tell me what I did wrong and what I should do, thanks L.

How do you clean the pivot axel to unfreeze it?

    • @nealiund7284
      @nealiund7284 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Stitch width @ zero, ...needle position right, ....loosen the fixing screw in the main frame just below the pivot support, ....lift the pivot support pin out from the top of the frame but do not force up. With one's hand on the handwheel and turning the needle bar down a bit so as not to prevent the needle bar from hanging up in the clearance hole in the top of the frame, you will find the sweet spot for lifting up and swing away the needle bar support to the left. Caution: do not allow the needle bar support frame to be forced out of position as the alignment could be compromised (a technical adjustment).... Loosen the small set collar on the pivot axle and remove the pivot support. Loosen the pivot axle screw and carefully drive out the axle. Clean with lacquer thinner, brake cleaner, etc to remove the oil varnishes. Reassemble and follow the instructions for setting needle position front to back in the needle plate.
