He lost most of his power and connections with those two plays. It was nice to see Vito's protégée going against Vito's son. Two men mentored and tutored by Vito, the master chess player. Roth believed Cuba and Batista would last because that’s the way it has always been. Michael noticed the rebels were poor and fighting for livelihood, he knew they wouldn’t give up.
Actually the real reason why Michael defeated Hyman Roth is because in the trial, Frank Pentangeli's brother from Sicily came to the trial to make Frankie guilty and despite the fact that Michael defeated Hyman Roth but Roth severely damaged Michael by his marriage to Kay to end, his brother Fredo betrayed Michael in which Michael had to kill his own brother, in which he regretted in Part III and let's not forget that Michael and Kay's daughter was killed for the consequences of Michael's Mafia business. One of the main reasons H. Roth targeted Michael C. for assassination: the killing of Mo Green, who was Roth’s closest friend and confidant. Roth never forgave Michael for the killing of Green (although he falsely claims that it was “just business “) and took it personally. Since Green’s death, Roth secretly harbored wrath and swore revenge against Michael for the killing of she considered his brother. “I loved that man as much as any man…”

Because if so it seems that would easily trace the authorities to Michael
It’s implied Rocco like Hagen had been bribed with a lucrative Las Vegas position. Non of this is verified but if you look deep enough it’s all there. Rocco was the first security to report to Michael after the assassination attempt and he says he’ll try to get them alive. Rocco volunteers at the end to do a suicide mission because Michael finds out he was also being bribed so if Rocco does the job like Frank killed himself he saves himself embarrassment and his family gets taken care of.
I like in the beginning(like a minute in) of this how rothstein is laying down on the couch(shirt of displays self confidence etc) and Micheal is sitting there. Roth touches his arm or wrist and he looks like he's not sure if Micheal is ok with it? Distracting him with a index finger from what he was doing. Rothstein is actually checking his pulse. Guess if it ain't normal Micheal dont know, and if it's abnormal he know he's the enemy? I watched this movie several times and learned new things almost every time. For instance the failed Hit on Pentagelli was not actually a failed Hit. It played out exactly like Roth had planned. This was the backup plan when the first attempt on Micheal did not work. Having Micheal jailed for Racketeering and murder would be a good conciliation prize if he could not actually kill Micheal. When they put the garrotte around Franks neck and say “Micheal Corleone says hello”, that never happened in the hits of the first movie. But it makes sense to do if your intention is not to kill Frank. Then when the Cop comes into a closed bar uninvited and interrupts the assassination, that was too coincidental not to be a setup. Then, not only is Frank not killed but neither is Ciecci who is run over with a car during the fire fight. The reason this is important is that this is the only move that Hymen made that Micheal did not see coming. It is plain that bringing Frank’s brother over just in the nick of time was a last minute improvisation to stop Frank from testifying. This demonstrates that Hymen has several plans going on in his head at the same time
One question I have is who really was Johnny Ola? He is sicilian so was he a member of one of the five families and he just had close business ties with Roth? Or did he work with Roth directly and was he his #2? Roth despite being wealthy, powerful, and influential was not an Italian Mafia member due to being Jewish so I dont get why he would have a Sicilian reporting to him directly.
In regard to Roth being a superior to a Sicilian whilst being a Jew, you have to look beyond La Cosa Nostra itself. In reality both Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel, both being Jewish, were high ranking members of the National Crime Syndicate and very close to Charles ‘Lucky’ luciano who was instrumental in founding the NCS. Even though Lansky and Siegel could never become members of one of the five families they still had a hell of a lot of influence within the NCS and the therefore the Italian-American Mafia along with the Jew and Irish mobs.
Let's not forget when Michael learns his brother was the traitor to the family when his association with Roth and Ola was revealed that was the final link to Roth's plan to remove him.
That is right. he murdered himself as Tom told him that his family's safety could not be guaranteed. I don't think he would have committed suicide otherwise, that's why I say he murdered himself. A subtle point, I guess. Or maybe not. His position in the bathtub is based on a painting called "The Death of Marat," I am told.
Roth's biggest mistake was manipulating Fredo with the help of Johnny Ola and underestimating the high morale of a mob family. He was overconfident that he had the upper hand over Michael. Roth may or may not have known that Michael set a trap for him regarding plotting Frank Pentangeli’s death. Nevertheless, Roth saw the opportunity to frame Michael by arranging the hit and having high-ranked members of Michael's family, such as Pentangeli, testify against Michael and convict him before a state committee. In my opinion, Roth's overconfidence led him to reveal his vengeance for Moe Green to Michael before striking the killing blow. However, Roth failed to realize that in the tradition of the Sicilian Mafia, Italian loyalty is sacrosanct above anything else. Michael arranged for Frank’s brother Vincenzo to appear before his brother, leaving Frank no choice but to contradict his testimony, incriminate himself for perjury, and await his demise from his attempted betrayal.
This is one of the cases where the series is inaccurate. Mayer Lansky, the real Lansky, died a natural death. He was the Mafia' supreme financial and business consilieri.
It wasnt Roth getting angry at Michael for killing Moe Greene that triggered Michael's personal vendetta against Roth. Michael wasnt scared of Roth getting revenge on him. Michael is sure he can outwit, outplay and outlast Roth. It was Roth getting Fredo to betray Michael that triggered this ultimate vendetta.
Just like his now deceased friend Moe Greene, he said too much and said who his allies were, individuals who so happen to be Corleone enemies. Unless he did not know, which I can't understand how, Michael's almost fatal mistake was not hitting Roth in the original movie when he took the family heads and Moe Greene. I guess that not doing so is what gave birth to part two. Seems logical enough.
Fredo didn’t just inadvertently set up Michael at his own house. He was still involved in Cuba. He tries to play innocent and of course he let it slip about Johnny Ola, but that wasn’t all. When Michael’s silent bodyguard Busetta was attempting Roth’s assassination, Fredo somewhat heard about it and “went to get a stronger drink” when Michael asked where he was going. Moments later, an Army of Cuban soldiers marched into Roth’s sick bay and saw Busetta attempt assassination him and he was shot to death. Fredo set that up! And Roth just got up and left setting Michael up with the committee hearings, then Fredo confessed to Michael one of the men on the committee was on Roth’s payroll. Michael told Fredo that was it. He was a dead man once his mother died.
For Michael to continue his investigation of Roth it was particularly difficult because he knew if it were true he would have to accept that his own brother Fredo betrayed the family and would have to die.
Pentangli's attempted hit, was an almost exact enactment of Larry Gallo's attempt by Carmine Persico at a Brooklyn bar, during daytime hrs- where a cop walked in n botched the hit.
Roth’s biggest mistake was not sending me $1. Do yourself a favor and don’t make the same mistake Roth made. It’s only a buck. You got it. I need it. You might as well send it to me. Don’t know how to get it to me? That’s your problem, pal… lol… just send it.
We all know why Vito didn’t trust him. I’ve lived in Manhattan my whole life and you learn very quickly in your younger years to never trust those people. Never. Would sell a family member for a buck.
I don't know if Roth made a mistake as such. You could argue that he should have enjoyed his retirement. He didn't live large (judging by his house in Miami) but he wanted the Cuban deal to be his legacy and got greedy. His greed allowed him to get upset that Mike killed Moe Greene and he wanted revenge for that, in that scene he played his hand which was likely very unusual. In that way he made a mistake underestimating Mike, however at his age and with his health he really didn't have much to live for so if he wins and kills Mike at the house then he can do the Cuba deal without him, if he loses and dies, well he was 67 (and a very ill 67 at that) so in reality had 3 or 4 years at best.
Hyman Roth was a tactical idiot compared to Michael Corleone!! Michael was caught off guard early with the attempted assassination at his home. From then on, he outmaneuvered Roth at every turn. Pressing him about not giving the order on Pentangeli. Roth immediately blurted out about his friend Moe Greene and his assassination. Even giving Michael the ultimatum about the money required for the deal. Vito's advice to Michael about "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer," had never been more brilliantly carried out. Roth's plans are as clear as "Tracing Paper," from minute one. The entire premise in the Godfather trilogy is that no one is smarter or more cunning than Michael Corleone. Michael played chess. ROTH PLAYED CHECKERS. Simple as that.
You didn't mention the sex show where Fredo talks about Johnny Ola knowing these places like the back of his hand, when he supposedly had never met him before.
Biggest pothole of the film because it kind of doesn’t make any sense. If the plan was to sow distrust of Michael and Frank how would they do that when they planed to kill him? Did they plan the cop walking in?
roth played his strongest hand. it didn't work. if he had instead done nothing, not play his hand at all, he would've been extinct soon enough. it's like the end of Risk.
No - it was not a ploy, Frankie just survived the attempt. The flip came because one of the rosato brothers said "Michael Corleone sends his regards" wanting Frankie to think the hit was ordered by Mike. Roth needed Pentangelli out the way so he could control New York and wanted Michael DEAD - not in prison.
How could that be? They set the stage up to kill him. They didn’t plan the for the cop to come in? So if the cop no shows and they kill Frank like originally planned how does that work? Probably the biggest plot hole in the film to be honest because you can’t twist it any which way to make it make sense.
when Michael went to the club in Havana with Fredo to see the erotic show, Fredo let it slipped that it was Alioli that first took him there, but he had previously stated to Michael that he had never met Alioli. that's when Michael realised something was afoot with Hyman and Fredo.
He without a doubt had an idea when they speak at outside before that. Michael thinks Fredo knows what’s real long going on, when Fredo says that in the club that’s when Michael had him dead to rights. On top of that the army going upstairs to kill Michael’s assassin attempt on Roth gave Fredo away because only Fredo knew Michael was attempting to take out Roth in Cuba. Once Michael sees the army storming through the party to go upstairs that’s another way he found out.
He under estimated michaels intelligence and vented about moe Greene being murdered. Right then and there mike knew it was roth who tried to kill him. And old man that lost his edge, and paid the price.

The Raid on Mara Lago by the FBI was like a Godfather scene. Many parts right out of the godfather.
None....Michael was just a better don than Roth!!!
Making Cersei to do the walk of shame.
At least it wasnt over a bag of crack or some kicks
His biggest mistake was telling everyone his name is Hymen
Roth was old and terminal and didn't have much time left. So, he was a little hasty.
Hyman. Your name is Hyman.
0:05 "...and sealed his UNANIMOUS power within the Mafia..." Wrong use of word!
The 2 million never made it to the island.
You didn't mention the sex show where Fredo talks about Johnny Ola knowing these places like the back of his hand, when he supposedly had never met him before.
He double Crossed Vito's Family
Hyman Roth was made by young Vito in NY
Rothstein, Roth, Mo Green. Upstanding, outstanding Americans.
I could never figure out if the pentangele hit was deliberately botched or not
Biggest pothole of the film because it kind of doesn’t make any sense.
He just couldn’t sell it
"cunningness" is not a word.
It is, actually…
@@BigAC84 I wrong. U right.
Wrong - Roth's attempt on Pentangelli was not a real attempt but a ploy to flip Pentangelli
Probably the biggest plot hole in the film to be honest because you can’t twist it any which way to make it make sense.
what is it with all the flies going across every scene?
Michael moves to Lake Tahoe not Las Vegas.
.. and next: An ad for Armani fragrance! Ahahhahahah!!!
Hells Kitchen is not the same neighborhood as Little Italy.
The Orange appears when death is near. 8:16
when Michael went to the club in Havana with Fredo to see the erotic show, Fredo let it slipped that it was Alioli that first took him there, but he had previously stated to Michael that he had never met Alioli. that's when Michael realised something was afoot with Hyman and Fredo.
Roth = Meyer Lansky
Mo Green = Bugsy Seagal
He got mad
👍🏻
He under estimated michaels intelligence and vented about moe Greene being murdered. Right then and there mike knew it was roth who tried to kill him. And old man that lost his edge, and paid the price.
Hyman knew that Mike would have him whacked because he didn't capitalize names properly.
molasses out of Canada...
😂
No molasses out of Canada. Whiskey was never illegal in Canada- Canadian Whiskey is corn, rye and wheat. Joe Kennedy helped Seagrams expand production before prohibition.
Thinking a Jew is smarter than a Sicilian.😊😊😊
Хитрый и изворотливый Хайман Рот тебе не одолеть Майкла он идет шаг вперёд идёт.
Heyman Roth was a Jew.... just sayin'. Wink-wink, nudge-nudge. 😆
Rocco was a top guy in the Corleone family and most likely known to the government. Why wasn’t he immediately arrested for planning his murder?
Remember, that testimony about the Corleone Family was sabotaged. The FBI wouldn't have a thing out of him.
