I purchased a cold steel recon tanto back in the early 1980’s along with a South African survival knife by Chris Reeve (made from a solid piece of D2? Steel) I took both to France with me when I joined the French Foreign Legion in 1988 and they accompanied me on various operations throughout Africa. Everyone I served with or under, wanted to buy my knives but I never relented, despite being offered a small fortune. Sadly I did sell them after leaving the legion, something I still regret today.
Chris Reeve hollow handle survival knives were made from A2 tool steel. They were very popular in the South African forces. A friend of mine had worked with him at a company in SA and had one of the very first ones made. While I was in the service I had a later model that was unfortunately lost. I wish I still had that knife.
Man, I can't believe how much time has passed! I was SO young it took me from 89 to 1990 to save up and buy my Tanto. Still one of things by my bedside. Doesn't look like the one in the video of course, in those days even the hilt was designed as a weapon.
I've been a Cold Steel fan for almost as long as the company has been around. I've had more than a dozen of their products over the years and have never been disappointed in their quality or usefulness.
I've been carrying Cold Steel for many years and am an especially big fan of their tantos. They are as good as advertised if taken proper care of. Nothing better for the money.
You don't even need to take care of them.. I've had a cold steel tanto in my wood wagon for about a decade now in rain, snow, and heat, banging around the trailer and I can always depend on it..
"Innovator or mall ninja?" Nobody proves better than Lynn Thompson that you can absolutely be both at the same time. Cold Steel's product line is full of blades that are all three of excellent quality, highly effective, and thoroughly ridiculous.
Only three knives have ever graced my outdoors kit: my grandfather's ka-bar, my survival knife purchased from Jimmy Lile while was still alive, and my cold steel recon tanto. It's an amazing knife!
Cold Steel does make some more extreme designs, but that’s their vibe. They also make the AD-10. Literally one of the best carry knives ever made. It’s cool that you can go a bit wild and get a quality knife, rather than gas station junk, that still looks a bit grandiose.
Lynn is arguably the most influential “knife maker” of all time. He set new standards for what a tool older history should and can do. He is definitely and inarguably the most innovative man to ever produce knifes.
awesome video! I’m a knife maker and love cold steel knives. SOG, not so much. Cold Steel has a proprietary heat treating method for 440C that is legendary. Wish I knew their secret. The drop forged series of knives are worthy of betting your life on.
SOG used to be a military favorite, just like Gerber. But in the last 25 years, both Gerber and SOG have sent all their orders to China for production instead of USA made. Price point and cheap steel and slapdash construction became their motto. Only recently did SOG decide to reverse directions as they saw their brand value in the sewer and decide to make some of their gear in the US and elevate their quality control.
love all my cold steel knives. you cant beat them for the value/price/quality imo. i have this tanto and its one of my favorites. i have it set up to carry in a shoulder harness sheath under a long sleeve in the cold months. keep on keeping on Mr. Lynn
My first cold steel was the recon folder. It was a razor, and i loved that knife! Unfortunately, i lost it, but it turned me into a cold steel fan. I definitely wanna add the kobun to my collection!
Out of all of the knives I have owned, Cold Steel has THE most practical and robust steel, scales, and lockup I have ever used on all of their knives. They might not all be super pretty, but they WORK and they're tough as nails.
I have a cold steel kukri machete and a cold steel to light pocket knife and I’ve been using them for the past 6 years and they’re still holding on to this day. These are considered some of the more “cheap” knives they offer but honestly if they’ve lasted this long I imagine their more expensive options should be good as well.
Bought my first ColdSteel knife about 3 years ago, from constant heavy use and absolute bare minimum maintenance It has yet to have any issues. Not that one single account will make much of a difference, I can surely say that most all of the standard knives that ColdSteel sells will not bend or break within any sort of reasonable use. They also hold an edge incredibly well, taking very little wear over some very intensive usage.
When a good friend of mine was leaving for the Army (he eventually served as a Ranger), I gave him a Cold Steel Recon Tanto as a going away present. After Basic, he was eventually allowed to carry it with his gear on-duty, and still has it today. He has since designed a couple of knives and other tools of his own, too.
I have a very old Cold Steel tanto that I used to cut steel parachute cords on flares. I rarely needed to sharpen it, it never chipped and still holds an edge like it was new. Best knife I've ever owned.
My EDC pocketknife is a CS Code 4, and has been for almost 10 years. I always carry a CS fixed blade when going hiking or camping. I've never been disappointed.
I have a Cold Steel Kobun Tanto. It feels like it is built like a tank, I got it because it was on sale and I wanted a fixed blade that I could carry. Definately, one of my nicest knives I own.
I have carried multiple Cold Steel Knives for the last 15 years. They have never failed on me I've usually failed on them either losing them or just swapping them out because I find another cold steel knife I like LOL. I keep a cold steel Kobun in my backpack at all times and my favorite knife that I have that's never let me down is my cold steel AK-47 and my Cold Steel Recon 1 clip point. I have the cold steel Special Forces shovel and I've used it for a few minor yard jobs and it's been outstanding and my 1917 Cold Steel Cutlass is one of my best swords
I rock a Recon Tanto on my duty belt scout-carry style. It was featured in Elysium when Sharlto Copley's character stabbed Matt Damon's character in the gut. I had to have it. It's truly a beast. I've literally cut through RV doors with it.
@@TigerMethodSeduction Well uh, that's literally how you'd cut through a door, yes. I'd really, really love to hear the "whole story" from the OP. The way he says "duty belt" implies he did it in an emergency situation - which puts the story firmly in the "cap" category.

I have carried a Ti-Lite since i was 14, broke the tip on one, but got it reshaped and still works good! I have the Kobun and love it! So thin and weildy. I took some red paracord and hollowed it out and did a "samurai" wrap on the handle, it looks really good!
0:47 "satellite phones" dude you literally showed a picture of a Thales 148 MBITR radio, not even remotely a SatPhone. If you don't KNOW what something is, don't GUESS and actually do real RESEARCH
First, I love Cold Steel knives. They’re durable and affordable. But, I refuse to believe any operator would carry a Kobun tanto into combat. It’s the cheapest CS Tanto, in cost and materials. The Recon Tanto and SRK knives are superior to the Kobun in every way.
I believe it. Most soldier guys don't really care about their knife and the kobun is concealable and slim. They just want something there in case they need it
Seconded. MidwayUSA also has their canes, sword canes, staves, etc. which Amazon doesn't carry. Cold Steel City Stick is an amazing defensive tool (and a nice cane) for under $50 at the moment.
How can one associate the "UNBREAKABLE" word with the product of a company that officially considers batoning to be abuse!?!? There are so many knives in this world that cover hammering with a steel hammer under their warranty, while Cold Steel qualifies even batoning with a wooden log as abuse! I am a Cold Steel fan. I like their price-to-performance ratio and their large variety of cool products, including many innovations. But when it comes to indestructibility, their knives are not really compatible with such claims.
@@knifestory I just came across your channel. How about making a video about how much the knife industry has changed over the past 25 years? I purchased a Cold Steel Recon Tanto made of the Carbon V steel years ago, and have used it for survival, hunting and recreation here in Wyoming and have never had any issues with edge retention, strength or durability. I gave my daughter an SRK many years ago and at first, she used it for hunting and other outdoor uses, but as she is a very successful media person now, the SRK has been relegated to slicing tomatoes, etc. in her kitchen! I have other Cold Steel products and I always recommend them to anyone needing an edged tool. We can only hope the high quality continues under the new owners.
HaHa
That's funny to read because
I bought one of those years ago and was going to sell it
a while back, and the interested party was giving me
a ration of s*** because he
declared that there wasn't any
such thing as a "MADE IN USA"
Carbon V Recon Tanto.
Even emailed the tang etching
photo
I carried mine for about a year
because of no security in the
detached employee parking lot
I've had a carbon recon tanto for quite awhile, never had any problems.
I got a cold steel demko recon hawk throwing tactical axe. 65mn steel. It's a must.
@@maxpinson5002 i worked at a walmart that closes at night because its in a bad area and they told me i couldnt bring my knife to work, i attached my car keys to it and brought it every day, what they gonna do? attack a guy thats ready to defend himself? lol
Yes
I eventually had to change over
to a less obvious knife.
There was a couple of vehicle
break-ins, and one mugging, but
they wouldn't hire a security guard
and didn't want any of the employees defending themselves
I purchased a cold steel recon tanto back in the early 1980’s along with a South African survival knife by Chris Reeve (made from a solid piece of D2? Steel)
I took both to France with me when I joined the French Foreign Legion in 1988 and they accompanied me on various operations throughout Africa.
Dang that Chris reeve would probably be worth a pretty penny nowadays
What did you think of the FFL? I'm strongly considering.
Regrets: I traded my Tweaked HK91 where I could drive nails offhand through the 200m iron sights. New US laws and all... For a Glock 22.
But, what I have done before, I can do again...
I used to love getting their dvds in the mail. I'd watch them just for fun. They make an excellent cheap pocket knife
I've been carrying Cold Steel for many years and am an especially big fan of their tantos. They are as good as advertised if taken proper care of. Nothing better for the money.
The quality of the Bushman and GI Tantos has SIGNIFICANTLY declined since Cold Steel got bought out
You don't even need to take care of them.. I've had a cold steel tanto in my wood wagon for about a decade now in rain, snow, and heat, banging around the trailer and I can always depend on it..
@@baddestmofoalive I find that hard to believe considering both models were always manufactured in China. 🤣 Taiwanese Cold Steel is best Cold Steel
@@ColdSpyderBuck Taiwan isn't China, you absolute regard.
The AD-10 and AD-15 are two of my favorite knives.
I have 2 SRK's and a Recon Tanto in Carbon V and can't kill 'em!!!
Lynn
I've been carrying the cold steel ti-lite for about a decade now and I absolutely love it
such a great video! If there would not be CS i would never made videos as well, Lynn inspired me a lot 12 years ago
My favourite CS fixed blade is my Warcraft Tanto in CPM 3V, i still reckon it's one the best knives they've come up with.
My first cold steel was the recon folder. It was a razor, and i loved that knife! Unfortunately, i lost it, but it turned me into a cold steel fan. I definitely wanna add the kobun to my collection!
Absolute must have knife. Great price on it too.
Got my first Recon Tanto in '95. Loved Cold Steel ever since.
Ive never been disappointed or unimpressed by a single Cold Steel knive ive ever bought
Out of all of the knives I have owned, Cold Steel has THE most practical and robust steel, scales, and lockup I have ever used on all of their knives. They might not all be super pretty, but they WORK and they're tough as nails.
I have a few Cold Steel weapons, they're some of the most rugged blades I have
I've been a cold steel product owner since 1992 and I'm very happy with all dozen + ones I have today including the recon tanto
It’s a pointy pry bar with one sharp side and it gets wicked sharp.
Love my kobun, i even bought a replacement one, the old one is about half as thick from attrition
So glad I found your channel this is great thank you!
My Recon 1 has single-handedly cut through an oak 4x4. It's a beast.
any other knife and I'd say "ehhh idk", but a cold steel? i buy it
I have a very old Cold Steel tanto that I used to cut steel parachute cords on flares. I rarely needed to sharpen it, it never chipped and still holds an edge like it was new. Best knife I've ever owned.
Lynn is a legend in the industry. Anyone who says otherwise is just a hater. His impact and success are undeniable.
This is a great video you did a nice job putting this together, subscribed!
Tim wells is one of my heroes. If you want to see cold steel in action, just watch his videos.
I like him too.
Great video, Lynn is a cool guy and I've been buying Cold Steel forever
BTW please make video about the US Army Special Forces' graduation Yarborough Knives?
Really good video! Great knife history info!
Wich one is the most difficult to loose?
@NikolaosKorelis my new cold steel Espada large is the most difficult to lose
Honestly have never been disappointed in a cold steel knife. They aren't remarkable sometimes but have always done what I needed them to
I rock a Recon Tanto on my duty belt scout-carry style. It was featured in Elysium when Sharlto Copley's character stabbed Matt Damon's character in the gut. I had to have it. It's truly a beast. I've literally cut through RV doors with it.
Cut through doors 😂😂 no. You have never done that.
@@CadillacDriverIt's easily doable, try it
@@CadillacDriver by cut through I assume he means stabbed it and dragged it
@@TigerMethodSeduction
Well uh, that's literally how you'd cut through a door, yes. I'd really, really love to hear the "whole story" from the OP. The way he says "duty belt" implies he did it in an emergency situation - which puts the story firmly in the "cap" category.
@@CadillacDriver that's fair I see what you're saying lol. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he meant he was just fucking around a stabbed a junk RV or something
Been a cold steel user since 04. They make good knives. The oss, the ti-lite, the skc etc.
I just love this channel
Could you make a video about the Eickhorn SEK Knifes?
Very famous short combat daggers for germanys special forced that got so famous they got civilian legal versions and even a kitchen knife made out of

They (Cold Steel) NEED to revamp these Tanto fixed blades to CPM Magnacut steel with 61-61 HRC
Meh, their 3v is plenty good. But, the corrosion resistance of magnacut would be great.
The 4max Scout is like a folding hatchet. Seriously tough knife for camping and fire prep. The lawman and the verdict are great EDC knives. The tuff lite mini is great for any keychain. So many great knives out of these guys and plenty of practical designs alongside the mall ninja stuff.
Just the perfect knife chanel!
Thanks! I try my best
My father was a retainer of Cold Steel knives in the 80’s. These knives were great quality and very cool…..

There was a singular cold steel recon tanto at a knife shop and i bought it instantly, its served me well so far and ive had it 4 years now

I have a San Mai 3 recon scout . It came out of the box laser beam sharp. It has taken a beating during the 14 years of having it. Cold steel blades are quite nice. Everything it shows they can do, they do
I have carried a Ti-Lite since i was 14, broke the tip on one, but got it reshaped and still works good! I have the Kobun and love it! So thin and weildy. I took some red paracord and hollowed it out and did a "samurai" wrap on the handle, it looks really good!
If this guy is a rural Brazilian i'm matt fucking damon.
A couple of my favorite folding blade knives are the Cold Steel AD-10 and AD-15 with a drop point design.
0:47 "satellite phones" dude you literally showed a picture of a Thales 148 MBITR radio, not even remotely a SatPhone. If you don't KNOW what something is, don't GUESS and actually do real RESEARCH
I've put a CS tanto through 55 gallon oil drums hundreds of times. A quick strop and honing always brought the sharpest edge back.
First, I love Cold Steel knives. They’re durable and affordable. But, I refuse to believe any operator would carry a Kobun tanto into combat. It’s the cheapest CS Tanto, in cost and materials. The Recon Tanto and SRK knives are superior to the Kobun in every way.
I know an old Navy Seal, you know what he carried most of the time? A Morakniv Robust in a custom sheath
I believe it. Most soldier guys don't really care about their knife and the kobun is concealable and slim. They just want something there in case they need it
I have a Cold Steel "Spetznaz" shovel. I sharpened one edge, and its my camp shovel that doubles as a hatchet.
On sale at Midway cheaper than Amazon.
Seconded. MidwayUSA also has their canes, sword canes, staves, etc. which Amazon doesn't carry. Cold Steel City Stick is an amazing defensive tool (and a nice cane) for under $50 at the moment.
Fascinating, thank you for the video!
Unbreakable, my ass. I broke a Recon Tanto trying to baton it through a log.

Can’t beat Cold Steel for the quality you get vs the price you pay. I’m a fan boy of their products. 👍
"The best american can offer" and "aus-8" do not belong in the same sentance together. I bet the cia guys' knives were in s35vn 😝

@@knifestory I just came across your channel. How about making a video about how much the knife industry has changed over the past 25 years? It's been feeling like the types of steels available have been steadily on the rise, and plenty of new knife makers keep popping up with experimental new designs.
Uh dude most soldiers don't give a rip about what steel their knife is. Most of them think a S&W is a nice knife

After the towers were blown up, along with building 7.....cold steel blah, blah, blah.
The dumbest thing about 9/11 consipiracy theories, is that any explosives would have been burned up, or malfunctioned, after building 7 burned for 7 hours uncontrollably.
Currently carrying a Kobun around as an edc self defense knife, it's rock solid.
Cold Steel is my go to knife brand. Lots of bang for your buck. Love my blades!
i have owned a recon tanto for 18 years and its no joke. it holds up to anything.
I love my Leatherneck Tanto. I just wish that Cold Steel sold replacement sheaths, I lost mine.
Love my xl espada daily carried for years. Amazing a knife that large comfortably fits in a front pocket
Gifted a Recon Tanto in Carbon V to a good friend, also carry a OSS in Carbon V in the vehicle for defense. They are beautiful knives.
I have a recon tanto and a kobun i love them both i carry the kobun every day its never let me down👍👍
Cold Steel Tanto was my first real folding knife. I still have it in my pocket, every day.
I carry the mini tac tanto almost everyday. Neat little guy
I loved my Kobun. Good weight, good feel, the perfect curvature, nice and sharp, inexpensive.
Alas, it was stolen from me. Saving up for a recon tanto.
When the point of a cheap knife breaks inches from your face while extracting an arrowhead you begin to really appreciate knives that don't break easily.
