VIEWERS NOTE WELL!!! I have played for 40+ years and I thought I would be able to play Jimis version easy enough. When I saw another TH-cam station on how to play this song I dived in. I kept at it for two solid months and became very disheartened at not being able to play it even though I know I’m capable of it. So I searched and found 12 Foot Chain. And wow!!! 🤩 What a HUGE IMPROVEMENT. In the very opening segment the tutor explains Jimis guitar is tuned down a half tone AND he uses an OPEN E string in the key of C sharp minor. So I retuned my guitar and I nailed this solo in a single session. It restored my confidence and faith in my ability because I knew I could play it. I wasted 2 months on that other Channel (Marty’s Music) which doesn’t mention any of these facts and also it makes no sense the way he played it in C minor standard tuning. I’m stoked I found 12 foot chain and suggest you all stop looking elsewhere and stick with the dude who knows what he is doing. Also, a big lesson for me is that some TH-camrs are fakers and make big mistakes so BEWARE!!! Thank you 12 Foot Chain 👍👍👍👍🤩
Many teachers claim “note for note” on how to play a song, but never cover it completely. You sir are the closest to Jimi I have heard for this song, particularly when you play the solo. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Cheers! 👍👍
Extremely accurate tone and and note to note . ✨🇺🇸🎸✨ .... Jimi's Marshalls were hot rodded including his pedals and pick ups .... Roger Meyer was an electronic wizard .
Wow! This brought me back to my youth, trying to learn this by ear. Just got a jolt of emotion flash through me for a second. I almost had a melt down of tears but caught myself. Man! Music is such a powerful thing! Fantastic song!
I love your instinctive way of playing and teaching what you know about every song you learned to play without any boring explanations ... thank you ! You are a very humble and talented musician ! Best regards from France !
My Son will dig this, he is a Hendrix fan, he also left handed like Hendrix and same birthday, tried the upside down guitar, but easier now for lefties, bought him a Vintage brand left handed Strat. Very good lesson!
I've always thought of JH version as probably one of his best produced songs. You've inspired me to play this song now that I've watched your video (well over 20 times). I will continue to play this for the rest of my time. Thanks so much.
I am not the biggest Hendrix-fan, but this song-and-solo, (I always thought) was phenomenal. You really got it . . . Spot-On. Fantastic job. Enjoyed your lesson.
Such a great lesson!! There's tons of lessons on this classic but you have really got these leads precise! I've tried learning this song in the past but when I play it, it just doesn't sound correct. I even went as far as to "TRY" and learn this with my guitar strung for a lefty, lol!! Thank you for taking the time to learn it and being as close as you possibly can to sounding like Jimi without being Jimi!! Your format or style of teaching is really quite easy and comfortable to follow along to without getting frustrated. I look forward to more of your videos and have a happy new year 2024!! Aloha!!
Something in my psyche has kept me from attempting Hendrix. However, after stumbling on to your well laid out lesson, I figured what the hell. Not sure anyone else shares this, but the first time you nail that intro lead it truely feels like you’ve arrived!! Well done sir! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for an informative and interesting video. Best i've seen on J.H version of All Along The Watch Tower. Held my attention for whole video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great lesson as always. I saw an interview with Eddie Kramer when they released the Electric Ladyland 50th Anniversary box set. Was interesting. So are your lessons. I am still revisiting Axis Bold as Love. But slipping in Electric Ladyland at night. Now I have to order the 50th Anniversary box set. My original record is so very well played 😮
This bloody song has driven me nuts for a lifetime ha ha! Honestly, it's only recently that I've been able to correctly hear the intro (starts on the "and" of beat 3) without the aid of a drum track/count-in from a play-along track or demo track. The next worst offender is The Who's Magic Bus (Jasus!!!!, I have a very strong Love/Hate relationship with that song Ha ha!) ... and of course there is Deep Purple's "Maybe I'm a Leo" which seems to morph into a completely different riff at the 13 second mark?!? I actually love that though, both riffs sound fantastic! (I hear the intro as starting on the "down" beat of one, but then the correct riff appears to me at the 13 second mark as actually starting on the "and" of beat one!) Anyway, enough of that twaddle,; Fantastic work as always, Mr. Chain!
Dude..!! Your version of the musical events is sooo much better than the other UTube guys… Why am I not surprised..? 😂 Great job..! I’m waiting for my Firebird to be delivered… I think it’s gonna sound pretty cool..🙏🏻 Thanks man..!!!
dude very cool of you to take that time and detail that all out. Super thanks🙏 Tell me your signal chain here? Are you playing thru both those amps? or are they just mic'd up for display?
Thank you. The description has the pedals, but yeah I had 2 amps running. I have a boss harmonization to split the signal (pedal not on though), then ultimately stereo out to 2 amps. In this vid I think I ran out into my super reverb and my 50w marshall, mic both and mix in along with whatever the lapel mic picks up.
On the songs I ve seen , You always do an INCREDIBLE JOB I play Bass but I like to know what the Lead guitar is doing , so if I can add to it if it is possible in the right place . On some songs I do part of vocal line while keeping the low end , usually with CCM on sunday morning. We usually do 5 different songs every week, we do not repeat songs every week . I was saving songs in Binders unto I had over 300 , now I don't save them . Been playing 43 yrs.
I also like to listen to what the other players are doing fir the same reasons. It's great to find how to compliment what the other musicians ate playing. Listening is the most important skill I think
Great lesson!! I'm an intermediate guitarist... would you recommend learning this song at this stage or is it better if i learn it when I'm at an advanced stage?
Is the guitar solo intro using E Major pentatonic or E Mixolydian? I think for the Live at isle of wight hendrix rolls his tone control down to get that clapton woman tone?
No idea which scale, sorry. I think of it in terms of an e pentatonic but I know he hits some notes thar are outside of that scale. And by E I mean in terms of position on the neck since I think he's tuned down a 1/2 step
@@12footchain, Lets just say Hendrix turned to standard E to make it easier. The intro chords are C# minor to B Major to A major, with a pedal-tone note of the High E ringing out. The intro solo lick is at the 9th fret BOX#1 E Major pentatonic or E Mixolydian?
Nice lesson, but I wish you had talked about the timing on the intro solo. It’s quite tricky because the “one” beat is not where you think it is, and if you count it wrong, it feels like there’s an extra beat before the verse starts.
@@12footchain yes! But I find it’s very hard to “hear” it with all that’s going on during the intro, including what sounds sort of like kettle drums! It’s actually easier to hear the timing on the live version at Isle of Wight.
Excellent point! At 71 years old now I have NEVER been able to pick the start point, and I am to this day hearing on the wrong side of the beat. The beginning of “I’m Free” on Tommy did the same thing to me until one day way back I got it. As a lifelong guitar player this has always driven me crazy about All Along The Watchtower… I can play the notes in my sleep, but the timing is always wrong until the song gets going.
its there - its the old version of tabs that I was doing before I started using guitarpro, but there is a tab there for that song. And I will also upgrade it to a guitarpro version at some point.
No, don't think it has built in buffer, but it sits in front of everything in my signal chain, and the next thing after it is my boss tuner which has a buffer.
Jimi never played it like the record. You also don't sound like the record. Why should you? Everyone should sound like themselves anyway. All this copying stuff is just plain stupid. Imagine if all the key players just wanted to sound like their idols. There would never be EVH, Trucks, Beck etc. Sure it's cool to learn other stuff. It's necessary to some extent but to be obsessed by this "sound like xy" crap.....thats just not healthy.

Best lesson on this song. Thank you sir!
Great video! Covered the parts that others neglected in their lessons.
I believe this song was one of Hendrix’s greatest accomplishments. And he had many.
Thanks for doing this, you have the best lessons on hendrix period. Two thumbs way up.
I appreciate that!
Been watching you for a while. You are a class act mate. Loving the lessons.Keep going and ignore any negativity.
Thank you, I will
This number just keeps Climbing like a 3 stage Rocket. It's the definition of "Outta Sight".
This is the best tutorial I have found for this song by far. Thank you!

I’ve been playing that song since it came out! I always like to see other guys versions and always pick up some extra tips to add to it! Thanks!
I love this one. The fact that Dave Mason plays Rhythm guitar on this one of so cool.
I am not the biggest Hendrix-fan, but this song-and-solo, (I always thought) was phenomenal. You really got it . . . Spot-On. Fantastic job. Enjoyed your lesson.
Well now, aside from this great tutorial whats even more impressive is ALL that gear collection behind him.

Great lesson and you nail the tone better than anyone covering this song on youtube
Thank you!
The first lick was what I wanted. Thank you
Great job Man, perfect notes, bends and tone!
Man that was great, now I see what Clapton and others were thinkin when they witnessed it and were blown away!
I'm definitely going to be saving this in the archive for future references. Really great job on this song!
Thanks!
Thank you very much
Great playing. If I wasn't watching but just heard I'd think it's Hendrix.
Man. You really nailed it. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Sounds like a freaking recording. It's perfect 👌 (can't wait to learn it. Great breakdown.)
Best Song of all time and best lesson also.
Sounds bloody good as usual, Doug!❤😊

Once again 🙈 spot on and we’ll explained. Thanks 👍🏻
Awesome job on this video. Thanks!
Nice one 12 Foot Chain ♪♫♪♫♪
Thank you. Subscribed and hit the bell . One of my bucket list lead guitar parts like Jimi
Brilliant lesson and demo! Thanks once again TFC! 🌠🌅🌌👌
Thank you for some tips- Great Song - Great Channel
Ok, so I fully liked this at 30s in! here for the ride.
Great lesson video, thanks for making this video
Yes Dave Mason played acoustic - this never seems to be mentioned, thanks for including it

@@12footchain Yes indeed! To me, Townshend's acoustic guitar sound/tone is one of the finest ever put to tape in classic rock.

Can you please do a lesson on horizontal departure by Robert Plant it’s good electric guitar song to learn
Jimi played with his right hand from the WRIST, not by just moving his fingers. Same for SRV btw. Big big difference.
Merci 🙏
I've never seen a lesson on Party Town by Glenn Frey, but if it is possible I like to see that one. Thanks.
Great lesson!! I'm an intermediate guitarist... would you recommend learning this song at this stage or is it better if i learn it when I'm at an advanced stage?
Go for it! You can do it!
Your suspicion is correct he did use a Zippo brass lighter on watchtower 🤠🎶
Yup!😮
that's the way you do it let's see if I can get it.
Is the guitar solo intro using E Major pentatonic or E Mixolydian? I think for the Live at isle of wight hendrix rolls his tone control down to get that clapton woman tone?

Red House on a Les Paul or Strat on record?

its there - its the old version of tabs that I was doing before I started using guitarpro, but there is a tab there for that song. And I will also upgrade it to a guitarpro version at some point.
All along the watch tower and evil women (Elo)are the same. 😊
Do you have a buffer on your Wah? As I can’t get my Dunlop cry baby to play ball in front of the Wah
No, don't think it has built in buffer, but it sits in front of everything in my signal chain, and the next thing after it is my boss tuner which has a buffer.
Are you related to Andy Aledort? You look and sound alot like him.
no, not related. I love his stuff too. so good
Zippo - trade mark reg.
great vid explanation man Hendrix something else
He didn’t play this on a strat he actually used his Flying V for this song
I thought it didn't sound like a stratvto me, that makes sense. Any good documentation of that?
Why tone down?what is that?
Good video BUT, what most people need help on is the fills between the vocal lines....
Good point. May make a part II for those
I am on a 6-string chain 😣
It wasn't recorded on a strat
my ear agrees with you, but would love to see if there's actual evidence of what he played.
pretty sure I remember wind cries Mary was recorded on a telecaster is it possible along the watchtower was a 335?
Very hard to copy Jimi Hendrix especially the wah part
Unless you have a fuzzface. Those almost always have to go first.
I can hear straightaway, it’s in the wrong key. You need to go an octave up.
But nest so far
You talk too much, turn around yourself, but dont lead step by step through this piece 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
It's called a lesson. It's why he's talking. If you don't want a lesson. Listen to the record or watch one of those shorts that teach nothing.
You should talk less
Man, unglue that right hand from the bridge. This right hand needs to be Loose if you want to sound or play even remotely like Jimi
