The second story reminded me when I was harassed by a Herbalife woman in my gym. I’ve been training for years and I’m friends with the trainers in the gym, who actually work there and are real trainers. Those people helped me from time to time if I had a wrong posture when working out. One day I was in gym working out with my boyfriend and this lady with Herbalife bottle who I never seen in this gym approached me. She went away finally and I have never seen her again in that gym. I do have to say, my boyfriend also tried to tell her not to bother me because my posture was good and if I really needed help, he would help me as he is training for many years.
Damn, I’m sad because that approach may work on somebody who doesn’t have the experience or is insecure about their form while working out. Once somebody thinks she’s helping it would be easier for her to suggest her snake oil products. It sucks.
Knowing the way hair growth and hair loss works, with the phases hair goes through, I don't think there's a way to prevent post-partum hair loss. It sucks, but it's normal and natural. This MLM was so predatory, and I've seen a pattern with MLMs preying on people with a weak understanding of science.
I'm one of the few who didn't have post partum hair loss, in fact mine did the opposite. I went from thin baby fine hair to thick hair over 3 pregnancies.
The only thing you can do to help, is continue taking prenatal vitamins. My second baby is 5 months old and I'm still taking them - mostly because I'm nursing, but I have noticed I have less severe hair loss this time vs with my first. Could be coincidence - but I do think it's helping that I'm getting all the vitamins and minerals I need this time around vs not taking any vitamins in the post partum period with my first. To be clear - I still have hair loss, but it's not as bad. It's been easier to tame and "hide". Which is a relief since I'm getting married next month and don't want a ton of baby hairs flying around 😂
The hair loss was such a sad part of my postpartum, but I dealt with it because a) it's inevitable, it's just the hair cycle and b) it will end on its own. And it did! This is why women need to be educated on how their bodies recover from pregnancy and deliver. Otherwise, all of the changes are scary, sad, and women can become targets of pseudoscience schemes!
Post partum hair loss is a thing, there's nothing much you can do. You are shedding all the hair that your body held onto while it was busy nourishing your baby in the womb. Most people's hair gets thicker during pregnancy so the post-partum loss seems more pronounced. It all evens out in the end. I wish it would not be used as a scare tactic to sell stuff.
If I was ever told I HAD to buy something and couldn't cancel without a cancellation fee, I'd be filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau and my state's AG's office. Maybe even the FTC. File complaints with people who can help.
I have never been involved with an mlm, and I am so happy about that. The whole business set up reminds me of when my great grandfather, his brothers, and their sons worked in the coal mines of Eastern Kentucky around the early 1900s. Back in those days, the coal mine and the land around it was owned by the mining company. On that land, the company would build little ramshackle houses, usually one or two rooms, and they would have a "bank", a "general store" and sometimes a doctor's office. All of these enterprises were owned by the mining company. If you worked the mines, you had live in one of the houses. Your pay each week was docked for the "rent". You were paid in company "script", which is basically Monopoly money that is only good at the company store. Prices were higher than in town, but you had no real money to spend in town. It was a way to keep the miners working for the company, because you could not quit if you "owed" money for the rent and to the company store. Modern day slavery. These MLMs sound very similar.
Hannah! I don’t know if you have seen it but a Reddit AITA post that went viral was about an mlm. It’s called AITA for completely ruining my future SIL’s bachelorette party? And it’s wild, I think you would enjoy reading it!
Thanks for mentioning this! (For anyone looking for it, googling 'aita ruining sil bachelorette party' brought it right up. It was posted 4-5 days ago.) It was a good (aggravating? Relevant?) story.
Agree with going to the doctor if you're sick too long. I one started off with a cold and four months later I was having an incredible cough and constant headaches. The thing was I kept getting better, then relapsing, then getting better, than relapsing. When I finally got frustrated enough and went to my physician, she said that I had a serious lung infection. By stringing certain events over the past few months together we found that I had a cold, and then when I kept relapsing my body got weaker and weaker until the point that it just gave up and the cold settled into an infection. Like two more weeks and I would've died.
I got sucked into Monat hair care and was sadly surprised by the auto ship situation. I would agree though, that with contacting customer service - it was quite easy to get out of it. Still was super crappy though and I had to pay shipping to return my product for that second shipment
As an aesthetician we learn that essential oils are only to be used aromatically or topically when diluted properly, and even this depends on the oil as not all are safe to be put on the skin. It makes me sad that people fall for any recommendation to ingest/cook with essential oils
i know a girl that’s a personal trainer and a nutritionist and i used to be really close friends with her. she posted an instagram story basically answering peoples questions and i asked her for tips regarding my lack of appetite and struggles with gaining weight. she immediately started pushing her Young Living scam on me. i was floored, she’d almost completely stopped posting about them for a while after she began her schooling and i was hoping she wouldn’t stoop so low. unfortunately she had no problem preying on people who want actual help.
Monat is a scam! Kangen water is a scam! Southwest Advantage is a scam! Kirby is a scam! (Don't mind me, just helping the SEO per story #4. Hope y'all are having a nice day)
The first story reminded me of my own physician as a teen. She used to prescribe me these weird pills whenever I had a sinus infection. They were real medicine, sold by a real pharmacy but they contained a lot of essential oils, mainly eucalyptus. The heartburn I got from those was so bad. And I still vividly remember the eucalyptus burps. It was so disgusting, that I to this day can't smell eucalyptus without feeling a little queasy.
The only oil I ingest is the doTERRA oregano when I feel a sore throat coming on. And that's TWO drops in a large mug of hot water with a tea bag. It helps! But I would NEVER take a capsule filled with oils, especially NOT multiple times in a day! That's so terrible! And that's miserable! I love eucalyptus lol
You talking about not recognising photos taken during that postpartum phase is so incredibly relatable. My husband has so many of my baby and I in hospital and I don't even feel like I was there, its so confusing
Hey, this girl on my Instagram that I used to work with is promoting her “new business” called In cruises. Just by the way she is writing about it, “join to be on top with the leaders” and “travel for free” gave me red flags. Could you do a video about it?
Yes I have a friend on Facebook who seems to be in some sort of travel agent MLM but I know nothing about it and don't want to ask and then want to try and recruit me.
@@RachelMarotta same! 😂 I tried googling it and it but couldn’t find a lot or confirmation that it is an MLM. Your first story on EO, I love that the work colleague called that night to warn her Yes it was late, but good on her ❤❤❤ Many people wouldn't, n just never mention the products again. This lady deserves a pat on the back for being an awesome person. Imagine if she didn't call and OP took ALL the EO capsules n got really sick cause they didn't call. She's the BOMB ❤❤❤
This video is just what I needed as motivation to fold my laundry and put it away. New Hannah video means I listen while doing a task I’ve been actively avoiding. It’s how I make doing the task less awful!
yiiikes. Long term sinus infections are horrific. I had one for a full year (abusive parents and school staff told me I was lying), and I'm genuinely wondering if I may have PTSD from it. It's been nearly 10 years and I still plan my day around the possibility of getting the symptoms that nearly killed me (because a year-long sinus infection permanently damages your sinuses, so I still have symptoms).
YES @ personal purchases. Don’t know if the rules have since tightened, but as of 5 years ago I knew of high-ups at the very top of Scentsy who would purchase the monthly product quota themselves, give it away to their downline as ‘prizes’ or use it as testers then claim it at tax time as a work expense. The company has rules that are ostensibly designed to prevent excessive self-purchasing, but the higher-ups in question flout these rules by buying from each other’s accounts and ‘lifting each other up’.
That first story was very enlightening! It is always good to see what goes on behind those "Look at how great my life is because of this MLM" postings.
The way u talk is so down to earth❤I love it! And congrats on the baby ❤❤ I had 5 so I know all about the post pregnant haze lol it's like that for a few months it will pass!
I stumbled on this by accident, but like holy cow. I participated in two different MLMs. Both flopped. One was Wildtree, one was Plexus. I carry so much shame that I got taken in by the recruiting process. I feel bad that I wasted my family’s resources. I’ve had my eyes opened and I’m so glad you’re in this space, working to open other people’s eyes. Thank you for this video!!
Yikes, homemade essential oil 'pills'. I have a DoTerra rep friend who is also a TCM practitioner and absolutely swears you can use these oils internally for various ailments. I always smile and nod and change the subject. I will say, the one defense I have for them is that tea tree oil 100% helps with blemishes. I'm not saying you can cure acne or anything like that, just that they do help with small blemishes, as published by the American Dermatology Association.
@@camillelivelyuh no they didn’t? They’re letting people know that you need to mix it with a carrier oil if your comment was possibly the first time they heard it can help with acne
(First story) The fact that the esencial oil bottles explicitly say "Not for oral consumption", and this lady is filling capsules with them and making people take them.....
Story 4 For post partum hair loss, you don't need anything, and frankly nothing will really help. Hair follicles have two phases, growth, and rest, followed by shedding. Rinse and repeat. When pregnant, more of women's hair follicles enter resting, and less of them shed to restart growth phase. This results in women having thicker hair when pregnant. Once you're no longer pregnant, all of that backlogged shedding happens rapidly. Your hair ends up thinning because the ratio of growth phase to rest phase was thrown off. It usually goes back to normal after a year though.
My mom invited me to this group on facebook that is a straight mlm goldmine. I know you are not hurting for content, but man, the oil huns, Kangen water reps, and keto queens are abundant in it 😖

I had a math teacher, and she would always have tea in her room that we could make, which I had once or twice when I had a sore throat. However one time a girl told her she had a sore throat, and the teacher took out a ginger oil form her bag and dropped it directly into the girls mouth! I had no idea at the time you weren’t supposed to ingest them, but I’m glad I was too shy to ever talk about my sore throats outloud
Thank you for your great work telling so many of the real life stories that expose the reality of MLMs in a very objective and respectful way. I wanted to comment on Story 2... I was in Juice Plus for approximately 5 years. One major point of cognitive dissonance for me was noticing that EVERY ONE of the top leaders I saw at conferences and events, all had a very specific, unrealistic-for-most physicality, seemingly Stepfordish look. By that I mean, they all looked like they came from the same Barbie doll factory. Looking back at it now, it literally makes me shudder.
As a former Ambassador to Plexus, I bought 5 times per month what the 2 or 3 people under me bought. Also, what she said about ambassadors hanging on to their ever word is 100% true. They worship the ground corporate walks on, especially the higher ranking rubies, emerals, sapphire, etc..
Stories like Story 1 weirdly give me faith in humanity -- MLM lady appears to be in possession of actual human logic, has a support system who can make sure she's safe, and checked up on story writer to make sure she was OK too. Sometimes these stories can veer so far into insanity territory that it's nice to see one where it's clearly just ignorance at play and you can actually understand the motives of the people involved
Ok, but how do we find such a supportive, ethical fitness/health coach like the one in the second story? They mostly seem shady and definitely try to put you on meal plans.
A friend that’s done partylite for 25 years is starting to struggle because they’ve gone to affiliate programs rather than the old mlm way of selling so she’s no longer making money off telling people they’re not trying hard enough.
It also seems effective to cancel your card associated to an auto ship order 😉 Nothing to take the money from, no continued autoship haha. It may be a bit more of an inconvenience, but I’d probably take that option
I drink Raspberry Crystal Light every day! I usually make a bottle from a single serve packet, and use half (about 8oz) to mix my generic Mira Lax in. Raspberry is my favorite flavor.
Story 5: Driving a 'Mary Kay car' does NOT mean that this rep is doing well. It could mean the opposite (i.e., she's stuck in a lease that many months she cannot pay for.)
I saw three of them in a mall parking lot one day. I kept smoking where the Mary Kay ladies were-not to buy anything but to talk really loudly about how bad the company was. I didn’t find them; probably better for my karma that I didn’t find them.
The plexus one actually made me sad, when I was pregnant with my first born a cousin of mine was selling plexus and she was also pregnant. She was all about it on her Facebook and pretty much all she talked about. She seemed so happy and vibrant and kept pushing it on me. I told her I was just afraid to take any supplements and even gave up some herbal teas because I was afraid for anything to harm my baby. She seemed a bit annoyed at me for saying this and reminded me that we were both pregnant and she takes all of the supplements and she and her baby are just fine. She just said she understood, and we left it at that. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy, and she ended up losing her baby girl full term. I'm not saying Plexus had anything to do with it, but it's just sad to me nonetheless.
My inlaw was told by her ''health advisor'' to ingest several drops of sage essential oils twice a day... thank god she did not do this for very long because she quickly found herself very nauseous after each dose...
I wonder if there could be legal issues if a company doesn't specifically state there is recurring charges. Which could be why they don't give people too much trouble.
My mom did Pampered Chef. She would hold parties and would just make food for her friends. She later told me that she only did it because she got discounts on kitchen supplies and she never sold anything to anyone unless they came to her.
Story 4: Excellent advice to other antiMLM creators to include the names of the companies in the titles. Thanks to your advice, I'm going to start using names of companies in my comments! Monat! Plexus!
Crazy how corporate was pushing that personal trainer to continue working with someone who was purposely trying to force a dangerous diet and exercise plan on themselves. Where are the ethics?
My mom didn't know much about MLMs back in the day but what she did know was that she never wanted to support Mary Kay. Back in the day, they got exposed for animal testing and my mom was disgusted. Researching now, I see multiple sources saying they still aren't cruelty free, so please be aware of that
The first story freaked me out because she listed 3 essential oils that are toxic to ingest... I recently looked into this as my newest D&D character is an essential oil hun 😂
I have a MLM story that I’m going to share here because its very very short and I was never directly involved. Probably 10-15 years ago there was a MRSA outbreak in my area that was linked to a arbonne party. Since this was so long ago I don’t remember any details.
I'm guessing being in Mary Kay for 40 years is why she's doing so well. I can't imagine the market was anywhere near as saturated in the early 80s. I'm in my late 40s and the only place I heard of MK in the 80s was the comic strip Bloom County and that related to animal testing (which probably didn't actually involve penguins), not their business model.
And there was nowhere near as much competition in that era! Nowadays it's Ulta, Sephora, indies like Moira and Nomad, and the drug store is heating up 🔥 I got Revolution eye cream for $7.50 and it's good.

2nd to last story... If you get your $30 cancellation fee back you should use that $ to buy a Hannah Alonzo "not a boss babe" sweatshirt and wear it around this family member LOL
As a conservative Christian myself, I see a lot of ladies falling for mlms over the years and never understood it. I went to parties and was shocked how expensive some of these things were! I see young girls pitching mlm products on Facebook. I wish we could write a book to conservatives regarding these companies! They seem to target us! Ppl are not wanting to be rude or unkind seems so antichristian to say no! So they play off that deceiving themselves into thinking this is a good thing.
The problem is that many conservative Christian churches operate on dogma and a cult mentality emphasizing recruitment and status. It dovetails perfectly with the culture of MLM’s.
I don’t use any mlm oils, because of how ridiculously expensive they are and how unethical the business model is. But I go through *a lot of essential oils* whenever I have the cold/flu (typically eucalyptus and camphor-or peppermint if I’m nauseous). But I will either put them in a room diffuser, or drip some on a washcloth that I set in the bottom of my shower-so they “diffuse” when the hot water heats them up. It always helps calm my coughing, ease my congestion, and the scent relaxes me….when they’re used in conjunction with regular cold/flu medicine. But never in a million years would I ever do something as _INSANE_ as literally *CONSUME* those oils!!!!! I am genuinely shocked that these “oily” companies don’t get hit with massive lawsuits over this stuff. Because you can easily poison/cause significant harm to someone, by telling them to ingest a bunch of essential oils (especially undiluted)!!!!🤦♀️
The anti-MLM theme song should be Little Girl Gone by Chinchilla. Overplayed, yes, but the sudden aggression is so perfect. "Messed with the wrong b**ch in the wrong era!"
5:07 honestly kudos to the lady for warning op, considering how deep she was in I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd denied to hell and back the oils were the issue, let alone warn op. this gives me some hope she maybe wisened up someday though hearing how she didn't listen to poison control my hopes aren't high :(
Plexus OP: Please send in more details on your internship...I've been curious about the corporate side of MLMs for a long while and I think alot of other people are curious as well.
It is entirely possible to be a "girl boss", work from home, run a business etc. But MLMs are not it. I was pitched by a younique hun a few years ago, she had the logo plastered on her car and everything. After asking if it was a pyramid scheme and being told, "No! Those are ILleGAl" 🤦♀️ I wisely decided to follow my gut and decline. As far as I can tell no one around here sells younique anymore and her car went back to normal. I started a pretty successful Etsy shop selling original art and prints. There are so many better options for anyone wanting to work from home. Furniture flipping, making candles, wax melts, cakes, art in any form, nails and beauty, thrifting.. the options are plentiful in these days of social media and online selling. For anyone who needs to hear it, you can do it too❤ Find a passion, not an mlm!
The thing that made me despise MK was finding out how they redo their packaging every so often to "rebrand" the products, so that their reps can't get their money back if they can't sell the "discontinued" products. Nothing about the products changed but the label. And they make out like fat rats.
First story is really interesting because it seems like she has cognitive dissonace going on. She has enough connection to reality to realize she was doing harm by her recommendation, but she also had to qualify to herself that she only "overdid it" because she's probably pretty deep in it.

Just put it on your credit card and then claim fraud against the company
@lauras3666 it's better to file these complaints because they will be forced to investigate. It could help take the company down.
A capsule of tea tree oil to the guts???
Ouchie!
Glad everybody was okay and learned not to do that.
And eucalyptus! 😬
I had a hard time canceling my Monat VIP membership, so I just removed my card info from my account. I've never had any issues since then.
Omg minty lemony burps
I nearly spit out my lunch
Absolutely! Complications of a normal cold are nothing to play around with. Glad you're okay and know to go in now.
Can't wait to hear what Dad has picked for us!
I got sucked into Monat hair care and was sadly surprised by the auto ship situation. I would agree though, that with contacting customer service - it was quite easy to get out of it. Still was super crappy though and I had to pay shipping to return my product for that second shipment
So happy you got out.
As an aesthetician we learn that essential oils are only to be used aromatically or topically when diluted properly, and even this depends on the oil as not all are safe to be put on the skin. It makes me sad that people fall for any recommendation to ingest/cook with essential oils
The person who submitted Story #2 is an unsung hero. 💙💙 Kudos to you, girl!
Story 3: 18:42 pure gold. Thank you for the external validation that the distributor is the customer.
i know a girl that’s a personal trainer and a nutritionist and i used to be really close friends with her. she posted an instagram story basically answering peoples questions and i asked her for tips regarding my lack of appetite and struggles with gaining weight. she immediately started pushing her Young Living scam on me. i was floored, she’d almost completely stopped posting about them for a while after she began her schooling and i was hoping she wouldn’t stoop so low. unfortunately she had no problem preying on people who want actual help.
Even at my most ruthless salesmanship period, to not be transparent about a recurring order like that, would have made me sick.
And I was so shocked that she is part of that, because she is very successful in her field. She has her own business (like a real legit business) and is a respected woman in her field. I literally cannot believe she would be a part this. And her marketing is aggressive and cringe.
There is a Disney one. Wonder if that is it?
@@christinescott5002 No, it’s not a Disney one.
@@christinescott5002 I did see one that is authorized to sell Disney packages but they do not directly work for Disney but they really push it like they do.
We definitely need a deep dive on these travel agent mlms
It's always people with fantastic stories and insightful information who want to "keep it short"
Your first story on EO, I love that the work colleague called that night to warn her
Yes it was late, but good on her ❤❤❤
Many people wouldn't, n just never mention the products again.
It's been nearly 10 years and I still plan my day around the possibility of getting the symptoms that nearly killed me (because a year-long sinus infection permanently damages your sinuses, so I still have symptoms).
the way reps talk about rejuvenique oil has the most old-timey snake oil patent medicine vibe istg
Avon does that too
that woman signing you up for an auto ship without your consent is straight up fraud.
Here early, who wants to join my downline?
Omg I'm so in boss babe
😂
😅😅😅😅
You have to patch test first, though, and dilute with a carrier. That stuff can burn your skin.
@@maryeckel9682 Totally missed the point of my comment, but ok.
@@camillelivelyuh no they didn’t? They’re letting people know that you need to mix it with a carrier oil if your comment was possibly the first time they heard it can help with acne
I agree, author of story 5 spoke perfectly on the contradicting expectations women are under
(First story) The fact that the esencial oil bottles explicitly say "Not for oral consumption", and this lady is filling capsules with them and making people take them.....
It's crazy, but the reps are trained to say it's safe, even though the company says not to!🤦🏼♀️
Story 4
For post partum hair loss, you don't need anything, and frankly nothing will really help.
I love how you have a Character Outfit (or several) and I’m here for it. The shirts and your silhouette would make you easily recognizable
My mom invited me to this group on facebook that is a straight mlm goldmine. I know you are not hurting for content, but man, the oil huns, Kangen water reps, and keto queens are abundant in it 😖
That's interesting to know.
Do tell!
You could still submit your finds for mlm fails!!
People don't fail at MLMs. MLMs fail people.
I love getting a notification for new Hannah while watching old Hannah on shuffle during work 😂💜
today was my last day at a job i really love and i have been super sad, so having a new horror stories video to listen to is amazing :) hannah, thank you for making these
Makes sense that so many people have horror stories about MLMs because their goal is to recruit as many people as possible.
Hopefully that woman’s boyfriend was able to talk more sense into her.
Ok, but how do we find such a supportive, ethical fitness/health coach like the one in the second story? They mostly seem shady and definitely try to put you on meal plans.
I agree with you Hannah - All horror story videos are awesome, but this batch is next level!!!
All of the vehicles as part of MLM are scams that put the people further into debt
Hannah, I am currently 2 months postpartum with my 3rd baby and it’s been the same for me with each of my babies! The postpartum haze is so real!
What is the MLM obsession with "retiring your husband" ??? Call me crazy but if someone gets to retire early I want it to be me!
Mom activity becomes their social life and they love it.
The reaction to 40 years is one shared by all of us 😂
Story 4: Excellent advice to other antiMLM creators to include the names of the companies in the titles. Thanks to your advice, I'm going to start using names of companies in my comments! Monat! Plexus!
My jaw DROPPED at the idea of ingesting tea tree oil-- that's an essential oil that can EAT THROUGH PLASTIC. That's horrifying
These are so good, I'm thinking of sending my story in. I always look forward to these stories.
Absolutely disgusting that a someone would take advantage of postpartum woman especially in your own family 😮😭
During that first story I was like “no! no! don’t swallow the oils! noooooo!!!!” through the whole thing 😱
Crazy how corporate was pushing that personal trainer to continue working with someone who was purposely trying to force a dangerous diet and exercise plan on themselves. Where are the ethics?
Ethics? How much does that sell for?
Corporate being corporate
Those long term sinus infections are the worst! But essential oil capsules are even worse.
That ending of that last story was truly beautifully put. As a viewer, I wouldn't object to hearing it again and again if you use it in future videos.
You’re so sweet!!! I enjoy so much watching your videos!! Really educational
@@maryeckel9682 I think there were more everyday places that sold makeup back then.
I remember my local grocery store having a great makeup section back when I started having an interest in makeup. Now, good luck finding more than a few options in a couple of brands.
I recently had an mlm experience while job hunting. I applied for an Tmobile job and the giy called me said the position had closed but after looking at my resume thought id be a great fit for his side business primerica
Ooh, bait and switch meets MLM
@@maryeckel9682 yeah i was super unhappy. And of course he promised me it wasn’t an mlm i just go the opportunity to build a team under me and gain a passive income
If you accidentally get roped into an auto-ship and bought it with a credit card, dispute it with them rather than dealing with the MLM
When I was little I thought mlm make up was like the best make up because it's not in the shops
That was part of their marketing!
@@maryeckel9682yep. That’s what they tell you
Please don't eat the essential oils they are meant for smelling they probably have perfumes and things in them they're not meant to be eaten! You may as well just spray air freshener or perfume directly into your mouth
A new Hannah video!!!
Love that people are finding your videos from searching for mlm companies 😂👏
First story is really interesting because it seems like she has cognitive dissonace going on. She has enough connection to reality to realize she was doing harm by her recommendation, but she also had to qualify to herself that she only "overdid it" because she's probably pretty deep in it.
I hope she sees the error of her ways and gets out.
Cognitive dissonance is a requirement if you’re involved in an MLM 😂
Oh that Plexus story needs to be highlighted in its very own video so I can send it to some people!!
A new Hannah Vid is always awesome. Youre my anti MLM inspiration ❤
AND she didn't try to sell it to the physical trainer because she KNOWS BETTER>>>>
I am so happy I found your channel, just found it today and have watched way more videos than I would like to admit in one day !
