I guess you missed the IPCC report that we are above 1.5c. The worst case scenario is 8.5c by the end of the century. We will be over 2.0 easily by 2030. Good luck all.
The ones livin'g in safety still won't care. It's sort of like a survival mechanism, as.long as you're okay it's all good. We shouldn't think that our species is going to behave any differently than it has.so.far.
As long as manufactured consent is as strong as it is today, nothing will change. People are gunned down on our streets, children gunned down in our schools, the unhoused population grows out of control, there is a mass g word happening in Gaza. Nobody cares and the ones that do our leaders do not listen. I am afraid without more drastic action nothing can be done. But we also do not have time to. We need more action and we need it fast.
Literally every hundredth of a degree of warming matters. Every human life taken by disease, or conflict, or famine, or suicide… those are all people, no different than us.
@@heww3960bearing in mind where most fossil fuels are used, this argument is absurd, we really no longer need them and owe nothing to them, they were useful when we knew no better, now we do, so either bother yourself to not parrot fossil fuel ceo arguments or leave and take your ilk with you
@@demus89 E=mc2 The E is expressed in Joules. Do the math for a gram of power. The only possible way to get that much energy out of a gram of matter is to annihilate the matter with anti-matter which is extremely costly to produce and near impossible to store, except for minute amounts, as it requires to be stored in high intensity magnetic field.
@@a.randomjack6661 so what your saying is we cannot in this time achieve fusion without putting more power into the system than we get out? Ok well in the event we successfully do this in the next 75 years that would indeed grant us a pretty much sustainable and virtually unlimited amount of energy?
@@demus89 You hadn't mention nuclear fusion, which is what the sun and stars do. I am not an engineer, but all I've seen so far required a lot more energy going in than coming out, and by a rather huge factor. Fusion is about fusing hydrogen atoms to meje tem become the next element on the periodic table, helium. This requires temperatures equivalent to the inside of the sun, which can melt anything in a blink, hence the use of very intense magnetic fields, that requires a lot of energy to produce and maintain. 75 years is a long way away, specially at this accelerating warming rate. Then, since we live in a capitalist realm, competition will do all it can to impair the process. They've been doing this ever since we have nuclear reactors with tons of scary propaganda, which is why Germany for one, closed all it's nuclear power plants and burning (very profitable) fossil fuels. There's a lot to take into account on issues like this. In conclusion, IF nuclear fusion reactors can be achieved, it does not mean they will make it in the marketplace. Current capitalism is very happy with the way things are going. Disasters means rebuilding, means more profits. SRM or carbon capture also mean a lot more profits for a very long time. I don't think they want to get off that gravy train. They will do everything necessary to stay on it. 🤑🤑🤑
Worst part is that many popular climate prediction models have been compared to how extreme the weather actually ended up being and literally all of them severely undershot
It just shows how little scientists understand the true workings of this planet. It's more complex and interconnected than we fully comprehend... they are just guessing and spinning tales of disaster to get your submission to whatever the authorities want. Thats why they attack the people who question climate change instead of the questions themselves, which they dismiss as a conspiracy.
That's because alot of them didn't take into account the effects of a positive feedback loop. Their projections of a warning globe were linear, bit as we now see, the more the earth heats up it begins to run away at one point getting faster and faster. An analogy would be the melting of polar ice caps. The ice caps are reflecting huge amounts of electo magnetic radiation, but the more they melt the less reflective surface there is to reflect the incoming radiation. This means that the remaining ice melts faster than the ice before it did due to more radiation being absorbed by the oceans, heating up the ice faster.
@@bubba842 It also fails to account for the many other unknown changes that can result, or any impacts natural evolution might have. Like the fact that worldwide plant life has INCREASED by 15% in the last 2 decades. Or look at the Sahara, it's shrinking, and getting greener. Plants do *NEED* CO2 for photosynthesis, right?
@@craigrobertson42too much CO2 is bad for plants, talk to a farmer. Besides that, it depends on which plants you're talking about. Most of our crops don't like a high CO2 environment, and definitely don't enjoy a high temperature environment. Personally, I am doing everything I can to reduce my climate impact. I currently use 0.6tons CO2 per year according to the WWFs climate calculator. But then there are systematic issues I cannot control (outside of trying to influence people and political discourse). Swedish society -where I live, uses 3.2tons per person. Which takes me to 3.8tons, 0.3tons above the Paris Agreement target. The amount of compromises is something that very few are willing to do... But to me, it's actually enjoyable Things I do: - I don't purchase... anything, really... except food - I use my clothes for 20+ years and I repair them. I see every purchase as a "lifetime purchase" - I'm vegan, I eat after season - I bicycle everywhere - I don't own a car, I rarely use public transit even, except the really cold months. - I avoid purchasing products with unnecessary plastic packaging, and if I do, I often re-use them, like bread bags and such. - I live in a small studio apartment that has an exceptionally efficient heating solution. - The only thing I purchase is new computer parts every 10 years or so. (which is also required of my job as a developer). These days I tend to salvage used parts instead. - I also ghetto-mod furniture that are being thrown away. I actually don't feel like I can do much more individually. I really love living like this, living in accordance to my morals. I just wished more people wanted to do the same. You kind of feel like an alien on your own planet not understanding how other people think, especially considering the long-term effects of our inaction. When I have more time on my hands I will try to engage more in volunteer work, and try to inspire people. Currently I am volunteering for a group called "Repair Café" where we support people to repair their the things they own (instead of buying new), while talking about topics such as "reduce, reuse and repair". :) It has become highly popular in my hometown.
its cool that you do things individualy, you are doing plenty but most people just shy away from the hassle of changing their lifestyle or themselfes wich is... well logical too i dont really blame them, changes have to come from the top down instead of thinking consumer behavior will change the industry. industry uses so much money to influence our way of thinking and living most people will never break their programming.
@@d4rkh4l34yeah, I agree... it feels like personal action is really only a "first step"... after that you need to inspire change and influence politics or join volunteer groups and protests.
We need to get corporations to actually care about climate change beyond PR buzzwords. That does mean that profits would have to be reduced, so I don't how the current Jack Welch mentality of profits over everything else can be curbed without government intervention and unions, though.
South India is facing one of worst droughts, the heat is unbearable. I have been buying tankers of water to keep my Mango trees alive in my Farm. One more year of low rain fall like 2023 we would not even have water to drink
Need more crops that need less water, perhaps genetic engineering can help. Also we get a huge monsoon season with lots of water but most of it goes back to the ocean. We need dams and a reservoir to store freshwater! Let the water infiltrate and restore groundwater also

While I feel jaded, I will applaud for people who still want to reach better future. I will support you, even I if don't see how we can change humanity for better.
I don’t know how much longer I can live like this. Everything we do, everything we work and struggle so hard to support, is so wrong on a fundamental level. We have to drop everything and take the reins. Look at the regreening project in the Sahara. You think those people are looking to make money? No. They’re looking to secure their future, and they’re cooperating to do so. Even though regreening isn’t some magic bullet, those people consume almost nothing and their efforts are doing SOMETHING. We have to escape this.
We don't have to escape this, and all in all, we shouldn't. Humans have no respect for each other or for the planet and the life on her. We've had 1,000's of years to be compassionate and loving, but we chose not to be. We won't change.

And limit immigration. I made massive cuts in my greenhouse footprint by many small strategies, but many people from small footprint countries came here and radically increased their footprint. So many people did that that it completely erased my contribution and so much more. Half of US greenhouse gas emissions now are due to immigration since 1984. They had lots of children and immigrants need houses, jobs, food and everything else, their greenhouse footprints are much larger than the footprint of people already established there. Nobody likes to talk about that, that immigrants are the majority polluters in developed nations. Also that immigration is the #1 cause of climate change.

Most people look at climate in the short term and how it will affect them now, such as making environmental changes ,switching EVs and hydrogen cars ,etc). The Syrian civil war was possibly the first war to be a victim of climate change.. The extraordinary droughts that preceded the Arab spring were a key reason that gained support for the idea of rebellion against the government
Not just the droughts, but in particular, hikes in prices of food and fuel helped raise revolutionaire spirit (didn't the Egypt government reduce subsidies on either before the Tahrir square revolt started?) Both Russia and Ukraine, prime agriculture exporters to the Arab region, suffered from droughts in the onset of Arab Spring
Delusional. Demand is artificially induced by the owners of global meat production. You should already know as a consumer that what your demand is totally irrelevant when it comes to capitalist production

So I've been working on a little writeup project involving the likelihood of a US collapse and the term "Rotted through" comes to mind. As for the why - 1.) Agricultural monocultures & factory farming and the environmental devastation necessary to support their current forms (Contaminated ground water, eradication of top soil, insecticides as toxic as DDT, runoff red tides, and the profit incentive and behaviors around "Cash crops. This doesn't touch on the lunacy that is lawn grass) 2.) Infrastructure decay caused by privatization. (According to a DOE & NERC assessment in 2010, the national energy grid have been getting 3% to 5% less stable annually, not better.) This doesn't even touch on how decayed the mass transport networks are. Rail accounts for 40% of all shipped goods and 50% of all bulk goods transport in the USA (Association of American Railroads, an industry trade group) and are also increasingly prone to catastrophic failures. This trend continues throughout other essential infrastructure such as the interstate system & just general fking housing since the opening of the floodgates to extractive investment entities like blackrock in 2008. Can add cost cutting onto that for air travel too with the ongoing Boeing debacle. 3.) The destruction of communities, isolation, and alienation. The vast majority of "modern" places of coexistence/congregation are extractive in nature (Work sites, bars, clubs, restaurants, even churches.) and the interactions taken with society outside of those locations are often rage inducing (see - cars/traffic) then only having "individual responsibility" peddled as a viable solution creates crushing levels of isolation. There is a reason the US's self-termination rate is nearing that of japan....
I study environmental science, and this video is pretty much spot on. The Earth's average temperature is 15C so 2C higher is huge, but its not 2C higher equally across the planet for example 1.5C warmer is equal to 3-4 degree's higher in the Arctic and northern Europe. The IPCC reports is an invaluable resource in understanding whats going on across the globe, but it is the conservative model the numbers are on the low end of predictions for example the 1.5C warming limit was suppose to be that in 2100 the Earth will be 1.5C warmer but last year we already hit that threshold. But its only at that warming if each year for the next 4-10 years its consistently above 1.5C. So whatever is happening its accelerating and breaking scientists predictions into the worse case scenario. Also with crops, about 60% of crops grown is not for human use but this number changes depending on the crop, like soy only a few % (like 2%) is for human food the rest is for animal feed for beef production. Out of 6000 calories of food produced only 2500 of that is for human consumption. Also crops are already failing around the world, especially in Europe, droughts in the summer is killing crops but also very wet winters is doing the same and also pushing the sowing of crops back by several months.

Right now in America we are still hanging on to our way of life and the rich still prioritize wealth over the planet. Our car dependency resulted in urban sprawl and in many places such as the West Coast, we've run out of land to build and housing has become prohibitively expensive. So even though we have some of the highest incomes and carbon footprint, many are struggling to get by because of our inefficient use of transportation and land resources.
The reason we are not in a fire alarm mode as a species is simple, most people do not understand 3 degree warming, they think that 3 degrees warmer would be wonderful not knowing how ecosystems work. Education is key if we want people to care about our environment. In Canada where I live we are now going to elect a Conservative gov just on the basis of a carbon tax that is actually beneficial to most people since we get a trimester rebate in the mail, if you are not a high energy user you are simply making money but the far right has hijacked the issue to the point where the present gov no longer is viable. I have very little hope that we will do what is needed since most people are clueless on climate.

One thing I would like to get more clarity on; The IPCC likes to talk about „average temperature rise“ but what I’ve learned that if the average temperature rises 2°C, the temperature on land more likely rises 4-6°C, depending on continent/location, whereas bodies of large water heat up more slowly.

Simplicity is as necessary as it is inevitable. Decreased energy to power modern civilization at the present scale is an absolute certainty and no amount of opinion will change this fact. It is important to note that civilization will not give up its level of energy consumption willingly. Only the physical limitations of nature will accomplish a reduction in consumption and pollution.
I still do not understand why three trillion tons of C02 equivalent industrial pollution has led to a fixation on trying to make the climate system livable. Pollution is produced by the economic system, so it is not climate models that matter most, but economic models. If an economic system is terminal to humans and life, I think it can be understood to have reached the sufficient threshold of failure, and should be discarded. Or we can try to change nature to suit the economy - because the 20% of humanity that benefits from overconsumption feel they are very special.
You must eat a lot of aspirin with an abynormal brain like that. Who even talks like that? 'Terminal' this and 'terminal' that? Do you have any understanding that America has the cleanest air and water industrial system of any on Earth?
For long time it was hoped - in vain - that big stake holders will be able change over time. If you predict to move away from oil in 10 years, you can map out your growth of company and move to something else. Turned out capitalism in general is incapable of that kind of thinking.
I hope your optimism is right, and Hansen's prediction doesn't come through. I just have my doubts given the current political climate, and the amount of people who don't realize the issue.
Every estimate of the impact of climate change has been an underestimate. Global warming is only one risk. The other is ecosystem collapse that has triggered the sixth mass extinction. It's a one-two punch that will trigger the worst-case scenario.
It is the beginning of April and we are expecting for this Sunday temperatures which are more common around July....30°C...30 degrees at the beginning of July...oh and we didn't have any real snow and freezing since the beginning of December...there was no Winter. I am starting to dread summer.....
It's the beginning of April and snowing in California, freezing in Santa Rosa, winter storm in Lost Angeles and my 2022 garden 6cm high, is only 6mm high today. All our bees froze to death. Oh, there's a huge Tulare Lake now in Central Valley that was lost for 100 years, and even a new lake in Death Valley. 43F and cold drizzle.
What's scary is that global warming isn't linear, it is accelerating, even if c02 emissions are kept the same or decreased. As ice melts less sunlight is reflected back into the atmosphere and the ground absorbs more heat. This creates warmer temperatures and as this happens even more methane is released from the thawing permafrost. This phenomenon just creates a self-fueling negative feedback loop of doom for our planet.
Why aren't we doing more? Because people keep saying things like "the potential of extreme weather catastrophes is VERY LOW" (like this in this video). We are already WELL in our way to seeing extreme weather catastrophes. If we don't tell people the truth, nothing will ever get done. It might already be too late.
Our biggest mistake was not committing to modern nuclear energy options. Molten salt reactors, LFTR's, small modular reactor, Thorium reactors, etc. They can be used in collaboration with other alternative energy sources all over the place. Especially with all our advancements. Our knowledge around safety measures is much more understood. Tons of improvements in engineering, material science, technology, robotics, etc. They are all much more advanced now. This power source is the best option to improve our environment & will really help lower our emissions. The only things holding us back is past trauma that's been instilled into people (which is understandable but we gotta give it a chance to prove it has progressed & addressed past issues) Did they outlaw electricity or oil, coal when things went wrong in the early days of those fields? No! They kept going and understood things usually are bumpy and difficult in the beginning and kept going even tho those sources negatively impacted our environment. A huge issue is our government is BLOCKING any sort of progression from happening. We'd be lucky to see the slightest projects approved or finished with-in the next 100 years.. It's very annoying to see how much we have gotten in our own way when it comes to improving or advancing certain things. Instead we let fear, money, man made "required legal processes" Stop us from doing anything other than wind, solar, oil, natural gas, damming our rivers, mining for minerals... It's very frustrating because we should be able to use all these options in collaboration. If we actually wanted to improve anything. That's what we need to do and stop letting so much potential get blocked from ever occurring in the first place.. It's really irritating. I wish certain people didn't make this so "complicated and difficult" Why would any reasonable person want to block progression?
Just as there is not enough gold to run a global trade economy, there is not enough uranium to run a global energy economy. Thorium was tested and failed. It's all going to get very expensive, because they know you will pay any price for a warm room, a dry roof and keep all the lights on. Greenology is mental fentanyl.
My friends from India already said that kids are not well in heat and that it wasn't like this just a few years ago. It's so big and important problem!
You really should talk more about what steps an individual can take if you truly care. Let's face it: a plant based diet is the best and easiest way of fighting climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, ocean deadzones, and pollution. We are all in this together. Avoiding responsibilities does not serve anyone except the corrupted governments and corporations exploiting the system and people like you and me. We have to work together.. even if the truth hurts!
Anyone remember the gremlins from the Bugs Bunny cartoons? The ones that destroyed the military equipment? I’m ready to channel my inner gremlin. ::smacks wrench into palm::
Still, even with this video, talking as though we are doing something, that we will meet our targets. ALL we are doing is INCREASING co2 emissions year on year. We have cut nothing. Track us on what we are doing, rather than what we could be doing, and we are at the top end of the 'worst case' models. no matter which ones you use. At current rates, we have less than 6 years to COMPLETELY STOP using fossil fuels for energy production and transportation. And that is using the 'best case' scenario for stopping us blasting through 2.5c (which assumed a reduction from 2020 year on year).
Your 5-10% of chance of a car crash isn't even an apt or full analogy. Right now, we have a 100% chance of a car crash. We see the crash coming together at us. All we can do at this point is decide when and how hard we are going to hit the brakes. We have a 5-10% chance of that inevitable car crash being catastrophic. But there will be injuries and damage no matter what. We can only decide at this point, is how much. Hopefully.

@@demus89 E=mc2
The E is expressed in Joules.

Worst part is that many popular climate prediction models have been compared to how extreme the weather actually ended up being and literally all of them severely undershot
Turns out not ALL undershoot. It's once again human bias: those that didn't undershoot were under-weighted to discount them.

But to me, it's actually enjoyable

- I bicycle everywhere
- I don't own a car, I rarely use public transit even, except the really cold months.

So I've been working on a little writeup project involving the likelihood of a US collapse and the term "Rotted through" comes to mind. As for the why -
1.) Agricultural monocultures & factory farming and the environmental devastation necessary to support their current forms (Contaminated ground water, eradication of top soil, insecticides as toxic as DDT, runoff red tides, and the profit incentive and behaviors around "Cash crops. This doesn't touch on the lunacy that is lawn grass)
2.) Infrastructure decay caused by privatization.

You know it’s bad when we’re not even dancing around the sabotage thing anymore

One thing I would like to get more clarity on;
The IPCC likes to talk about „average temperature rise“ but what I’ve learned that if the average temperature rises 2°C, the temperature on land more likely rises 4-6°C, depending on continent/location, whereas bodies of large water heat up more slowly.

Economic Revolutions or Climate Apocalypse. Socialism or Barbarism.

The fact that we just had an earthquake in New York when you posted this 😅
I felt that too omg
The result of his earth-shaking analysis.
For reals? In New York prone to quakes ?
When those Nukes fly, the climate seem seem cold...
Hopefully.
I'm not convinced humanity will even hit the brakes. Full speed into the wall...
I noticed that on occasion, human civilization must be picked and pruned like a garden, for the exact same reasons why you do so.
Keep going!! Great content
I'm preparing for the worst and I'm glad I'm old.
we had bigger problem than climate change we knew about decades ago, and for some reason the climate is affecting me more.
i knew about the system that created climate change but no one wanted to listen back then, hopefully people will not get a narrow focus on Greenhouse gases but see the system that is the cause of the problem.
It's better to hear about the lower probability things that will take your life over the higher probability things that make your life uncomfortable.
BTW, 5% to 10% chance of death isn't a low enough risk to be taken lightly.
Oh man. In less than a decade we went from "we MUST limit warming to 1.5C or suffer catastrophic consequences!" to "2.7C is happening, maybe if capitalism as we know it ends we can avoid 6C?".
1.5C is pretty much impossible right now, but 2C it's still possible. Considering how OPEC reacted in the last COP, we aren't totally off track.
@@senhox970 we are already on 1.5 and the warming is accelerating.
@@Brunottilegende no, the mark isn't the average of one year, but the average of several years.
If only… we were a society whose members value the viability of the society over the individual rights and aspirations of its members.
"just, sustainable, ethical"? Have you met any human beings?
Please don't start with this "humans" nonsense. The problem is capitalism
We may have físhless oceans by 2048🌱🖤
