I'm old enough (71) and been wearing boots since a teen, my own business paid well so I collected hundreds of pairs of boots in most types of leathers and wide variety of colors, most with curved toe, leather lining, slant/walking heel, and leather insoles because I have to use orthotic insoles so I wear one size larger boots. I found my favorite boots are simple honey tan color sueded or rough out, 13-14 inch tall with tan rubber sole, also buckle style engineer boots in the same tan rough out, a girlfriend had a custom pair of Wesco's made for me that are incredibly comfortable, and at 20 years old still look new. Over the years I've given away most of the exotic boots, as well as a variety of colors, if someone admired what I was wearing and they fit I usually gave them away.

@@darrylswrinkledmarineshoes752 never thought they were supposed to, but my feet have continued to grow, in my teens-20's 9 1/2-10 1/2, 30's 101/2-111/2, until now at 73 wear 13-14. Most of the exotics have been gifts, the only ones that still fit are gray ostrich in size 11 1/2, ones too small, gray in cayman 11, some type of tan snake 11 1/2, not exotic, have tan, chocolate, deep gray, honey and black rough out in 10 1/2-11 1/2, the last bunch claimed by my son. Have to check closet's of other house to see what's left.

I tend to prefer sharper toe styles: snip toe, J toe or the shark-nose toe of Sendra boots. I don't like the kind of wide square toe that seems to be trendy now. Lucchese's narrow square toe (number 7) looks great though, and I like the square toe of harness boots. The medium cowboy toe is growing on me. They are more rugged. For exotics, I really like lizard, but I would like to get some caiman (tail cut), rattlesnake or ostrich leg. For the rest, I agree with you, although I can tolerate black soles on brown boots. But black boots must have black soles.

That is really the best thing about cowboy boots. Everything about them is subjective. From color down to material. To even the bootmaker or company. Everyone has different tastes and cowboy boots come in all flavors. Something for everyone. From work boot to dress boot to taditional to practical, there is no right or wrong cowboy boot. Personally I like a brown upper with a black shaft. Just sayin🤷‍♂️

Just thought about your boot video: boots for some people, like me, are an extension of a way of life. I never learned to tie shoes because there was no need. We wear boots, I am in my 70s and still struggle to tie a shoe. Horsemen and cowboys always wear GOOD BOOTS. The style and quality is as recognizable to our peers as the custom suit is to a professional businessman’s colleague. Boots for us are not fashion statementa or an attempt to be part of a crowd, all things in our world is rooted in pragmatic use or history. This is shown on styles of saddles, tack, length of rope and, of course, boots. We would no more resort to cheap boots than we would to fashion hats.
Keep up the good work, you can save the world from vinyl boot tops and plastic soles. Educate, educate, educate.
FYI: you might discuss most durable leathers some time. My experience is that for toughness and comfort smooth Ostrich is best with elephant equal, I have a pair of Anderson Bean elephants that have’t had my spurs off in 7 years except to get new heels. Shark for me is super tough but no stretch to conform to your foot. Full quill ostrich is the go to dress boot with your cayman, croc, and gater reserved for weddings, funerals, and hangins.
    Again good work.

Re: your boot preference: kudos to you for fondness for boots. To each their own. I do have some speculation from watching your great videos, I would guess you were born or live east of the Mississippi. Why would I guess that? If you were in Fort Worth or OKC in the company of, say 200, people who make their living under big hats and on top of good horses, your J toe walking heel would scream wrong place, wrong time.
Those 200 people would most likely be wearing square toes, lots of Ostrich, double welts to protect against a stristirrup, and an insole would be unheard of. The workmanship of those kind boots presents glove like fit at first try. This style will likely change in next few years because of such a heavy demand from the European market but until then this style boot is accepted in the ranch, arena, boardroom, and formal charity ball.
Boot styles of hands from the great basin, Nevada, Idaho, N. CA, some Montana and Wyoming are different again with 18 inch tops and 3 to 5 inch underslung riding heels. It’s a big, diverse world out there.

Thank you for your inquiry, I would be pleased to offer an opinion or two. I got my first pair of boots about the time I started walking. My grandfather explained to me that I needed to walk bow legged in them or people would think I was a sheep herder. I promptly proceeded to break the boots over, much to the ire of my mother for me and my grandpa.
Boots are part of my lifestyle even as I slow down a little. Quality first is one inviolate rule, with that in mind I have always been well served by Rio of Mercedes and Anderson Bean. They have common origins and that carries forth in quality of material, workmanship, and styling. These boots command a higher price than the fashion or occasionally worn brand. The boots hold up well in the stirrup and will support a refurbish if desired.
There are a number of quality boots out there, Ariat, Logan, Rod Patrick, to name very few. Lack of brand name mention might cause on to pause.
I cannot justify a boot that incorporates a great deal of man made material in its construction. I have never seen them hold up.
Smooth Ostrich is my go to hide for daily wear, nothing beats full quill Ostrich for dress, each is super tough. Personally I have never found snakeskin that attractive and have never owned a pair. I do admire gators but think them a little ostentatious for me. Eel, frog, ring back lizard, and others are just plain silly. I love elephant but stopped wearing them out of conscience.
Hope this gives some insight. Thanks for asking. There few simple rules: always choose quality over fad, be informed, and always remember those who wear boots don’t stub their toe as much.

Bill Arends Thank you for the reply, it’s appreciated. I would place you in Texas, so hopefully over your 70+ years it was the horses that made you bow-legged, and not walking funny in your boots. I have never owned Rios of Mercedes, but soon will as I have some on order, and yes, the price would have made your granddad keel over! Have you looked at Fenoglio boots from Nocona? You might approve of them. Happy trails!

Life time in Oklahoma atop some great horses in the company of wonderful boot wearing folks. Enjoyed several different careers but always with a good horse and saddle close by. Up and down the Red River with and friends still there. Gonna check out Fenoglio, liked Noconas back in the day.

I agree with all your preferences. You gotta have leather everywhere! But my favorite toe is the snip toe!

Double stitched welts look ridiculous to me. Like white dress shoes.

To each their own. I'm fascinated by the divide. People either love them or hate them!
