I LOVE barbera. Sure Nebbiolo can reach great heights. But on the whole barbera has brought me much more joy over the years
It's such a pleasurable drink!
Never tire of barbera, even with the variable quality
It's usually delicious!
Finally someone talking Barbera!!
Yeehhaawww
Inexpensive but well made Barbera is probably my favorite pizza wine! G Mascarello has an amazing Barbera. And despite the lack of tannins, Barbera can actually age: in 2020 I had a 1967 Barbera made by Bersano- it was getting on in years, but it was very enjoyable, believe it or not. Keep up the great work!
It can age for sure! The acidity…
There were times (some decades ago) that Nebbiolo wouldn't really sell, so it was given as a gift with any purchase of Barbera (as told in a tasting at Bartolo Mascarello's)
Those times have long changed 😊
Lonnnnnng gone... Less than 20 years ago you could walk in buy older vintages of Barolo in cellars...
I love this Barbera episode, because the wines from this grape are quite cheap and tasty. Maybe not as complex as most Nebbiolo, but very satisfying. The Lavignone Barbera d'Asti I had in a restaurant with a pasta put me on the Barbera track. The Lavignone costs 15-16 euro, the G.D. Vajra Barbera 'd Alba 18-20 euro. Also the Langhe Rosso and the Langhe Nebbiolo are highly recommended. Winehappiness under 20 euro, but the real steal is the Fontanafredda Briccotonde Barbera at 7.50 euro. It's made on the fruit, no oak here, but still a lovely entry wine. I would love to see you paying attention to some other Italian (rare) grapes like Refosco, Schioppettino and Primitivo di Manduria. When you have time, dear Matthew. )
There are videos about Schiopettino and Primitivo on the channel! just search them out
@@drmatthewhorkey Oh scusi scusi, I will have a look. )) Edit: I watched them... older vids so not that strange I missed them. And no single gray hair at that time. )
Spot on! Love Barbera as a weekday or simple occasion red. It's easy to match, doesn't need endless aging (unlike my beloved Barolos), it's quite light and easy to pair. I often think of it a bit like Argentinian malbec: very rewarding, great with food, uncomplicated, light but refined, almost never disappointing. And a good deal compared with other cousins from Piedmont.
Agreed on a lot of those points. The price is right!
I just opened a Pio Cesare Dolcetto D'Alba- it was delecious-25 bucks. Great video, keep these coming
A classic producer, glad you enjoyed
I love my Riedel Cabernet/Merlot performance glasses. I think they were priced wrong at my local liquor store and I snagged 4 glasses for around $50 CAD.
They are some serious glasses indeed!
Helpful video. Ya know, I would be interested in a video on some popular but bad wines. And explain why bad and maybe recommend a good alternative.
There are some of those on the channel. Check out the wine shopping playlist
Barbera here in CA is taking off! I often get violets or flowers. So pretty
I've tasted some fantastic ones
I love my Riedel Vinum New World Pinot Noir Glass. I use it for every kind of red wine and it works great. Looks similar to your Performance glass, little difference I think. Barbera d’Alba, great everyday wine ...Cheers!
It is a good glass indeed... Works well for Sangiovese too!
I haven't drunk Barbera much recently, but it is an undervalued wine, especially with the steady price increases of Barolo and Barbaresco. It does offer great bang for your buck if you are in Italy or Europe and maybe some places in the States.
This was an interesting tasting, showing that Superiore or smaller appellations don't always result in a higher quality wine. I do think that these are definitely food wines, as you would have to be a pretty big wine acid fan to drink them without food. 😂Nice video and informative as always.
Thank you! Food-friendliness is the key for sure
A great dependable dinner party wine!
you got that right!
I love the Vigna Caranti from Cascina Garitina, the Bricco Crea from La Tenaglia, the Cantico della Crosia from Vi.Ca.Ra., the Divina Follia from Monpissan, the Passum from Cascina Caslet ( wich is a kind of Amarone made with barbera grapes, super wine) and from Alto Piemonte the Canavese Barbera from La Serra (super high value for money) and finally the Colline Novaresi Barbera from Bianchi in case you want surprise yourself with a different Barbera, also from the area Brigatti and Francesca Castaldi are other 2 interesting addresses. Cheers everybody!!!!!!
you are a hardcore wine geek!
Well i quite like wine to be honest, and i have a little advantage in this case, i'm from Piedmont 😁😁😁
Lucky you!
I really enjoy Barbera and should drink it more often. I think the 20-30$ price range has some great value. One of my favorites is the Vietti Tre Vigne Barbera Di Asti.
Great review Matthew!
That is a fantastic wine from Vietti
Germany and Italy provide the most uniqueness in wine.
Other countries can’t reproduce their grapes close to the same way.
Both are great wine countries but I think other countries make exciting wines too
@@drmatthewhorkey I guess I’m saying you can find many great examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay outside of France.
Can we find great Nebbiolo or Riesling outside of Italy or Germany?
The Vajra Langhe Rosso sells for 15 $ here in the U.S. and it is very nice, not a long finish, but still very nice for a widely available wine.
I LOVE that wine and it will show up soon!
Totally agree with you. For the people I've been able to talk into trying Barbera, they've all enjoyed. And I also think it's a wonderful food friendly wine. While I have a hard time finding Nizza wines in my area, I've also heard great things about them. You mentioned one of Veitti's more expensive Barberas. But they also have a Tre Vigne Barbera that's a lot more affordable and I think very good quality as well.
Agreed on the last point, but the Scarrone Vigna Vecchie really outclasses the Tre Vigne when tasted next to each other
Yes I just meant from a price point@@drmatthewhorkey
Personally I feel that Barbera is a grape variety that I should like more than I do, but for some reason it doesn't quite do it for me. I'll drink it though, and I agree about the food-friendliness.
Pronunciation tip: I am pretty sure that Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba are pronounced as if the apostrophe wasn't there. 😎
Thanks! I do pronounce the 'd' a tad harder than it is natively...
I don't know if I'm weird but with Barbera I get a lot of dried plums on the nose. Also this grape variety is one of my favorites for "everyday wine", good value and super fruit friendly
Dried plums can be a good descriptor too!
Haha. I'm in the Discord server for the wine-making sim Hundred Days, and Barbera has become a running joke among us. Every time someone posts a photo of what they're drinking we always ask what kind of Barbera it is. When people ask for recommendations, we always suggest Barbera. I'll have to post this video in the chat, and see how they respond. ;}
Ahhhh thanks!!
The best Barbera I've ever tasted are Vietti - Vinga Scarrone Barbera and Villa Sparina - Barbera Riserva. Les acidic and more structured than regular Barbera.
Yes both are absolute stunners!
I tasted a selection of 2020 and 2021 barberas and, for me, they had rather unpleasant vegetal notes of beetroots.
By the way, "J" in Italian is, more often than not, pronounced like "Y" in "yes". The same way as if "i" was in its place. It goes both for "Vajra" and "Jesi".
🙏🙏🙏
I have to say, havent had many but all Barberas I have had, have been more than excellent. probably because most of them have been from super Barolo/Barbaresco wineries😅
that is key, tasting entry level wines from top notch producers!
a little help here please. chestnuts; fresh, roasted, steamed?? I wanna try and get it next time.
I think fresh and steamed are closer to what I was picking up
@@drmatthewhorkey thank you!
I think Barbera is the only grape I don't like - for me, it's too rustic and too much acidity. I prefer even Dolcetto or Brachetto.
It can be tough for some people! I like examples with a touch of rusticity.
Great video, everbody i get too try barbera becomw fans quickley, big fans of michele chiaro i cipressi nizza and Fontanafredda make a raimonda barbera d’alba below 20$ that always wows me for that price point
Agreed, what fantastic value-for-money!
